Post-Election Fears & Anxieties

For the white women feeling terrible today....just came across this Huff Post article that might sum up the feeling of shame.

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_582341c9e4b0aac62488970e

Though, personally I think we're all to blame.  Blacks didnt come out in the numbers we needed to. The hispanic vote....IDK where they were.  I didnt hear about them all night and they were the ones that was supposed to drive Trump out of town. Young people....must have gotten sidetracked with the latest challenge on instagram.  Hillary got 5 million less votes than Obama got in 2012 and 9 million less than what he got in 2008.

Hillary can take some of the blame too.  Last night CNN said she had not stepped foot in Wisconsin since her nomination because the campaign was soo sure they had it in the bag.  Not saying a visit or 2 would have changed the outcome but thats just the sort of arrogance that cost her (much like setting up a private email server against the advice of top level people).

Well, I now have a small supply of valium on hand and the first one went down the hatch a few minutes ago. They're only 5mg, so it may take a few to get me mellow. (I should have asked the doctor for 10mg, she was willing.) Earlier this morning I was playing on my Kindle trying to forget the world and my hands started shaking so badly I couldn't hold the stylus. I certainly didn't vote for McCain or Romney but I think I would have felt disappointment if they had won but not the despair I feel right now.

I also made a donation to Planned Parenthood, heaven knows they're going to need the money.

Look for those of you who voted for Hilary, this is not the time to lay down and die.  This is the time to rise up and fight (not literal violence).  The Democrats have got to take responsibility where things went wrong.  If our foremothers and forefathers just said, "well slavery and misogyny is just the way it is and curled up in a ball and hid, think about where we would be?  Women and minorities would not have the vote and every inch of respect earned has and will always be a fight.

When I hear of Trump supporters harassing voters, I am like where are the Dems protecting their constituents?  Don't just say get out and vote, help organize buses and other things so the disenfranchised can be heard.

I live in a red state and do you know why, because liberal strongholds are much too expensive for regular people.  I just read a story about a 66 year old woman, who earned a six figure salary in San Francisco now being homeless, because she can no longer afford rent in the city.  She is a single woman and has proudly supported herself her whole life and is being thrown into the streets by this supposedly liberal and progressive town.

Get all the rage and sorrow out of your system the next few days.  After that this is not the time to be emotional, it is the time to be strategic and smart.

THANK YOU. Again, I'm vacillating back and forth wildly today between hope and misery. I also made myself a matcha latte and now I don't know if I can take ibuprofen for my headache because of the sprained ankle/bruising situation.

I am not leaving the house today. But I am talking to you. And I will take a shower. And I will do the little things I need to do to make it through so I can fight another day.

Update, they're gloating to each other and their TV friends but at least my parents aren't gloating to me when I'm in the room. Also, Fox Business is doing it's best but NO, THIS IS NOT MY NEW NORMAL. Making this acceptable got us into this mess in the first place.

Right.  Contrast that with the butt hurt rage that manifested itself before Hillary was even in danger of being elected.  I won't forget the assassination threats by Drumpf's more rabid supporters or the threats of sedition by GOP lawmakers who were hellbent on derailing her would-be presidency.

Never mind the assassination threats by his supporters, he was basically making them himself.

I really don't believe there was any (or much) fraud or rigging, outside of the constant attention and legitimacy given Trump by the media. I think there was a gross underestimation of the level of unrest and bigotry that Trump was able to tap into.  I don't think Bernie could have won either. I don't know who could have.  At this point, after watching what happened last night, I'm not even sure that Obama (were he allowed to run a third time) could have beat him.

Now, in hindsight, I don't think anyone could have beaten him. He's some kind of Svengali.

I will just say this. And if it comes across as unAmerican, so be it. But I will say this without cursing and without insults: Donald Trump is not my president. He will never be my president. And this is okay because this same creed has been used for the last 8 years towards the current administration. And free speech prevails.

Good luck, America. I'll say a prayer and hope we live to see 2020.

This.  And he is not my president and never will be.  How I dread going back to work tomorrow and seeing all those smug, hateful faces.  I really hope we live to see 2020 :(

Finally coming out of my just-can't-stand-it bunker. I'm glad to see you're all still here and are using this as a place to process what's happened. I'm going to spend the next couple of weeks getting used to my new hip (which is fucking fantastic, I must say), binge-watching whatever I can find on Netflix and Amazon, and learning how to make fancy French macarons. I'll try to keep compassion in mind when I think about Trump supporters but I'm glad I don't have to deal with any directly right now. Because, sweet baby cheesus, what the fuck.

I am still wearing my "Stronger together" T-shirt (we need it more than ever) and I plan to keep my Clinton/Kaine lawn sign up as long as possible.  Not that I'll need any reminders, but still . . . .

Regarding Trump's plans for the economy:  Ok, now put up or shut up.  If he really does put coal miners and factory workers back to work at above minimum wage, I'll be the first to admit his plan worked.  As long as nonwhites also benefit from these millions of jobs too.

BUT, what I don't want to see happen and think will:  All the lies he's told will just be forgotten about.  Voter fraud, for example.  Nothing will be done about voter fraud because it doesn't exist.   Somehow, he needs to be held accountable for that whopper, but he won't be.

Right down to foisting a plastic homemade tape porn star turned wife on us as FLOTUS.  Of course, her pet cause will be eliminating famewhoring.

Since our standards are already in the gutter, we might as well go all the way.

I love this man. No one has as of yet offered me the kind of assurance that can bring my happiness back. But that is why it's ever more important to nurture that little light inside and make sure it never goes out. Have hope. Have faith. Know that a little seed can grow into a great big tree with extensive roots and branches. But only if we plant it. Today we mourn. Tomorrow we regroup. And soon, when were called upon to do so, we must stand firm and fight in the best way we know how.

Lol.... not at all.  Ive been reading this thread all day long and Ive seen various posts from white women saying they feel ashamed or embarrased.  Then I came across this Huff Post article basically saying the same thing.

Like I said....we ALL can take a big piece of the blame pie.  No demographic is immune this time around. We all fucked up.

What bugs me is...I can kind of understand not voting for Hillary. Like I said in one of my earlier posts, I thought about not voting for her too (but thought better of it eventually). But what I cant understand is how any black, hispanic or woman could vote FOR Trump.  I think something like 13% of black men voted for Trump.  Why? The article I linked said 53% of white women voted for Trump.  Why? How can you vote for someone that doesnt even respect you on a basic human level.

I can't. I can't go here. It was a wonderful, beautiful thing that the first vote I cast for president in my lifetime was for a woman. Just because I hate this man and what he represents, I can't start slutshaming his wife. I can't attack her appearance. I may hate what she is supporting by her "stand by her man" position but I'm not going to attack her for being a woman. I'm not going backwards. I have been making a concerted effort to excise certain words and thoughts from my daily life. Attacking other women just deepens the hold internalized misogyny has on our society. I may dislike things she does as a person but I will not attack her for the ways in which she is female or has suffered/profited in exploiting a patriarchal system. Instead, I want to focus on building up a more diverse, empowered image of what women can be both in real life (Senators, artists, businesswomen, students, etc.) and in fiction. Perhaps I will get some writing done when my head feels like it's not about to roll off my neck. Maybe if I can get my shit together one day I can call myself one of those women.

Prexy Trump is a disaster, no doubt.  But I'll tell you I was MUCH more depressed when Reagan won the SECOND time, back in 1984.  I could understand how people might be fooled into voting for a radical-right-wing  movie actor once - but TWICE???? after they'd already seen what he was like?  That was bad.  I had friends that left the USA because of it.

And you know what?  It didn't last forever, did it?  I can say in the words of Adrienne Rich that "a wild patience has taken me this far" and that's what we all have to remember.  I also loved Tim Kaine's quote from William Faulkner:  "they kilt us, but they didn't whup us."

Trump's a nightmare, but he's just one guy.  This is depressing, but none of this is over.  Not unless we give up.

Well I listen to black radio and apparently the black men can sit in the basket with this demographic because they said he got a substantial percentage of the black male vote. By the way, this didn't surprise me at all, that fake snake oil, salesman preacher Daryl Scott surrogate that Trump had is all you need to know. There were a ton of misogynist, homophobic black men just like him, crime bill my ass.

I just got an email from Vanguard inviting investors to a live video webcast this evening on how the election (specifying Trump's presidency and Republican control of Congress) may affect portfolios.  (No thanks; I'm depressed enough.)  I don't remember ever getting something like that following any other election, and certainly not something the next day with language in it meant to calm down frightened people.

Perhaps Trump will show a sense of humor and appoint Ted Cruz as Ambassador to Canada.

Speaking of, last night's results eliminates whatever slim hopes Ted Cruz or Marcio Rubio had for the 2020 Republican nomination.  Of course, they'll still both be younger than Trump is now in the 2040 election.

Thank you all for being here.  I'm experiencing many of the same emotions: depression, fear, anger, shock.  I also stayed at home today because I feel physically ill.  It's nice to know there are thoughtful, like minded souls out there.  I cried during her concession speech, but I'm determined to put it behind me and work towards a better America.  And I work for DOJ, y'all.  So you know who my new boss might be.  *shudders*

thanks for doing that. I tried to google homes in Cape Breton and kept getting a 'connection was reset' notice. I tried other websites for Canadian properties and the same thing. Then I went to other various websites not at all related to Canada or homes and they all pulled up fine, it was only the Canadian property links when blank when I clicked on one. Oh, and they look expensive but keep in mind the Canadian dollar is only worth 74% of the US dollar, that's why people are planning to relocate there.

Remember the Canadian Dollar is worth about 75% of a US dollar.

Still going out to drink Italian wine tonight.  My brother in Italy says I can come live with him, but I think we'll be okay...at some point.

And for the folks who were worried and haven't listened to the news today (I didn't turn it on until about an hour ago), the market was up bigly today.  So go ahead and open those Vanguard emails.  We're okay in that department, at least for today.

Of course, you're right.  I'm just so disgusted by the fact that Drumpf and his despicable family are moving into the White House.  And, yes, that includes his massively dense wife, Melania, who is just as despicable as her husband is.  It has nothing to do with her standing by her man; she's despicable in her own right.

So when people start talking about Kanye, I criticize his wife within the context of how we went from having the Obamas in the White House to the Drumpf family moving in.  That people somewhere want to make a possible Kanye run for the White House "a thing" simply appalls me.

Not to mention his elevating his loyal surrogates to cabinet positions.  There was even talk of his elevating Corey Lewandowski as RNC Chair.  I won't even talk about Bannon and his influence.

As for the GOP House and Senate, they will fall in line and do his bidding especially since their constituents back home put him in office.  That's why so many of them flipflopped when they "repudiated" him after the Access Hollywood tape.  Their constituents back home weren't having it.

Plus his VP Pence will be charged with compiling a short list of Supreme Court nominees.

Yes, I know.  That's why we can't leave something so important  to those people.  There's more to politics than electoral politics and although it would have been easier to hold Hillary's feet to the fire Trump is going to discover what every President before him has discovered - he can't just ignore us.

A lot of people were on the verge of tears at work today while the students appeared to be blissfully unaware of just how bad their lives are going to get. Please do go about your normal business and ignore that seventh seal breaching over there.

Now I'm home and I can't bear to turn on the TV. The worst of this will pass eventually but right now I just want to seek asylum anywhere that isn't here.

I feel like so many of us are tired and depressed and exhausted. But there is another way. There is hope and love. And we can choose it. I will nurture my hopes for myself and our country and the world. The hope that we can be better. The hopes that minds will eventually change. The hope that we will see this through. I will act out of love and compassion and not fear and hatred. When I fight it will be with love in my heart for those who need it most. And because it has been FAR TOO LONG since the last adorable animal...

I work in a federal office.  Just about everyone was in today, but the halls were silent as the grave.  And in other news, as of January 20, my 22 year career will end, as I CANNOT stand in any courtroom and say that I represent this administration.  I can't do it.

Yeah, I might need some happy pills to keep functioning for a little while. I can't even pretend to "go high" right now.

I talked to my parents in Michigan and they said, "well, I guess now our goal is to live long enough to vote again in 2020 and get things back on track." Seriously, WTF, Michigan and Wisconsin? Yes, sure, the orange menace will take all those scary minorities away and then you'll feel "cared about"? Seriously - f*ck you.

I apologized to my sister on behalf of Wisconsin today.  She knows I did my part and Madison went for HRC.  Then again, this is the same person who wanted to modify the Wisconsin plates on her car from "America's Dairyland" to "Land of the Dumbasses" while she worked out in Maryland as a civilian Army contractor after Walker was reelected in 2014.

She was disappointed in Michigan but pleased that Ann Arbor went blue.

I really don't know what the Democrats can do to woo back the working class voters who voted for Trump.  I really don't think many of them realize that the Tea Party GOPers who came into office after 2010 made the unemployment safety net much less secure than it was for those who benefited between 2008 and 2010.  It's also been made much more difficult to apply and keep EBT (food stamps) since then as well.  Housing assistance in the form of Section 8 vouchers have always been tough to get.  My worst fear is that the combination of his election and his economic policies will reverse any economic gains made under Obama, thus bring the recession back.  Most lack the self awareness that their own voting patterns created this problem and they are partially to blame.

Some three months ago, my husband, retired from the Navy, was offered two jobs out of the blue at virtually the same time. One was in Virginia, the other in Nova Scotia. Of course, Nova Scotia was a far more exciting prospect, but since selling our house in Connecticut and both moving was not an option for a variety of reasons, we finally decided that the logistics of maintaining two households and commuting back and forth for brief visits every few weeks combined with Canadian/Nova Scotia taxes (each takes their own hefty share) did not make the Nova Scotia job really tenable...we'd end up clearing very little on it when all was said and done, so he accepted the job in Virginia. We joked, at the time, that we'd end up regretting it if Trump was elected...It really was not even on our radar that this was a real possibility. But it is actually becoming a real regret.
