The Duggalos: Jinger and the Holy Goalie

That book is toast. They were banking on the Duggar name to sell it. It's poison now.

Especially with the whole “situation with Josh brought us closer” I’m thinking they found out after the book was written and that’s why the pulled the kids off SM.

Wonder if they will lose their free house and all the perks ? Jermajesty might actually have to gasp work 9-5...

The good thing is Felicity is too young to be affected by this event.

Not going to happen.  The first print run is already done and preorders are being processed.  I don't forsee a secondary print run happening.

The rest of the book world has been talking about this issue in regards to the latest biography of Philip Roth that was penned by a credibly accused rapist.

It's at least possible that the negative publicity will renew interest in the Duggars and get some people to check out the book who otherwise wouldn't have. I just don't think it's probable - though I've been wrong before about how well books associated with controversy will sell.

Just now, MargeGunderson said:

Pretty sure they can't without incurring huge shipping costs, since all of the books (not just this one) scheduled to drop on Tuesday have already shipped.

That said, I expect at least some independent booksellers - and quite possibly Barnes and Noble and Booksamillion - will ship the books back anyway or strip them, not wanting them on their shelves.

This would be entirely Hachette's mess if Jinger and Jeremy had gone through a literary agent, but since they apparently didn't, I suspect it will be Jinger and Jeremy's mess as well.

Sorry, I meant to say the promotion of the book. I don’t know how they could do it now, give the circumstances.

That's a good statement.  Good for them.  I think they are done with him.  Well, I hope so.

I suspect the publisher and the authors just really want this book to go away now, so orders will be fulfilled/it will remain on sale, but nobody will want to talk too terribly much about the book.

They are also going to have to deal with the inevitable rush of people who are suddenly very interested in that book and are not going to be sympathetic.

I actually mentioned this on here a few days ago about how Jinger was defending her parents and that is likely going to rub people the wrong way because she seemed so naive about it, and some folks rightfully pointed out at the time that the audience will primarily be leghumpers who would agree with Jinger's defense of them.

I'm not so sure that's the case now, and those chapters in which Jinger tries to defend her childhood and her parents and also how Josh's molestations were handled within the family, have already aged badly even before the book was released. I doubt Jinger, Jeremy, or Worthy want to spend a lot of time addressing that, but they may fear a PR shitstorm from pulling the book and appearing to hide things.

I’m sure the publisher wrote it. Or their agent. Good for them for posting it

It really depends on the size of the initial print run and how many preorders.  The book comes out on Tuesday, the preorders are being processed for delivery as we speak.  There is not really enough time for people to cancel anymore.  Also the publisher will have deals with B&N and Amazon and independent book stores that will keep some copies in stock for the near future.  The bookstores can choose either to sell the copies they have on hand or wait for the publisher to buy them back.  Most will choose to sell.

Jeremy and Jinger better hope that they have kept some of their advance in savings.  No way this book is going to earn out now.

Jeremy must be beyond pissed right now. Duggar name is probably ruined so good luck using Jingle as bait for freebies.

Live by the brand, die by the brand. That's the life of the "influencer," Jer.

Well, all the other Duggar books have been there for some years now. So, you know, it'll bring the whole family closer together.

I am interested to see if MacArthur decides to distance his brand from the Duggar brand. Jeremy hasn't done much in the way of bringing a shiny, appealing appearance in anything. Jerm and his in-laws are more trouble than they're worth in terms of branding and drawing in the young, aspirational, hip Christians.

I think Jinger can and will criticize Josh while still lifting up her parents. I don't think she'll see the connection between their actions and Josh's behavior.

The Vuolos were smart to put out a statement and get ahead of the story, but I think this spells bad news for their book. The leghumpers have probably already ordered it, so the only way to draw in the casuals was to promote, promote, promote. I don't see how they can do that if they're not engaging via social media and have to hunker down thanks to Joshley.

They could go on the offense and do a media blitz,  publicly condemning Josh while encouraging people to support victim Jinger, but that would upset the family and I don't think Jinger would go there.

Basically, they're fucked.

They always were, they just managed to stay one crucial step ahead of the consequences. Jeremy never seems to really work at anything other than as a feeble wannabe influencer and semi-professional MacArthur suckup and Jinger has no apparent marketable skills and no education.

Sooner or later, the Grift Gravy Train derails and reality hits home.

Now I'm really wondering how the book approached the molestations. If they toed the party line of downplaying and claiming that the media were the real villains for targeting a good christian family then they are in deep crap now. If they managed to sidestep and focus on the recovery instead of the sex pest, it might, possibly, be okay.

I'm also really curious to see how things shake out with MacArthur. On one hand, for all RFP's faults, Josh's perversion isn't something that's JereMe's responsibility. On the other, I don't think "Jeremy who? Oh, you know, the brother-in-law of the guy who just got busted for child porn." is going to entice the millennials, especially in LA, ground zero for MeToo.

This is a good question. I can’t imagine MacArthur wanting to look like they’re even slightly defending child porn but it’s also possible it won’t even come up. It may depend on how Jer’s stock is doing these days in MacArthur Park. If they’re pretty much over him and have figured out that he’s just an empty designer suit, this may be the perfect excuse.

Jer finally got MacArthur to endorse the book in an Amazon "editorial" review.  Possibly unfortunate timing on JM's part --

“In the case of this book a few words are worth a thousand pictures. I know you have heard that said in reverse, but the truth is seeing Jeremy and Jinger on television is only the surface of the story. The real story below the surface is told in this delightful and compelling personal testimony, in their own words, as they recount the providential work of  God in their lives.”
―John MacArthur, Pastor, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, California

The first sentence is, uh, interesting.

And Jeremy knew what he was marrying into, and did it anyway. He thought Jinger’s many followers would help him gain celebrity. And now here he is 🤷‍♀️

I've been slow putting all the pieces together, but could knowing about Josh's likely future charges be why the Vuolos mostly stopped posting photos of their daughters?  There was a grand jury so the family would have known it was likely charges would result.

I almost hope it was, because if it is, it's the first time Jer and Jin have shown even an ounce of good sense and I applaud them for it.

Let's not get into what it says about Anna, if true, though.

Abbie & Kendra have always come across as sweet and genuine people.  Abbie certainty is older, matured, and has had more real life experiences but I assume both of them are HORRIFIED.  They did not grow up in the brainwashed family where Josh isn't insta forgiven because the devil made him do it and he asked for forgiveness.

I also can't imagine Joe and John David being anything but sick to their stomachs over all of this.

Would the family know about the grand jury proceedings? In my extremely limited knowledge, I thought those proceedings were sealed and in some cases actually secret?

Also did the Vuolo's ever make statement about why they stopped posting baby pics?

Would they have known about the Grand Jury though? Or is that all done on the QT without the defendant's knowledge?

A defendant has rights in federal grand juries so I imagine under most circumstances the person would know so they could obtain representation.

Grand jury proceedings are secret. No judge is present; the proceedings are led by a prosecutor; and the defendant has no right to present his case or (in many instances) to be informed of the proceedings at all.

No, and if I'm not mistaken, they dont even have to tell them what the search warrant was for.

Seems they don't have to tell the defendant until an indictment is issued.  I queried federal grand juries, but a state one slipped in.  Each state, of course, varies.

I am pretty sure Kendra’ parents are very fundie. They are living in Kendra’s house since her parents can’t support their big family.

I don't think they stopped sharing child photos because of Josh. They didn't remove all those posts of Felicity. Her image is still plastered all over.  I would think that if they were concerned about child pornography/exploitation, they would have removed the old posts too.

Federal grand juries are secret. You don’t know they’re convening or what charges they’re considering. The defendant to be does not appear before the grand jury. The defendant, his family, and the world learn of the charges upon indictment.

Given that this isn’t a big city and the Duggars are well known and we’re hearing that they knew an arrest was coming - there may have been some minor leaks where a grand juror tells his sister in law one of the indictments presented is the Duggar’s and she casually tells a friend at work and somehow JB hears and assumes Josh knowing the things he does. But officially a grand jury is 100% secret and no Duggar appeared before it or knew the exact charges until they dropped.
