Vice cost 60 mil to make?  It just didn't seem like a movie that might have that big a budget.  Unless they blew it all on Bale's makeup.

I know, but it's from Annapurna, a production company that's run into financial difficulties because of overspending.

At least with Vice, you can say it's a period piece with something of an ensemble cast and the leads are draws in this kind of awards bait, plus it got nominated almost everywhere. Beautiful Boy somehow cost $25 million and I can't even begin to understand why.

Other than the cast, extremely talented but not one your average movie goer is going to pay to see on merit alone, what on earth did they spend that money on?  The rights to Sunrise, Sunset?

When I first read your post, I thought you said they’d bought the rights to use “and “Before Sunset.” I would’ve watched the movie for that!

Another MCU joint, another opening weekend over $150 million! It will be interesting to see if Captain Marvel ultimately ends up making more than Wonder Woman, both domestically ($412,563,408) and worldwide ($821 million). Also, if the upcoming Shazam will make more or less than Captain Marvel, as the original name of the character now known as Shazam was...Captain Marvel.

In other box office news, with an 80th anniversary re-release last week, Gone with the Wind has passed the $200 million mark for its lifetime total. Peter Jackson's World War I documentary They Shall Not Grow Old  ($17,439,421) has passed the domestic total of Mortal Engines ($15,951,040).

@Dejana How is that hold for Captain Marvel?

With the final numbers, the weekend-to-weekend drop for Captain Marvel is 55.7%. Here are the second weekend drops for the other first MCU movies. Direct comparisons are tricky because they opened at different times of year, so the moviegoing patterns aren't identical:

Superhero Origin Movies - Second Weekends After $100M+ Opening Weekends:

Black Panther  (2018)    $111,658,835  (-44.7%)  | $403,613,257  (Total After 2nd Weekend)  | $700,059,566  (Lifetime Total)

Captain Marvel  (2019)    $67,988,130  (-55.7%)  | $264,884,063  (Total After 2nd Weekend)
Wonder Woman  (2017)    $58,520,672   (-43.3%)  | $206,343,175  (Total After 2nd Weekend)  | $412,563,408  (Lifetime Total)
Deadpool  (2016)    $56,470,167  (-57.4%)  | $236,865,054  (Total After 2nd Weekend)  | $363,070,709  (Lifetime Total)
Suicide Squad  (2016)    $43,536,013  (-67.4%)  | $222,640,741  (Total After 2nd Weekend)  | $325,100,054  (Lifetime Total)
Man of Steel  (2013)    $41,287,206  (-64.6%)  | $210,078,153  (Total After 2nd Weekend)  | $291,045,518  (Lifetime Total)

I suppose I'm glad that another female-led comic book/superhero movie is doing well, but I'm just so sick of comic book/superhero movies that I wish it hadn't done well.  Along with a few other recent ones.  Then maybe there'd be room for a few other types of movies at the box office.  Yeah, I know, I don't have to go see it, but still.

It's great to see both Captain Marvel and Us doing well at the box office. Each 'diversity' movie that does well must be another tiny dagger in the heart of the bigots who are trying to police what's acceptable for Hollywood to make, and for people to watch.

As a straight white man, I've been catered to my whole life. It's nice. But I'm fine if not everything is aimed at me. While I haven't seen Us, Black Panther and Captain Marvel are fun movies. So either I get to see a good movie or I get to save my money. This is a win/win situation.

Dumbo opens on the low end of tracking and that Beach Bum number shows the McConaissance is truly dead, at least at the box office, though Harmony Korine is not the most commercial of directors. The Us hold is strong considering the size of its first weekend.

Yeah, Dumbo's kind of a disappointment. Too bad, Disney really needs a win right now. Anybody know of an upcoming Disney movie that's projected to do kind of well at the box office? Possibly with tickets going on sale Tuesday?

I really hope things turn around for this "Disney" upstart.

I think it's something to keep an eye on. Is Dumbo a one off, or will Disney's other live action projects underperform as well?

Aladdin could definitely be a stiff. If Lion King stiffs? That would definitely spark serious discussion in the boardroom.

One thing that REALLY needs to get discussed is why these live action kid cartoon movies are like 2 hours long. Dumbo is just shy of 2 hours, and Beauty and the Beast was OVER 2 hours. It was ridiculous. I know you're relying on nostalgic adults taking their kids, but if the kids are falling asleep because the movie is too long, they're not going to want to come back.

I think the issue with Dumbo is the age.  It has been a long time since Dumbo was a part of the pop culture universe.  Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King are still part of pop culture with the cartoon sequels and stage plays.  Dumbo was popular with people who are grandparents or even great-grandparents whereas The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty And The Beast are more likely to have a nostalgic hold on people who have kids at the right age to take to the theater to see this.

I think dumbo still has pop culture relevance. He’s a big part of Disney iconography- not as big as Tinkerbell mind you but big. I think the problem is that you took a very simple simple story and DRAGGED it out with beautiful CGI. My mom saw it on her bday (matinee so the kids would be in school) and she gave it a 7.

Dumbo is fucking traumatic! So they decided to up the ante by making it more life-like? I was just at Disneyland last week and we went to see the preview and I was fucking enraged just from that. HOW DARE YOU CALL THAT SWEET BABY UGLY! He's hiding in a haystack while his fretful mother refuses to be herded away from him and then I have to watch a humans talk about how ugly he is and how he has to be "fixed" in order to be worth anything to their circus?!

Didn't make me want to watch the actual movie. But, to be fair, the second I heard 'Tim Burton' and 'Dumbo' in the same sentence I thought 'Well, this is going to be an exercise in cruelty to outcasts. Again.'

Seriously, at this rate are they going to do live-action Bambi, too?

Probably but I hope not.  Losing Bambi's mom was traumatic enough when it was in regular cartoon format.  I don't know that I can take watching a realistic CGI doe get killed.  The forest fire sequence would be impressive but that's not a good enough reason.

Pocahontas is pretty much the only thing aside from Song of the South that I can't see ever getting touched. (There was a dramatic live version in 2005 but it wasn't Disney.) Lindsay Ellis did a really good essay on why Disney's Pocahontas was met with "meh" at the box office and why Moana is basically Pocohantas but with a bit more enlightenment on native cultures:

Are you referring to Terrence Malick's The New World?  'Cause I wouldn't exactly call that a dramatic live version of Pocahantas.  Unless you mean a non-animated movie of her story, not a version of the Disney movie.

I think it's something to keep an eye on. Is Dumbo a one off, or will Disney's other live action projects underperform as well?

Aladdin could definitely be a stiff. If Lion King stiffs? That would definitely spark serious discussion in the boardroom.

I think Disney should slow down with remakes, maybe to 1-2 per year if they insist on these live action adaptations. In the future, the ones that aren't guaranteed smashes will probably debut on the Disney+ service.

I guess they want to make the live action adaptations longer to differentiate them from the animated versions, to show it is not exactly the same, just with actual people. The remakes are probably being pitched at a slightly older audience, who can presumably endure a longer movie. OTOH, a shorter movie does mean more showings a day in theaters, which you'd think Disney would encourage.

The animated The Jungle Book is from 1967 and the recent remake was a huge hit ($364M domestic and nearly a billion dollars overall).

Granted, 1941 is a generation farther back than that, but I think the bigger issue is that a retelling of the Dumbo story didn't seem to have enough new to offer. It's nice that there is a less problematic version now but that alone won't drive box office in a big way. People know the general Dumbo reference but won't go out and see a movie just because of that.

I wonder if the studio was expecting a bigger opening weekend. Perhaps not, if it opened opposite a superhero movie.

I know this movie is loosely based on a true story, but it seems like a movie I've seen before but done better. Remember the Titans comes to mind. Or maybe it was the thought of watching Taraji's (fake) saggy boobs for 2 hours that kept me away.

And it opened way outside of the normal awards season window, which means they don't have much confidence that it will pick up noms. I always call January through April like "failed awards bait" season. LOL.

Edited to add; Yes, I realize there are outliers like Get Out.

Get Out wasn't released as an Oscar movie but became one as the year went on. It seemed to grow on critics as the months went by (comparing the initial reviews to its placement on year-end lists), but I don't think it would have had the same Oscars success without such strong box office. Traditional awards bait doesn't need to make $100-200 million to get nominations and wins, but movies in less Oscar friendly genres have to do more to get considered. Unfair, but often the way it is.

ITA that The Best of Enemies fits the profile of classic busted Oscar bait given its subject matter/reviews/release date. Taraji and Sam Rockwell were announced to star back in June 2015 and it started filming in May 2017. This isn't exactly one that they rushed out to theaters:

Weekends like the one upcoming is when I thank god for reserved seating.

How do you know you've got a big movie on your hands? When it has a halo effect on affiliated movies. The B.O. for Captain Marvel actually went up this weekend. And then there's this guy.

Two things: First, kinda shocked he's not from Florida. Second, I was worried Brie Larson might have to take out a restraining order, but it sounds like he did it just for the record.

I read your post too fast and for a second there thought you said, "As a sex worker..." No judgement, but it made me wonder what sex work had to do with Star Wars or The Avengers.

As a MCU non-fan, it still makes me happy that Americans still go to the movies.

How many years is Endgame going to hold the box office record?

I saw it late last night, and there was not a single empty seat in the house. Not even stray one in the first or last row.
