First of all, I am so happy that I found this place!  I love Judge Judy and have been watching for years.  I live in Canada but get the show twice daily on a Buffalo, NY station where the commercials are pretty much all for lawyers and tax/bankruptcy specialists.   I will be back when I have shows to comment on but hello everyone!

FYI, she also airs on CityTV so you can watch it on a Canadian station if you really wanted to. :) I used to have my PVR set to record her from the Boston station my network carries, but it seemed like she would get interrupted and/or replaced by The View every other week, so I switched to City.

City's commercials still have a lot of lawyers, and the mandatory walkin tubs and hurry-cane commercials that the US networks carry, along with some Gold selling and Fast cash loan places. :)

Wasn't there a case involving litigants from Canada years ago?

I don't think there's ever been a fully Canadian case (our laws are different enough but binding arbitration should bypass that), but there have been a lot of Canadian Litigants throuhg the years.

The most famous one I can recall was the Nurse from Windsor who worked in a hospital in Detroit and got her car towed. She had all her paperwork in place and all her ducks in a row and gave JJ enough ammo to call the tow truck driver on his scammy methods.

Today, another poor little innocent pitbull mix that had a bad raccoon day and needed to take it out on yapping chihuahuas to the tune of $7000.  It was the fault of the mean aggressive raccoon.  He started everything.  The plaintiffs should have sued the raccoon.

Can I ask a question about how the show works as I have often wondered.  The parties agree to dismiss their actual cases and appear on the show where the ruling will stand.  Who pays the award if any?  Does the losing party get any money?  Who pays for them to appear and travel/stay in LA for taping?

Link to comment

The show pays to fly people in, pays for their hotel, pays them a small stipend for their stay (for food and such) and then pays the judgment if there is any. If the losing party isn't awarded any money, they don't get anything other than the stipend.  The winner gets their judgment paid for by the show, which is why they are willing to come on TV and most times humiliate themselves.

There's some sort of misconception online that they split $5000. Not sure where that started.  $5000 is just the maximum a person can sue for, $5000 isn't given out in every case. Otherwise there'd be a lot more scammers on the show.

Canadian RN car caper is one case I remember, but wasn't there another one with teenagers or 20 somethings?

I think the $5000 split idea came from the Wapner-era People's Court.

ETA, some Internet friends from Europe watch JJ and are completely aghast at the cases because they say those cases would never make it to court in their countries.

Yes Milz, there was the case of the Canadian Pool Hall Beatdown Girls.  They were from Vancouver.  In fact, I don't think there were any American litigants in that case.  I don't remember the specifics, but the title tells enough.

Do they have the equivalent of small claims court there?  Most of this crap wouldn't make it to our regular courts either -- or at least I hope.

Damn you Georges Lucas and your Star Wars copyright!  I really wanted to see what the two mom-basement dwellers were fighting over.  Helmets!  Mold-making supplies!  Such precious memorabilia left in a car port?  At another mom-basement dweller's?  Oh, the agony of not having more to snark at.  Someone pass my salts.

goodogcarl, I don't know if they have small claims or equivalents of them in their countries.  But they certainly are entertained by Judge Judy (and the other court shows).

In a way, I miss Judge Joe Brown because his litigants were the most slimy, most unsavory, most ignorant people in the world.

Just watch Judge Mathis. He's still got his share of awful people.

Amen. I love that she says the things that need saying, but nobody else will say for fear of being crucified for being un-PC.

I watch the cops shows and JJ to make myself grateful for my simple, plodding life. I don't know if you'll believe this, but I have NEVER taken out an order of protection on anyone.  That seems to be the first order of business for these people. They must be exhausted at all of these protection orders and calling the police for the tiniest thing.  It exhausts me just hearing about it.

OK so I'm sorry that couple lost their baby, but come on, they were infuriatingly entitled and transparent in their attempts to guilt trip everyone into freebies like it was their due.  In the hallterview, she bemoaned how there are special circumstances where rules ought to be broken (entitled much?) and society putting money above everything else.

Erm, if you're going to preach that money should not be important, let the DJ keep the deposit!  It's just money, right?  Maybe he has bills to pay?

Good on JJ for ferreting out how they strung the DJ along for a long time before paying only 10 days before the wedding and didn't sign the contract.

Well -  I have taken out an order of protection against somebody in the past and I'm always shocked at how easy it is for some of these yahoos on JJ to get one. I actually had the lady at the place where I filled one out explaining how to describe what happened in more detail so it would go through (this was something legit with a serious escalating threat of physical violence, not something like "oh they looked at me funny"). And it was pretty horrifying to sit there with the other person staring me down. I'll never forget how they lady sitting next to me was telling me how a guy that had fixed her car found out where she lived and started stalking her until he broke into her house and she called the cops. The guy came into the courtroom in shackles and was whacked out of his mind. Perhaps these people live in a smaller town where there's not much for the courthouse to do.

Thank you!! - And all the detail they had to give about the miscarriage, like that was supposed to make some kind of difference???  Duh???

They sure had the victim act down. Yes, it was really awful, but awful things happen to everyone. They were very lucky the other vendors didn't do the same thing. Instead of being grateful they only lost one deposit, they decide to sue.  They seemed like professional scammers to me.

I ended up in the hospital for a month last year unexpectedly. I had a couple of bills that I ended up having to pay late fees on & an NSF fee with the bank. I guess I should have sued someone.

Celebrating Opposite Day on JJ!

We have room mates that actually mitigated their damages when one of them ditched the lease, and got awarded their rightful share!  JJ even said: "good work!"

What is JJ-land coming to?

Then we had a bulldog owner that attacked a smaller dog... that appeared genuinely mortified in the hallterview!  And instead of the usual excuses, she brought a credible witness that attested the bulldog was tied up, and the smaller dogs were loose.  I believed her, and so did JJ.  The small dog owner was pretty shifty about which dogs were tied, and the supposedly broken extendable leash as if the bulldog had chewed it off.  She wanted to leave doubt the the bulldog might have been untied but she tripped on her own shoelaces when the said the bulldog was tied after the attack.  She wouldn't explain it with "the bulldog must have been attached the whole time."  So due to her negligence, her dog has no jaw.  She should have put it out of its misery.

Link to comment

Would JJ faint if she ever stopped for gas in NJ and discovered that the pumps are attended and the price is still below the national average?

People like the owner of the little yapper who got its jaw destroyed make things so much more expensive for all of us.  Her dog got hurt and it haaaaaaad to be someone else's fault and someone else should be made to pay.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Total scammers.

When the Defendant was announced in court, I wasn't looking at the screen and thought his name was Fasaad Fartshittian. I knew it couldn't possibly be, but every time they'd cut to him, I'd giggle.

Man, I think I spend too much time alone.

And irony alert: In the hallterview, the Scamtress, who just sued a man, says with a straight face, "Maybe one day he'll learn the world doesn't revolve around money." I cannot wait to send Wells Fargo my mortgage payment in paper clips and glitter.

.And her speech was so stilted:  "I envisioned the dog"--seriously?  Not everything bad that happens to you is a payday.

The case with the Bulldog was a good one. My BS detector was seriously out of whack, (attribute it to being a poodle owner), but,  I thought the bulldog owners were the shifty ones-at first. I guess I like to think I live in a world where people take responsibility for their actions. I feel badly for the dog though, hope she was lying about the dog's jaw missing- probably just a tooth. The JJ episodes that involve dogs are really my favorites-JJ loves dogs. I get all misty when I watch "Baby Boy", the one where the guy's poodle was stolen from his Mom's backyard and sold. When they bought the dog into the courtroom and he saw his real owner-it gets me every time.

I don't know if I have a favorite JJ type of case, but I love a good smackdown of someone who is deserving. I know she is often quick to judgment, and sometimes I get frustrated when she doesn't seem interested in hearing a case. However, when she gets a litigant who has gotten over on the system for way too long and calls them out on it I love it.

I'm not talking about people who are legitimately unable to work. I'm talking about people who've just decided out of sheer laziness they'd rather sit on their butts and let the rest of us support them.

Like JJ, my least favorite type of case is the cell phone case. Seriously, people need to stop putting every Tom, Dick, and Harry they know on their cell phone plans. I saw a commercial in which Sprint was advertising that you can now add up to 10 lines and have the bills go to 10 separate places! I think JJ is going to be seeing a lot more cell phone cases with that type of crap going on.

Then I must spend too much time alone too. In fact I'm just laughing thinking about it now.

I have no idea why the cell phone people don't just buy the cheapo cell phones. There are ton of companies (think Metro PCS but there are a bunch more) where you can pay a flat fee and get a decent phone and just pay monthly without a contract. Maybe it's because they have no intention to pay. And unfortunately many moons ago I had somebody on my cell phone plan that overused the phone and I ended up with a $500 bill before I was able to get it cancelled. I ended up paying off the bill (sued the other person and won but they never paid the judgement which is another reason why people go on court shows) and that damn bill was on my credit for SEVEN YEARS (even paid off). It really wrecks your credit. There's no damn way I would put anybody on my cell plan EVER.

Same thing with car registrations/ insurance/ etc. If you can't get insurance or get the registration in your name, there's a reason. I think of JJ and Judge Milian as educators - maybe if a few people learn how dangerous and costly it is to just "put the car in your name" is, they won't do it.

Kelly BlueBooks update either every three or six months. Bert would be better served using KBB on line.

I'm waiting for the day when JJ asks for the Blue Book value, and Byrd pulls out a tablet from under his crosswords and looks it up on KBB instead. :)

I did a stint as a customer service rep for a major Cell company last year and let me tell you, it was call after call of these people who are on other people's plans and the bills can't get paid.  (that and data overages in the hundred$)   There are companies out there now where you can get current phones with no contracts and usually bad credit, it's the majors that suck people in.

Kangaroo Executor:  The nerve of the slack-tongue, mouth-breathing brother suing his brother-in-law for an inherited car that legally and justly now belongs to him, for the whole amount of $9000, while living rent-free in the house, an unsold asset from the estate 1/3 of which should have been given to the now dead sibling, become part of her estate, and also been transferred to the brother-in-law that was being sued!

He got the sweetest deal, the brother-in-law got the raw deal, and he's the idiot suing???  Unbelievable.

I wouldn't surprised if he hoarded that house to the rafters and he's living with raccoons.

Ugh. I can't remember the last time I hated a litigant as much as I did this bloated, shorts-wearing, sweaty asshole. You're squatting in that house for free, you slack-jawed puke. Buy your own 9 year old car!

I thought it was bad when we saw the first woman who took out a loan to buy an essential motorcycle for her useless boyfriend, that is until we saw the pathetic girl who hooked up with some creep on FB and immediately started raining money and credit car purchases on him. After all, I'm sure he really needed a big screen TV to start his "business". Ah, ain't love grand? How is this even possible? Don't any of these foolish, desparate fools ever watch JJ?

The brothers were repulsive.  And dumb once that car was in the sisters name they had no claim to it. They already screwed she and her husband out of enough money.

I didn't see the Angiuan weed my rerun was of the cousin who loaned who her cousin her housing money from college and then some other equally as boring case.

One of my all time favorites! I tear up just thinking about that huge, mountain of a man absolutely melting when that little ball of fluff ran over to him. With the bonus of a rare, genuine awwww! smile that it elicited from JJ.

I didn't think much about it one way or the other until the hallterview when she identified herself as a single mother and testily informed us that "I even had to get a JOB to pay those bills!" She should just count herself lucky that she didn't mention that in the courtroom when she was begging JJ for mercy. Edited by Sile

Don't mess with the Antiguian weed! It's wicked!

I really liked this defendant! He was very precise in his defense and I believed every word he said. I do think that the Antiguian weed was what caused all the problems.

I'm so jealous you got that rerun! That case is hysterical. His imitation of her on Antiguian weed was fantastic.

The children of the 2nd least creative parents in terms of baby names (after George Foreman): Shawn, Shawntae, and Shawanda Foster. Shawntae (the plaintiff) used the fewest possible facial muscles when speaking, total marble mouth. And of course was a health care provider, yet another incentive to stay healthy.

The second case, with the ever popular school refund money, featured the most disturbing shade of people lipstick on the plaintiff!

Bingo!  He's probably disabled too--JJ's favorite kind of litigant.

I handled this exact case as an attorney!  I represented the executor sister.  Hoarder disabled brother was living in house with aged mother.  Third sibling, a brother, lived elsewhere.  This happens a lot.

After mom died, it took us two years to get brother out of the house and sell it, even though it was in foreclosure from a reverse mortgage company.  He would rather have had the free place to live than his share of the small remaining equity, because as an SSI recipient he can't take the cash outright.  Forget getting rent from him--he thought the other siblings should pay all his utilities because he was keeping the house up for the real estate brokers that he wouldn't let in.  Very sad family dynamic.

As for today's case, I got such joy when JJ laughed as soon as she heard fat brother was living in the house.  It seemed like plaintiff thought he was going to cut sister's estate out of its share.  I'm glad that ploy was aired on national TV.

I don't think JJ would be able to do that Paternity Court show------of the handful of episodes I've watched of that, JJ's head would explode in 2 seconds.

Dear Sweaty, Gape-mouthed Brother:

I have an idea how you could not sweat so much. It's called diet and exercise. Problem solved.

I feared Plaintiff Brother was going to keel over and die during testimony. Poor guy. Gets hauled into court with an oxygen hook up and barely even had to say a word.

And I'm pretty sure that wills can't contain instructions like, "If X dies, then the money goes to Y."
