Billy had no problem shooting guns in Madi's direction which was not only incredibly reckless (what if she'd been hurt?) but also demonstrated his total lack of regard for his Maroon allies over HIS bigger goal.

The Walrus crew was there as well. The men Billy called brothers just a few months ago.

While true, Flint's worse than most. Flint only ever cared about himself, Thomas, Miranda, and his own quest for revenge. Every one that isn't Thomas or Miranda and becomes a speed bump to obtaining that revenge is expendable, including friends and allies.

That separates him from Billy and Silver, who while pirates that also have innocent blood on their hands, at least care to some degree about the crew and aren't as eager to sacrifice them to achieve selfish goals.

Ultimately I don't think that's as true as they themselves believe.  They can also both be that way to some extent because they aren't the ones in charge yet.  I don't think Flint's worse than most, at least not on this show.  But they've all shown lack of regard when it comes to getting what they want.

Re: that clip of Gates, there is actually this excellent gifset on Tumblr that points the eerie similarities between what Gates said before Flint killed him as compared to what was said by Thomas' father and that Navy guy to Flint when Thomas was put away and he and Miranda were exiled.   There was no way Flint was NOT going to have an extreme reaction to given that similarity.
