During the final throes of the season's first arctic storm, the captains and crews need to battle for survival. While other captains fight the weather, rookie skipper Sean Dwyer decides to wait out the storm, making his first trip of the year under blue skies.

-that was a crazy wave that nailed the time bandit
-kenny was a complete disaster. I'm surprised Jake didn't throw him overboard.
-i feel like the crab can sense the easy, relaxed vibes from the Brenna A crew so they flock to its cages. Lol@Sean's deadliest cut about cod spaghetti. Everyone's else's is about some crazy rogue wave or something breaking, but the Brenna A is too chill for anything dramatic to happen to them. I love it. So far the Brenna A seems to be born under a lucky star.

Not much else. Josh's crew learned to count...yay?

Because Josh made sure they knew how to count.   Because only he, who was born bred and corn fed (what the fuck does that even mean) to be a crab fisherman, can teach the men anything having to do with crabbing.

I thought it was a good episode.

I miss the bantering on the Northwestern.  It's become a dull boat.  I think Edgar is just over it all.  I also think he may be in a lot of chronic pain.  Yeah, Jake was a foil for Edgar but it just seems to be more than Jake not being there for Edgar to mess with.

I also miss Andy being on the boat with Jon.  I know that a lot of people don't like Andy but they did have some fun interactions in the wheel house.

I just can't with Josh.  He just keeps trying too hard to be an entertainer for the cameras.  On the other hand, I get a kick out of Casey and his straight into the camera reactions.

Loving the Brenna A.  A whole different refreshing style going on.

Remember in the early years when there were deckhands that were fun to watch.  I miss that.  For instance, Sunshine was fun on the Northwestern (because of Edgar) and now he's just a nonentity on Saga.  Now it's just deckhands that screw up.

Jake really needs to re-evaluate his career choice. Dude's gonna have himself a heart attack or a stroke out there. I was waiting for him to take a (deserve-ed) swing at Kenny on his way out to the deck. I get this is his dream, but at some point, it's not worth killing yourself for it.

Whether Josh is playing to the cameras or not, his guys nailed the count and learned to work together. There's a whole lot of evidence in a whole lot of fields that positive reinforcement works better than negative reinforcement. It may seem like the wussy way to do things, but bottom line, his people improved their fluency and enjoyed doing it.

If Sean A had used that technique everyone would have been all over how creative he was and what a good captain.

Josh deserves his props for that.

Josh shouldn't have to bribe his workers to accurately count crab. They're already receiving a paycheck. I'm with Casey on this one. Those are grown men on the deck, not toddlers you're trying to potty train. Jake does need to get control of his temper, but that idiot needs to be put off the boat asap. He, like Josh's deck crew, isn't doing his job appropriately. Gone. There are plenty of other people looking for work. No need to tolerate that crap. Brenna A, I love you. I still love the Northwestern, too, although Sig shouldn't have gone out in that storm. Those bent plates and railing up in the bow are an object lesson for him.

I'm all for offering a little competition or incentive. I used to do it all the time when I managed stores and we would be doing something special to raise money for charity. Selling pumpkins for St. Jude's in October, lemons for Alex's Lemonade Stand in June, that kind of thing. I'd track it by cashier and the winner would get like a $10 gift card or something. Now, I sure as hell wasn't going to reward them for something like not have a till that was off money, you know, their JOB! Counting crab is their job and their whole season and haul depends on that count being right. Something like Josh's little contest could really come back to bite him. His guys now know they can royally screw him and the boat and Josh is too big of a wuss to stand up to them and tell them to do their job.

I wanted Mike Rowe (or Casey) to point out that a 10 grand fine for being over quota would offset these $100 bets pretty damn quickly.

Still have a mom crush on Sean. Loved his silent "aren't you precious?" looks at Josh when they were going out to watch the fireworks and Josh was talking about how much they had in common as young captains.  (Note also, as much as Josh kissed his ass and talked about his admiration for Sean, Sean's response consisted of... thanking him.)

Yep, I thought Josh let them off way too easily.

I remember a season or two back, that they weren't making accurate counts on the Northwestern.  Sig was pissed!  He laid the smackdown on his crew for that.  It shouldn't be that difficult to get an accurate count.  Especially for seasoned crewmen.  As it appears to be the case on the CM.

I am on Casey's side here.  I probably would have said something like, "You may treat the crab count like a joke.  But if we are short or if we have too much crab and we have to pay a hefty fine -- it is coming out of each and every one of your paychecks!"

My guess is then we'd have a lot more accurate counts from that point forward.

Sometimes when I read this board, I think that Josh could cure cancer and they'd still hate him here.

We are allowed to do so.

Okay, but I prefer to be indifferent to Josh, to me he's a non motherfucking factor on the show.

IMO real hate is reserved for those who commit crimes like rape and murder.

Freddie is home?  Really, Jon?!  He had a family for life on the Wizard.  He chose drugs over the consistently highest-paid F/V on the show.  Keith loved him.  Probably still does.

Jake gave us the all-time greatest example of Sig's "GO TIME" we'll ever see.  :)  He also gave us an actual example of a captain not playing with an admonition.  He told them each freaking pot had enormous meaning and importance.  When they screwed up that door, Jake stopped everything and turned around.  For once on this show, a captain actions totally backed up his extreme words.

Didja notice in the moment  when the TB took that horrendous rogue wave there was zero concern expressed for the Disco crew aboard?  It sure looked like we had a shot from a hand-held camera on the deck.  Speaking of...who makes the call on production being outside when foul weather appears?  Also, if I were on that crew, I would have punched James right in the face for taking his sweet time letting them know he was OK.

Ya think Edgar took some satisfaction that Sig was proven a fool for going out into that blow?  I note he kept his mouth good and shut about it.  :)  Doesn't he have a piece of the biz and will take some of that loss the NW will take in fixing the bow/rail?  I would have gone straight to Nick and let him have it, too.  Where was his mouth when conditions were worse than Edgar fished?  No phone calls this time, eh Nick?

It appears that Sig made out very well if he was given 20K lbs of Bairdi as a substitute for the Reds that Sean failed to deliver.  The Russian fleet has cut deeply into the pricing for Reds.  The Bairdi pay more/lb.  What I don't know is if Sig will lose any Red quota going forward for his having failed to meet his 2015 quota.  If not, Sig wins again!

Dickens would love this.  For all  of Josh being on his own this trip, the ghost of Casey is vividly present on the CM!
