That's not a Jason's Deli box.

Sure looks like the box my club royale came in.  I also take great pleasure in believing Derdick put on a suit and carried a briefcase to have a sack lunch at school.

I love how the recipe calls for 3 sweet potatoes and serves 3. There are no measurements given for the olive oil, salt or pepper so why does it have to be 3? Can it be adapted to serve 2? or 4?

Wait--where does she state how many it serves? I would actually be impressed if she did this, since most of the time it seems she can't be bothered with such petty details.

From the birds and bees book (I guess Jill can’t type “sex”):

“It’s never too early to begin giving your child a practical understanding of his or her unique, beautiful body and why God designed it to be exactly the way it is.”

deep breath.......

Heh, Jill's never even had a locker assignment what with Homefoolin' and all that.

I didn't realize one could get lockers at university. Is that a commuter thing at some schools? I just graduated from a doctoral program and we didn't have lockers.

Ooh but Jill DID have a school locker!  In  TTH playroom, JB set up a whole wall of school lockers he bought at auction. In a family utube, Michelle gives some reporter a house tour and pointed them out.  The kids can stash their own private hord of candy in them.

Did she peel those potatoes? They don't look peeled, and her recipe doesn't say. I usually peel sweet potatoes or at least scrub with a stiff brush because the skin is thick and uneven. Most recipes bother to mention this kind of prep detail.

Still, the melted spatula next to the food is a brilliant touch.

I love white potato skins but, to me , sweet potato skins are tough and very bitter.  Not peeling them ruins the whole carmelized taste of roasted sweet potatoes.  Either Jill is lazy, or she doesn't mind that bitter taste.

Also 3 potatoes can be three tiny ones or 3 football sized ones.

I always peel cut-up sweet potatoes for the reasons you mention. However, I bake them in the washed and scrubbed skin and then scoop out the delicious insides. Yum. Now I'm hungry.

Re: how he's paying for law school, has it already been speculated that he may have inherited some $$ from the death of his father? A life insurance policy or something from the police force?

At least currently, life insurance is optional at the Fayetteville PD.  Is that the town where Derick's father worked?

Aww, Muffin found an age-appropriate book where she can learn all the things about sex that she doesn't already know.  As Dorothy said, "possum is brain food".  And reading is fundamental!

Derick will get one pass from me on one thing, and that is losing his dad.  You can never prepare yourself for losing a parent, and I think he sort of lost part of himself when his dad passed away.  In his case, it just took a little while for it to show. Next week is not going to be kind to Jill.  My hope is she can at least keep her shit together.

There's one in every class:  the guy nobody wants to sit next to.

Perhaps they can smell the pit stains on his undershirt?

D take note, most of the other guys for orientation are in polos or nice t-shirts.

Re Lockers: the Community college I went to at one time had 1/2 lockers on a first come, first serve basis.  1/2 means there was a top locker and a bottom locker - definitely bigger than what Derick showed.  I would get there before my first class of the semester and slap my padlock on one first thing.  Since I was majoring in Biology, between heavy classes and labs and the fact our cafeteria had microwaves that you could use if you brought in your own food, I just shoved a ton of books for the day, lunch, extra water bottles, coat, umbrella, you name it, along with clothes for my part time job, so I could change there and go straight to work.

My University I attended didn't have lockers that I remember but they were expecting most students were living on campus.

Goddammit Zella!  You made me spit San Pellegrino all over my desk! Thanks for the best laugh I had all week.  I keep picturing your step-douche dad opening his laptop to one of these.

Haha You know, I don't remember exactly what it was, but that's about right! I just remember being 8 or 9 and him talking proudly about what he did and thinking "WHAT?!?!"

I do get the purpose in teaching young kids both stranger danger and the difference between appropriate touching and not appropriate touching.  I'm wondering if Jill isn't promoting these books because of her own experience with her brother molester and, although Jill wouldn't realize she was doing it, throwing shade at her parents.  If these girls had been taught what was ok and not ok - you know in the real world sense, not in some crazy Duggar world of don't kiss before marriage, then perhaps 5 girls wouldn't have gone through a horrific experience.

Although, I'm guessing these books don't discuss masterbation and if they do it's just ebil.  sigh.

Anybody know who is taking these photos? Derick's looking at the camera.

I went to the U of A a few years ago in a different department for grad school. There was usually someone from the departmental office who about once a year would take pictures of classes (with the professor's permission) and orientation, etc, for the website. Seems like the law school is a bit more diligent about it than my department was. Then again my department was full of socially awkward and eccentric people, so we had to psych ourselves up for it and a lot of professors and instructors would opt out.  I imagine the law school is less shy!

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure we had food from that same deli during my orientation.

I cannot figure out for the life of me where his locker is on campus. I sure didn't get a locker there and don't remember anyone else having one!

The odd thing is that evangelical Christians are the first to opt their kids out of sex education at school.

I’m seriously struggling to understand why they feel the need for sex ed with their 3 year old.    This family’s obsession with sex is getting way outta control.

They're absolutely obsessed with sex, and often in a very creepy way. That said, I think simple, matter-of fact books about the human body are appropriate and a good idea, even as young as age 3. I'm sure this particular book is filled with bible propaganda, but it's not a bad concept for kids to learn the real names of their body parts and their rights to their own body at a young age.

I don't recall the Bible mentioning transgender people.

Eve, being made from Adam's rib, would have had all the same chromosomes as Adam, making her a transgender woman. So the bible would technically be pro-trans, if they acknowledged the science of it.

It sucks that Izzy is being educated in such a bigoted, restrictive way, but I'm not at all surprised,

I know it has been mentioned that maybe he wants to work somewhere such as FRC or similar like Josh did because that salary was a ton better than his Walmart salary and in his mind he is godly enough and perfect BUT, I don't think he is the face they are looking for as a rep for their org.  Not his PHYSICAL face (HA!) but I would think they would want someone a bit more polished and diplomatic to be their spokesperson than someone who picks fights with minors for sport.  Josh is a gross loser but even he didn't pick fights on twitter with other TLC people.

Good point. Josh was hired because he was a member of a famous Fundie TV family AND because he could be trusted to smile on cue, stick to the talking points his handlers gave him and otherwise keep his trap shut. He was the very definition of a "useful idiot". If it hadn't been for his sordid past coming back to haunt him (and if he'd been able to keep his fly zipped), he'd probably still be there. The boys at FRC might privately agree with every word Derick tweets, but their goal is to position themselves as the respectable face of a hateful movement. They're not going to risk giving a platform to a loose cannon like Derick, especially after they were burned by his brother-in-law.

Also someone needs to ask God, if wants every baby to have a mommy and daddy, why does he let people die when their kids are still little, and sometimes unborn, leaving young widows/widowers with kids? Amazing how the 'kids need a mother & father' argument comes up when it's about gay parents, or evil single mothers who sleep around, but is glossed over when it's through death.

I think their thing is that accidents and illness are not choices but homosexuality (according to them) is. That's where free will comes in. So they rationalize (if one can call it that) that those other deaths are "God's will" and "we can't understand God's way" and such, but emphasize that people do have control over their life choices and whether to sin or not. Based on this, I don't think this is a conflict in their minds.

I've copied the top of the recipe post below. I assume the "3" after Recipes is the servings, especially since it calls for 3 sweet potatoes.

Samuel’s First Haircut!

Aug 18, 2018 | Family Blog, Photos | 0

Samuel just had his first haircut! He seemed to enjoy the feel of the clippers and with daddy and big brother helping hold him while momma cut and distracted him with a video, it ended up being a success!

Anyone have stories about their child’s first haircut? Tips? Tricks? Comment below!

are "God's will" and "we can't understand God's way" and such

What I don't get is if there are some things that they don't understand why God chose to do, how can they be so sure on other things?

How if (for an example) "God works in mysterious ways" in allowing a godly, married with small children, woman die from breast cancer ... how can they also turn around on the same breath and argue that they're without a doubt sure that "God wants every child to have a mommy and daddy" (as opposed to two mommies or two daddies)?

Her IG post was  "Want to teach your kids about the birds and the bees before someone else does, but you don't know where to start?  Someone in our small group told us about these books and we love them!"

Questions - Who is she concerned about speaking to Izzy about the birds and the bees?    What kind of messed up people are they running with?  Why would she be having this conversation him anyway?   He's a boy and I thought only men could speak to their male children about these things in Fundyland?

I was floored to see a bag of spuds just plopped on the floor for anyone to trip over.  Who does that?!

And baby Sammy did not need a haircut nor did he need to be made into a little man.  Michelle always kept her little boys, toddlers included in 1950's short haircuts.  I'm sure it's to emphasize their traditional, godly values.

I'm so happy Jessa lets Spurgeoun have longish curls.

'Cuz it says so in the Bible? Arrogant cherry-picking? You got me. I'm not Christian let alone a fundamentalist, nor am I a psychologist. I would guess at this point they are so heavily invested in their way of life that they will trip over themselves to justify it, although a theologian might have answers that are more sensible (or might not).

Maybe Jeremy can answer these questions for us in a few years ?

Cutting hair in the kitchen? Little hairs flying around and landing on surfaces your food will be on? That doesn't make me want to gag AT ALL.

Doesn't bother me. Someone who maintains a clean kitchen will clear up any stray hairs - and won't have food sitting out during the haircut for any hair to land in anyway. Sure, Jill and Derick don't strike me as clean freaks, but since I won't be invited over to eat any of her homemade glop, it's not really an issue in real life.

The advantage of the kitchen as the place for haircuts in many homes: it's the biggest room with hard flooring (vs. carpeting), and thus much easier to clean the cut hair off the floor, which is where almost all of it will end up.

I think it's kind of funny that Israel and Sam have short, short hair even though Derick seems to prefer to have longer hair, while Spurgeon and Henry get to keep their curls while Ben's hair is always short.

Sam must be an extremely easy going baby. None of mine would EVER sit still like that while I was buzzing their hair, especially when a sibling was randomly hugging and kissing them.

I don’t think Sammy needed a haircut at all. What is it with the fundy at home haircuts? Jill, why don't you actually learn how to give a decent cut?  We’ve seen your work on Derrick - he looks like a dork. Please don’t do the same to your children.

Also, if you want to cut simeone’s hair, please start with your own. It looks dead.

In keeping with the fundy briefs Jill holds so dearly, why don't they celebrate Derrick’s dad’s birthday in heaven? It seems it would be more appropriate than celebrating his “earthday birthday”.

Jill wants tips for haircutting???? Try cutting your childrens' hair OUTSIDE like I did. We cut our sons' hair outdoors so hairs would not be all over the kitchen. Jill has dishes drying on the counter...hair can get in/on those and not be seen. Yuck.

Also, dear Jill, those potatoes are a stubbint one's toe or trip hazard on the floor. Once again, hair from the homemade haircuts can get in the potato bag since it has holes...should I continue with 'tips'?

I cannot imagine Derrick having a lot of friends or people he’s feels comfortable with in class

I went to a Baptist law school (well the undergrad was, the law school was basically a bunch sinners!  We had 120 in our class including Jewish people, atheists, divorced classmates, black kids, Asian kids, and *gasp* 2 gay guys and a lesbian.  We also had an amateur porn star who did admittedly get kicked out before orientation finished but that was because she was watching her film in class, on her laptop, with 3 rows of students behind her ..sigh...

Even the most conservative classmates who went to Bob Jones and Liberty undergrad, were 100% loving and accepting of everyone.  There was no judgment, heck one of those guys became an ordained preached and married one of our gay classmates :).

Derrick thinks he has some platform now. He is being called to preach...me thinks it won’t go so well....Plus that first year was hard as hell and I was single, lived about 2/10ths of a mile from the school, and had no distractions like a spouse, kids, a twitter account to maintain and preach from...
