And the song is called "Gold Digger".. .... lol.... sooo...... I agree she didn't make it her mission in life, but to say that Carrie was never a golddigger at the beginning of the show is really rewriting history.  She didn't intend to go out and find a rich man, but Big's status, power, and money were DEFINITELY part of his appeal to Carrie.  THE MAN HAD HIS OWN DRIVER.  Carrie saw that in the FIRST episode.  THE MAN HAS NEVER DRIVEN HIS OWN CAR IN SIX SEASONS AND TWO MOVIES.

download.jpeg

For the record, I said the show tried hard not to paint her as a gold digger, not that she was not one.

When she first meets Big, she is shocked that a guy so out of her league would ever be interested in her. It was like the feeling any regular Joe would have if a supermodel suddenly started hitting on them.

She did not like the Euro trash guys spending on her because it made her feel cheap.

By the end of the series, the show had abandoned its grittier realistic elements for pure fantasy. Carrie attracted rich men, not because she was a gold digger but because they genuinely loved her, even though she could be a feather brained self centered  shrew.

It was like when Miranda insisted her law firm cut her down to working only 80 hours a week. We are supposed to believe that this woman who had so much free time to hang out with her friends worked 100 plus hour weeks?

At that time, I was single and worked at my law firm a little over 65 hours a week. I remember being constantly exhausted and having to bow out of a lot of fun time with my friends, who did not have my hectic schedule. I worked a lot on Saturdays and would be too tired to even think about going out Saturday night, even for a basic dinner.

They always made a point of never showing Carrie as a gold digger. Truthfully, she really was not one in earlier seasons. It was later when her financial sensibilities seemed as smart as a hamster that you begin to wonder how she survived a week in NYC by herself, let alone years.

But she wanted to. Miranda (and I think Charlotte also) talked her out of it.  I wouldn't have seen a problem with her taking the money if she had paid him back.

Do I think the writers and Carrie herself think she is a gold digger? No.  Do I think we the viewers saw her act like one?  Maybe.  I also would says she was a snob.  She hated Aidan's cabin. She (and Charlotte) thought carnations weren't good enough flowers to give someone.

I personally think she wanted to be what was once called a socialite.  She wanted to go to parties and she wanted to spend her days shopping and doing lunch with the girls.

I think, if I remember correctly, Carrie told Big she was asking for a loan & would pay it back.

Again, I think she was not one in earlier seasons and you disagree.

Whether realistic or not, she had been living independently in NYC for many years and had a popular column on her own steam, way before the days of social media gave everyone a platform to promote themselves.

It was this Carrie that many of us originally liked.

We can agree to disagree.

The Euro trash guy wasn't simply "spending on her".  He paid her directly for sex, which even golddiggers have a problem with.  It's not like he just got her flowers.

Charlotte hated carnations, and Carrie liked them, if I recall correctly.

Berger:  Would you dump a guy if he brought you carnations?
Carrie:  Me? No, but I happened to like carnations, especially the pink ones.  In fact, I think they're making a comeback.  I would, however, throw away a guy for wearing dark siders or top-siders or any of the above.
Charlotte:  No, those are cute!

I liked Carrie in the early seasons too, but Big was a millionaire, that is just fact, and Carrie liked him.  And she was nowhere near his wealth level.   It's not like they went on several dates and THEN Carrie found out.  Carrie knew from the second time that she met him.

The ones that I was acquainted with understood that sex would eventually become part of the equation. They either got all they could and got out before it got to that point or reached some sort of "agreement" with their benefactor.

However, I do agree that the European guys were looking for what most people would call "high end escorts" than the typical gold digger.

She didn’t take the money because the show wanted to continue the narrative that Carrie was somehow a “naive victim of the machinations of the shrewdly, mysterious Mr Big” (which was always - crappy lie in my opinion). Big wasn’t offering her the money with some slimy ulterior motive or to hold it over Carrie’s head—he was in a position financially to help her out of a jam, so he did. That whole episode is a hot ass mess, from Carrie dramatically ripping up the check in front of the girls, to her brow-beating Charlotte to pay for her apartment (as if Charlotte is obligated to do so...gimme a break). Carrie was always VERY ENTITLED, yet didn’t want to be seen as entitled. Season 1 Carrie was a bit different (actually very different), and was more in-line with Candace Bushnell’s version of Carrie. Once SJP became Exec producer in Season 2, her and MPK turned Carrie into a judgy, entitled, immature 30-something woman...and expected everyone to be charmed by that

As for Miranda/Carrie’s argument about Carrie running to Paris with Alek...I LOVE that Miranda asked Carrie the pertinent questions. Carrie wanted all the girls to just smile and nod at her choice to move halfway around the world, like obedient Yes-Women. That was NEVER the nature of their relationship, and Carrie herded ALWAYS had questions whenever one of the girls made a life or relationship choice/decision.

Her temper tantrum she threw at the table (“Then stop killing it with questions!”)...is something you’d expect from a 19-year old, or someone who hasn’t experienced life yet. Carrie was 38, rushing off to Europe with a man she had only been with a couple of months (and at his insistence), with no set plan as to what she was gonna do with her life. Miranda was a true friend for actually making sure that Carrie had the answer to much needed questions. Carrie, predictably, had to be snarky and claim Miranda “just wanted her to stay in NYC and be single.”

Nobody told Sam to stay away from Smith, nobody told Sam to stay away from LA, nobody told Miranda to stay away from Brooklyn (watching the episode where she moves now), nobody told Charlotte to stay away from Harry (although they were shocked that she was converting religions).  So, yeah, I think Miranda is judgemental and a hypocrite and even if you think your adult friend is making a (totally not harmful) mistake, it's theirs to make.  I have a lot of close female friends, and time and time again, judging them for their life choices is never the way to go.  It's been proven to me so many times.

For me, Charlotte and Sam were the "true friends" while I think that Carrie spoke a lot of harsh truths about Miranda and Miranda's selfishness about the whole ordeal.  Carrie also said that it was "the most romantic thing that has ever happened to" her and I think that every woman deserves moments like that.

I understand questioning a 19 year old running off to Paris - if you're their parent - but absolutely not a 38 year old woman if you're their friend.  Not the way Miranda handled it.  Miranda was clearly having a meltdown because she wanted Carrie to stick around forever and that's fine if she was upfront about it but it took way way too long to admit it.

It goes both ways.  In the first movie, when Steve cheats on Miranda and Miranda can't forgive him, I am 100% Team Miranda and I think Carrie was awful to her.  It's about being supportive of your friend and understand that THEIR life isn't yours to live.

Go home to NYC with her tail tucked between her legs telling Miranda she was right?

As if the writers or SJP would ever have Carrie admit any of the other 3 were right.

Carrie wasn't the stereotypical gold digger whose life mission was to land a rich man, physical attraction and true love be damned. She was still a romantic and had genuine interest in all the men she had relationships with. BUT she didn't necessarily like to mess with broke guys either.

Not her life mission, but at times she does come off as kind of a gold-digger who deluded herself into thinking it was all about the romance? She definitely leaned more towards men who gave good credit.

I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if the best night of sex Aidan had with her was when he offered to buy her apartment for her.

Probably because all 3 of those women had show a certain maturity when it came to their lives that Carrie never did.

Carrie arrives in Paris.

Hotel concierge:  Ah, American?

Carrie:  New Yorker.

Okay Carrie, lol, who gives a shit.  So you're not an American then?  LOL.

There's such a good scene when Big comes to the restaurant.  Charlotte greets him with a beatific smile and Samantha and Miranda greet him with a death glare.

They look like this.

maxresdefault.jpg

Carrie flits all around Paris acting so embarrassingly at first.  She speaks in this "I'm such a whimsical child" voice and it's so funny.  I feel like, of course Aleks is going to concentrate on his exhibit.  It'd be a couple of weeks on, then a couple of weeks off, and on and on.  You kind of have to understand that that's the life of an artist.  If Carrie really loved him, she would get it, but I think the show was trying to portray that she did not so they could put her back with Big.

It's an interesting question.  If Big took her to Paris, specifically because he had to do Important Business there, would Carrie understand?  Honestly, probably not.  She's too self-involved.  That's why she only works in NYC.  She has her friends and her distractions there.

Then again, Big did leave to Napa.  Was that a retirement on his part?

I don't know about saying some of those things "wouldn't fly today". What's wrong with having traditional values or not being a feminist, or wanting to have a committed relationship especially when you're in your 30s?

I definitely hated her comment about the nail techs in The Caste System, but I don't think it was about race. I noticed before that at least 2 of the girls were white. But it was still rude to imply that they were beneath her.

I did also hate her being judgmental of Sam  considering she slept around a lot herself at times. And she did annoy me in the prenup episode. "I'm only worth $500,000?!" Girl get over yourself! Lol

So we’re going to pretend that Smith, Harry and Steve were the only relationships the girls had?? Lmao

Shall we talk about how when Sam wanted to get back with Richard, Carrie said “DNR....Do Not Resuscitate” and then said her next column title would be “Desperate Women who will believe anything.”; or how about that time Sam wanted to date Chivon, and she gave that nauseatingly INSULTING ASS comment “talk about Affirmative Action”; or when Sam announced she was dating Maria and Carrie said to Charlotte and Miranda, “poof...Im a fire hydrant...I wanted to be one, so I am”. Or when Miranda was dating a guy Carrie had seen YEARS earlier (and not seriously), and she couldn’t wait to tell Miranda “I told you so” when he went into “asshole mode”. She was constantly judging her friend’s romantic choices, and never shied away from telling her friends about her true feelings. But Miranda asking her pertinent questions about what she’s going to do professionally, etc is somehow worthy of Carrie being a snarky 12-year old and claiming Miranda “just wants her to stay in NY and single.”?? Gimme a break. Carrie wanted the girls to be her Yes-Women, when that was NEVER the nature of their bond. That doesn’t mean Carrie can’t make her own choice—of course she can. But your family (which they were for each other), has the right to express themselves

Charlotte’s disgusting attitude towards the Asian nail techs in “The Caste System” as well as to Sam dating Chivon in Season 3....always made my blood boil. It wasn’t endearing or “a place the character could evolve from”...it was racial bias, which is ABSURD being that the girls lived in New York City. I didn’t know how the show got away with that in 1999-2000 on HBO

Feminism is by definition equality. Unfortunately now there are a lot of negative connotations to it. I see nothing wrong with a career woman who wants to be single and have lovers like Samantha, nor someone who wants a committed relationship and even wants to be a housewife like Charlotte. Different lifestyles make different people happy. I don't know why there's so much judgment toward both sides.

I vaguely remember that scene. I definitely don't think Charlotte was a hateful racist, but she wasn't "woke" like Kristin Davis is. I picture Charlotte as the type of person who thinks racism is a thing of the past because she seemed all conservative but would ball her eyes out over George Floyd or Elijah McClain because she was softhearted.

Yeah the funny thing about Charlotte was that even though she wasn't Samantha, she got around a fair amount to be such a goody two shoes. In my circle, the girl that hooks up with someone she doesn't know at a wedding and has a painter do a portrait of her hoo-ha IS SAMANTHA.

The only correction I would make is that Charlotte was not quitting her job to be a housewife. She was quitting her job to be the pampered wife of a rich man. She said she had to quit the gallery position to "start a family" even before discussing whether or not Trey was feeling the same way. It really did not make sense that she could not do both, at least for a little while. The thing that confused me was not that Charlotte wanted to have a more traditional life, but that she seemed to really love her job and knew it was a gallery position that was not going to be easily replaceable.

True. I would also add that her issue with Trey's impotence wasn't the impotence itself but rather his refusal to face it and deal with it.

I'm currently rewatching the whole series and am halfway through season 4. I've always been a big Carrie/Big shipper, but  man, now that I'm older and hopefully wiser, I do see that Aidan was a freakin' dreamboat. And Carrie was so awful to him, and not only because she cheated on him with Big. Damn.

I realize that men like Aidan only exist in fiction, a normal, living, breathing man would have kicked Carrie's sorry ass way sooner.

I guess for women who enjoy drama, like Carrie, Aidan was too boring being a cute, nice straightforward guy who had his life together and was crazy about her. A lot of the time the nice, safe choice is someone unattractive/broke. Aidan was neither. He was cute as hell and had money even though he wasn't flashy. I admit Big was more glamorous and unpredictable, but those qualities weren't enough to make him the better choice imo, not for a woman Carrie's age who did yearn for a longterm relationship. I can see the more exciting guy being appealing to a woman in her early 20's or someone like Sam who just wanted to have fun.

Aidan was great but Carrie just didn’t want him. Period. I think she got back with him the second time because she was single and knew how much he liked her. She never should’ve accepted his marriage proposal.

Yes, I real life Aidan would’ve been married (or widowed) already and had lots of options for women who wanted to date him, especially in a place like NYC- it would be harder for him to meet someone in a smaller community where most of the women over 30 were married or partnered already.

Agreed on reasons stated for why she wanted him back. I think she wanted to fix the hurt she caused.. but instead caused more. I think regardless of the affair though Aidan wanted a traditional wife with kids that she Wouldn’t have been into so I think it would have ended up the same regardless. She just caused a lot more hurt with the cheating.

Yeah Aidan did want to get married and have kids- he seemed to always be upfront about that. He would’ve been fine with Carrie and her writing career, as well as her close relationship with her friends, but he would’ve wanted to have a nuclear family and that be the focus of his life.

Carrie’s cheating didn’t surprise me given how hung up she was on Big, and how she didn’t even really want Aidan, AND the fact that Big was married made him “forbidden”. Had Big been single I think she would’ve strung him along emotionally but not cheated on Aidan because she would’ve wanted to hold her devotion to Aiden over Big’s head.

Well the Carrie character did influence a lot of viewers.  I myself have been known to steal a fashion statement from her on occasion.

But if Carrie was being a social influencer in her 30s that would have been really sad. She probably would be a blogger or writer for Buzzfeed or something.  It would be interesting to see how the show would have been written 20 years later.  When the show first aired texting and smart phones weren't a thing yet. No social media. No MeToo movement.

Also, Carrie got to "win" this way.  When Big married Natasha, Natasha "won".  When Big cheated on Natasha with Carrie, then Carrie gets to win.

That was Season 4.  No cellphone.  It seems crazy now!  It was 2001.  Even "Clueless" from 1995, those teenage girls had cellphones. Though maybe that was a Beverly Hills culture thing?

Maybe she was too cool for a cellphone.... perhaps it would dampen her free spirit vibe? Carrie was not known for making practical choices.

I'm still trying to dress like Charlotte. Her style is so feminine and classy and modern. People always cite Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly as style icons. As much as I admire them as timeless icons, much of their fashion isn't the most wearable in 2020.

They were really good with matching up each character with their own unique fashion sense and style,  though of course, Carrie probably would not be able to afford a lot of what she wore in later seasons as the show became much more fantasy than reality.

True. I'm also a fan of Carrie's. Her style was more sexy and trendy than Charlotte's. I just find Charlotte's more practical and cozy. Samantha's style was also sexy and tasteful. Miranda's was the most businesslike and least feminine/sexy, so it was my least favorite tbh.

That was Season 4.  No cellphone.  It seems crazy now!  It was 2001

Maybe she was too cool for a cellphone.... perhaps it would dampen her free spirit vibe?

Kelly Ripa used to be like that. Said she had no time for "technology". A lot of viewers (myself included) thought she was putting on an act. Like she was just so above it all.

I'm still trying to dress like Charlotte. Her style is so feminine and classy and modern. People always cite Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly as style icons. As much as I admire them as timeless icons, much of their fashion isn't the most wearable in 2020.

Charlotte's style was very similar to Grace Kelly, Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn. I think out of the all the women Charlotte's style was the most timeless. When I do a rewatch there is always something of Charlotte's that I think yep I could wear that today.

Yes, Patricia Field who styled them said she was really inspired by Jackie and Audrey actually. Me too. I often think of Charlotte's outfits when I shop for pretty dresses. :)

They were really good with matching up each character with their own unique fashion sense and style,

This is absolutely true. Samantha was confident and sexy and her wardrobe reflected that. Charlotte was traditional and wanted to look the part of the good little WASP.  Miranda was the independent career woman who wanted to look nice but not draw too much attention.  But Carrie's wardrobe was just all over the map.  You can tell a lot by the way a person dresses and with Carrie I would be hard pressed to describe Carrie based on  her clothes.  Maybe attention seeking.  What other reason is there for a grown woman to dress up like Heidi?

Personality wise I’m much more like Miranda but style wise I’m a Charlotte. Professionally Id dress like Miranda but with a few more feminine touches. Being shaped like a fertility statue also means the full skirts and nipped waist works for me no matter the decade.

We kinda sound like twins! Charlotte's romanticism got on my nerves. lol But I loved her aesthetically.

I'm a combination of Miranda and Samantha. I do incorporate a lot of Charlotte style into my wardrobe.  I don't like trendy things so I don't dress too much like Carrie except for the heels. Love me some heels.  I once asked different people to name things they know about me and they all said shoes. I also liked the green dress she had on when the mugger took her shoes.  Miranda wore a lot of suits which for myself I don't like but I did like a lot of her casual dressy things.  Every once in awhile Pat Fields would dress Miranda in a Boho chic kinda a way which I thought was odd because that was not Miranda's personality at all.

It was all designer in Seasons 4-6!!!  Or at least mostly!  So crazy.

Carrie wears red when she was mugged.  But I love green too.
