Athena April 21, 2017 Share April 21, 2017 Quote On Graham's sofa this time are Oscar-winning Hollywood star Goldie Hawn and stand-up and actress Amy Schumer, together in new action comedy Snatched, Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando Bloom to chat about his new film Unlocked, and Star Wars star John Boyega, appearing in Woyzeck at the Old Vic. Lucie Jones performs the UK's Eurovision entry Never Give Up on You. Link to comment
StatisticalOutlier May 7, 2017 Share May 7, 2017 This reminded me of a scene in The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox, when Goldie Hawn is pretending to be a duchess but she sits with her legs wide apart, and George Segal whistles and says, "Hey, Duchess!" and motions with his hands to put her legs together. She had pants on on the couch, but especially sitting next to Amy Schumer with her legs plastered together because her dress was so short, it looked odd. 2 Link to comment
Quof May 7, 2017 Share May 7, 2017 There are a number of regular GN guests whom I can't tolerate, and fast-forward through. Cameron Diaz, Rebel Wilson and Amy Schumer. (I just noticed there are no men on that list. Hmmm. I guess I haven't taken note of any male guest with the LOOK AT ME vibe that these three give off. I can even tolerate Will Smith. Oh, wait. Tom Cruise brings the list to 4.) 1 Link to comment
dubbel zout May 7, 2017 Share May 7, 2017 John Boyega was so charming. I think his decorating taste is a little questionable (hee), but I love how totally unembarrassed he is by all that stuff. Have Boyega and Bloom worked together? They were so matey during the show. Graham's admonishment was very funny: "I know this is a chat show, but there is a structure. It's this way [points at himself]." 3 Link to comment

And if you could put one of those wee motion-sensor voice players (like you find in some greeting cards) in it, and have it say, Your tissue, sir, in a British-butler accent? All the wins would be yours. I love how into Eurovision GN still is. That song was pleasant enough, but it's just too bland to win. Side question: After Brexit, can the UK still compete in Eurovision?!? That would be a terrible punishment if not! Link to comment

Per our friend Wiki, "eligibility for potential participation in the Eurovision Song Contest requires a national broadcaster with active EBU membership that will be able to broadcast the contest via the Eurovision network." 1 Link to comment
MissLucas May 7, 2017 Share May 7, 2017 (edited) The Eurovision Song Contest has nothing to do with the EC. Plenty of not-member nations participate. I only know Amy Schumer from her appearances on Graham Norton, so I have no beef with her. She always strikes me as not feeling very comfortable with the format and so her jokes seem forced. No idea why she can't relax a bit and drop at least some of the self-deprecating jokes - it comes off like an act. (I'm sure plenty of folks on that couch deliver an act as well but they are more skillful at coming across as authentic.) Edited May 7, 2017 by MissLucas 1 Link to comment

About coming off like an act...I heard her say the same thing about the Harry Potter place letting you fuck Daniel Radcliffe if you pay $100 somewhere else just the other day, that time in the context of being there with her sister, I think. She seemed uncomfortable to me, too, but I thought it's because she was having to work pretty hard to keep everything contained in that dress--legs tight together, back perfectly straight. But now I think she's just not as ease there for some reason. Link to comment
kat165 May 8, 2017 Share May 8, 2017 I couldn't take my eyes off Orlando Bloom's body posture. He seemed to be sitting as far away from Shumer as he could possibly get, like she smelled or something. Link to comment

I was distracted by how wide her legs were apart at certain points. She was manspreading worse than either of the guys. I'd forgotten how cute Orlando Bloom is. Even though he seemed pretty dull in comparison to everyone else. Edited May 8, 2017 by TexasGal Link to comment

She seems self conscious, which doesn't make a dress like that work. 2 Link to comment

Yeah, I was hoping Goldie Hawn's presence - she seems like a motherly, down-to-earth person who could tell Amy to knock off the shtick - might temper this, but it didn't. It's a shame, Amy actually does seem bright and has some interesting things to say - like how men who say they want a funny girlfriend *really* don't - but then it becomes very act-y. Goldie probably has a zillion great stories but she didn't get a chance to tell them. It was funny when both of them complained about the movie promo photo. I find Orlando Bloom so blah. sugarbaker design May 8, 2017 Share May 8, 2017 I liked this episode! Thought it was even-handed, everybody got a chance to shine. Everybody, including Amy, was engaged and brought something to the couch. Orlando Bloom is pretty boring, but it wouldn't be fair if he were that good-looking and charismatic too. Not that many episodes of Graham Norton include simulated breast-feeding. 1 Link to comment

I can't really blame her, but there are things that are less constricting that she could wear. 2 Link to comment

The horror! The horror! I liked how John and Orlando were so chummy, even to the point of being reprimanded by the "teacher." 1 Link to comment

It would be awful, but part of me is curious how Amy's "on" shtick would interact with Rebel Wilson's phony above-it-all shtick. But no doubt I think we'd be subject to some sort of simulated sex mimicry. 1 Link to comment
peeayebee May 9, 2017 Share May 9, 2017 I wanted both Goldie and Amy to shut up and stop interrupting. Geez! Amy has to insert a joke into everything. She brings everything back to her. And Goldie, well, first I have a hard time looking at her. Second, she just seemed off to me. A bit dotty. But it was mainly Amy that bugged. I really hate it when a guest on the show doesn't really seem to be listening to the others, or doesn't seem all that interested. Maybe it's just being self-conscious. I also hate when a guest is looking at a monitor (I believe) instead of the person on the couch who's talking. It's such a pet peeve of mine, my biggest pet peeve -- people who don't know how to listen to others. GRRRRRRRRrrrrrr. I wanted the couch to just be Orlando and John. They were both funny, nice, relaxed, and interesting. Oh, and cute. John's purchases were... disappointing. Oh well. Oh, another thing about Amy that bugged me -- When Graham was asking about what they spent too much money on (or something like that), she said that she made the movie about PTSD and gave her salary to an organization that treats it (or something like that). Yes, that's a wonderful thing to do, but this was not the time to brag about it. I thought Graham was looking for embarrassing or extravagant things that they each bought when they got money. 1 Link to comment

I think that's a fair criticism if it were truly an off the cuff conversation. I read something maybe a year ago? Whenever TRAINWRECK came out that she actually hasn't done the whole huge Hollywood star go buy extravagant things route, much. It was about her apartment at the time and how not glitzy it was. I get the segue was due to John's having made silly purchases, and then sort of spreading the topic among the couch, but A: I'm pretty sure there was a pre-interview so she'd have told a production assistant what she planned to say in response it implies they didn't prod her to go the weird/embarassing route, or B: she really hasn't done anything that fits the category. If the biggest expenditures since she started making a ton of money were paying off family's mortgages and doing that movie and donating her salary, then if they knew that in advance (which they almost certainly did) and didn't nudge her to respond differently, and still chose to ask the question, then the show would appear to be OK with her taking the discussion in that different direction. 2 Link to comment
