S05.E12: Tracey's Story

Would it be feasible for someone like Tracey, where her lymphedema is so out of control, to just make the decision to amputate the legs? She could get back to a more normal life, could be in a lot less pain, could be more mobile, lessen the strain on her heart.

Physiologically speaking, how does it happen that you gain so much weight in your legs and not other parts of your body?

I know! I mean, I get it, we all gain weight/store weight/hold weight/carry weight differently but this seems very odd. I wonder if a doc has ever checked to see if there is something else going on to cause it. Plus her eyes, they look so sunken and hollowed-out.

Typically with lymphedema they use various kinds of compression to move the lymphatic fluid. Did they do that at the nursing home? She seemed to imply that they didn't.

I was just thinking of Charity...those butterfly wings on her butt...

So violence towards the kids wasn't reason for divorce, but cheating on her was...

Thank you!!! She had zero shame in saying that she divorced her husband only after he cheated but not for abusing her kids. Her mother is also in the picture, acting concerned for her daughter. I'm sorry, but anyone who gives me black eyes won't be in my life. At least not by choice.

I'm not going to lie, the only thing I'm thinking about right now is the fact that she's eating in the bed, with her plate balanced precariously close to her ladygarden, which I'm 99.9% certain is not being covered by any sort of undergarment.  Someone get her some sort of tray or something.  Please, for the love of all that's good and holy, get her something to get that plate away from her crotch!

Oh boy...an enabler that "needs to be needed"...this doesn't sound good...

I don't know. Could end up being a good match. She may still need him even if she is able to lose a significant amount of weight. But when he said that first sentence about loving being a care giver... yup. He's gonna be in the market for someone like her. Hopefully he turns out to be a good guy and just a "needs to be needed" guy. I'm pretty sure he's the one behind the eating at the table and the house being clean, etc. This is where he feels valued and worthy - in being a good caregiver. Not just of her but of the household. He may end up being too much of an enabler but he does seem to genuinely care about her and enjoying caring for her.

The boyfriend said something like, "I fell in love with what was on the inside of Tracey, not the outside. The outside didn't matter."

Translation: He's a fat fetishist. Sadly, Tracey fell for his line and thought he actually meant it. Bet you all an extra pair of lace undies (for the gasoline) that if she does lose the weight, he's out of there.

I think Anthony seems like a lovely man. He's also seems to be the most self aware spouse ever seen on this program.

Please do not disappoint me, Anthony!

Also, Tracey doesn't seem that overall big to me.

And the house looks clean!

I'm more shocked by the cleanliness of the house than I am by her legs. If I leave for only one day, the house looks like we were robbed and vandalized. I can't imagine my husband mopping. He won't even not spray the toilet like a moving target, or wash a dish.

Oh joy, at least she's wearing pants and not flashing everybody like good ol' Butt Wings. Sorry, can't remember her name.

I could be wrong but wasn't there a show a while ago about a woman from the UK who had legs like Tracey who opted to have them amputated and essentially "start over" with prosthetic legs?

Considering everything else that might be the only option.

I am starting to believe the participants who say that the voiceovers are scripted. They're all identical. "I had no idea how hard this would be". I want one of them to say, "Well, that wasn't that bad!"

Yes - I remember that show. She was TINY everywhere else and even said something to the effect that her legs basically took all the nutrients from what she ate so the rest of her looked even thinner (or something like that). She did come to the US to talk to a specialist about amputation. I don't remember how it ended. It seems like she didn't go through with it but kept it as a possibility down the road.

At least she smiles and doesn't constantly complain out loud. Give her credit for that.

And when she's getting out of the back of the car at the end of a long day on the road, she's NICE and PLEASANT. Imagine THAT!

It's official. For not (at least) I'm rooting for her and for her marriage. I'm hoping he turns out to be solidly with her and not JUST with her because of the weight. We shall see.

gawd that would be horrible, but yeah, it might be the only way. Even if she lost all that fat and fluid from the legs, she'd need major surgery to fix the huge amounts of loose skin.

Don't know if any doctor would attempt such an amputation on such a patient - not even Dr. Now.

As much as I despise the obligatory shower scenes, Tracey's shower really illustrated how disproportionate her bottom half is to her top half.  This is a body type I've never seen on this show.  She's really not that big on top. Seeing her from the waist up, you think, yeah, she's overweight, but not 600lbs. I have to wonder if gastric bypass/sleeve gastrectomy will even help her since so much of this seems related to the lymphedema.

I can't imagine how hard it is for Anthony to maneuver her legs.  They have to weigh 150lbs each, and she doesn't seem able to help swing them at all.  That's a lot of dead weight to move.

Molestation, stillbirth, alcoholic and abusive parents and boyfriend. Wow.

Plus sometimes they would pull out a shotgun. Somehow I've made it through. 62 years with no one ever having pulled a shotgun in my home. Anyone else?

A real contrast from last week.
