Loved the "Silence of the Lambs" type scene between BD Wong & the FBI's own Debbie Downer.

I thought Ray's business was going to be exclusively child porn when I saw the name Dolores Haze in the code; that was the real name of "Lolita".

I hate the weekly tease of Tyrell appearing, then nada.  I still don't understand why the parking lot attendant is dealing with Joanna... and why that goon is such a loyal  employee that he even murders for her.

That shootout in China was shocking.  What the hell is the deal with White Rose - did she order a hit?

So Ray is Mr. Robot's Ross Ulbricht -- I did get a kick out of the Dread Pirate Roberts easter egg on that one. Not sure how Elliot's going to get himself out of this one. I did appreciate that Mr. Robot was trying to protect Elliot on this one and stop him from taking the step to confirm what he suspected the site actually was.

Did we know prior to tonight that BD Wong's character was the China's minister of security? And is Dom the only one of the FBI team in the hotel lobby to not get shot (that we know of -- there was a second shooter and she was hiding, so we don't know how that will turn out)? it looked like the  other female was shot at the coffee bar -- was the guy who was shot and fell onto the steps the other FBI agent?

Really good episode once again.

I figured Ray was up to no good and he seems to be involved in every bad thing imaginable.  I'm glad Elliot wants to take him down but for a guy so smart, he was really stupid to think his activities wouldn't go unnoticed.

I'm really enjoying Angela's storyline this year.

This was the first time we learned of Whiterose's position in the Chinese government.  Fascinating.  Liked the scene with Whiterose and Dom a lot and Dom's becoming a good character.  I couldn't believe what happened at the end.

I pray to all that is holy that the show doesn't skew into some gooey love story between Elliot and Angela.  I get a bad feeling after Elliot's dream last week, where he connects with all of the people in his life, and now the scene this week where A&E have their little talk.

PLEASE, no "they've loved each other for years, finally get together, and their true love saves the world" nonsense.

Wasn't their boss, the one who took those photos with WhiteRose, not there?  Interesting.

I"m a little confused as to what Ray's business is/what Elliot stumbled on. I have a very old tv set so when they wide screen any sort of emails or texts I usually don't get a complete sentence, but only parts of them. Is he into child porn? Slave trading? Violence against women? I couldn't make out those photos on the website at all.

There was a bondage-type picture of a girl from Thailand and another screen selling oxycodone. That's all I got.

He runs a dark-web site where people can go to buy and sell anything that would be illegal on the open market. His site seems to be patterned after The Silk Road, which the feds found and shut down several years ago.

D0loresH4ze was a user that Elliot was talking to in an IRC channel.  It was someone he was working on the hack with, so I assume it was Darlene.  Elliot had 4 shells open that I could see, 1 running Ubuntu updates, 1 writing code to hack the FBI android phones, 1 chatting in an IRC channel, and 1 making tarballs.

Tyrell Wellick - I had thought I understood what happened to him. There was one scene where both Elliot and Tyrell were in the F Society building and Elliot reached into the popcorn machine and grabbed the revolver as if he was about to use it. So, I had assumed that he killed Tyrell. Unfortunately, a later scene had Elliot on the phone while his father was standing nearby and we heard Tyrell's voice saying something like, "Bon Soir Elliot". So, either that was just a dream or part of Elliot's insanity or someone was impersonating Tyrell. I suppose the cause of his death still remains a mystery or perhaps I'm mistaken about these sequence of events.

BD Wong - He appears to have a split personality. When he is male, he is the Minister of Security for China. But he also seems to be a female sometimes and is then White Rose. My understanding is that White Rose is the leader of the Dark Army (a malicious group of hackers). But perhaps the Dark Army is a state sponsored group that actually lives to achieve China's objectives.  If so, the massacre at the end of episode 05 could well have been ordered by TDA. It would have been a perfect opportunity for them to throw a monkey wrench into the FBI's investigation of the 5/9 attack. After all, it would be terribly embarrassing to China if it was ever discovered they had a large part in the 5/9 attack.

My guess is that White Rose has a great cover as China's Minister of Security. He/she can mingle with the FBI awa China's rulers awa TDA and is thereby very well positioned to know what is going on and when would be the best time to attack the FBI. I think this is so far the best subplot going on. It's very deep and delicious. The IMDB site lists DB Wong as only appearing in 4 episodes over both seasons so far. By comparison, Elliot is listed as appearing in 22 episodes. So, I would guess that means we will not be seeing much more of Dark Rose or her male counterpart. I would also guess the FBI group was invited to China for the express purpose of murdering them all and making all further investigation very difficult - at least to slow it down considerably. Very intriguing plot. Here is the link to the IMDB site which lists all the characters and the number of episodes in which they have appeared:

http://m.imdb.com/title/tt4158110/fullcredits/cast?ref_=m_ttfc_1

I hope to post more later.

Another strong episode. One detail I really like was when Darlene was confronting Angela. Angela sits down on the couch adopts a power pose and asks what Darlene wants from her. Darlene just plops down right next to her like "Girl, I know you from the neighborhood. Don't try to pull that shit with me."

I'm trying to figure out who is more terrifying, Joanna Wellick or Cersei Lannister.

I fired up Tor and checked the Mid City onion address. It timed out. I wasn't expecting an actual Mid City, but thought there might be an Easter Egg from the producers.

The scariest thing about Ray (outside of the human trafficking)? I think he made the decision to torture the IT guy as soon as he set up the meeting. The guy could have given Elliot nothing and he still would have been carved up.

I'm guessing that Lone Star (played by Michael Maize) is Ray's thug and he was given a phone which "mirrored" the monitor Elliot was watching. So anything that appeared on Elliot's monitor was also displayed on Lone Star's phone (and also presumably logged to some file so Ray could review it later). As a result, Ray could see everything that Elliot saw and when Elliot looked at some of the ads on his web site, Ray knew that Elliot had disobeyed Ray telling him not to look at the ads on his site. That is the reason Elliot was given the beating.

I think Joanna is more terrifying because when Cersei decides to murder someone, they get definite advance notice. But Joanna makes them think they are best friends and all is well and everything will be fine. Then, they only get a few seconds notice before they are murdered. Joanna is far more devious and much smarter too. Cersei is mentally deranged and will eventually decide she needs to do something really stupid to increase her power or exact her revenge and it will get her killed. Currently, many people seem to think her own brother will end up killing her - flip a coin, however as to which brother it will be.

I realize, BTW, that part of your post about Cersei is not terribly serious and neither is my reply. But, it's worth a brief discussion because the end of both these wretched lives should prove to be related to the way they lived their lives and also should prove to be exciting and have far reaching effects.

I think I saw the lady that has been referred to as "Karlene" - not "Darlene". She appears to be setting fire to some kind of book or document in a child's wagon. I know I've seen her in at least two diff episodes. Can anyone help me get some clarification as to whether these are indeed two diff characters (Darlene & Karlene)?

I'm pretty sure I heard her name pronounced quite distinctly as "Karlene" and she was said to be someone's gf. But I found that topic quite confusing. Any help?

I would also like to say how much I am enjoying this season. Much more so than last season. Lots of very interesting events taking place and it seems to me there is the promise of many more exciting events soon to happen.

The most enjoyable aspect of this season remains Dominique DiPerro. In a world filled to the brim with incompetence and derangement, she remains on of the very few bright and capbable people who seems like she will be able to stand up to the forces of darkness (at least to Elliot, anyway) and give him a run for his money) - by which I mean, very few people have what it takes to figure out what Elliot is doing and "get the goods"  on him - at least to the point where they are able to arrest and convict him.

For a good story however, I would expect that she will either decide that Elliot is a good guy who needs her help or who is able to help her catch some very bad (much worse) characters (thinking of White Rose and her Dark Army) and that she will decide to find a way that Elliot and her will be able to join forces and work together to save mankind. I know that is very ulikely. But I hope something like that happens to make for a good, good story.

I have read the ratings have taken a serious dip. I will be very sad if that is true. IMHO, this show really requires more than just two seasons to leave a satisfying taste in the viewers' mouth. It will be a serious tragedy (or at least as serious a tragedy as can be expected from a TV show) if it is cancelled before the third season begins.

AliShibaz, if actors are not season regulars, imdb often only counts their appearances in episodes already broadcast. So Whiterose may appear in more than four episodes by the time the series is done.

Discovering that Whiterose's male persona is the Chinese Minister of Security raises tantalizing questions about what she and Price are up to. I'm starting to think that the E-Corp hack and the resulting economic chaos stem from some plot Whiterose hatched and roped Price into, with the promise of protection and a big payoff. She could be working to benefit the Chinese government but more likely has another agenda, as Whiterose seems to be her true self. So what may have happened is that Price made a similar deal with Wellick: that Wellick would work to get fsociety in position to carry out the hack by shadowing and manipulating Elliot. (Whiterose of course guaranteed Dark Army help with the Chinese servers.) Wellick would take the fall for the hack in return for him and his family being protected. Darlene's boyfriend had Dark Army ties, so Whiterose could through her plant the seed for bringing down E-Corp. Now Whiterose's operatives are cleaning up the loose ends of fsociety, since its involvement cannot be known. I wouldn't be surprised if they turn on Wellick also before it's all over.

As for what's on Ray's site, in addition to the human trafficking and drugs already mentioned, they also showed ads for weaponry (I can't recall if it was a rocket launcher or some sort of machine gun but it was heavy duty) and a hit man for hire. It looks like it's not stuff that Ray himself is selling, it's more like a trading post where evil people selling evil things can find evil buyers.

I still like the show and I agree it needs more time. I hope the ratings are enough to make that happen.

I admit I found the massacre a bit much, though.

And I know they won't kill Elliot, because he's the main character. But it's hard for me to imagine him getting away from Ray. They would either kill him or keep him hostage because they still need his tech support.

That sounds very plausible to me. I hope one of us is right. It would be a kind of thrill akin to Elliot's thrill when he is able to hack some site.

Hopefully, Ray acted without much forethought and I would love to see Elliot outsmart him simply by talking to him and using a logical argument to convince him that it would be a fatal mistake if Ray were to kill him or seriously injure him. I can think of many reasonable arguments why that would be so.

I would very much enjoy if Ray has now entwined himself into the plot in such a way that he must be seriously defeated (i.e. imprisoned or killed) for what he did to Elliot. Wouldn't it be lovely if the season finale contained images of Ray, Ollie, Joanna and Lone Star taking a very serious fall for their misdeeds? That would wrap up the season very nicely IMO.

P.S. Lone Star is Ray's muscle man

So who trashed the FBI office?  It wasn't Angela.

I think the lollipops are a sign of some deep trauma or disappointment she suffered in her adult life (maybe the failure of her marriage proposal) and the lollipops are a relatively harmless way she can revert to a child like state. An FBI agent cannot adopt many childish behaviors and get away with them. Sucking a lollipop would seem to be one relatively harmless way.

I thought so too, because I was like, WTF, where did that come from?  I also thought it interesting that the scene after the massacre was when Ray had Elliot beaten.  It's like the hack, that Elliot doesn't even remember doing, has had far reaching consequences, more than he ever thought.  His boss's murder, Franco's murder, the FBI massacre, and Elliot himself getting beaten.   A lot of movies made about hackers, show edgy, and kind of harmless, lovable nerds, taking on "the man."  In this season, we are seeing the aftermath of the hack.

I love the use of Craig Robinson being really cast against type.  When I first saw him, I was like, "should I take him seriously?"  Now I'm like, "yes, very seriously."

ETA:  The scene when Dom told WhiteRose about refusing a marriage proposal, did Dom say, "they got down on one knee and proposed" as opposed to "he got down on one knee and proposed?"  Maybe it was a woman who proposed?

This season and episode was a lot about duality.  Can you be two things at the same time?  WhiteRose and Ray have managed it pretty successfully.   Dom can be both repulsed and fascinated by what she sees around her.  Ironically it is Elliot who hasn't decided if can be both Elliot and Mr. Robot at the same time.

The biggest shock was not only that White Rose is the Minister of Security for China but also that Elliot's mom appears to be real and not a figment of his imagination. Darlene actually asked where she was when she went over to talk about Angela.

I feel like White Rose/Zhang is the key to this all but delving into his/her character is starting to seem like going down the rabbit hole. White Rose is like a one person Illuminati. When the minister of security of China agreed to let a Western intelligence agency have full access to all kinds of Chinese intelligence files, including whatever they had on the Dark Army, I should've known shit was about to go down. When the Minister  took Dom into the bedroom and showed all White Rose's gorgeous one of kind traditional Chinese dresses, and told Dom it was his sister, I should've known shit was about to go down. White Rose is too smart to not know that the FBI would know whether he had a sister or not. White Rose was planning on her not be alive much longer to go back and tell tales or piece together all Dom had learned. I believe now that all along the plan was to kill the agents and what better place than a free buffet. What healthy American can resist free food. The FBI boss not being there is no coincidence. Wasn't the trip his doing and funny that it should include all the main agents involved in investigating the hack. He is probably a tool of someone, but lawd knows who.

I was expecting Ray just to be into the on-line drug trade, so finding out he was basically into everything, including super young sex slaves and hired assassins, was a bit of a shock to me. I don't think I have ever seen Craig play a dangerous role so this dark turn was really surprising and good.  Him trying to make nice with the former IT tech by going over to his home earlier in the season after his beating makes him come off as even more sinister because he was acting like the beating was something completely out of his control when he most probably ordered it.

So is poor rat tail boy dead or just horribly injured? Again.

Damn Joanna!!

Show, enough with the is Tyrell dead or alive stuff already. Have to say, although I like the character, I didn't at all like where they took him late last season. I mean killing his boss's wife and joining Elliot just didn't work for me. He just seemed like he would have made a great nemesis to Elliot given his position and the fact he knew his shit.

Excellent analysis on White Rose. Better than any of the professional commentators I've read.

Especially the part about how he was so willing to turn over all of China's secret files to the FBI.

She did say "they" -- at least I thought so, and the closed captioning thought so too. She was what we call "playing the pronoun game." It at least leaves some questions about her declined proposal.

I was pretty sure I heard a "he" in there somewhere... "I thought he was the one" perhaps? I was actually listening for pronouns to see which way they would go with her, and while I can't remember what the sentence was, I did think I heard a reference to it being a male partner...

There has been speculation that Elliot is not at his mother's house but in a psychiatric hospital, only he has translated everything about his life there into terms that a non-institutionalized person would. One clue that had been part of that theory was that Darlene never interacted with or referred to their mother. So the original poster was using that to counter the theory, to prove that Elliot is indeed with his mother.  Islandgal140 and I were pointing out that since she said "dragon-lady" and not "mom," she could be referring to a female staff member whom Elliot has reimagined as his mother.

And that would turn out to be a most tragic error.

I think Elliot and the other hacker getting beaten half to death for peeking at the site is a clear message.

I think Elliot and the other hacker getting beaten half to death for peeking at the site is a clear message.

Yes. Perhaps it is sufficient. I regret having made my above post. I'm going try to retract it. I will keep a copy in case the mods object to my doing that.

I was pretty sure I heard a "he" in there somewhere... "I thought he was the one" perhaps? I was actually listening for pronouns to see which way they would go with her, and while I can't remember what the sentence was, I did think I heard a reference to it being a male partner...

I only heard "dating who I thought was the one" or something non-gender specific like that. I thought the use of "they" kind of stuck out - it seemed deliberately ambiguous, but right now I'm not sure what the significance would be of her having a female love interest... then again I'm terrible at analyzing plot points, lol!
