And speaking of Jo I'd forgotten how she was introduced to the HW. Kimberly of the skin cancer storyline was lunching with her girlfriends and Jo stood staring at them until she bolstered up enough courage (yeah right) to go up and speak to them. She proceeded to spit out what I'm sure was Slade's cringe worthy fake kept woman storyline. Bad acting from the start!

Oh that was so contrived, Jo and her camera entourage approaching women who were lunching on camera!!!! Good times, I am watching the series from episode 1 and it really is such a different show. Matt Keough is actually doing some talking heads. Kara is cute in a Alicia Silverstone Clueless cute plus I like that she is close to her mother, complete opposite of Vicki and Brana (that's how Vicks calls her, lol).

And the house Slade and Jo 'live' in looks like a show house to me, all they ever do is stand in the kitchen and sip wine. And the one time Slade and his sons are supposedly cooking, nothing happens on screen except poor little Grayson scratching his itchy butt. God bless the poor child, but he was so adorable! The only redeeming thing about Slade are his two sons. Gosh, Jo pulls so many faces when she speaks it is annoying!!

Vicki and her sucky hole of neediness, Laurie and her wallet hunt, Kimberley and her enormous shop bought ta-tas, Jeanna and her genetics, happy days!

I remember HATING Slade's house. I thought it looked like such a cheap, overpriced piece of crap. I've never liked the real estate on OC (not my style), but Slade's was particularly ugly. I even liked Laurie's little condo better. At least it had some natural light...and furniture. Slade's house looked like bad corporate housing that was still being finished.

Season 1, episode 1 is on now and season 1, episode one of RHONJ is coming on next! :D

I watched this episode the other day - season 1 was really the best! I've seen it a few times now but it's like every time I re-watch it I pick up something new I never noticed before. The reaction of Lauri when Ashley moved home from LA is like unbelievable. You can just see the gears in Lauri's head turning like "another mouth to feed?" She was like there is no way I am going to financially support another human being. What a Mom! I agree they needed to have "the talk" about getting a job and contributing to expenses, but the way Lauri had deer-in-the-headlights over her child coming home, it was cringeworthy.

High School Brianna was just so beautiful! She look so pretty the night of her prom, like all-american California Girl.

Shane - I just felt bad for him. His parents were all about his baseball career and gave him no parental support or guidance outside of that. Of course he did not want to go to his High School Graduation, it wasn't even his High School. They moved him to a different school his senior year so he could be on a better team then his grades were so bad he didn't even play for said team (how bad would that have to be?). No wonder he did not want to participate. He probably didn't even know anyone or have friends at that school, and his parents were not even going to go. But they were glued to the computer during the draft - all so sad. And look at him now. "The offer was not excepted". (sigh)

Jo and Slade - what a train wreck. So Jo was like 25, and her storyline was that Slade wanted her to stop partying and be a wife/stepmom? Too funny.

I loved that the show was really about life in Coto and the people really knew each other and lived in the same circles.  This is what I would still want to see.  Lifestyle in one of these communities.

Poor selfish, shallow, gold digging Laurie. She really did look puzzled that her children expected her to parent them(even past the age of 18! The horrors!) when she clearly had them for child support checks and to pose for cheesy portraits on the beach. She look so bewildered that they couldn't understand this!

I felt for Shane too. He's a putz, but damn. His parents were like some sports version of the wicked stage parents from Hollywoods golden age you hear about. Like Patty Duke's guardians or something. It seemed like he was never allowed to do anything but baseball. I wasn't 100% sure he could read they way they neglected his education.

I can't swear what the regulations are for Shane's high school but in my old school you needed to have a minimum of a C or C+ (2 or 2.5) GPA to join in extracurricular stuff. I presume that's roughly applicable across the board. Frankly, if you can't manage a C you're basically not making any effort at all or turning in any assignments. Just about every school nowadays has all kinds of special help for struggling students, from tutoring on to almost anything you need--especially in a high end, wealthy community.

Shane assumed he could coast on his athletics, farted and fell. Of course he did; that's what his parents told to count on him from the time he was in his crib.

2.0 is pretty typical and as dumb as I think Shane is Id say he was capable of pulling that off. As a product of them myself, I have to say CA public schools are not exactly famous for their rigorous academics. A middle class kid like Shane with stable housing and food and no language barrier should be able to pull of Cs in a general High School program. I think his parent's didn't care and didn't make him go to class or do anything non-baseball related. I feel bad for him because while he sank to the lowest expectations I can't imagine he felt like he had much of a choice in his future. Can you imagine if he'd come to his parents and said he wanted to quit sports and join debate or the school play or take art classes? There is no way in hell they would have let that happen.

Gretchen is claiming Bravo wanted her to get married on the show, but she and Slade weren't ready.  When a follower said she and Slade fabricated the engagement stuff so they'd have a story line, Gretchen fired back:

Haha! You couldn’t be more wrong! We have been together for six years now and even after we left the show, so you can suck my right pinky toe! People like you that say shit look that clearly have never found true love like we have and I’m sorry for you. Take care and good luck.”

I've just started watching the series from the beginning (I've watched the past 3 seasons, but never saw the first few) and here's a question for you all:  I remember seeing talk on other threads about somebody's daughters having a...rough life lately (drugs, porn, etc).  At first I thought it was Lauri's girls, but now that Tammy is on the scene I'm thinking it's her kids. Can someone enlighten me?

Tammy's daughter Lindsey had a drunk driving arrest and altercation with the cops, but the real problem children are Lynn Curtin's daughters.  One did some porn, and the other one posts very graphic photos of herself on some website called Suicide Girls or something.

Thanks for the info!  I haven't seen Lynn yet.

I've watched BH, NJ & NYC from the beginning and also the one and done DC.  I'm struck by how different the early seasons of this show are from what we see now. There's much more focus on the individual ladies and less producer driven drama and forced social situations.  I'm curious to see how this franchise evolves from this to the clusterfuck we've come to know and love/hate.

Lynn is a piece of work, and so is her husband.  Totally delusional.  Without giving away too much, they were dead broke before joining the cast, and thought being on the show would be their road to riches.

They are gross. Maybe the grossest people to ever be on the franchise. And yes, I'm including the Salahi's. At least they weren't destroying a couple on teenagers on their path. My feeling on the Curtis is they were probably involved in a very sketchy sceen before having kids. I'm thinking dealing and some escort work. Tried to go straight when the girls came, only got as far as more legal scams like shitty house flipping (not the normal shitting kind, but the extra shitty kind involving mortgage fraud and unsafe renovations) and pyramid scams until the landed on TRHOC.

Its a two season change spanning season 4 through season 5. I think.hiring Alexis to replace jeana quickened the change...but when the show down graded fernanda in season 6 (who had an interesting life but didn't bring it with the other girls) that is when the change from old style to current style was complete

I think the big change came in S4.  That was the season they introduced Gretchen. Clearly she had a shady story, which Production had to have been aware of. She was kind of forced on them in a way. It all seemed so contrived and light years away from the way the show began. You had less and less of the gals on their own, and more of them engaging with each other even when it was obvious they didn't want to hang out with each other.  I have always thought that the Naked Wasted episode during that season was the episode that changed everything in the entire franchise.

Yes and no, I think Naked Wasted was the start.. but there were several instances in season 4 where the women were on their own.

Gretchen went to her college girlfriends reunion in Texas by herself, Tamra went to see her father by herself, Jeana took her youngest son to Wisconsin to see her parents.. plus, who can forget Vicki's hijinks were her high school friends as Jeana looked on in amusement/bewilderment LOL

I think season 4 was a perfect balance of the traditional style mixed with the current style we have now.

Plus, there were times in season 5 where not all the women hung out together.. case in point, Gretchen's tupperwear party where Tamra/Vicki opted not to go.. plus, we had Tamra's combo wig/bunco party where just Alexis and Lynn came along with former housewives Tammy and Quinn.

The thing I remember most was the time her daughter arrived (was it for her birthday eating out?) crying b/c her boyfriend thought her dress made her look slutty, which upset Lynn because it was the dress she borrowed most from her daughter! I think I was with my parents, who didn't watch this show, who were aghast by what just happened.

Lynne falls under the "too real" category for me. Not that she's a real person, but her problems are too real and not some for-the-cameras fake bullshit.

It's one thing if you're just a famewhore screaming in front of a camera crew while wearing a tacky satin cocktail dress, but there was something always unsettling about Lynne's off-camera life beyond leathery skin and fake boobs. You could tell there were some major parenting issues with that family, and oh gosh, that episode where they were served with the eviction notice was just painful to watch.

Yes to that and there are other HWs from this franchise that fall into that same delusional and unsettling real category for me. Currently RHBH Kim and RHNY Sonja fall into that place. I don't currently watch ATL but Moma Joyce may fall into place here too. Whereas other HWs fall into the bitch for hire category like Tamra and Brandi but not the unsettling feeling you mentioned.

Ah, Jeana and her genetically perfect in her eyes children. The daughter was the only one with a brain.

I caught episode one on Hulu a couple of days ago. My favorite part would have to be Lauri's bewilderment when her daughter returns home. "I thought my job was over" because parenting stops when the kid hits eighteen. "The only upside I can see to this is that I have a built-in babysitter."

Why did none of the children live with the husband? Were they from an earlier marriage?

I was also kind of surprised to see that Ashleigh was rather pretty back then, or at least pretty enough to follow in her mom's footsteps. But she also seemed (shockingly) too sweet - not that she'd necessarily be nice/kind, but like she was kind of clueless and naïve considering who her mother is and was.

How does someone stay in their home for 5 years after making no payments?

More than anything this just sets aside that rumor that had been lurking around (spurred by Peggy) that Bravo wanted her to come back but she decided against it. If this timeline is true, she was facing huge financial burdens back when she was on the show and likely wouldn't have walked away on her own.

I'm bored so I'm watching the S1 DVDs.  Googled Kim Bryant and they have apparently relocated to Austin, TX for Scott's job.  Lauri's daughter Ashley seems to suffer from failure to launch.  Her life seems to consist of "modeling" and hanging out with Lauri and George.  She's in her 30s.  It also appears that Lauri and George have custody of Josh's daughter Kennedy.

Austin, TX?  Well, so much for the sun exposure/skin cancer bullshit.  They hauled ass from OC after Scott hit a woman at a party.  Good times.

Yup. I imagine busty ol' Kimberly is dreaming of the RHs starting an Austin franchise (actually, I'm surprised there isn't a Texas batch of broads or has one slipped past me?) Throughout that season, we saw her covered from the sun exactly once: the episode when she went to her dermatologist. Every other ep had her outside in barely there tank tops, scanty dresses and so on. Melanoma is a bitch. She was an idiot.

Kimberly made an appearance on Shear Genius ( I think) in an ep that featured current and a few former HWs getting coif makeovers. She looked to have downsized the Ds and removed her long scraggly hair extensions. Perhaps the move to Texas will inspire her yet again. She'd best stay away from Dallas -- Kelli from MTTDCC might snatch her up for a makeover.

It is funny to watch the older seasons, I think the years give you a different kind of objectivity.  I caught a S3 Ep on my DVR and watched it last night.  The scene where Ryan is going to move back in to the Barney household, and Simon has to sit him down and have a talk with him.  I mean like I get it that Ryan was a slacker, had no real direction in life and no job, but Simon was such a huge dick.  He had this pre-printed out "contract" in a folder for Ryan to look over, and it had a  list of about 25 "rules".  Wow - the expression on Ryan's face was too much, I actually felt bad your him.  He was 21 at the time, and trying to come home after leaving at age 18.  Yikes!

I actually liked that Simon was clear. I'd bet Tamra always agreed with Simon and then backed down with Ryan. Ryan's behavior has gotten him into huge trouble medically and I'm concerned for him. I wish he had gotten more help and direction earlier in his life. Oddly his current relationship seems to be working and I wish him well.

Yes I agree he needed direction. But Simon was a dick.  Before he even went over anything he made sure Ryan knew that he was the source of conflict between Simon and Tamra and that when Ryan lived there before they were talking about divorce.  ??  Who says this to a kid?  He was 18 when he moved out and went to live with Tamra's mom, and three years later at 21 he was trying to move back.  I can see having a list of ground rules but the paper had like 25 things listed.  Choose your battles man.  Anyone with kids knows that is not going to work, you're just going to push them in the opposite direction.

Ryan's face was like "please get me out of here".

An interview with one-and-done Lydia about her experiences during and after her Housewives experience.

Interesting that she's launching a book...a book in which Heather Dubrow refused to sign a release to be mentioned.

She says she is now friends with Gretchen and still is friends with Alexis.

Anyway, interesting read and don't miss the video interview at the end of the article, which has more information...

I've hit Season 6 - what's the deal with Peggy?  In one of her first scenes, she's in the bathroom in a backless top getting ready to go to what I presumed was dinner or cocktails or something.  Nope.  Going to the gun range. Because nothing says shootin' off your guns like a backless shirt and heels.  I hate her already.

The production values improved dramatically with this season, in my opinion, and, although the show became more contrived, its veneer also became slicker and more palatable. Peggy was unsettling, her husband even more so, but she was sort of interesting in terms of novelty, at least for me - the holistic, unpasteurized milk ethos was new to me for the most part.

I thought season 6 was one of the worst seasons. I had no interest in Peggy or the ongoing Gretchen/Alexis vs Tamra battle. Season 7 introduced Heather and saw the alliances changing and I feel like the show has been on a good run since then.
