How baby #2 is handled will determine that. She got pregnant again too fast, and if she delivers her VBAC on a dirt floor in CA, she'll be, like, totally, self assured.

Dirt floor?  That place they're living in looks nicer than a lot of homes/condos/apartments I've seen in the US! I don't see any dirt floors in her future.

"Jill is failing at motherhood even worse than Michelle. To her credit, wasn't Michelle something like five or six kids deep before she had her laundry room breakdown? Jill can't even handle one, and Izzy seems like a relatively calm baby."

Wow, but this really does seem to be the case. Spot-on observation, bitter. Jill, who has essentially been in training to care for babies and young children nearly all her life, has apparently not picked things up well at all. She can't manage to do - for her own child - what she did for her siblings, at least in part. Good grief, Ma & Pa - what do you two have to say for yourselves now?

I wonder whether it's more this or more that Jill's using Izzy as her excuse to run away from doing everything else.

I expect there's some of both at play. But my guess would be that the fear of actually having to show progress in learning Spanish, going to a real language class with real people, going out in the community in a foreign country and so on would be much bigger problems for her than dealing with Izzy. So a good way to avoid those things is to have Izzy crawl all over her Spanish tutor, who's then too busy and distracted to make Jill participate in an hour-long focused Spanish lesson, and a great way to avoid having to go to a class full of strangers is to claim that she really needs to stay home with her son to be a good mom. Etc.

I mean, we haven't really seen Jill have a breakdown. What we've seen is her backing out of doing thing after thing after thing, repeatedly using Izzy as an excuse.

She's just not prepared for life, period. And that has to come as a big shock to any Duggar kid, since they've been constantly told by their parents and by the whole Gothard apparatus that they're far better prepared than anyone else. And Jill definitely quaffed all that Kool Ade containing the "we're the Duggars -- we're world beaters because of our brilliant upbringing" flavoring.

I sometimes wonder whether this isn't part of what happened to Josh, too. Like Jill, he seemed to buy fully into the "I'm a Duggar so I'm really capable" idea. But then when it came to running car lots and working at a lobby, it turned out that he had no skills whatsoever, compared with other people. So why not wallow in porn? He wouldn't be the first person who's fallen headlong into a vice partly out of despair of his life having much other meaning.

I can see Jill being a Peggy Hill kind of Spanish speaker. Mangling the language and mispronouncing every word but considering herself an expert.

Oh, you're bursting my tiny bubble of belief -- or hope, I guess -- that maybe Jill is beginning to dial back some of her outsized confidence as she crashes a bit on the rocks of the real world. ... Unfortunately, the picture of her as Peggy Hill really does resonate.

Perhaps Jill assumed, based on observing Michelle, that once she got married she would pop out kids to hand off to her sisters (until her own were old enough to be buddies) and then spend all of her time hanging out with her husband and accepting mother of the year awards. I'd like to think that Jesus is rolling his eyes at Jill.

I thinks it's equally likely she internalized Michelle's lifestyle - babies are for birthing and maternal attention, while someone else does the shit work after the first 6 months. She may want to just hand out with Derick and screw; she's been a mother to children long enough. This is not an eithre/or situation, we may both be right.

Jill may well be wishing to hand off Izzy (moving to another country wasn't a good idea in that case, of course). But I'm skeptical of the cause being the married-Duggar-girls-will-love-to-screw idea, once the honeymoon period is over and aside from obligatory screwing to produce more blessings. Maybe I'm underestimating them, but I can't see Jill, Jessa, Ben or Derick actually figuring out the female orgasm. And maybe I'm crazy, but I have a hard time seeing how sex without finishing could continue to be attractive as time went by.

ETA: I think that, most likely, all these different possible misconceptions are working in Jill's mind. And what they boil down to is that the life that she saw very precisely modeled by her parents and the "preparation" they always claimed they were giving her for life are exactly what most people here think they are -- complete hogwash with no connection to reality.

And now Jill's struggling with finding that out. No way can she live like Michelle (even though that was supposedly the ironclad Gothard model of how life should be and what the Duggar girls were being brought up to) and no way can she do work and learn things and live in foreign countries without tremendous struggle (even though she was constantly told that her upbringing was making her one of the most competent people on earth.)  Nothing she thought she knew turns out to fit with how her life is working. So obviously she's going to want that fantasy she was fed. That's quite a bind. And there's no obvious escape from it except to revise every opinion she swallowed in the TTH. I have a hard time seeing Jill doing that, but I don't see what her alternative is, either.

I agree with Joan and Marge (edited b/c Churchie's post snuck in between). The problem with this set-up is that Jill was too young herself to also internalize what life was life before her mother started handing off babies to her sisters and her to raise. If Joe was a baby when Mechelle had her laundry room breakdown, Jill would have only been 4. And we know that Mechelle started handing out kids like something from a Pez dispenser around the time Jana was 6, which wouldn't have been long after this infamous incident.

It's so sad that Jill never had proper mothering modeled for her, but there you go. I guess we really can't be surprised that she seems to be almost clueless now, and as all of you have noted, not only about motherhood, but about every other aspect of life that the vast majority of people take for granted (like simple human interactions).

At least Derick is still able to go out into the real world and function in a relaxed academic environment, so he's not quite dead yet! However, I don't give him long before he too is completely sucked into the Duggar Black Hole of interdependence.

You ladies all hit the nail on the head. Jilly Muffin can't possibly learn Spanish at the same rate as Derrick because Izzy. She won't be able to be a Mid-Wife cuz Izzy. She won't be able to proselytize because Izzy. It certainly can't be because she was isolated her whole life, while being lied to about her talents and about real life itself. It's because she has to take care of her own kid. Poor, poor Jilly Muffin. What will her excuse be once she has daughter-moms, especially when no one knows who she is, and there will be no Mom of the Year awards?

All snark aside, I feel a wee bit sorry that her bubble is being burst. A wee bit.

For all the talk about how Michelle is an absentee mother, she has more skills that bubble to the surface from time to time and give a hint of who she really is when she isn't being watched by the hawk at the TTH.  She is constantly held up as the bad girl by JB in her normal life pre-slavery.  Even after marriage she didn't have kids for a couple of years, then had them one after another, with no money because JB used it for a political campaign.  She was slave and beggar and sex toy for JB.  Yet once in a while, away from the house we find her water skiing and ice skating.  There is something there, or was, that JB didn't kill yet.

Cheerleader has great sense of innate balance, physical coordination and core strength, despite blatherings about "missing back muscle". :)  My uncle was an all-rounder athlete when he was younger, and can do just about anything in that arena, including ride a horse despite never having had a lesson.

I expect that, to some extent at least, she knows full well what she deprived her children of and enjoys the thought of it. Having enjoyed those things when they can't makes her superior to them and also is a power she holds over them. I do think that Jim Bob is the worse of the two selfish power mongers in the household. But I have a feeling that depriving her kids of stuff she herself clearly still thinks is fun provides her with a little thrill of power and control that may partly compensate her for whatever grievances she's accumulated through life. She's clearly a person nearly -- or wholly -- devoid of empathy, it seems to me. So the kids' struggles? Well, Jesus is testing them, just like he's tested Michelle. She can live with it. And she raised them right.

First off, Derrick's pink umbrella was just perfection, no?

I laughed at Jill's comment about the tutor not charging extra to come to the house because I felt like she set it up for the sake of the donors...like see, I'm being responsible with your money.

The entire tutoring session was a joke and that lady looked so annoyed. Poor woman, at least she's getting paid. I can't imagine why she thinks she can learn Spanish with an hour session every so often (what maybe 2-3 times a week at most) when she could step outside and learn so much more. It's sad really, but Derrick looked way too happy walking away from their apartment.

Derrick said they would be away for 8 months, I don't understand why they sold their car? Eight months isn't a long time and if they come back due to unforeseen circumstances how is Derrick going to get to job interviews?

And we learned that Bin is dumper than the first episode. Did anyone see his family at the shower?

Link to comment

Seriously....how much would it cost for Jill and Derrick to hire a local girl or woman to watch Izzy for a few hours a week while Jill learns Spanish?

Guess what Jill and Derrick, the vast majority of us with kids PAY for childcare while we work and/or go to school. Shocking, I know. But most of us don't have an army of free babysitters in our families (and would never expect them to essentially nanny our kids for free) and we don't bring our kids to work/school with us and expect the women there to help us with our kids.

I believe Derrick said they were going to be in language training for a month and then be assigned a mission.  This was filmed before Jessa's due date and they are still "learning", so I guess just listening to others speak Spanish for a day wasn't enough for Jill to master it?  Huh.... Go figure..

How does she expect anyone to take her seriously when she approaches just about everything like it was a lark, an impulse decision, or the flighty musings of an extremely immature teenager ? She took money - serious money - from trusting people who thought she was going to another county to be a missionary, and all she's doing, apparently, is flitting around like a tourist and paying other women to babysit her own child. While she's THERE.

If Jill worked at a bank and was handling/ignoring your mortgage application with a fussy toddler on her lap who was drooling all over your paperwork wouldn't you be angry ? Because that's basically what she, and Derick, are doing.

Worse yet, she's not paying the woman to babysit. She's paying the woman to teach her Spanish, then expecting her to babysit and barely paying attention to her lessons.

Given that the Duggar kids *allegedly* took Spanish from Mrs. Jackson for years, Jill should at least have basic conversational ability. The only words I heard her utter were "si" and "gracias." Every time someone talked to her in Spanish, she would talk to Derick in English. I known people lean towards giving the Duggar kids the benefit of the doubt, but I am 100% convinced Jill is just dumb as a doorknob.

I would have genuine respect for both of them if they admitted that they'd made a HUGE mistake, threw in the towel, returned whatever money is left, and just came the hell back home. Preferably with their tails between their legs. They're certainly not the first people to have made a bad decision that was leading to failure - I've had my own brushes with less-than-success, to be sure - but carrying on this farce, this charade, that they're actually doing anything beyond filming The Real Fundie World: Guatemala, is just a slap the face.

The jig is up, Dillards. Just go home.

I agree and disagree. I agree that they should give up the fake 'missionary' thing and admit to their mistake (fraud?).  But I absolutely, emphatically think that them going back to the Duggars would be terrible.  The Duggars are emotionally abusive and controlling, the Dillards should stay as far away as humanly possible. I would have respect for them if Derick learnt Spanish fluently (let's face it, Jill's probably a lost cause), got some kind of financial white collar job in a city, they got involved as PARISHONERS in a nice church, and basically lived an expat lifestlye that they fund themselves.

Wow, am I ever getting more and more pissed off at Jill as this story unfolds...

Her "job", paid for by charitable donations, is to minister to the people of Guatemala, which she can't do without learning Spanish, but she's taking her lessons as lightly as she possibly can. It's almost like a joke at this point - Ha, ha, Me-o learn Spanish-o, Si ! Si ?

How does she expect anyone to take her seriously when she approaches just about everything like it was a lark, an impulse decision, or the flighty musings of an extremely immature teenager ? They took the money, haven't made any inroads toward even basic competence in the language, have spent 40% of their mission time on vacation in the States, and think that a good use of their time (and other peoples' money) is to bond over avocados with a native while speaking English for the overwhelming majority of the visit. Cultural immersion, my ass.

I would have genuine respect for both of them if they admitted that they'd made a HUGE mistake, threw in the towel, returned whatever money is left, and just came the hell back home. Preferably with their tails between their legs. The jig is up, Dillards. Just go home.

My guess is that Jill is completely overwhelmed by the reality of learning a foreign language and getting along in a foreign country as a responsible adult with only one other known adult as company. She's really hardly ever learned anything before, and she's never even gone to the grocery store without being accompanied, let alone done something joblike or interacted socially with strangers, without having her entire family right around her.

And it looks like Derick is so excited to be national boundaries away from the TTH (and who can blame him) that he can't even think about anything else. He's just jumping for joy right now that he's hundreds of miles from the 24/7 breathing-down-your-neck of DuggarWorld.

I think Derick does have some seriousness in him -- and an interest in having a life fitting for an actual, you know, adult -- and will eventually try to figure this out. But I don't know what he'll do, since I'm still sure that he never bargained on being saddled with someone like Jill, who's completely out of her depth in anything like real-world adult situations but is actually too uninformed and underdeveloped to fully realize that or to be able to do something about it. Really, she'll need to go through about 50 skipped steps of education and psychological maturation if she's ever to manage anything besides living in a house near her parents, chasing down her husband for lunch every day, and having her siblings over for mutual babysitting sessions.

It's a mess. That's for sure.

They really should have called these shows: Why You Should Never Ever Marry a Duggar.

At this point, I find them exasperating but I also feel sorry for them.

I think Derick was probably a kind of shy little dweeb who fell for the Duggar fantasy hook line and sinker and thereby got himself into this ill-advised marriage. Ironic that the Duggs advertise their women as real helpmeets, when Derick is finding that as a 21st century man you can't get any help out of one of them at all.

And Jill is just utterly unequipped for adult life. She was allowed to have a few little approved dreams -- missions and ministry, midwifery -- but she was simultaneously deprived of any of the tools she'd need to realize even those fully Gothard-approved goals let alone anything else. At the same time, she was told daily that she was being brilliantly prepared for those things.

It's all very well to say Hey, she's an adult, time to pull herself up by her bootstraps. But in real life, almost nobody actually manages that bootstrap thing, especially when they've been subjected to delusion and intellectual and emotional deprivation. It's a lot easier said than done (about a billion times easier, in my opinion) for people to set about on their own to overcome all the lacks of their upbringing and accomplish it to any degree, especially when they've had the kind of upbringing that deliberately blinds them to their being any lacks in it at all. Can't really see Jill managing it, especially if they remain so closely tied to Duggarville, where the brainwashing continues.

You are right. I was surprised when Jill actually corrected herself at that lady Lydia's house. She first said Thank you, then must have realized she was being taped & changed it to Gracias.

What was the big deal about Izzy having avocado as his first food? Aren't babies his age (Jill said he was 6 months at the time) starting to eat (baby) food or at least given a taste of something? Was it being a spur of the moment "neat" idea that made it newsworthy? Or that it was a native food? Couldn't quite figure that out.

Their apartment is really nice including the outside area with what looked like well taken care of playground equipment. I like how Derick said they wouldn't always be living with these types of amenities. Right.

Avocado actually is a great early food for babies, a good consistency if it's ripe enough, and contains lots of healthy fat. My daughter used to eat it mashed up with banana when she was a few months older than Izzy. I can see where that would be a really "out there" idea for a Duggar, though (far cry from canned peas), so Jill probably thought she was doing something exotic.

Avocado is a nut, hopefully Izzy is not allergic.

To avoid dragging this off topic, I've actually heard avocado allergy is more closely linked to mango and latex. Not sure what the correlation is between them.

My son is allergic to nuts, and he could eat his weight in avocados. Similarly, coconut is not a tree nut despite the name.

Ahem...back to Izzy-I think avocado is a great early food, my son loved it when we gave it to him, it was one of the few solids we knew he would happily eat.

Has Jill just been solely breast feeding Izzy so far? Hard to believe she hasn't tried some other food like rice cereal yet.

Yea avocado is related to mango and latex. But you don't always get the allergies to all of them (fingers crossed).

I believe it's classified as a berry.  It's in the same plant family as cinnamon.

After some googling, right you are. I've heard it called a nut, not a fruit for many, many years. Maybe it's been reclassified. I was just cringing at the thought of giving a baby a potential nut - given how children can have terrible allergies to them I'm sure Izzy is OK.

I feel like the answer is, that Jill and Derick were discussing it because you're supposed to discuss introducing solid foods, and you want to make sure the kid's not allergic and/or coordinate and remember what he's eaten.  Jill just made it sound mysterious with her oblique elocutions.

Bingo. She's terrified. She has no idea how to interact one on one with an adult non-relative, and on top of that she isn't really sure she's capable of learning Spanish. So she brings Israel to the lesson, wide awake and raring to go, to sabotage the entire endeavor. Then she can tell herself (and everyone else) that it was just too hard to manage with a baby.

If she doesn't really try, she can't really fail.

When I saw the avocado scene, I worried about fresh produce in a country where the water may not be potable to newcomers. An avocado, like a banana, may be OK because it's peeled, but a small child has a weak immune system, so I would be very careful. Jill Dillard doesn't come across as very smart or careful unfortunately.

My concern about introducing avocado as a first food was its consistency. For a child who has only been breastfeed, avocado is kind of sticky. Back in the day, when we introduced solid food we would usually mixed it with formula or water until the baby got used to swallowing differently.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME ?!?!?!

I would SO love to side hug you right now.

The best part of all this? The leghumpers watching and shaking their heads sadly (I'm guessing) while Jilly Muffin bemoans her lot in life. Poor Jilly Muffin. No sister wives to watch over Izzy so she can make sure Triple D doesn't have enough time alone to visit the men's room unobserved, let alone take a deep breath. Imagine the "ministry" to mothers all over this country whose feet hit the floor before daylight, hold a full-time outside the home job and come home to many other responsibilities that must be dealt with before they can fall into bed for a few hours sleep -- and do it all again tomorrow.

Does it dawn on any of them that they have NOTHING in common with Jilly Muffin, let alone the fact they do more for their families in a day than she accomplishes in a week?

Jim Bob once commented that he never left the house alone, that he would even take a few little ones with him to avoid being unchaperoned. Do you all think Jill panics at the thought of Derrick being defrauded as he strolls through the streets without an accountability partner? If he checks out a woman's boobs or ass is he cheating on her? Is Derrick allowed to have a female tutor?

Oy the questions ...
