I can argue that with Sam sleeping with any hot guy that walked. She didn't end up with some disease or an "oopps" pregnancy. Even going to the point how she was trying to keep her sex drive going into her 50s. At times I was to the point going: "you know, I'm tired of Sam trying to seek some guy to fuck."

Sam did have two abortions at some point in her life before Season 3-4 when Miranda considers having one.  I personally don't care about Sam trying to have sex with everyone and anyone, just not married guys.  If she's not hurting people I don't care.

I have been rewatching from season 1 and I’m sorry but I still just love this show.  And miss this show.  Maybe because it was the happiest time of my real life while it was on, and the nostalgia gets to me.  I know there’s a lot to pick apart but I can never get enough.  I laugh, I cry.  It’s like a comfy blanket.  💝💝💝

I need to do the same. I was about to make a similar post. There will always be a special place in my heart for this show. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I haven't personally seen a show about the lives of unmarried women over 30 that brought comedy, heart, fashion, love and of course sex all in the backdrop of NYC, a city I had always thought would be a blast to live in as a single woman. There were definite fantasy elements to the show. I know many aspects weren't realistic, but I loved that they showed not all women want to settle down. I thought it was great they showed even someone as pretty as Charlotte who did yearn for a life partner struggled. The show featured more reality than it was given credit for imo.

Yeah, that's the difference between Sam and Carrie. Sam's sexcapades didn't really have any bearing on the other women. Carrie's was at times just a downright asshole to the rest of the women at times, and god was it frustrating to watch.

My favorite duo was Charlotte and Anthony.  It was especially funny watching them shop for a wedding dress and seeing him go into wedding planner mode.  He could be brutal, but he got the job done!!  I really loved Charlotte's wedding dress for her second marriage.  I don't remember much about the first one, but the second one had a more delicate look to it and Kristin was really beautiful in that dress.  Of course she's beautiful in anything she wears!

I don't mean to offend anybody, but honestly, how many of you actually liked Carrie's dress with the bird headpiece?  It was just too much dress, IMO.  I don't care for those over-the-top designer type of dresses.  No wonder Big got back in the Limo!!

It’s fun to think back to how / when I started watching this show.  I did not have HBO (it was expensive!), but my friend I was hanging out with at the time was a few years older than me and made a lot more money than me and she bought Season 2 on VHS (to the time of like $60!).  I want to say shortly after that, I started dating and then moved in with a guy and we got into Sopranos (again late to the game), rented on VHS from Blockbuster but then got HBO around 2001 or 2002 ish???  It was right about the time Curb was up and coming, too.  Man.  Sunday nights were so great for a while there!   Needless to say, at some point I did purchase all of SATC in dvd so I could go back and watch season 1 and the other seasons I missed.   I’ve also read all of CB’s books.

I do still love the early years for the most part. I wish they had kept that not all women want to settle down. Charlotte made the most sense since that was what she wanted.

I hate that I missed the show when it originally aired, but as I said, I didn't have HBO.  With only one TV at that time, trying to watch the series in a house with Mr. Chat and a son wandering about, well, that was a no-go either!  Maybe some day I'll see the unedited versions of the show.  I probably didn't miss much though - a few lines here and there.

For the time being SATC is available on Prime. You would be surprised how much is cut from the edited for TV episodes.

The early episodes had more of the four of them spending time together.  The show was about their interactions with each other and the dating/relationships were the subplots.    That changed and it became more of a continuing story series. Kinda like an R rated soap.

Charlotte definitely wanted the fairy tale ending.  I never completely bought Miranda wanting to settle down. I know having Brady changed her but I still don't think Steve was the right guy for her.

I loved Anthony. Couldn't stand Stanford. I also love Mario Cantone. I remember him being on the View once and talking about someone had plans with him for some summer holiday thing and they cancelled on him to go to SJP's summer holiday thing.  I took that to mean he wasn't invited to SJP's house for the summer holiday thing.  Honestly I would much prefer to hang out with him than her.

I think people who regularly watched the show knew Samantha was more than the notches on her bed post. But for casual viewers and people who only knew how the media portrayed the character they did think she was someone who only cared about sex.

If you have Prime, you can watch all the seasons there.  They have all the HBO series for free (I’m sure that will change when the HBO service launches, but this is where I’ve been watching them).

I have all the DVD’s, but they’re more for decoration now as I don’t think we even have a functioning dvd or blue ray player in this house anymore. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thank you both!  I need to search for shows a little more on Prime.  Between Netflix, Prime & Dish, I get a little overwhelmed with all of the choices, so I tend to stick with my usual channels, but I'll definitely check it out!

Okay, geauxaway, before you throw tomatoes at me (ha ha),  I'm over here in 'Bama, but I wholeheartedly congratulate you guys on the awesome season and the National Title win.  It was well-deserved.  As an SEC fan in general, I can almost always root for another SEC team when it comes to the championship (there are a few exceptions!!)  😉

For all of the grief that I give Carrie here, I do have to admit that there were many times when she was there for her friends.  She was the one Harry called when Charlotte had the miscarriage, and Carrie was over there very quickly to console her; then there was the time she went clear across town so that Miranda wouldn't be alone on New Year's Eve; and she was a good friend to Samantha while she went through breast cancer.   So even though I snark on her a lot, she had some good qualities too!  I don't hate her, it's just easy to pick at some of her flaws.

I remember Darren Star explaining that they shot TV-syndication-friendly versions of various scenes as they went along. It was smart planning. At least that way the episodes aren't butchered in the editing process.

Agreed. Sam had depth to her. A little bit of it was Kim Cattrall, but it wasn't all her - it was there in the writing too. But Sam was the easiest to stereotype and so that persisted in the media and among casual viewers, as you say.

I was just thinking this week about one of Sam's scenes - a friend of mine who lives alone and is quarantining alone (I also live alone, but my best friend insisted I come stay with her) wrote me that this is one of the few times in her life that she wishes she had a permanent mate. It reminded me of that episode where Sam is sick and her curtains are broken, and when Carrie finally goes to visit her (and hey, while it was overdue, at least she went, unlike the others), Sam has a little rant about how she should have gotten married, because at least she'd have curtains that closed. Hee.

For me, it seemed that Carrie was a bit needier than the others, so it's a little easier to pick on her.  Some of her fashion choices left me scratching my head too!   Big was right though, the true loves of her life were her 3 friends, and a guy "was lucky to come in second!" They were all very good to each other and that's what I really like about the show.

Mr. Chat & I have moved several times over the past 30 years, so I've never had that kind of connection with women (Other than work, but that's not the same.  I don't see them outside of work.)  I'm fine with that, so I  think it's cool to watch a show in which the ladies get along with each other, and other than the occasional dust-up, there was never any back stabbing amongst the women.  Their tight bond was good to see.

One of my favorite scenes with Samantha was when she was able to get an appointment for her and the nun with the breast cancer specialist.  There was no way that she was going to leave her hanging out to dry.  Samantha had a good heart.  The second movie did her no favors.  They made her out to be some crazed menopausal woman, and I thought it was a waste of her time.  Yes, menopause can be a bitch, but I thought the way they wrote her scenes was a bit much.   Since she had previously battled breast cancer, wouldn't all that natural estrogen she was taking be ill-advised?  Correct me if I'm wrong on that.   Nothing against Suzanne Somers and her book on menopause, but Samantha should've been talking to her doctor, not taking advice from an actress.

I wasn't a casual viewer but still saw Samantha as a one dimensional cartoonishly horny character.  I wish we could have seen more of THIS Samantha.  But even then, didn't she say something to the nun (before she knew she was a nun) about Mick Jagger & blow jobs?  It was too much IMO.

The second film is why I think Cattrall was justified in her decision to move on from the franchise. It was obvious that they just wanted her there as they needed all the girls for the film. They absolutely ruined Samantha in the second film. Her whole storyline was so embarrassing  and just there for cheap laughs.

To me, Samantha is far from one dimensional so I don't understand that criticism.  Also, like others have said, Kim Cattrall is just so immensely talented.

Other "Samantha moments"

- being the only person Carrie would run to when having an affair, because she knew Samantha wouldn't judge her
- Samantha trying the same sex relationship, and trying to be emotionally intimate with someone
- Samantha falling in love with both James and Richard
- Samantha feeling like Charlotte when faced with a woman even wilder than she is, and then being there for Charlotte when Charlotte wanted to feel like Samantha
- Samantha being great at her job (i.e. when working for Richard)
- Samantha giving Miranda her hair appointment and babysitting Brady
- Samantha being protective towards Carrie when it comes to Big
- Samantha being terrified of death and having no idea how to comfort Miranda after her mother's death, only to have a breakthrough later (Charlotte is so wonderful in this episode, and the juxtaposition between the two is so intelligent.)

These are only the later seasons because I haven't watched the first two recently.

Another thing that I find amusing is the symmetry that Samantha and Miranda seem to share at brunches and lunches because no topic is too taboo for either of them while Carrie and Charlotte often sit there in horror.  Miranda and Samantha have that same "Seen it all", jaded, blase attitude that can be so funny sometimes.  Carrie and Charlotte are the romantics, while Miranda and Samantha are the "Are you kidding me?" realists. And they're both extremely good in their work.  And they both own their own real estate.  They both have a lot of characteristics that 10-20 years before SATC started would often be attributed to male characters, but they are women are they are certainly fully fleshed out at that.  There's a reason why millions of women worldwide firmly believe that they are a Miranda or a Samantha (or both).

Great Samantha moments! I also love her being good at her job with Smith. When he's having doubts she gives the line that 'first the gays, then the girls and then everyone else' which is exactly what happens. Not to mention finding him and deciding she was going to help him because she thought he was so talented.

Good point.  Also, it is cool to see the progression of this 25 year old guy (or whatever his age was) opening Samantha up and teaching her some things about love and romance, while she helped his career.  He used his strengths to help her and she used hers.

Okay, so I checked out SATC on Amazon Prime, and let me just say, I did miss a bunch with having only seen the show in reruns.  Simply put, going with the title of this show, I missed all of the 'Sex', and got just the 'City'!!    All I could find was Season 6, and there was a bit of dialogue that I missed (more than I thought), and obviously the hot and heavy scenes!  😉

It's like filling in the blanks and realizing how much I missed.

Honestly, if you can't find the rest to stream, invest in the DVDs. The syndicated repeats cut TONS. Don't forget, broadcast TV versus HBO? Yeah. Broadcast repeats just are not worth it for all of the slicing and dicing done to make the show acceptable for broadcast standards.

You might have to type in “Sex and the City Season 1” in the search to start at the beginning, but then the rest should pop up in succession.  In my opinion the first 2 seasons had the most nudity and I was shocked at the time, but this was when HBO was becoming a player in original content programming and I hadn’t had any experience with their offerings (as we all have discussed here, for so many years HBO was so expensive and definitely a luxury).  To me it’s just another reason why this show was so one of a kind in it’s time.  There was actual female sex shown in a non pornographic or titillating context.  It was over the top sometimes, but so much of it was realistic.

Yeah honestly I think they all have their positive and negative traits. We've discussed the characters a lot, but I always find everyone's takes so interesting.

I relate to Miranda because she's neither sex nor love obsessed. She tries to enjoy her life all around. She appreciated her friends, career, and success. Even though she's kindhearted, I do think she came across pretty angry and abrasive at times. What I liked about her is she's the friend who'd give it to you straight. Sometimes I want someone to make me feel better, but sometimes I want some brutal honesty. She didn't bullshit her friends, and she'd call them out when they'd try to bullshit her. Cynthia Nixon's acting personally moved me the most.

Samantha was awesome because she didn't succumb to societal pressure to either settle down or that she had to be a certain way because she was a woman and out of college. I don't know if there was another character on a huge show quite like her. Mind you, I'm not sex obsessed the way she was, and at times I felt they took it a little far. I did think it was awesome she lived her life without shame. Women shouldn't be shamed for being sexual beings, and you don't stop being sexual just because you're not young anymore. She was also the friend you'd go to when you messed up, knew it, and didn't want to be judged, just comforted.

Charlotte was generally sweet, more traditional and in general more relatable than the other characters. I relate to her the most for being more soft and feminine. However I found her over the top romanticism cringeworthy at times. I wanted to smack her when she got up and announced Carrie's engagement and how long it took in front of a bunch of strangers. I know she had her moments when she could be mean too, like when she said she was kind of too hot for Harry. Overall she was a good girl and felt bad when she did hurt people's feelings.

Carrie was the trendsetter. I personally found her very charming most of the time. I thought SJP had the cutest little figure and pulled off looks no one else could. The fashionista in me enjoyed the fashion eye candy. Acting wise, I think SJP played Carrie beautifully. I don't think just any actress could have made Carrie as likable as SJP made her. That's not to say I don't see her negative moments. She could absolutely be a narcissistic pain in the butt. The best actress could only do so much. The fact SATC is one of my favorite shows of all time, I'll always have a special place in my heart for both the lead character Carrie Bradshaw and Sarah Jessica Parker.

I love Kyle MacLachlan as an actor, but Trey was a mess. From the character to his mother. They were not only cliche, but as Kyle basically told the writers: "Where do you think this is funny?" You know you see that with shows so much after they have ended and get these behind the scenes talk years later. So many shows have talked about jokes by the writers that the actors have questioned it and I know there was some times on shows like Two and a Half Men or The Middle where they said: "It's funny to us, do your job!"

Those were the two women I most identified. Neither one of them needed a man to define who they were.

While I think a lot of women saw something on SATC and copied it I thought a lot of the clothes Carrie wore was ridiculous. The Heidi look when they had lunch in Central Park?  Yikes.

I envied Charlotte's and Samantha's wardrobes the most.  They both had great professional looks as well as great casual wear.  Miranda had some nice suits but her casual wardrobe wasn't great.

I loved that about Miranda and Samantha.

I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a lot of her looks, but if anyone could have pulled them off, it was Carrie Bradshaw imo.

They did both have awesome wardrobes. I always thought Charlotte York was like a modern Jackie O, a feminine and classy brown-eyed brunette. I also think Samantha's style is underrated. She looked sexy even in her work clothes and just generally looked great. Her style was probably more fun and trendy than Charlotte's, but more classy and consistently beautiful than Carrie's. Miranda could look great, but her style was my least favorite.

Trey was the perfect example of the guy that looks great on paper, handsome and rich, just Charlotte's type, but you want to run once you get to know him.
