This commercial has been on far too long. I hate the Rent-a-Center Tony Soprano who freaks out about the "fresh cup of lead."

Luckily, this commercial has been out of circulation here for awhile.

I haven't seen the commercial, but that makes me furious. Trying to be the cool parent by letting  your kids know how little you value their education.

Saw a commercial for Volkswagen today. Parent picks up sad face kids from school because Uncle Edward (or some Uncle) has died. Then the voiceover says something like Uncle Edward died 8 times this month as the kids give each other smirks as the principal looks them with sad face as they leave school. The kids jump giddily into the car where their siblings are laughing up a storm too as the voiceover says in one of the parent voices, "We don't even have an Uncle Edward." Turns out mom and dad take the kids to an amusement park and they’re all giddy and thrilled about getting over on the school so they can play in their new car. Way to go mom and dad. The premise of the commercial is particularly stupid because the principal would remember the same kids and the same relative so many times in a month but the idea that the parents think it's just swell to make up a death to get their kids out of school is awful.

I hate these ads, particularly since they remind me of my sister-in-law.  She would take her kids out of school a week early so they could go to Disneyland before it got too busy.  Her husband was the school principal.

Also, why do the parents even have to lie?  It's not like it's a college student making excuses about their late essay.  Are parents no longer allowed just to call the school and say they're picking the kids up early today?

Nope. You have to have a reason. Otherwise it's an unexcused absence. Sometimes work can't be made up because of it either. Also too many absences and you start getting nasty letters. Your kids have to be in school for a certain number of days a year. Otherwise basically they flunk and have to do that grade again.

I used to call my kid and myself out sick every Halloween. We'd rent scary movies, eat junk food and work on his costume for that evening. The tradition started after one Halloween when he really was sick and we watched scary movies all day. But that was it. One day a year.

Okay, but the parents can't think of any other excuse then the same dead relative. There's doctors appointments, dentist appointments, someone sick in the hospital, eye doctors? What? Yes, my mom did occasionally get my brother and me out of school for a fun day to hang out or go to the movies together or if the roads were bad or if it was cold enough and always had an excuse ready at hand (the schools rarely closed no matter how bad the roads or how cold it was. She disagreed and thought it was unsafe ). She only ever used the dead relative story once on herself that was due to an unusually high sick year and just needed a break. Unfortunately for her right after she got back to work a relative really did die and she felt so guilty she never used that excuse again.

I'm hesitant to bring this up because of the earlier conversation accusing Joan Lunden of telling us to "warehouse" our elderly parents....but the commercial I hate right now is the one starting with "mom started to lose her words", and ends with "because Dad made us promise to keep Mom at home."

First of all, no parent should required his/her kids to make a promise of this nature, and hold them hostage to it no matter what the circumstance.  Secondly, TV advertising shouldn't normalize that promise.  Sometimes it is just impossible to keep an ill, elderly parent in their home no matter how many Bright Star (or whatever service this is advertising) nurses stop by.  It's great that these services are available, but I wish that promise weren't a part of it.

Yes, no parent should make their kid or kid promise that. A lot of times its just not possible. No one likes to have to put their parent into a nursing home but most of the time there is no choice. My dad and his siblings hated having to put their father in a nursing home but they had too. Plus it also was best for him. A staff that had the training for Alzheimers. He did real good there. They were able to get him to join in activities and stuff to the surprise of us all be because he was never a joining and he never would have listened if any of his family suggested he do that. Looking at the house the mother lives in its a nice home and looks like a lot of land with it. That property could end up paying for her nursing home for years.

Chevy: “You know, we’re getting some salty feedback about our focus group commercials. Let’s call up the ad people and see if they can’t come up with an alternative for all the grumps out there.”

Ad People: “Picture it. A variety of folks going about their work while reciting song lyrics in that stilted, faux-awkward way that seems really authentic but just pisses the audience off. I’m a little bit country, a little bit rock n’roll - a catchphrase that will never trigger rage blackouts even if it’s uttered ten times in the commercial.”

Dr or dentist appointment or eye appointment=bring a note from the office to prove it.

Someone sick in the hospital would probably work once or twice.  But no one is going to begrudge or punish students for leaving school because someone dies.

And your mom sounds totally cool for doing that!

Watched a lot of football this weekend.  There is a commercial for GMC (pickup trucks) that has played so many times my gums are starting to bleed.  It shows hundreds of people carrying what appear to be pieces of junk (turns out it is tailgates) for a long way. There is a rugged guy standing on top of a hill (or maybe a small mountain) waiting for them.  He climbs up on the tailgate of his truck and smiles as he watches all the people singing and lugging their tailgates toward the mountain for the large tailgate party.  Maybe it was the world's largest tailgate party; can't remember; which is shocking since it has been on so many times.  But.  The most annoying part is all the people are chanting the "na na na na; na na na na; hey, hey...goodbye" or some such.  I shriek to Mr. Kemper who doesn't see what the big deal is.

I think this drives me crazy because the same tune is playing in a different commercial (although I think they are chanting "Be Ready" instead of na na na na) for the football playoffs.  Enough.

Also beware if someone pours a concrete pad randomly in their yard. Yes they say they are going to build a shed or garage on it but they never do. Then they start getting paranoid and put up security cameras everywhere. Then you realize that you haven't seen the wife in a while. When you get up the courage to ask about her, he says she ran off with a long haul trucker. But I digress. It's probably nothing. Forget i said anything.

Oh, she really was! One time she showed up at my middle school to take me out because she completely "forgot" about a doctor's appointment and we went off to a casino for the rest of the day. She gambled, I played video games, we ate lunch together in a restaurant. It was so much fun. Sometimes you just needed a break from work and school, hang out and have fun.

Ugh! That BrightStar ad needs to be buried in a desert with all those copies of the E.T. home video game. In the voiceover, the woman says, "One year ago, Mom started searching for her words." Did her daughter write it down in her journal? "Mom started searching for her words tonight. Time to find some really expensive home care for her because Dad made us promise to keep her at home.  And I don't want to disappoint Dad, even though he's dead and all." I really hate that commercial.

I couldn’t figure out what they were even talking about the first time I heard that ad!  I was in another room and couldn’t see the TV.  Then when I finally saw it and saw “turmeric”, I got all stabby at their pronunciation.

I'm repeating myself, but regarding the Dad made us promise commercial, tell him yes, let him die in peace, and then do whatever is practical for Mom after he's gone, I had an aunt raised in a Mennonite family where the women didn't cut their hair. Her mother's dyeing wish was for her to never cut her hair. She told her yes, I won't. Not too long after her mother died, she cut her hair and had short hair for the rest of her life.

The new Progressive commercial is something else. It turns out that Jamie has a huge house, throws amazing parties, and has both great kids and a tall hot Euro supermodel wife, all thanks to combining his insurance with the company. What I find irritating is that the said tall hot Euro supermodel wife points out that one of Jamie’s visiting co-workers is “tiny, like a child!” (said with a grating Euro accent) causing laughter from her and Jamie, yet having the short woman giving a look like, “Yeah, FU tall hot Euro supermodel wife!” I would believe all short women watching the commercial are saying the same thing.

I  can understand why this band is so bummed that its lead singer's UC or Chrohn's disease keeps her from opening her mouth and saying "Aaaaaaaa" like she's seeing her ear, nose and throat doctor.

All the commercials for this product (what's it called?) follow the same theme.  The person who is suffering from UC or Chrohn's disease is constantly disappointing everyone they come into contact with.  The one where the guy is coming to meet the girlfriend's parents and they all sit around looking sad, waiting for him to show up.  Before that, at a party, he had to duck out to go to the bathroom presumably, and the same girlfriend looked sad.  Every time I see it I think how selfish and spoiled she must be.  She may be worried about him, but it's mostly that he is disappointing her.  So therefore, ask your doctor about XXX so you won't continue to let people down.

Kind of creepy, but I'm glad to see that she is still chugging along. A friend of mine does the most wicked Dr. Ruth imitation :)

He also did one episode of Will and Grace.

I can't speak for the original poster, but I dislike Oprah because everything -- even her philanthropy -- is all about her and how great she is. I think she did a "tribute" to Mary Tyler Moore that was more about Oprah's feelings and less about MTM.

I hate many of the Progressive commercials with Jamie, not because of him, but because they first made him the butt of mean jokes and now the ridiculous one that he has a big house and a hot model wife.

The new tax prep software commercial -- H&R Block? TurboTax? -- that consists of the word "free" repeated ad nauseum

I doubt anyone is paying attention to the name of the uncle, but even so, the kids of George Foreman's daughters have five Uncle George's before adding in any by marriage and the only thing unusual about that is that they have the same middle name too. You can also have an "uncle" who really isn't. The principal might question the wave of deaths.

I hate (hate!) vocal fry but I am skeptical about her (and others') claims that they're earning thousands of dollars using this app. If you're earning this much on your spending, maybe you needn't be spending the money in the first place? Anyone have a link to the FX "Better Things" commercial running on NatGeo? It's the most obnoxious thing ever. It's a video where they boost the volume of your TV, then they play a very loud cell phone ring tone 4-5 times to grab your attention, then they advertise the name and date of the show. It's so loud, I thought a friend left a cell phone in the room or something. And the worst part? It's during a night time slot and repeats a lot. I started seeing/hearing them at 1am and it's 6am now and I've seen/heard it about 5-6 times.

I've had loud vocal commercials before, but this takes the cake for the most annoying tv commercial ever, as the commercial is essentially an alarm to wake people up. So bad I  made an account  and seeked out somewhere to complain, which I never do. Seriously, fuck you FX and the Better things show. You did a great job of making me hate your show without even watching and I will now go downvote and 1 star your show whenever possible on the internet.

Some folks enjoy their RVs, though. I met a couple in one when I was going down the Natchez Trace. She told me they sold their house & bought a new, smaller one now that they're empty-nesters. Before they formally moved in, her husband suggested they try RV'ing for, maybe, 6 weeks & see if they like it. TEN YEARS later, they're still driving their "house" around and having the time of their lives. She's got one of those walking sticks she collects medallions for & she's got more medallion than stick. We kept running into one another at the "overlooks" & historic sites. I found that one of the coolest things about driving the Trace - the people you meet more than once along the road. It was great fun.

My brother and his wife do the same, only they work at national or state parks around the country.  They get paid a small amount, have free RV stays and hookups wherever they go, and get to see the country.  They love it.  It's not something I'd want to do but they love it.

<small voice> Twice we pulled the kids out of school to go to WDW.  It was a short week at school anyway, with 3 days off for fall break.  We did not lie about a dead uncle though.

I assumed that was what was going to happen at the end like the one he dreams of being Big Jim or that it would be revealed that he hired those people to pretend to his family to try and make himself look cool only for his coworkers to laugh and think he was lame. Given how his coworkers treat him I really was surprised that they turned out to be his family. That was nice.

That's a good point. You'd think they'd move in with her to follow their promise they made to Dad or move Mom in with them. Nope, apparently leaving Mom alone in her house and paying someone else to take care of her while they simply visit when ever they feel like it is keeping the promise. And hey that person can fix them snacks too when they visit. Well that really makes them come off caring right?

They made a new federal law several years ago that decibel-levels in commercials could not exceed those of the TV shows.  You should visit BBB and the FCC to complain, too.  I have not been unfortunate enough to hear this monstrosity, but it would surely make me throw at least my shoe at the TV.

Schools want you to account for stuff.  And it's stricter now than when I was in school.  My mom would let me stay home occasionally ,but not often because it sets a bad example.  Most schools do allow for a family vacation, but the prefer you get some education while you're there (the form we always had to fill out wanted you to visit things like museums, etc).  Lying about it is not cool, and sure to get you in trouble if you're caught.  I know someone who would frequently pull their kids out of school on supposed "educational trips", like going to a safari themed amusement park ,and calling it "Learning about nature".  Any wonder their kids are brats who hate school?

I don't hate her per se, but I am not a fan.  Her being in a commercial with "worship me" in the background is lame.  And someone who has struggled with weight (and still does) is not someone I want to give me diet advice.  Someone who employs personal chefs, etc, is not someone I want to give me diet advice.  And I don't want to pay for the privilege (WW is not a free service).  I'm not tossing shade about weight - I am a big gal, and am losing weight by making small and simple dietary and lifestyle changes - but what I didn't like about WW was the constant having to figure out the formula for whatever system they were using at the time, and them encouraging you to buy their foods (frozen dinners, frozen desserts, and a line of snacks they used to make) because it's "easier".  That's more in the Nutrisystem/Jenny Craig territory (but not entirely).  I will give her one thing - her "O, That's Good" broccoli/cheddar/rice side dish is really good, and reasonable in carbs.  I haven't tried any of the other ones.

It may not be up to the school to police this kind of fraud, but just to get the necessary paperwork for review by someone at the school board/dept. I couldn't help but notice that the "peel-out" from the school was pretty lame, so ITA that it's not the car the kids care about.

Dear Netspend card, you cannot get paid 2 days earlier that the payroll is released. There used to be this thing called "float" about banking and I assume this is what they are basing that on, but it's been many years since banks would not let you cash your paycheck on your payday. I bank at a small bank, on payday, if I did not have enough in my account "available" to cover an ATM withdrawal, I could not get it until after midnight, which sucked, but if I needed the cash, I could go into the bank or the drive-through on payday and cash a check. Now, this has been several years. Now, on the day my retirement check is deposited to my bank, I can make ATM withdrawals. It was in the 90s, the last time I worked in payroll, but even then, the payroll was transferred at 12:01 AM on payroll days and employees could cash paychecks or make withdrawals, especially if they banked at the same bank as the company or another large bank, it was only in small operations like where I bank that had different, stupid rules. Back in the 70s when I first started working in banks, it was a very different time and things were not as computerized and "float" came more into play than now.

Also, the guy sending flowers to his mom? Looks like a Duggar, I'm not taking any banking advice from a Duggar.

Wasn't suggesting that the kids wanted to play in the new car. The parents wanted to play around in their new toy. Although if the parents just wanted to do that, why take the kids out of school. Just go for a long drive until you have to pick them up from school. Stupid commercial all around.

"I'm a family man.  I'm a techie dad." Why do I want to cut this guy up into tiny pieces?

Get in line!  This commercial drives me crazy, if for no other reason than that the guy talks as though he has marbles in his mouth.  It took forever before I realized he was NOT saying "I'm a Kentucky dad," which of course makes no sense.  Then, toward the end, he says "I'm in Pride Development."  Say what?!  I assume he's actually saying "Product Development," but that's not what I hear.  Maybe it's just me and my old-lady ears.

hate (hate!) vocal fry but I am skeptical about her (and others') claims that they're earning thousands of dollars using this app. If you're earning this much on your spending, maybe you needn't be spending the money in the first place? (Yeah, I just learned one can sell stuff, but which is happening more?).

There's a certain kind of stupidity common to gamblers, pyramid scheme participants, and late-night TV ad pitch-people, where they only count the money coming in and never subtract the money going out.

My brother and sister both seem to practice that kind of accounting, they keep close tabs on what I owe them, how much they spent that is my share, but can't seem to remember the groceries I bought or the utilities I paid and that they owe me a share in that. Selective accounting, I call it.
