Tara liked the book and just explained the premise to me. I'm in until/if this gets Lost-y.

It seemed kind of Left Behindy to me (which is a negative), but maybe this is less Bibley.  

Wow.  Adding a "y" to stuff really helps make a description out of ANYTHING!

How did I missed knowing about this? I am off my game.  But  I heard someone talk about it on a podcast the other day and checked out the trailer on YouTube. It looks weird and intriguing and I didn't know what to think of it really. (I didn't know it included the religious stuff until now...oops spoiled myself) I usually investigate left of center stuff on tv,so this looks up my alley.

Marked it down on my calendar and glad it's set up at this site already. Woo and hoo!

 

The biblical Rapture has occurred.  What becomes of the people left behind?  Lost's Damon Lindelof and HBO ask this question, starting June 15th 2014, at 10 PM EST. 

 

But according to HBO it premieres June 29, not 15th.  Right?

I really dug the book, but I'm concerned about it getting Lost-y as well.

There's not much more than a season's worth of materials, so if it does well, there's a little too much room to go off the rails with the mythology. One of the things I liked about the book was that it was never explained why the people disappeared.

It might help that the book's author is involved in the production of the show.

From interviews I read, that was the kiss of death to Flash Forward when the author's, writers', and producers' visions and egos clashed. So, it can go either way.

From a May 22 New York Times article (nytimes.com/2014/05/25/arts/television/the-leftovers-about-a-small-towns-loss-comes-to-hbo.html):

...A ghostly cult silently stalks the town, chain smoking.

...“One of the things that happened was, I started to think of the Rapture as an amazing metaphor for loss, and particularly sudden loss,” he [Perrotta] said.

But Mr. Perrotta’s Rapture came with a twist: What if it was random? What if it took a wrecking ball to one’s entire belief system?...

Great article, but the trailer looks like Revolution levels of violence porn, so, I dunno. I'll watch at least the pilot. Edited by shapeshifter

I read the book a long time ago and recognized what the trailer was for immediately, but I have no recollection of the story beyond the basic plot.  I remember it being pretty bleak. One thing I do recall is

yes, the people who were chosen to ascend were very random.  If I remember correctly Vladimir Putin was one person who disappeared.

I suppose that if its not supposed to be a real "biblical ascension" that might be interesting to watch, i.e. see how all the priests/other religious leaders react, not to mention self-proclaimed 'best Christians in the world."  Other than that, I'm not sure whether its going to be entertaining or not.  I can only take so much doom and gloom in TV shows.  And the title makes me hungry.

I watched the "Making Of" special for this show on HBO  last night and I'm really looking forward to it.   

My favorite part was the very energetic physicist they had on talking about all the possible reasons for the rapture.

Since many of my favorite shows are powerful enough to make some want to slit their wrists, how can I NOT be excited to watch? I'm expecting to really like it, so naturally the viewership will be low, possibly making this a one-and-done. Hope not.

Normally I'd be into this but Justin Theroux gives me the serious douch chills and I've had an irrational hatred for Amy Brennerman since back in the NYPD Blue days. The combo of those two might be too much for me.

I've only seen JT on the short bit of Six Feet Under.  And I haven't seen AB on anything regular than NYPD Blue.

 

I guess they didn't opt for big name actors in the cast.  These are more or less journeyman actors, with a chance later in their careers at stardom and acclaim.
