Hopefully Danny is going to dump Amber/Melissa. Given the real-life ages of the actors (Scott 40 1/2, Melissa 23 3/4), I just have a very difficult time accepting any romantic connection between them. Maybe I'm the only one? Since her character has never really been developed, it just doesn't seem like a good fit to me. And, could this be the pathway (assuming Claire and Danny get back together) to Danny quitting the force and moving back to Joizee to start that restaurant? Time will tell...

Not for nothing but Claire van der Boom, who plays Rachel (Danny's ex & mother of both his kids), is also a bit younger than Scott Caan in real life. I think she was in her late 20's (I wanna say 27) when the show started. Which would put her almost in her mid 30's now. Scott is 40 in real life; he's mentioned, in character, this season/maybe last season that Danny's 39. Somehow they manage to make Claire look more "age-appropriate" for Scott's Danny. I remember not believing she was in her 20's in real life after I saw Rachel's introductory ep in S1; I figured she was in her 30's like Scott at the time.

I'm just amazed Rachel's finally calling it quits with Stan. It took long enough. Both have been mentioning marital troubles since the characters were introduced.

Note to Hawaii Five-0 showrunners: If you have to spend 5 minutes & use clips from six past seasons to remind everyone who (returning) characters are (Rachel & the PI), perhaps you should NOT be using those characters for an episode!! Did the PI add anything special to the episode? It could have been any random PI as far as I could tell.

Everyone appeared to be having a good time this go-around. Even Danny, who was going through some personal stuff, wasn't super cantankerous. He was honest about his emotions but totally mature. Adding the third element of Brown in the office bickering session actually elevated it too.

Also the crime of the week was a little more dialed down, by H50 standards anyway.

  • Yes, Claire is either 33 or 34, can't find her exact birthdate, just 1983.

Peter Lenkov Tweeted her a Happy Birthday last year on Twitter, on her birthday, but I got stupid & forgot to write the date down when he did it. Sometime I may try to go back through his timeline & see if I can find it & get the date.

It was weird seeing Rachel smiling while telling the kids about the divorce.

I'd love for Danny to have an age-appropriate relationship. He and Rachel have much more chemistry than he ever did with either of his two other major girlfriends on the series.

I loved that the wife's plan was temporarily botched by her not realizing that her husband was as much of a scumbag as she was and wouldn't pay the ransom. I was a bit confused, though, as to why it mattered that Harry figured out that the wife was involved. They were going to catch her accomplice either way, and when they checked his phone they were going to see the connection to the wife, so what did it matter that Harry figured it out early? It didn't change anything, right?

The timing of the episode felt off and they literally had to off screen the  entire breaking of the case in order to do the black ops arrest of the wife and "shock us" with the 5-0 twist. Then had harry explain what just happened to end the show.

I agree.  I enjoyed this episode.  The snark was perfect, just the right amount of Danny sarcasm and Steve teasing, and I like the old-school detective.  I think everything worked in this episode:  the characters being their usual selves, the story being a bit surprising, and the relationship with Danny and Rachel.  I have enjoyed this season quite a bit over last season, and since I expect next season to be the last, I hope that the writers give us more team episodes and conversations like those we had in this episode.  Danny and Steve were actually talking to each other and not arguing all the time.  I get the feeling that some of the writers love the arguing and forget that it's the relationship that got the audience hooked on these characters in the first place.   Next week looks intense - which I like.

Really the husband is a scumbag and not at all far from innocent. But the wife was more awful than he was. And tried to get money by putting of a ransom. While an innocent young woman nearly paid with her life. As really love Harry aka William F back. As he is fun to have.

I didn't see the wife being in on it, so that was a neat twist after I was cracking up that the husband didn't pay the ransom.

Except for just punching the husband and the second kidnapping of the wife, this was fairly low on civil rights violations.

I also like the unnecessarily complicated zip line for the suitcase of money. They probably could have just done a dead drop in a park. Being up in the hotel let Kono shoot them up from the chopper.

Apologies upfront for this long post, but I won't have much time this week to check and update on this forum. But will reply if necessary.

The latest episode was really an entire veiled plot line about why women cannot be trusted. The VotW (Victim of the Week) as far the writing goes turned out to be a real shocker. It kind of was swimming in the back of my mind and kinda like PI Harry Brown said 'It was gnawing at me but I didn't know why'.

Rachel was back with more drama. (Man what a thankless role Ms Van der Boom has) I will take her at her word that she did all she could to keep the situation she finds herself in from happening, but it kept running through my mind "Now I see why Grace is all angsty sometimes...besides the fact that she is 15."

But the McDanno was just perfection tonight. And before I comment, I want to point out that The Show is now doing shout-outs to McDanno even in hindsight. There is now a noticeable nanosecond pause injected into Danny's original introduction of Steve to Rachel when they flashback to Ep 1.10. It is now "This is my partner...pausetoletimplicationsinkin...Steve McGarrett", the same way Steve now says it. But anyway, Steve Steve Steve "Mr. In For A Penny, In For A Pound" McGarrett. Boy, when that man finally commits, he commits. Steve is like a dog with a bone when it comes to Danny: he is always completely aware of everything about Danny whether it seems like he is paying attention or not. In Danny's first scene with Steve and the other principal characters of tonight's show, the very first thing Steve says to him is "Oh you got a haircut?" It usually takes most men 2 weeks for them to notice that their wives have changed their hair color. Steve notices Danny's merest trim.

Next, we have the cargument of the week. Steve is tuned in closely to "Danny TV", if you will, and notices his change in demeanor immediately. Ever since Ep 7.08 we have repeated evidence that Steve is no longer shy about asking for his PDA in public from Danny, and this apparently includes their sharing intimacies and secrets in front of virtual strangers. So with visiting P.I. Harry Brown (Ep 5.10) in the backseat of the Camaro, he demands that Danny tell him what is the meaning behind his sudden "pouting" face. (Something tells me there may be more than a few deleted scenes from this episode) When Danny tells him that it has to do with Rachel and Stan, the old school P.I. wants to put in his "2 cents worth" and opines that Danny wants back in with Rachel. Mr. Brown gets a small shock when both Steve AND Danny not only allude to the fact that this is absolutely NOT the case but that the "two lovebirds" may be in a "more than friends" relationship. ("Did you just say 'US'?" ) What makes this conversation so priceless is the fact that neither Steve nor Danny show any trace of guilt or embarrassment regarding this revelation. They just roll with it in a kind "I thought you knew" matter-of-fact way. God bless you for this, Show.

The McDanno train keeps a-rollin' and we next have what I call the "Mommy & Daddy are talking" conversation. Steve, Harry Brown, & ChinHo are discussing evidence at the computer table back at the Palace when Danny, who has retired to his office, decides he wants to speak to Steve privately. Hyperaware!Steve, even in the midst of a complicated technical discussion, spots his husband Danny signalling him. He immediately stops what he is doing and goes to him. Danny asks that he come in and shut the door. He wants to discuss with Steve in detail what the current situation with Stan and Rachel is. However, they are once again interrupted by the "c-blocking" P.I., who has basically come to deliver an "I-told-you-so" because Danny has just revealed to Steve the gist of Stan's opinion that Rachel may still be in love with him. Danny becomes more than a little annoyed by all the butting into their private time with each other (it seems apparent here that Danny does actually appreciate them despite his gruff way of expressing himself). What is interesting and revealing is that when Harry takes another jab and asks when Danny is returnng to Rachel, Steve and Danny both again vehemently deny that is going to happen with Danny contributing that he has a girlfriend that he "likes" very much. Harry picks up on this and with a pointed look at Steve counters with "I didn't hear the word 'love' did you Steve?" as if to redeem himself of any taint of judgement he may have expressed earlier of S&D's close relationship. And Steve is no help by playing into every bit of the "chatty wife" role when he spills the entire short story version of Danny's situation in front of the detective. Danny seems ever so relieved when Chin comes in at this moment so that he can stop talking about it. Maybe this is Steve's way of getting back at Danny for his public revelation of their private argument in 7.18?? In any event, God knows how Danny will punish Steve for this later.

For us McDanno Shippers, this episode looks like they are trying to chart a course for TPTB to steer the ship back to Hetero Safe Harbor by having Danny go back to Rachel and a normal (read "straight") life without Steve. I know I'm prejudiced but I say this is not a good plan. Many reasons for this, but Number 1 on the list is that if Steve / AOL thought it was a bad idea to go back to Catherine after all of their drama, it is just as bad an idea for Danny personally to go back to Rachel when he so clearly loves Steve. Albeit the situation is complicated by the fact that Danny has an almost grown daughter who will need a father in her life now more than ever. No wonder he looks so harassed. Wow, if this is going to be the ongoing dilemma of possible final Season 8, this will be an intriguing Gordian knot to untie.

Other than the stupid fact that this ransom retrieval exposed the two kidnappers standing on that balcony in plain view, even if they did not get shot by Kono, they were still 15 floors up in a building that could easily be surrounded.  What goes up must come down, and that includes kidnappers with a briefcase full of money...Very poor plan.

But come on...How on earth would two bozos manage to string that cable and get it permanently attached to the outside of one building to a hotel room across the street???????

I've always interpreted it as one of those May-December type of relationships.  But, I do hope Danno and Rachel get back together eventually, especially if Scott Caan is leaving Hawaii Five-0 after this season.

As always, nice seeing William Forsythe.

But that's the ridiculousness of the show.

Claire Van der Boom looked a little different in that episode.  I couldn't really put my finger on it, is her face a wee bit rounder, or maybe botox?  Either way, she's still gorgeous and has beakers and beakers more chemistry with Scott Caan that anyone else.  Well, except for AOL that is...  I've always liked the Rachel character, whether she was bitter and biting or soft and caring, she was always complex.  I didn't realize how much I'd missed her until there she was.

I do still love this show, I love the McDanno, I love the interactions with the Chin Ho and Kono.  I love the ridiculousness.  I love the scenery porn.

Nobody, including Scott, has said Scott Caan's leaving H50 after this season (S7).

In fact, Daniel Dae Kim recently posted to his Instagram account--which I posted about in the Media thread over this past weekend--that both Scott & Alex will be back for S8 (next season).

Awhile back, Alex O'Loughlin did an interview with an Australian newspaper where he said that he would leave the show after S8, because he had sustained a number of lingering injuries from doing his own stunts for the show & he still wanted to be able to do things, physically, with his young kids (his stepson from his wife Malia's previous marriage & his & Malia's son together) &, when the time came, his grandchildren.

I think at least 1 thing that was different was that Claire's hairstyle has changed--& gotten progressively shorter--pretty much every time she's been on lately. In S1, & maybe S2, her hair was longish with bangs in front; since then it's been shorter whenever she's been on. I think that was a Claire choice as opposed to a character thing for Rachel. I doubt she's been Botoxing...yet. She's not even 35. I'm not sure her face has gotten rounder either; maybe it's the shorter hair giving that illusion.

That's it!  It was probably the lack of bangs.  That can really change someone's face.

I really like the place that Rachel and Danny's relationship is in right now.  It is complex, but even with everything that's gone on, Danny still cares for Rachel as a person, and not just as the necessary evil he has to coordinate with for the sake of their children.  When he went to her car outside Charlie's school, he immediately recognized that she was in some emotional distress and rather than walking away, he chose to engage her and find out what was going on.

Now the weird part about that scene is the adorable young boy they have playing Charlie just waved "hi" to his parents and walked on.  Weren't they there to pick him up after school?  It was Danny's day but you would think that if he saw both his parents sitting in a car in front of his school where he was expected to be picked up by one or the other of them, he would have gone to the car they were in, rather than walking on.  By himself.  If Charlie went to Danny's car, because that's who was on the schedule to pick him up, Danny--in his hyper-worried dad persona--would have beckoned him over, or broken off the conversation with Rachel.  But no, both parents were like "hey, Charlie..." then went back to talking about Rachel and Stan's impending divorce.  Yes, that's an important discussion, but Danny's #1 character trait that has been hammered on from the beginning is his paranoia about his kids and their safety.  I just thought it was weird.

Though she didn't deserve to be kidnapped and threatened with death, she was far from an innocent - she was having an affair with her friend's scumbag husband after all. Which makes her a bit of a scumbag too, imo.

I clocked it being the wife's plan when the mistress was brought in by the kidnappers and they talked. It wasn't the writing - there was something about the actress. Maybe I just have a knee jerk reaction to certain kinds of women.

The timeline confused me a little - maybe I missed a time of day chiron or something. The kidnapper was getting the stuff for the mistress, but she wasn't kidnapped until later in the episode (at least the editing made it seem like the kidnapping happened as 5-0 was going to her house, and the proof of life shot came in at that time too.)

I enjoyed the show, even though there were a number of improbable things. For example, a police helicopter hovers right in their line of sight, and they go ahead with their plan which involved a metal suitcase ziplining to their exact location. The laundry chute was a nice touch. A fifteen floor slide (sixteen if you count the basement) is pretty long, though.
