Artistic Gymnastics: Stick the Landing!

It won't be high enough for high bar finals, but hope he'll make A-A...

But it's more than just today to qualify for A-A, right?

it's just today.
He'll more than qualify for the AA.

I had to laugh re: your China comment. it's true but like I said - Japan usually implodes in the team final. so rather them do it now - and get the shakes and falls out now, and then kick the ass in the final.

Brazil is really embracing their time here and doing really well.

Can each team qualify three for all-around or just two?  If two and his scores are low, well then I guarantee that the #2 guy will come up with a sudden "injury" a la the Russian women in '92.

LOL i just wrote about the Gutsu/Galiava 92 "injury" too. I know for the women it's top 2, so I am assuming for the men it's top two as well

What was Kohei's AA score? And what was Japan's team total? I can't get on NBC to watch at the moment so I'm freaking out over here.

hold on i'll get it for you.
Japan's final score: 269.294
Kohei's final score: 90.498 (stupid CBC making me do the math)

Thank you @Daisy <3 <3 <3

269.294 isn't awful. I finally found a list of the prelim scores and they're currently in first for qualification. Now they need to go, regroup, and be awesome for Monday. And no Pokemon Go!

No problem.  - and yeah - they won their qualification.
I can't see them falling out of the top 6 teams so they are good. According to BBC people - the gymnasts on both sides have had some issues with the floor etc, during podium, so they were saying a lot of the scuttles on landings, (issues with floor routines) etc should be cleaned up by both men/women's team finals, when they get another podium under their belts, + nerves out. which I can understand. Usually Japan implodes during the Team finals, so maybe this is just a reverse of fortunes for them. the most disappointing for me is Kohei missing the EF on high bar because i don't see that 14.3 making it what so ever.

Where are you guys watching this? I don't see it on the NBC networks.

It's streaming on the NBC Sports app.

I will be sacrificing my Sunday sleep-in tomorrow to watch the women's gymnastics on the app. 8:45 am. It was almost easier before they streamed everything, just to bitch about it and then watch the highlights package in primetime!

on the Live streaming on the official website for Rio (Olympics.Cbc, NBColympics, BBC Olympics etc). you'll be able to watch on television soon though, esp. because the USA will be on at 1:30

Why was Kenzo scored so low on floor? It said he got a penalty (I'm assuming out-of-bounds) and his execution was 7.833, which is low for him.

he wasn't very clean. lots of step outs.

It's on the nbcolympics.com live feed.  They have cameras on each event, so you have to pick the event where your team is (see my post above).  I keep hoping that NBC would allow this on Bravo or USANetwork, but I guess we should be glad it's streaming COMMENTATOR-FREE. And I have Apple TV, so I "am" watching it on my big honking TV via my iPhone.

What channel?  I seriously doubt it will be on any channel, though, because NBC wants to save gymnastics for prime time tonight.

The problem is that the website requires authentication through your local cable provider, so if you have Internet but not cable (as is the case with me), you're screwed and it totally sucks to be you.

Gymnastics is part of tonight's primetime package. So I highly doubt it will be on any television channel before then.

This is true - which sucks, because you always have to wonder if they are going to show you all the good stuff. like will they show that Brazilian guy's floor routine, and then how he burst into tears? I hope so but i doubt it.  CBC is awesome that they'll show you the entire event - then do the "relevant highlight package" at night.

that sucks. :( thankfully CBC just gives you everything . other events across their partnership - TSN, Sportsnet, you have to, indeed, use your television provider).

I wonder if you can get the nbcolympics app and see it?  (I do have Time Warner)

The app requires that you validate your cable provider, too, and login with the online account you use to interact with your cable provider.

Brett Schneider (sp) fell off High bar so he may not be able to qualify for EF Bar either. (same thing as Kohei. BIG move, and his hands just couldn't hold on).

Max Whitlock 15.5 on floor. Good job! <3

Yep, I've been watching the UK (ok, GBR) men on floor, and Max Whitlock seemed effortlessly in a class of his own as of that point. Excellent work.

On the streaming, NBC has been showing everything. You can pick whichever event you want to watch.

Thanks for the info about the schedule, AuntieDiane! Now I can sleep in (provided my four-year-old lets me, that is).

mhm. but like some people are saying they can't access the NBC website  - that's all

I'm already missing BBC covering this round. I don't know why i can't get it again.
GB is kicking all the Pommell Butt.

What apparatus are the US men on right now?  I'm having trouble finding them.

Eta: never mind. From what is already posted, it looks like they will be on floor after Germany.

Yes, he hurt himself early in the routine and didn't finish.

yah. CBC just showed it. he hurt his knee, so he just got marked on his first pass. it looks like he's completely out - and he's also Germany's best pommel worker so this could hurt the team as well.

US Men are on parallel bars. Should be finished and heading to horizontal bar shortly.

ETA: They destroyed parallel bars. So proud. <3

Thanks!

That poor guy. He looked both in pain and miserable about what had happened, right afterwards.

Edited to add: I find myself fascinated by, and kind of pulling for, the gymnasts in the Mixed Groups (currently Azerbaijan, Norway, New Zealand on floor). It must be extra challenging to train yourself to an Olympic standard when your country doesn't put together a whole team.

Just watched Samir Ait Said from France break his leg on Vault. It was horrific. Just shows how dangerous these sports can be.

That was the worst thing I've ever seen in this sport.

I know this has been explained to me before sometime, but do only a certain number of team members have to perform each stage of today's qualifications? I just saw the US team doing floor, and 5 team members were listed onscreen but only 4 did a routine. I saw Danell Leyva sitting on the sidelines with the others, but not dressed for, or doing a routine for, the floor.

Really nice floor scores for Sam and Jake, by the way.

someone in Mixed group on pommel had the BEST "omg I just made a mistake PLEASE no one notice." face ever.

@PoshSprinkles that is happening i am noticing it. I am getting Sydney vibes. I hope nothing is wrong with the vault. but there are a lot of people skidding off, and moving to the side, like they aren't prepared. they need to look at it.

it's okay! :)

Yes. Day 1 Qualifications.  -
Team of 5.
4 perform
lowest score dropped
3 scores count = team score.

So if you were a specialist - you'd do your event.
if you were going for allaround - you'd do all 6 (or 4 for women).

Day Two Team Final
Team of 5
3 perform
all 3 count.  = team score.

is the foot bar on vault new? I remember in London you were allowed to take a step back.
(German vaulter, too the side, needs to take a step back).

Who are the commentators on the NBC livestream?  I'm watching the first one (qualifications subdivision 2, I think).

My list says Jonathan Horton, Courtney Kupets and Jim Watson.

I am honestly nervous about the Vault. I switched to the Vault feed only and its scary. They are all falling off to the side or landing badly.

Indeed. I actually am sort of liking Horton. I wish they'd switch him with Tim Daggett. I think Horton is doing a far superior job of explaining the elements than our pal Tim.

Is there an official process through which teams can request that the vault be examined? Because it seems odd that with all this vaulting catastrophe, no one has said anything yet.

Can the athletes or coaches or someone request that the vault be looked at? Something doesn't seem right--if I can see it, someone who only watches gymnastics during the Olympics or World's, it's definitely noticeable.
