I liked the fact that Samantha was unapologetic about her sexual activity.  She was enjoying herself and it was what she wanted to do.  With the other women it seemed like they were either having sex hoping the guy was the one they would end up with or just killing time till they found the one.  Not every woman wants to settle down with someone.

Minus Samantha, for women who were supposedly so wordly & sexually open, they often behaved like they were really inexperienced.  When Miranda was with that guy who licked her butt, she acted like "Oh my, I never heard of such a thing!"  And when that one guy wanted anal sex with Charlotte, they had to pick each other up in a cab to discuss it....and then there was Carrie who was with the peeing politician.  If they didn't like the thought of those acts, just tell the guy no, I'm not into that.  Sure girlfriends would talk about it, but it was almost like they were asking for validation for their own feelings.

The way Carrie was written it seemed ludicrous she would have a sex column.  Dating column maybe.

I wonder if some of the women were late bloomers. I know girls like that who then get a bit wild in their dirty 30’s.

It’s true that the other women had their fair share of sex. Samantha was probably the most consistently sexual though. Carrie was more into romance than Samantha. Once Miranda was a mom, she got so busy she could go for several months without sex. And while Charlotte was no virgin, she also preferred romance  and didn’t like casual sex most of the time.

It really was. Samantha really should have been the one writing the sex column she would have been a better fit. There was a lot that Carrie didn't know that was common enough that a sex columnist should have know. And she was pretty judgmental. She didn't really explore it at all.  A dating column might have been better. I'm not entirely sure all she did was basically write about her friends and herself and she was really bad at dating. Stalking and flipping out. Maybe just a basic column where she could write anything she wanted. Women probably would have still enjoyed reading about Carrie and her friends various dating, trips, and etc.

Carrie’s life was pretty fun-filled. I know a lot of her life was unrealistic, but I like that they showed single women in their 30’s could have a lot of fun with their friends and dating. Some think if you’re not married with kids that you must go home and be alone after work every night. I don’t enjoy dating myself, but the show does inspire me to get out of my comfort zone more. One of the upsides to being single is getting more time for your hobbies, adventures, shamelessly flirting, etc.

As a few others have mentioned, James from the end of Season 1 and the very beginning of Season 2. I actually really enjoyed Sam with James, as Kim Catrall really showcased Sam’s willingness to be vulnerable—the first date ended so sweetly, when James took Sam’s hand and asked her “can I see you again??” and Sam looks at him so lovingly and says “I’d love to.” It wasn’t a race to the bedroom or anything, which was a different kind of relationship start for Samantha. I also love that she felt like she was in love with him before she even slept with him for the first time. And even at the end of Season 2, she blurts out over lunch “I miss James!” 😂😂

It really was. She was so judgmental and annoyingly immature on so many aspects of the sexual spectrum—whether it be her vomit inducing commentary on male bisexuality in “Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl....” or her utter shock at Sam being in a relationship with Maria (culminating with that nauseating convo that Carrie/Miranda/Charlotte have as they’re leaving the restaurant after Sam reveals her and Maria’s romance). Carrie is supposed to be a SEX COLIMNIST IN NEW YORK CITY—one of the wonderful things about NYC is the exposure to so many facets of life that don’t get talked about much in society (but nevertheless exist and always have). Carrie acted like a ditzy 12 year old from small town USA....instead of an actual 30-something sexual connoisseur

I wonder how much of an influence SJP was on that.  I always found her performances to be the weakest out of the four women.  I honestly didn't think Carrie was much different than some of SJP's previous roles.  I just never found her believable as the female version of man about town.

To be fair, though, Sam was so into men that if she were a friend of mine I'd certainly be shocked.  But yeah, that whole "Poof I'm a lesbian" conversation outside the restaurant was stupid.

I haven’t seen her in a ton of things, but I actually did like SJP’s acting. She has a charm that made Carrie more likable than she would have been otherwise imo. The character could be really into herself, irresponsible, entitled, stalked Big, cheated on someone who was good to her with a married man, and didn’t see how wrong a lot of her behavior was. I think a lot of people still loved Carrie because of Sarah Jessica.

I do think the strongest actress was probably Cynthia Nixon. At least she moved me the most on the show. She made me cry the episode she lost her mom. I felt sorry for all the girls during their hard times, but I don’t recall tearing up any other instance. Miranda could be bitchy, but Cynthia played her with a lot of heart.

While there are some things we might not be familiar with, I would say its more you heard about it but it was always other people doing it. Now its you and you aren't sure if you can handle it or if you would like it.

And yes, Charlotte wanted romance with her sex.

I agree with that.  Cynthia Nixon was the best actress.   She always cracks me up when she is eating some sweet and calls Carrie and leaves her a message that says she will be in Betty Crocker rehab.

I rewatched the first movie, and I forgot how good it was.

Samantha did annoy me that instead of being touched Smith was thoughtful and generous enough to gift her the ring she wanted, she was annoyed she wasn’t able to get it for herself. She truly was meant to be single.

I also watched it recently.  While I understood Samantha's reasoning I didn't like how she handled it. But yeah she was meant to be single. I only wish the writers wouldn't have recycled the "I love me more" line.

That's my problem with it. I really don't mind Samantha realizing she was meant to be single. It is nice to see a woman realize and having her realize that while involved with a really nice guy? Its just so rare. Samantha and Carrie both really seem like the type to be single. But I hated the way they handled it. She seemed more like she wanted to bed her neighbor and annoyed that Smith bought her something she really wanted. Even her constantly flying off to NYC didn't work because she was an agent. Agents who live in LA are constantly flying off to NYC and other places to work on deals for their client. There's no way Smith wouldn't be going to NYC to attend several events for promotion and publicity. It just doesn't make sense as a reason.

Top Ten Reasons Carrie was the Worst

They forgot that time Carrie demanded Samantha show up to go to a party with her after Sam had the facial peel that made her look horrible.  When Sam who warned Carrie she looked terrible and was clearly embarrassed about people seeing her that way shows up, Carrie proceeds to treat Sam like crap and tries to avoid standing near her.  She shows no sensitivity at all to how Samantha is feeling.

Extremely narcissistic. Especially being that was the same season Carrie dragged Sam cross-country on a horrible train trip so that she could shag Big, and then freaked out about having a pimple the whole trip 🙄🙄. Sam never once chided her for the pimple or her insecurity over it

that Top 10 Countdown of Reasons Carrie was the worst was terrific. One they missed though was Carrie blabbing to Aidan about Miranda’s decision to terminate her pregnancy. That was a HUGE betrayal, and should’ve been addressed by Miranda. Then Carrie has the nerve to heavily imply (through her facial reactions/expressions), while out having pizza with Miranda, that Miranda should have the baby just because Carrie herself and Steve would want her to. That is NOT what you do to someone who is agonizing over what to do about an unplanned pregnancy. Your opinions/thoughts/feelings DON’T MATTER....it’s up to that individual woman to decide for herself. That whole debacle was one of the biggest betrayals of basic trust Carrie displayed throughout the series for my money (which is saying a LOT)

Ugh, HATED when she practically dragged Samantha out of the bathtub in the middle of her relaxing bath to go to the "smaller room" she booked so she could bang Big in that room.  Apparently all Carrie needed was a bed, why didn't SHE use the small room?

Yeah, but, this was 20 years ago, and Miranda and Charlotte NEVER presented themselves as being "so sexually experienced".  (Maaaaaaaybe Miranda?  She just always seemed so non-judgemental towards Samantha, so that's what I think I'm thinking of.) Carrie was the sex columnist, so I absolutely take your point.  But Miranda and Charlotte were just being themselves.  I don't think it's weird.  If a guy wanted to pee on me I'd say no thanks too, which is exactly what Carrie did, after some hesitation on how to let him down.  I also don't see what's wrong with looking to your girlfriends for validation for their own feelings.  That's bonding with women and realizing your own feelings can be normal, etc.

Berger had an attitude because Carrie said a NYC woman wouldn’t be caught out on the town wearing a scrunchie.

I disagree, that's not what the fight is about.  Berger worked hard on a book and released it, and Carrie found fault with it.  Carrie thought she was being lighthearted and joking, but to Berger, she was critiquing his work, his baby.  I totally get it.  That's very hard to get over in the span of 1 night.  As he said, what is he supposed to do now, go back in time and rewrite it?  The book was done, and he was already an insecure writer.  The issue is not "The scrunchie".  The issue is critiquing his hard work and creativity.  Many writers only write 1 great novel, and that was his.

Yeah Charlotte was no virgin, just a romantic who wasn’t sex obsessed. She was really only a goody two shoes in comparison to someone like Samantha. Charlotte hooked up with the groomsman she didn’t know at a wedding, and she also had her lady bits painted. In my circle, she’d probably BE the wild one.

I definitely have the same opinion, (ETA) and there is no way Charlotte as she was always portrayed would speak like she did to her sorority sisters.  It's actually why Charlotte is my least favorite character (on the show, oddly I liked her a lot in the 1st movie), I thought she was a phony.

It is my opinion as well, but I still enjoyed the character. Despite the flaws and inconsistencies, she was generally kind and more traditional than the others. Carrie was too narcissistic for my taste, Miranda could be harsh, and Samantha, while fun to watch, was much too outrageous for me to relate to.

I enjoyed the character too. I really liked that there was one character who was generally kind and more traditional. She really wanted the marriage and kids. I really liked that they had that they each had different interests, views and wants when it came to men. Samantha wanted sex, lots of men and to be outrageous and fun. Charlotte wanted love, marriage and kids, and Miranda was hard, harsh and well until her surprise pregnancy didn't want kids, and Carrie in the first season exploring the different types of sex and relationships she was happy to have fuck buddies, friends with a guy who videotaped the models he slept with and still thinking about wanting love. Charlotte was fake because she was so hung up on the WASP lifestyle she wanted, snagging the perfect WASP guy, using "rules", and chasing the "perfect" image. It was great to see her change, and realize that wasn't the life she wanted. It was great to see that she had to change in order to get the guy when she once broke up with a guy over his taste in dishes or her deciding to lie in the future to her kids on how their father Trey proposed to her because it hadn't gone as "perfect" as she expected. Her reaction at first when her 2nd wedding goes badly but deciding to agree the worse the wedding the better the marriage and her and Harry joking they got to 50 years.  I do wish she changed more in the second movie she's still wanting the "perfect" baking image with her daughters wearing white while she bakes instead of just enjoying baking with her daughters. I do wish she accepted more responsibility for the break up of her 1st marriage.

I do wonder if the writers knew how awful Carrie became or did they just think she was a character that viewers would overlook her flaws.  When I originally watched the show she didn't annoy me that much but rewatching it (which I have done several times) her flaws are so much more noticeable when you watch all the episodes in a short amount of time and also when you know upcoming plots.

I've wondered that too. Given how Carrie gets worse every season. I can't decided if its the writers or that SJP got more control over the writing and her character or both. Carrie is the only character that never learns anything from anything she's done, doesn't change or get better and gets so much more screen time.

In the recent book Sex and the City and us the author wrote that SJP only came back for season two if she could be a producer.  And it has been said on here that SJP did interviews and said while playing Carrie she hoped her portrayal would lead to romantic comedies which of course never happened.  She was in a couple movies that were supposed to be romantic but not really.  Out of the four actresses she is my least favorite. Whenever I see an interview with her I always get the vibe she is playing SJP and not being herself.

Yeah Charlotte learned that all she really wanted was to be happy. She let go of the image of perfection where the husband looks a certain way, and they’re a traditional family. She was happy to change for Harry. They adopted a baby girl when she thought she’d never be able to have one naturally. A lot of her life didn’t go the way she imagined it, but she ultimately got the family and love she so desperately desired.

Regarding SJP, I enjoy the actress personally. I think she gave Carrie a charm. With the exception of Kim Cattrall (who I also enjoy), I don’t think I’ve heard any negativity about SJP either.

I’m rewatching the first season now, and Skipper is such a classic Nice Guy I could puke. He practically stalks Miranda, and it’s played off as him being a hopeless romantic instead of a creep with boundary issues. So many times I wanted Miranda to yell at him. Although for the life of me, I cannot understand why the show made such a big deal about their age difference, when he’s established to be 27, and Miranda is either 32 or 33.

People always make a bigger deal when the woman is slightly older. A man has to be dating someone decades younger for there to be an issue.

Yup that’s what I was think as well. Season 1 was definitely a different tone in terms of writing than the subsequent seasons. Even Charlotte was adventurous sexually—the affair with the Hasidic folk artist, posing nude for the older artist she studied in college (which was retconned in later seasons when they had Charlotte say that she never looked at her vagina before 🙄🙄), etc. You can tell when SJP became Exec Producer, because Carrie became a judgmental prude who shrieked....and someone whom you would NEVER think would be a sex columnist
