The final number for Jurassic World comes in at $208.8 million, enough for the new opening weekend record. Box office experts thought Universal was predicting too high of a drop on Sunday and that turned out to be the case. It also has a record for the biggest worldwide OW ever, besting the Deathly Hallows Part 2. How high can JW go? The summer weekdays will give it a huge boost.

I thought a lot of people had mixed reactions to it, but you never know.

I work at a movie theater, and on Sunday it was still pretty crowded, moreso than a usual Sunday. I'm not surprised there wasn't as big as a drop-off as there usually is for Sundays.

Man, they're never going to break away from sequels/reboots/remakes now, are they?

Nope. And isn't it a bummer? But if that many people (sheeple?) show up and plunk down their dough, should they change?

(Yes they should)

What's crazier, is they probably wish they could get their paws on all the popcorn money theaters made over the weekend too.

Fifa's United Passions confirmed as lowest-grossing film in US history

Frederic Auburtin’s £17m drama made just $918 from 10 cinemas last weekend and has now been pulled from screens by its distributor

FIFA Movie Director Breaks Silence on Bomb: "It's a Disaster; My Name Is All Over [This Mess]

In his first interview since the disastrous U.S. opening, French director Frederic Auburtin tells THR he tried to strike a balance between "a Disney propaganda film [and] a Costa-Gavras/Michael Moore movie," but the project ultimately tipped in FIFA's favor. "Now I'm seen as bad as the guy who brought AIDS to Africa or the guy who caused the financial crisis. My name is all over [this mess]," the director laments, "and apparently I am a propaganda guy making films for corrupt people."

Jurassic World is a little more than $1 million under the all-time second weekend record (currently The Avengers at $103,052,274). Fathers' Day tends to be good to action movies, so the final number just may go up. Inside Out takes the record for best opening weekend to miss #1, replacing The Day After Tomorrow at $68.7 million. It was blocked by the second weekend of Shrek 2.

June 19–24, 2015 Estimates:

This was a pretty damn good summer box office weekend in general. My movie theater ran out of like everything.

It really shows that the overall weak box office last year was down to the level of interest the general public had in 2014's slate. There was just one 2014 movie get to $350 million, barely, and it made most of its money earlier this year (American Sniper). This year there are already three, plus the latest Star Wars and the last Hunger Games movie are good bets to join the list.

The actual numbers give Jurassic World the highest second weekend ever, with $106,588,440. It's made $402.8M in ten days. It's going to get much closer to Jurassic Park in admissions than anyone ever would have guessed this time two weeks ago.

The worst case scenario is that EoT fails and that turns studios off of original Science fiction entirely. This will only hasten the system's inevitable collapse, since there is only so far you can reboot Spider-Man, exploit more and more obscure Marvel properties, and make sequels of sequels of sequels before you hit fatigue and diminishing returns.

EoT?

What Trini said.

Spy is holding up really well. I hope it can hit 100 million...it should a least surpass Tammy, which was 84 million.

Memorial Day weekend could have used Spy and that would've been one more weekend away from Jurassic World. I also think the reaction to Tammy caught up with McCarthy and hurt her next big comedy, but Spy will restore some goodwill. Summer weekdays will help the quest for $100 million, though Ted 2 will take screens and offer competition.

EoT?

Edge of Tomorrow, last summer's sci-fi with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt? It was out of theaters a while ago, obviously.

That was my guess too, but in context of emmastone's comment that makes no sense, since the success or failure of Edge of Tomorrow is long-since determined.

That the move dropped only 28 percent in its third weekend is pretty promising...I think the movie will have some decent legs.

To me, a really interesting contest is next week's premiere of Magic Mike XXL and Terminator: Genisys. On one hand, MM made less than the last Terminator film and its rated 'R', but the sequel seems poised to make more than the first by heavily marketing to its female target demo. Genisys is targeting males with action and Schwarzenegger, but Ahhnold and the Terminator brands aren't what they used to be. It also doesn't have any proven mega-moneymaking stars.

Does MMXXL have a chance to beat Genisys? I can't wait to see the headline puns if that happens.

Any predictions on how The Minion Movie will do?

Here's some tracking info that's about ten days old:

The funny little yellow guys of Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s “Minions” are looking at a lot of green — around $85 million to be specific — when they open at the box office on July 10.

Wow, I didn't think Terminator was going to be huge, but I didn't know it would be THAT huge of a flop:

Terminator Continues To Self-Terminate

42 million over a long weekend would be fine if the budget wasn't 155 million.

Can they FINALLY let go of the franchise, or consider actually going back to the R-rated format that served the movies so well?

This is going to get beaten by two movies that have been out for three weeks. That's pretty bad.

Estimates have less than $1 million separating the Top 2 and placing could change with the final numbers. It's not common though it did just happen less than a year ago. Also...hmm, looks like Inside Out just might take that title from My Big Fat Greek Wedding after all!

Hopefully the studio realizes that Arnold is done in this role. That would allow them to have a truly fresh start. Any time I saw young Arnold in the trailers, it kind of slipped into uncanny valley because I knew that footage was decades old/CGI.

Is Terminator going to make enough money overseas that the studio can pretend it was a success?

Inside Out finished at #1 with the final numbers: $29.7M for IO and $29.2M for Jurassic World. My Big Fat Greek Wedding lives another day!

I wonder if some of the people at Pixar wanted the notoriety that record. The movie was a success regardless of what the weekend was.

Probably not a success but maybe not an abject failure, either. It has a lower budget than Terminator: Salvation and if it makes more globally, they can always point to that as a positive, without dwelling on the fact that bringing back Arnold was supposed to draw in some of the audience who'd abandoned the franchise theatrically.

The never #1 record tends to last longer but Pixar can still say all of their movies have gone #1 at the box office. I think the never #1  is such a memorable record because MBFGW was such an unlikely success story. Before that it looks to have been Dances With Wolves, whose reputation has fallen off since its glory days, but it was an acclaimed Best Picture winner at the time.

Most analysts were predicting at least $60 million but I'd say the number is more on the low end of expectations than outright disappointing. Here's the Disney spin:

Executives at Disney, Marvel’s parent company, admitted that they would have liked a bigger number, but tried to accentuate the positive, noting that Ant-Man was, in their words, “an obscure character.”

The film, which is noticeably lighter in tone, was intended to bring in younger audiences, Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis argued.

“We were able to successfully launch a new character and to do so in a way that expands the audience of who is coming to see our movies,” he said. “In the long run, that’s of overwhelming value.

I'm sure they would have loved another Guardians of the Galaxy-style breakout, but were probably realistic enough not to expect Ant-Man to do that well.

He does seem to be box-office poison nowadays, but I think the bigger issue is that Self/Less isn't the type of film that's popular right now.  If it doesn't lure the kiddies or the family to the theater, not much luck.  It may do better once it hits Netflix or Amazon. He may get his mojo back with Deadpool.

Not sure what the projections were for Trainwreck, but it seems to have held its own.

Trainwreck was tracking at 20 mil so it over performed. I saw it  at a Sunday twilight that was a sell out.

I not exactly an expert on box office numbers, but that's an impressive opening for an original comedy starring two very untested box-office draws, no? And the strong reviews and word of mouth should give it pretty good legs too.

I have to admit, I was curious whether Amy Schumer's recent explosion would translate into box office dollars, or if she'd turn out to be another case of someone more "internet famous" than "really famous". But it looks like she just might be the real deal (I know Apatow's name being attached probably played a part too, but that hasn't been as big a boon in recent years as it was in the past).
