Re the clock in her hospital room - that was when she was *in* her own room. The first several hours would have been in the ER, which there was no footage of; even though they were admitting her, it takes a bit (sometimes a LONG bit) to get a room and be moved. 🙂

Women should certainly be allowed to breastfeed anytime and anywhere, within reason. And if it needs to be in a parade and on a float that's fine. But maybe sit down and feed your baby safely and in a way that is loving and sweet. Modest Michelle did not need to remain standing in the middle of a float. To me it looked unsafe and also looked cold and removed.

And when I say within reason, there are times when breastfeeding is really not the wisest choice, IMO. Like in an important meeting, while sitting in the dentist's chair, in (or on) a moving vehicle, or during a planned presentation to school children, etc.

I breastfed my children and because I was very modest about it, I planned accordingly. I would feed them early if I had an obligation or try and plan an appointment during a normal nap time, I'd have back-up breast milk in a bottle, etc. I also paid attention to my children while nursing as I did when they drank from a bottle because for me it wasn't just about nourishment.

Most babies are introduced to baby foods by six months and have moved beyond on-demand feeding. It really isn't hard to be modest while nursing if modesty is a thing for you.

I find it curious why a family who thinks knees and clavicles can "stir up desires that can't righteously be fulfilled" don't give a second thought to the possibility of accidentally exposing their breasts while feeding their child.

I don't mind moms breastfeeding in public. My only concern with Michelle standing on that moving float is what if she lost her balance and fell. What would have happened to Jordyn?  I know it didn't happen, but "what if."

Okay, I went back several pages and didn't see this info, but, was wondering why they REALLY have the at home natural births. Is it for TLC?  I know the explanation given, but, I don't buy it.   So, after her challenging birthing history, isn't Jessa considered high risk and under strong recommendation to only birth in medical setting?  It's like she really doesn't mind flirting with danger.  I just don't get it.  Or, am I overreacting?

I don’t think that you are overreacting. I do not believe that home births for her are going to be a safe option. Does a Duggar girl have to die before they realize that hospitals are the safest option?

Jill sounds like she's a teenager. 

I think she just went to the TTH to walk the stairs. It was one of her things to help speed up the process. Ones her contractions got closer or stronger she said they went back home.

I know a lot of fundie families.....I grew up in it, but, I'm not aware of any who are home birth supporters. (Not that there is anything wrong with that, under the right circumstances.) Maybe, it's regional.

I agree it is dumb, but they're not in a rural area. They're minutes away from several hospitals.

I grew up IFB also.

I notice this is a trend that is picking up in popularity in general. I believe the idea behind it is that birth is a normal, natural and healthy thing that has been made turned into a medical emergency by doctors (who are not Christian and don't acknowledge God's sovereignty).

Anna’s reasoning for the toilet birth was that her OBGYN was out of town and I think the backup was a MAN. Can’t have that! I personally think they are sick for putting the baby in danger. Forget me, that baby is going to be born in the safest way possible! Bring in ALL the men! 

I do think that Jessa seems like a very good mom. I love that her boys seem very laid back and sweet, and she compliments them on that. Plus they have hair longer than a buzzcut past the age of ONE. They’re practically women by Michelle’s standards!

Jessa does take nice pictures of her kids. I have similar pictures of the ones above when my kids were little. Taken minutes before the oldest started to push the baby off because he was "all done". Not in a mean or malicious way, babies are just kind of boring and noisy to their toddler siblings. 

Jill would probably post a picture of the baby being pushed away because she's clueless to all the judgement out there. 

If you talk to a lot of parents who have 3 or more children they'll likely tell you three children was the hardest adjustment. Jessa posts a sweet picture but behind the scenes she likely having a hard time adjusting and probably has Jordyn and Jana helping her in addition to Ben.

What Jessa (wisely) chooses not to post would likely paint a different picture than the one she's selling.

It also appears that Spurgie is still in diapers. Jessa had mean-girl posted a while back she's an expert in potty training and knows when kids are ready. Guess she misread the cues with Spurge.

It could be a nighttime pull-up/diaper. My older son daytime potty trained easily, but it took much longer for his brain/body to be able to stay dry overnight.

Yes, they are and that is what happened.  It was pretty big news, I'm surprised you didn't hear.  There's more info including a partial 911 call and IG posts from various grandchildren in the thread for other Duggars.

I just watched the birth episode yesterday (I DVR'd it).  I agree with everyone here who doesn't buy the story that her midwife left town so she had to scrap the plan to have the baby at the birthing center.  With all those months to plan, wouldn't you have a back-up?

So her water breaks in the morning, she is wearing the red dress.  Goes to the big house to get some exercise stair-climbing in, still in the red dress.  Comes home and gives birth ON THE COUCH, still in the red dress. Goes to the hospital, and then comes back home, STILL in the red dress.  Wouldn't you think someone would have brought her a change of clothes? That dress must have been pretty nasty by then.  

And why the couch?  Why not on the bed?  It's not like there wasn't time to move to the bedroom.

I had to laugh at both little boys climbing onto her hospital bed to see the baby and both picking their noses.

Probably not on the bed because Jessa pretty much put the mattress on the floor.  The midwife would have had to be flat on the floor trying to help Jessa deliver.

It may be.  Here in the Midwest, there are quite a few fundie homebirthers.  They tend to be from the same couple of churches, it seems like the word gets out amongst the congregations.  They also tend to patronize self-taught 'midwives' who are members of their churches.

I always wondered about why filming births counted as "modest". There's a film crew in there & we know the attendant cannot possibly have the mom completely covered all the time. So guess it's okay to have the vag exposed as long as it's currently in use as a baby passage. 🙄

While I was having my naturally (cough!) blonde hair blonded  today, I had a thought possibly brought on my peroxide fumes)...

I had wondered why Jessa gave birth on the living room sofa instead of in her bed as she had with her other children when I remembered that she redecorated the bedroom and their bed is just a mattress on the floor. A mattress on the floor is not too conducive to birthing a baby. 

That is all and my hair looks great.

If Jessa and the Duggar girls plan on having more home births, I don't know why the have not invested in a birthing stool.  They should be able to find one at an antique store for a decent price.   I remember my grandmother had one.  I don't know how she ended up with it or what happened to it after we put her into assisted living.   I imagine that one of my great grandmothers must have used it back in the day.  They both lived in a small coal mining town in Pennsylvania where the closest hospital was 20ish miles away.  So home births would gave been the norm for them.

along those lines - I surprised the duggars have not converted or built somewhere a birthing suite, with all of the bells and whistles...Jessa going over to the big house just to walk the stairs , was a little weird to me ... I was thinking what if she went into active labor right there , given that this is her 3rd child..

Maybe this can be Grandma Duggar's old bedroom...

Probably not a need to rush out for a birthing stool. The Duggar daughters (not counting daughters-in-law here) are batting only .500 in the actual home births completed vs. total home births attempted. If you count home births in which the delivery occurred at home and wasn't followed by a 911 call to take mother to hospital: it's exactly *one* such birth out of six attempts. (That was Henry, Jessa's second.) The status so far:

Jill's 1st (Izzy): as documented by TLC, a long labor followed by an unplanned/emergency (at least "urgent" if not technically a medical emergency) C-section at a hospital.

Jessa's 1st (Spurgeon): baby delivered at home, followed by 911 call and trip to the ER because Jessa was hemorrhaging.

Joy's 1st (Gideon): Baby was breech, and big, and she was damned fortunate (IMO) to be taken to the hospital for a C-section.

Jill's 2d (Samuel): another unplanned/emergency (see note above) C-section, with much mystery surrounding the situation and Sam's condition at delivery, although happily he seems to be a normal healthy kid now.

Jessa's 2d (Henry): home delivery, no trip to hospital.

Jessa's 3rd (Ivy): home delivery, followed by ambulance being called because they couldn't stop Jessa's bleeding.

Note: Jinger went to a San Antonio hospital to deliver Felicity (that was when the count was one uncomplicated home delivery out of five attempted home deliveries for her sisters). Very wise of her, IMO. Presumably she could count, and if she couldn't, Jeremy can. 

I don't care enough about Anna to even want to know how many of her deliveries were at home. Maybe she's the one who needs the birthing stool.

Jinger and Jeremy tried out a birthing stool when they were at that midwife’s birthing center.  I remember Jeremy hopping up and down on it like a fool.

Joy’s midwife might have brought one to the birth, but it did no good.

You let the ped know you had the baby, and come in soon after the birth, usually within 48 hrs. Some peds do home visits and come to you for the initial post birth visit. The midwife does the initial postpartum examination and monitoring of mother and baby and don’t leave until they’re stable, have eaten, and peed. Midwives typically visit their home birth clients within 24 hrs after the birth, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks, and of course are on call for any other needs between appointments. It’s quite extensive, and individualized when done right.

Anyone can register a birth.  You go to your local city hall office of records and get the paperwork, have it notarized and you're good to go.  Presumably, even lay midwives who do home births know how to do it and assist their clients with the paperwork and sign the birth certificate.  Anyone who is present at the birth can sign the certificate which just states that that person was present, and the baby was born alive (or stillborn) to that particular woman.  If the EMT's deliver someone, one of them signs.  I once had a college student who hadn't told anyone she was pregnant, deliver in the bathroom of her brother's apartment.  He was also a college student.  He called 911, the baby was very premature and died just a few minutes after birth.  For insurance reasons, it can matter if the baby was born alive and then died as opposed to being stillborn.  We had the brother sign the birth certificate since he was the only one there who saw the baby try to breath.

Any practitioner who does homebirth should be able to connect her clients with a pediatric practitioner who is accustomed to caring for homebirth babies and will do the usual PKU and other genetic testing as well as examine the baby after birth and as needed either at home or in their office.  They usually advise calling 911 immediately for any issues at delivery.

BTW, although many lay midwives will tell the parents that they will do the newborn exam, etc; they have NO TRAINING WHATSOEVER in newborn care or exams except for the few who've taken neonatal resuscitation classes which only cover emergency care (and ANYONE doing home births should have that certification at a minimum).  So, even if the lay midwife does examine the newborn, don't expect her to pick up significant heart murmurs or other issues; she knows not what she does.
