From the previews it appears Noah makes a miraculous recovery & jets off to France with his new romantic sidepiece, Prof, Eau So Franch... where he rushes to rescue Whitney from an abusive Furkat.  Like ...seriously???  Is that how they are going to spin this???

Madame Professor Eau So Franch is oh so French she wears stocking and garters.  She is oh so French she is in the 50s.  Yet somehow she forgets how to cheek kiss.  Maybe being around Noah turns her into a sexual stereotype and an clueless American?

So, she had a brief affair with a lecturer and abysmal writer at the university at which she was a visiting scholar.  He was recently released from prison and showed extreme emotional disturbances.  She has a difficult life at home with her husband who is suffering from dementia.  Sounds like a great plan to bring  the king of the self-stabbing car crashers home.  Why not introduce him around?  Spend quality time with him?  Just make sure you keep track of all of the knives.

The differing POVs this entire season have been wildly divergent, so much more so than last seasons. Tonight's made Juliette into two entirely different people. It used to be fun to see the differences but now it's just frustrating.

I'm so glad the writers had us waste half of the season finale following the story of a side character no one cares about. Cause knowing whether or not Professor French Lady's husband woke up or not is the compelling hook we were all just waiting to find out. In French no less.
Such compelling TV there.

I quickly fast forwarded through the rest of that bullshit.

I really hope this show is cancelled, if it does return I will not be watching.

Quick recap of tonight's episode:

Zzzzzzzzzzzz...Zzzzzzzzzzz.....Zzzzzzzzzzz...[bed fart]...Zzzzzzz...FURKAT!...Zzzzzzz...Zzzzzzzz...

I am over-the-fuck-out of this train wreck show. Have fun next season, writers -- please make sure to milk all you can from Scotty's death (it ain't done yet! Don't forget Allison still has to tell Cole!) that no one cares about either.

I like Irene Jacob, I like her character, and I like her story -- in a different show. Unfortunately, I didn't tune into this show to find out her point of view. Frankly, I'd rather this episode have been all Noah. Everyone else seems to be more or less resolved and getting their lives back together, and we might have been able to spend the first half hour finding out how Noah actually came back from the brink. Because when we left him, he looked like he was ready for six months at the place where Alison stayed; I can't believe three months with Juliette turned him around that much. And it would have been nice to see some sort of process anyway, even if it's an appointment with a therapist. It actually feels like there's an episode missing.

Frankly, I think this is a good place to end the series. The affair has run its course. All mysteries have been solved. And finally, it looks like everybody has moved on from the pain they've all caused each other and are where they should be in their lives. If the creators are smart -- never a given -- they'll end it here.

Until Furkat became a woman-slapping asshole, I was happy to see him.  While I always want Vik to run far, far away from the Solloway suckage, I was happy to see him too.  However, when we were left with Noah's point of view, and his twisted views of women, I realized why we were shown so much Professor Eau So Franch and Furkat and Vik and, earlier in the season, Brandon Fraser hallucination-prison-guard-of-all-evil.   The writers realize we hate all of these people so damn much they needed to give us someone else to look at.

On an unrelated note, how did Noah go from being a bleeding, pussy* mess on his kitchen floor, throwing the crazy eyes and popping pills like candy to being able to afford a Christmas vacation in Paris?

I hate this show so much now.

*As in oozing puss.

The French professor's story was so depressing.  But, finally, we realize her purpose.  She existed so that Noah could rationalize and come to terms with his mother's death through her husband's death? Was this necessary?

Are we to assume that, after seeing his ex-wife and kids safely in their nest, a newly sober and introspective Noah debates on going to Alison when the cab driver asks him where to? Why is he still drawn to this morose, only moderately attractive woman?

Seeing FurKat's name over labia made me realize it's a joke and he's really a hairy pussy. Lovely euphemism, pig.

I don't really like Juliette but it held my attention. Paris is always interesting. I hope she's not back next season.

This is the first episode - ever - that I haven't hated Whitney. The actress did a great job of seeming world-weary and disillusioned.  Of course she fell back into shrill, hunched back, and claw hands with HP.  But her last scenes with Noah were lovely.  Normal voice, standing upright, normal hands.   Costume and makeup clearly love her, and she looked good with natural makeup. Loved the red dress.

From what Noah told Juliette, it sounds like he didn't kill his mother.  From Helen's reaction, I don't believe his version of sex was correct.   But I'm sure most will disagree with me.

Now Professor Eau So Franch gets her own 30 minutes.

For the second time this season!

The thing that redeemed that for me a tiny bit was that even the other French people in this episode were having none of her Eau So Frenchiness. The firing scene in particular was glorious.

I also want to know (but not really, because I'm kinda over this show) how Noah went from last episode's hallucinating, self-harming mess to the umpteenth generic "an American in Paris" TV cliche. Did the meeting with Gunther magically cure him?

Noah's cured!  Noah has so much money he can spend several weeks in Paris just walking the streets! Noah runs across his estranged daughter in need of rescuing in Paris! W.T.F.

If I had known I was going to be watching a frickin French language film with subtitles about a character I care nothing about I would've skipped it. I don't know why they bothered including Cole or Allison this season, the French professor easily had more screen time than Cole. Absolutely hated this episode. As far as Noah and the Solloways are concerned it would make a great series finale the way it ended.

I stopped watching this season after the first episode that had the french lady arc for half the episode. I come back for the finale and get even more of her!

Maybe after a year or two of rehab/therapy, Noah would have recovered himself to this extent, but not after three months and with the expert help of Juliet, a person who earlier in the season obviously had no concept of Noah's post-prison ptsd/psychosis given that she balked that he didn't want to tie her up.  Also, if he's still on parole would he really be allowed out of the country?  Does Noah still have his teaching job at that university?

This episode was wasted on Juliette's dull and meaningless French melodrama.  But nonethless, Noah's fifteen minutes of actual story here could have been a fine series finale for his character.  Helen should have been given the other half hour to wrap up her character/the mental breakdown that she's been having all season long, and then the show could have ended.  I honestly can't believe that season 4 is happening; there's nothing left to say about the original story/characters.  I guess it will be all about Juliet and each episode will feature contrasting viewpoints on her dinner parties.

And NO, Whitney, cheating on your spouse/getting a divorce as a result is NOT the same thing as domestic violence.  I think it really cheapens domestic violence to suggest that.  I'm glad Noah reconciled with her, but she's still out of her fucking mind.  I was also waiting for her to reference the fact that her mother/siblings probably would have told her that Helen was the one driving the car that killed her ex-boyfriend.

At this point I don't have a clear understanding of the timing of the storyline, esp Noah's story. He told Whitney he had been seeing French Teacher for about 3 months. Didn't he go straight from prison to teaching at the University? (maybe a half way house in between?) So, he's only been out of prison for 3 months also.  And then the little detail about his mental breakdown in last weeks episode. Did he see a doctor? Get some therapy for PTSD? None of this makes sense.

Whitney is still a brat. She acts just like her mom & grandparents. The way they all speak to each other is awful. I'd hate to spend any time around them. I think she knows the truth. I doubt she would have accepted Noah's help if she didn't know the truth. Plus the painter boyfriend embraced him and seemed happy to see him. The last time they met he beat him up. So yea, I believe they know. I'm happy it's out in the open and that Noah's kids are kinder to him. But I doubt Helen's parents will ever treat him differently.

I haven't a clue how the storyline can continue into another season. Everyone seems to be closer to what they want. I guess we'll see.

I got the "FurCat" thing tonight too.

Yes, Whitney looked very beautiful. Her makeup was perfect. And I'm glad that both the older kids were kinder to Noah. He made a lot of mistakes, but Whitney & Martin treated him like crap. I just hope Noah stays away from Alison next season.

I couldn't help but think of Masters of Sex. Their original plan was four seasons, covering the entirety of the Masters/Johnson relationship. It's first season was a huge hit, Showtime got greedy and told the writers to stretch things out for more seasons. The writers did what they were ordered and the quality of the remaining episodes dropped as whatever their plan was throw completely out the window. The show still ended up limping to four seasons before being unceremoniously canceled, a shell of itself. Sound familiar?

The Affair was suppose only to last three seasons but I'm guessing has been successful enough that they'll keep pushing for more and more seasons until the show collapses in on itself. I mean was the season finale just seriously about Noah's French tryst? That's on top of Noah's Single White Female/Fight Club storyline being the main arc of the season.

I think the writers have just completely lost the plot and they're stalling for time until they're cancelled or Showtime lets them end.

If Noah had the money to go off to France with the french woman, why was he living in that dump to begin with, and what did his probation officer say.

This was a big wtf ending to the season.

And the french woman getting felt up in the hallway when Noah comes to the door--with her husband not cold yet was nasty.  No wonder her daughter hates her.

Yes. Sarah Treem stated during season 1 that she had a three-year story arc for the show. Showtime later requested a fourth season. My guess is that this season has been filler, a narrative placeholder:; what is now season 4 will advance and resolve the storylines. From this potluck season 3, I think only Noah's original sin -- as backstory, not plot -- was inherent to the original narrative. Along with Cole and Alison sharing custody and fraught moments on Montauk, and Helen telling her family that Noah was innocent, at the same time she realized that he didn't take the fall for her, or her alone.

Sink back into the ocean, Gunther; we'll always have Paris, Juliette; FurKat, even now, you probably think this song is about you.

WTF was that?  I kept waiting for madam French or Noah to wake up and realize that the whole episode was a dream or side a effect of bad batch of brownies.. something, anything...  Bueller???

Furkat was officially the only character that had laid hand on 2 different Solloways.  Although as irritating as Whitney, I could never be behind domestic violence.  OR was that technically a workplace violence?

Although on that note, Noah got a point for getting out of the area when dragged by Withney.  S1 Noah would have stormed the gallery and pummeled Furkat

Lol, at the end, of course Noah was not going to end up with madam French.  She just lost her husband and Noah was officially divorced from Alison.  So technically whatever they had would not have been an affair anymore.   ##rimshot##

If I needed further proof that this show is about Noah, this season was it. We can't get the POV of Luisa, Vik, Helen's parents, one of the kids or hell even Max. Not that I need them but at least I wasn't introduced to them yesterday and they have skin in the game. No. I have to be given the POV of Noah's Johnny come lately lover? Really? She only served to masturbate on-screen to Noah's crap book (as if everyone creaming themselves over that pile of garbage last season wasn't enough) miraculously cure Noah of mental illness and drug abuse and show him that his mother's death wasn't his fault.

This season finale would have been better spent starting where we left off episode 9 with Noah on the floor at his hole in the wall apartment having a mental break, but I guess that would have made too much sense.

I know violence is never the answer but I was upset that Noah didn't get to punch Furkat in the face after hitting his daughter.

I too am curious as to how Noah is affording trips to Paris, buying airplane tickets same day as flight (on Xmas Eve no less) and rare books to gift his latest lover.

I don't think the differing POV this episode could top S1 gun confrontation (or was it? depends on whose view) at Cole's mom's house.

I don't see a reason for a S4.

This did feel more like a series finale than a season ender. There really is nowhere else to go. There's no setup for next season, so ...

I may have done the Joe Biden holy ghost turn when this episode/season ended. This was boring AF. I should've gone to bed early.

So, I take it Noah is no longer on probation since he can travel and the Keystone Kops never followed up about the stabbing.

Everything about this season was a colossal waste of time. I don't know what the writers were thinking. Seems as if they tried to be artsy with Professor Le Pew, but it backfired since her story was separate from the core cast. Though I'll always appreciate Paris location porn.

Uh, yeah. Had it been my father, God rest his soul, Furkat would've had hands laid on him and his exhibit all fucked up. But since Noah finally had an in with Whitney, he didn't want to go against her wishes by causing a scene. She'll always be awful, so I was with Furkat until he popped her.

what the heck was Frenchie's revelation?  My husband cheated on my for years and I thought I needed rescue and it turned out he was the one who needed rescue all along?  I'm unclear on that.  If she means he needed rescue because of his dementia, well honey if it took you this long to realize that you are a dick.  No matter what he did to you no one deserves that.  But if there was another reason I didn't see it.

It's already been renewed for Season 4. https://t.co/ZfeUCZS4jh

What a terrible narrative choice though to spend so much time with Juliette just to set up a metaphor for Noah. Joshua Jackson really got short shrift this season.

And I'm really annoyed they basically glossed over Noah's complete MENTAL IMBALANCE THAT CAUSED HIM TO STAB HIMSELF IN THE NECK like it never happened.

Plus, his parole officer is okay with him jaunting off to Paris? WTFE.

Exactly why I thought this episode was going to be 1 of Noah's hallucination..  Maybe as the camera was focused on Noah at the end, the background slowly changed to Noah sitting in a mental institution staring blankly at the windows.  Something.. anything :P

I went from actively hating this episode to thinking - maybe it wouldn't be so bad if it was the 8th or 9th of the season. And if they gave Noah a 2 or 3 year time jump. I find the whole examination of the consequences of keeping secrets within/from a family pretty compelling. But after what we watched Noah go through his state of mind and attitude are completely unbelievable after only 3 months.

This was the one shift in Noah's character that I completely bought. I don't know if I can properly articulate why but it was the one moment in the episode that rang true for me.

This should never have been the finale. No Alison or Cole at all? This had FILLER written all over it.

As others have said, the french professor was a dead end storyline from the beginning and served no purpose except to shore up Noah's fragile ego. I wanted to see his parents fleshed out like Alison's hippy dippy mother, Helen's deeply disturbing parents, and Cole's whole Godfather of Montauk horde.

I'll be there next year, but if his all-French-insult-Americans squeeze is there, I'm out.

Sorry, Juliette, but if a man tells you that he's unwilling to have a monogamous relationship, and you decide to be with him, then you're in an open relationship.

"He slept with other women during our open marriage!" is a pathetic excuse for abandoning your husband the moment he (magically) regains lucidity after years of dementia. I can see why you and Noah got along so well, though - you both have a knack for displaying the worst judgment possible.

If this had been an episode with 3 episodes left for the season, I would have been okay with it. The scenes in France were gorgeous, Julia Goldani Torres was beautiful as a chicly coiffed and dressed Whitney (never quite noticed that about her before -- probably the bratty screeching did me in..Lol) and I didn't mind the back story and finish to Professor French's storyline. But damn...not as the season finale and not for the majority of the hour! I kept holding out hope for this season. I didn't even realize that it was the season finale until I watched last week's Homeland yesterday. Surprised, in a good way, to see Vik's still on the scene.

I'm thinking that this was how the showrunners had planned on ending the series, but then Showtime ordered Season 4 after Season 3 had been shot.

Not my favorite season by a long shot, but I'll watch Season 4.

Agreed. As an episode in and of itself I was interested in what was happening - at the very least I didn't flip away. But as a season finale? Makes no sense. Especially since there didn't seem to be a single thing in the episode that was setting up story for next year. Last week's episode could have made for a good season finale. Helen and Vik's relationship up in the air, Noah having a mental breakdown, Helen admitting to being the driver and Allison admitting to being there, etc. All could have led to another season of story. Instead we get this week where it's a couple months later and none of that is even mentioned (though we did see Vik with Helen so we know they reconciled) and everything is hunky-dory. There wasn't even a comment from Whitney or Martin (is that Noah's son?) about Noah taking the fall for Helen. Usually a season ender will take some time to show the wrap-up for that season's stories but also introduce a few threads for the next season. I didn't see any of that here.

The weirdest part of that scene was that it was what happened from her point of view. In Noah's point of view he is inside the apartment trying to comfort her. So she is the one who initiated sex in the hallway hours after her dead husband was carried out on a stretcher.

Maybe Sarah Treem wanted a long trip to Paris or she wanted to work on her French.

I guess they felt they had to introduce this new character for the season -- for whatever reason -- and this episode was just closing her arc.

They got some good access, shooting on the streets and inside the Pantheon.  I've only visited once but I've never seen people spin themselves like the girls and Juliette did by that pendulum.

They cleared the slate for Noah andI guess Helen and the kids are now in a good place?

But they didn't touch base with Allison and Cole.  Is there any reason for the 4 main characters to intersect in each other's lives any more?  Well Noah will visit with the kids and maybe there will be more drama.  Or Helen will still continue to carry the torch for him.

But if Juliette is done with Noah, who was her way of moving on past her husband (he performed that function for Alison too), where is Noah going next?  That cabbie's question might as well have been for the show runners too.

I feel now that Alison would never go back to Noah. She realised and voiced that she was only with him to escape her life from Cole, due to the trauma of Gabriel's death. Once she was finally able to get passed the trauma, know that she does want to be a good, sane, stable and supportive mother to her other child Joanie AND is still in love with Cole, there's no reason for her to need or want Noah anymore. At least that's my opinion on that pairing.

To be honest, I'm trying to figure out exactly how Noah could afford a trip to Paris at Christmas time, let alone pay for his child's ticket back to the states.

LVP was Furkat because bad artists hitting women should be censured loudly and often

Along with the excuse, "he's an artist and he's passionate…"

Anyways….So the only explanation we get for Noah's near miraculous restoration is a couple of months dalliance with Prof. Frenchie. Last ep isode he was a gibbering, paranoid wreck but….all better now? Jeebus!

Oh, and producers. If you're gonna have long stretches with subtitles, as a favor to your older viewers could you make them a tiny bit larger than 9 pt. type.

The writing staff should be fired.  They took us on a long & agonizing path to nowhere.

  • Noah - we endured hallucinations, paranoia, & chaos for what?  Him being all fine at the end, in a good place mentally and able to offer solace & perspective to a minor character during her time of need?
  • Alison - we watched her picking up the pieces of her life after a supposed mental breakdown that we only heard reference to.  The actual breakdown would have been far more interesting for us to see.
  • Cole - we learned he can't ever really get over Alison.  The reasons that remain unexplained.
  • Helen - we saw her reach a breaking point after years of suppressing her guilt.  Why did it take 4 years for her to come to terms with this?

Very disappointing.

I still think that scene ended with Noah's father raping him.  Noah's sister ominously talking about something his father did to him after his mother died, paired with Noah's complete mental breakdown suggests nothing less IMO.  But instead that has all been abandoned in favor of a discarded screenplay for a French film that Sarah Treem wrote in college.

Pointless and dull. Sorry but I don't give a flying fuck about the Professor and her Cheating Alzheimer husband.  I mean, are we supposed to care about her because she helped to "save" Noah from Crazytown?  Ugh. No.

The only thing I liked even a little bit was Noah finally having just a shred of self awareness with his comment to Whitney about "failing to protect her from guys like... me." And the fact that he was finally at least trying to be a father to his daughter. He's got lots more work to make up for lost time though. LOTS.  Not to mention the other 3 kids.  But I'm sure a day in Central Park sledding will take care of all that, right? <<sarcasm>>
