S11.E05: Big Surprises

When someone is too fluid, that is what you would expect from someone primarily trained in ballet.  Think of typical cheerleaders in high school.  They don't want those soft curvy lines with their arms when cheering, they want someone more s****** with a snap and power and clean lines.  Hip hop would give people some experience in that.

The fan vote seems pointless these days. Maybe years back, the vote was based on who fans actually liked. Now, it seems to be a contest of whose friends and family can run the best social media campaign.

The only fan-vote winner to make the team, so far, has been Loren (the one with the brunette "hair shock"). Vivian was the first, Loren 2nd, Colby 3rd and Jackie the 4th. So far, fan-vote seems to be the kiss-of-death for those who made it in solely on the fan vote (Colby & Jackie). Vivian & Loren would have made TC without the FV. I wish there was a more objective way to do the FV so it doesn't end up the winner is the one who can get more people to vote. Like, a way to rank their technique.  Hey, maybe they could do Kelli's infamous Yes/No/Maybe buttons on each fan vote video? (See how I tied that in there? LOL)

Agree with all of the above and wanted to add what the eff is up with Kelli's hair this season???   It looks so fried, dried, ratty, terrible.  She usually has a nice color job and keeps it smooth and shiny for the most part.

I really enjoyed this episode, even if I could have done without the country star visit. Loved seeing Kyndall and Jessika together--very sweet. Nice that they're showing us more of the relationships among the ladies this year--Holly and Allie, Heathers and Maggie, Kyndall and J--and doing a better job introducing us to TCCs. I still want to "meet" Khalyn and Tess. Very glad this is not the Maddie Returns show, but I'm also glad to see that she's doing so well. I love her attitude. 

That was Bess who tripped on the runway.

Loved seeing Sasha! As stunning and charming as ever. 

I don't think K & J were being unfair about  Kelsey  or Yuko. In seasons past, we've seen them give tons of time--sometimes all 8 weeks of training camp--to girls who are struggling with their dancing. Karissa and Alex come to mind right away.  Kelli said this episode that they're not sold on Yuko, but I don't see why it's favoritism to give her time to develop their style and adjust to learning 50 dances taught in a foreign language. I've seen glimmers of her getting the choreography, style, and projection down. As for Kelsey, I think the things she's been called out for are fair, even if the delivery hasn't been kind. (I'm not defending the delivery of some of the critiques.)  To me, her bombed interviews (total lack of football knowledge or preparation to represent the organization) + marking moves (not giving 100%) = reasonable concern about the effort Kelsey was putting into being a DCC. They demand 110% of their rookie and veteran candidates at all times, so I don't see why they wouldn't expect it of Kelsey. I thought she handled herself well, though, in her apology, and I think that Kelli is right: it's time for Kelsey to deliver. If it only had been that one moment in the studio, that would have been unfair and unkind, but Judy said explicitly that Kelsey has looked like she's not going all out when performing multiple dances in the studio. Going all out isn't just about effort, though, and I think that Kelsey's issue may be more tied to needing to build performance confidence and the boldness to "leave it all out there on the floor." That hesitation to be DCC-bold has kept a number of good candidates off the team, as it the diminishes the level of performance power that folks expect of DCC, and that their stage demands. Either way, Kelsey needs to step it up. Despite what someone else suggested, I highly doubt that Jerry Jones wrote a memo insisting that the gorgeous girl who didn't know he was the manager be put on the team.  She has to make it on her own. She's beautiful, composed, and a lovely dancer, and is winning me over. But I'm not totally sold on her yet. 

The drum line choreography is killer, and I hope that they keep incorporating Denise and Michelle choreographies into the repertoire. Wish they'd shown Jacie demonstrate that dance. I miss watching her, and loved seeing her and her fly natural hair twice this episode!

So...just watched again because I love me some tricks and the Neecie choreography.

weight issues - Megan looked fine. Melissa, Jenn and Danielle not so much. Melissa definitely killed the tricks - she's the best at them, even better than Holly and Erica. Maybe Megan is the closest. 

Is it me or has the Jenn K love fest either dwindled or nearly gone. They barely show her now. I'm not mad. I liked her, but like others more. 

Yuko is so likeable but really not keeping up or great technically. 

They don't want Kelsey, Amy or Emily there. It's pretty obvious. Kelsey gets the most grief though. Who was it that wasn't great on the runway and Keli looked like she couldn't contain her glee.

Tasha is more likeable than I want her to be. She's really good at the Neecie choreography and does seem humble. I still don't think she's the drop dead most beautiful one there and I hate her troweled on contouring, but she's warming to me.

Kyndall - I don't get why they keep bringing her back. She is not a powerful dancer, her hair looked a crispy mess with bad highlights (I blame the DCC stylist for that one, and I seriously dont think she's very pretty (sharp nose and thin lips, with that hair, are on the verge of witchy). However, it is cruel of them to drag her back and toy with her.

the split second of Holly doing a twirl in that white Golden Girls Belk dress was so draggerifficly campy I loved it. 

Retired girls at Belk - Jordan C may be sweet but still comes off not to sharp. That voice is grating too. Sasha and Tia looked great, but Tia sounded like she was lying through her teeth exaggerating about her selling job. I think she does some sort of pyramid scheme vitamin and was making it sound really fancy - or trying too. 

Ok I liked Kelli's black and white tent dress.

She didn't really irritate me last year but she does a little this year and I can't quite put my finger on it either. Maybe the "if it doesn't happen this year, the dream is over" said in a quavery, wistful voice got me. When I think of a good TCC that was cut who came back and really nailed it, I think of Sunni Cranfill. She said "I have to give them a reason to give me a second chance." Very reasonable and she did it. With Kyndall, I feel like they gave her another chance because they liked her. Not because she had really much improved.

I also don't have any sympathy for someone who was 'released ' from a job for doing DCC stuff on work time. Employers pay you to work, not pursue your dreams. Find an accommodating job or don't pursue extracurricular activities.

Celinda was the "stomper" on the runway. She didn't like Amy A's quick exit.

I think Kelli is struggling to rework her style for her new figure.  Sometimes she nails it, but I agree that this season has been more misses than hits.  As for the sleeveless issue, I feel folks on the unflattering critique, but, having just returned to the South after many years away, I can imagine that she's just like, it's hot as hell here and I can't stand the thought of even a cap sleeve.  Maybe I'm projecting, because that's what goes through my mind when I contemplated hiding my less-than-toned arms this summer, and where I live isn't as hot as Dallas.  It's like 100+ there on the regular. ♨️

On the sleeves subject, Holly really worked her white cape dress, but I think that's a much too mature style for a teenager.  That girl can werk anything, though. 

I want them to cut Emily already.  I just can't get past her dancing. She has performance presence, but not the technique, or real dancer's awareness.   I will say that, to me, her best quality appears to be her sweetness. She's been the first one to reach every TCC when they come out of the dreaded office meetings, and immediately offers support, whether they've been cut or not.  Still, I'm not feeling her as a DCC, and I never have.

But that's the whole point of the fan vote--to capitalize on people who have extensive social networks to promote the team and the show. If a finalist is a great dancer with tons of personality chances are she'll make camp anyway.

I really liked this episode! I thought it may have been the best one this season. I do feel like the crew has put in some extra effort this season than past ones, which is refreshing. 

My opinions:

-Judy really does always look great, and whatever she has or has not done is working for her very well. She looks so healthy. 

-Kelly looks unwell. It doesn't have to do with any one particular thing, just overall. She looks like she needs to take a sabbatical and rest and take care of her self. She looks fried and frazzled. It shows in her attitude, too. She is very pretty and always will be, but she seems like she is not into it anymore, in the same way she used to be.

- I am not a Kyndall fan and I don't see her appeal. She may be good for filler, but she will never be a stand out. I am not a fan of the hair. I think she should straighten it and color is, maybe lighter. 

- Didn't care that Jackie left. She was a non-factor

-The part with the boots was so so so fake! I mean, really? Casey had a pair just in their sizes and then they surprise! Had one for her, too? I thought it was such filler and although I watched it, in the future if I rewatch I will fast forward it. Casey seemed sedated in a way, with her speech. It was so flat and lifeless. She could never pass the interview! 

-Kelli and Judy are being very mean to Kelsey and seem to be picking on her in an uncalled for and vicious manner that is making me think there has to be a back story. The whole marking it comment was completely bogus. I have seen them ask people many times to show them something in front of the group and they mark it. They do not like her for some reason. I agree with someone else that Kelli was overridden and told that Kelsey would be on the team, whether she likes it or not. Kelli is revealing a nasty side of herself. It is unbecoming. She should read that JAckie Kennedy book she made Megan F. Read and take her own advice! My feeling, with no real data, is that Kelli may be jealous of her in some way. 

-My jaw dropped when they showed the vets doing that dance for Casey. They were all so overweight! THere is no way that they are not called out but Hannah was???? They looked huge in my opinion. All of them in that dance, and Danielle,too. I really hate to see the double standard. I remember Kelli said "Hannah needs to be taken out of appearances with her unform until she can fit into her uniform" and was so mean. Hannah did not deserve that treatment, especially if these girls are getting a pass. I didn't like that dance, either. It looked thrown together last minute. 

-Hoping that we see some Kitty C next week. 

-Love that Melissa R is not on the show as much. It is better without her fluff segments. Although, they did add the fluff back in with the boots part. 

-Sasha Agent was my favorite. Very happy to see her!! She was just an awesome dancer. There is a YouTube video of her doing her finals routine and I watch it all the time. It is to a Chris Brown song, and she nailed it. She had that pop and control. 

-I may be the only one who thinks this, but even though I love the DCC, I find their look and dances extremely dated. I cannot stand Thunderstruck, and I don't think that any of the girls find that music inspiring or easy to get into it. I think they need way more of a modern touch.I know they will not change the "iconic" uniform, but why not have some alternatives? I just don't see it as appealing as they do, but I am not from that part of the country. It may just be a Texas thing? I feel like Kelli and Judy are not flexible with allowing change in the dance, look, and uniform department. Some of the dances that the guest choreographers design should be used on the field! I have always wondered if they don't use it because Judy is intimidated by it, since she is much older.

-They need to show us more dancing!

-Glad they did not focus on Cassie during the runway show like last time 

-Kelli is definitely the queen and if you don't share her sentiments, she will cut your head off. Her face when Casey said she wasn't sold on Yuko?? Or, her looks during the runway show? WHen that girl tripped? It is making me uncomfortable at this point--- it has gone from brutal honesty to mean spiritied and hurtful.

They're moves always look 10 years out of date. Even in those media clips of the early 90s, those were early 80s moves. 

I do think Michelle keys and Neecie noodle are bringing in some fresher moves - and Stephanie dibiase - but yes, everything else looks so outdated.

Kacey Musgraves was clearly only there for cross-promotion. No other reason why she'd waste her time being there. She helps DCCMTT gain viewers and DCCMTT helps her market her boot line.

Same with Kellie Pickler. Only there to pimp her TV show.

Your response made me laugh out loud! I can validate Tia's career...we both work at the JCPenney corporate office. She's in marketing, I believe for women's apparel. She's just as awesome as she appears :) 

Not that Belk's is a major competitor, but it can be regionally for certain categories, so I can see why they didn't want to go into specifics during a Belk fashion show.

It's interesting because I bet Kelli spends way more $$ and attention on her style and clothes than Judy and yet Judy manages to look more "put together" and effortless.  I'm not a fan of that bright / bold pink at Judy's age but she does look effortless and nice.  I think Kelli also needs to let go of her memories as a size 2 hot to trot young woman.  Her dresses are way too tight (I should know as I'm busting out of my dress today lol ... sigh, damn you 15lb weight gain!  It makes a difference!).  Having clothes that actually fit and are cut to your body shape and size is 85% of the battle!

I'm sure they do this on makeover day, but I'd love to see some insight on makeup lessons/ do's and dont's. We've had a fair few makeup no no's and for the love of all things holy, stop putting dark eyeshadow on everyone!

I so agree!  She dresses too young for her age.  Kelli needs to either get a sophisticated stylist or change her body.  But I still think women of a certain should not wear over-the-knee dresses.  If Kelli wants to show her legs, she could have worn capri length leggings under the tent dress.  It’s all about proportion.

Re: Kelli and the sleeves: personally I can attest to it being insanely hot here in FL and I live in tank tops nearly year-round because I just cannot deal with another layer of clothing!! It's not just the heat, it's the humidity that kills you and Dallas is pretty much the same climate-wise. But I would imagine the studio has a/c and you could work a little cardi or something in there..but outdoors, hell no. ???

I am just amazed at this scene.  At the end, Kelli told her to believe that everyone is on her side.  

It's not like she dances like Holly P.  I don't like the vibe this season has so far.  To me, it seems like there are a lot of undercurrents happening behind the scenes.

I would have thought the same thing from only ever seeing her on tv,  but seeing her in person she is not large at all.  No where near a size 12...

I would have assumed Kelli was somewhere in the 8-10 range. I have a hard time believing she is a 4-6? Judy seems like she is probably around a 4 and Kelli is definitely bigger than her. I do not think Kelli is overweight, but my sister is tiny and she wears a size 4. Anyway, I obviously have not seen Kelli in person but that is just my impression based on how she looks next to Judy and the cheerleaders.

I'd be shocked if Kelli is less than an 8. I was thinking more like a 10, maybe a 12. She's about average height and has a thinner frame, but she isn't Kim Kardashian petite with extra weight that would make her look huge at a size 4. Kelli's boobs alone would push her up a few sizes.

It's so hard to tell. We had tickets to be in Oprah's audience a few years before she closed the show, in her slimmer days, and she was only about an 8-10. She's tall, and looks so much rounder on TV, but seriously in person, was curvy but not that big. I would've pegged her at a 14-16 at the time, from TV. I'm 5'9" and she was almost as tall as me.

I would have pegged Kelli as a size 14-ish as well.  I'm assuming she's taller cause it looks like she is - and for her age and being taller, there is nothing at all wrong with that size IMO.  In my mind if you are 35+ years old and are 5'4"+ as long as you don't have to go to s plus size store, you are doing okay ;)...especially if you've had kids.

I go back to the comparison thing though when people quote these small sizes - if Kelli is a size 4-6, what the heck is Judy and all the DCC/TCCs on the snow?  They are all CLEARLY much smaller than her.  They can't all be 00's cause there's even some size variation amoung the young girls - like I can see Jenna and Yuko as a 00'sc but some of those girls are a lot wider and bigger than her - ex. Amy T.

good point ... that would mean Judy was a 0-2 if Kelli is a 4-6 so the other girls must all be 00-0? That seems really small!  Sigh - either way, I would just love to fit into my dresses again (without gasping for breath!)

Christina Hendricks from Mad Men is a 14. I don't think Kelli looks much smaller than her. These girls, even the 'heavier' ones, must be teeny in person.

She doesn't look remotely overweight to me, just think some of the dresses she wears don't flatter her exactly.

ETA: I feel bad for saying anything. Kelli is gorgeous & I hope to look half as good as she does at her age.

It's funny, I always figured she was that small. 4-6 small. A 12-14 would show up like Kate freaking Smith on the screen. The camera is just not kind sometimes. I don't really feel bad discussing her weight (which I see nothing wrong with, BTW) since she's made bank discussing others' weight in far less flattering tones.

I'm laughing out loud at your Kate Smith comment. I wondered if any of the current cheerleaders even know who she is. But since I'm old.... :)

Judy is likely a 0.  She is tiny.  But very attractive at the same time.  She is more photogenic on camera.

I wear a size 14 and my mom wears a 8-10 and Kelli is smaller than her by a good bit -- thus my assessment.  And shorter than both of us.   I am a pretty good judge of sizes.  Sometimes people surprise me if they are busty or hippy and dress more flattering.  She had on jeans that night and was definitely small.  

I have also seen some of the cheerleaders at Palm Beach Tan where I go for spray tan in Valley Ranch and also Las Colinas and they are teeny tiny.  (The desk staff pointed them out to me - I wouldn't have recognized them). Much smaller than Kelli and maybe similar sized to Judy.  More junior sized than missy sized.

No way is Kelli a 4-6, her bust is way too large to be in that small a size.
