S01.E03: Of Puppies And Monsters

I don't get why the reporter didn't just go to the brother in the beginning and say the DNA test was screwed up. Then she could write the exclusive about the new test. If she waits too long no one will care about the story.

I do like that I don't know what to think about anyone on this show. I truly have no idea if Claire's speech during the interview was planned out or not. I have no idea why the sister is so creepy. I have no idea if Adam is really Adam. It keeps me guessing.

Is it wrong of me that I thought they should have let Hank keep the dog? I mean throw him out of the house that your kids are in, yes. But the guy was wrongly in prison for 10 years, he deserves a break.

Pedophiles often use animals to lure their victims. While he might have been wrongly imprisoned for 10 years, he was a sex offender, wasn't he? I've already lost track of what's real on this show.

To drag out the reveal for the fallout.  The same goes for this show waiting too long, then no one will care about the story.

Okay, I didn't think of it as a way to lure their victims. Good call, I guess.

I think his crime was indecent exposure, but they haven't been super clear about that part.

This show has me paranoid about the smallest things. Like in the flashback when the parents got the phone call in the middle of the night. John says "Nina?" and then yells "Oh my God!". Then Claire's first words were "Did they arrest somebody?". You'd THINK that a mother's first response to that would be "Did they find Adam?". I'm probably really reading too much into nothing.

That can't be the real Adam, because no teenage boy would EVER try to sneak a peak at his own naked sister. Right? Interesting, a whole mystery knitted from nothing but red herrings.

Edit: Not knowing what happened to your child and then hearing that your neighbor the "registered sex offender" (which says nothing about any danger an RSO poses -- it's just a feel-good law that accomplishes nothing) has confessed to killing him would send most parents into screaming and crying. These two took the news calmly and didnt even ask about Adam, like they already knew what happened to him, whether he was alive or not. Dad framed the neighbor, so the arrest was no surprise, just the confession. I believe the intent was to stop the search to be sure that Adam wouldn't be found. Adam asking his dad why he stopped looking for him makes me believe it really is Adam. Or is he an imposter and was just curious? I do hope it all makes sense in the end.

Maybe, maybe not. He was isolated from other kids during the years that he would have been forming romantic and sexual attachments. Plus, assuming he was sexually abused during that time, his sexual feeling are going to be messed up.

Peaking at his sister when he, presumably, hasn't been around any females for 10 years, would be expected.

AND you would think that would be the father's first question to the person on the phone! They just laid there like it was a situation where the body had already been found and now an arrest has been made, rather than what supposedly happened which was the neighour 'confessed' to killing Adam after he was arrested. So was it just sloppy writing or as we supposed to notice that the scene made no sense given what we have been told so far?

The tracking thing... A little technical background: trackers rely on GPS. To track, you need a GPS receiver. A GPS receiver needs power. This is why we don't yet have tracking implants. Pets don't have tracking implants, they have ownership microchips, so if someone finds your lost dog, a vet can scan it and find out who owns it. There are tracking pet collars available, just like there are tracking ankle bracelets that law enforcement uses on certain offenders (or for house arrest).

OK, now that I got that out of the way, I get that there's a lab that's solved the engineering problems and is about to have implantable trackers available. So it's odd the candidate mom mentioned it. Which is somewhat intriguing. I just want the older son to get his act together and take samples of his brother's and his own DNA to a lab and have them compared. Hell, send them in to a paternity test lab, or any other of hundreds of private DNA test labs (I found two within 10 miles of me, for instance.) Find out if he really is your brother once and for all.

He's pretty much the only character I'm rooting for, so it'd be nice if he was at least reasonably smart.

The reporter should have been up front. The mom is yucky. The calculating daughter is even worse. The dad also stinks, for framing the neighbor. Adam is also creepy -- definitely not because he snuck a peek at his naked sister! Just because I don't think he's Adam. I hope not, or it's boring. But in this day and age, with DNA testing easy to access (easier than dental records, apparently), it can't go on that long without the truth coming out.

ETA: Forgot about the cops. I like the Fibbie. He's funny -- interesting characterization. Chick cop is OK, nothing remarkable.

Oh, and while I felt for Hank for not getting the puppy, I think he was originally guilty only of indecent exposure. AND he needs to get to a shelter and get a puppy there! Plenty of dogs need good homes.

First thing I noticed was that Andrew McCarthy directed the episode.  Whenever an actor directs an episode, I always try to look to see if they happen to get an awesome scene that they'd might enjoy shooting; usually along the lines of getting to make out with someone or do a cool stunt.  In this case, I'm totally believing he took advantage of those puppy scenes.  I can just see the rest of the crew being like "Um, Andrew, it's take 15, I think we got it!", and he's all "No!  Need another one!  Must get more shots of me and the puppies!"

Not surprised that all that it was Willa who set-up Hank ten years ago by planting the bottle in his drawer, but I didn't predict John being involved as well.  And it looked like what set it off was Claire actually wondering if John killed Adam, and that freaked Willa out. Either way, it just continues to make me give Willa the side-eye, because if she was pulling stuff like that when she was teen, she really could have the smarts and capability to cause even more damage.

Got an answer to one of my burning questions: Claire is apparently running as a Republican!  Or was suppose to be, but it sounded like she might not get endorsed by the RNC, since she was refusing to follow their talking points.  But since her big interview has her trending on Twitter and whatnot, I guess her campaign is still in effect.

Danny already figures out that Bridey is a reporter at least, although it sounds like he's going to look past that deceit, and work with her, since he's still the only one who thinks Adam may not be Adam.  That's still up in the air, but creeping on your naked sister, is certainly going to raise flags.

So, the possible killer guy actually has a wife and a child on the way?

FBI agent guy was hilarious.  More of him, please.

OK. I'm in just for the sake of curiosity.

My big problem is that in real life the kid has to be the real Adam because everyone can see the moles on the side of his face. Either he had them or not. I'm having a lot of trouble suspending my disbelief.

Also, I haven't seen the actress playing Willa before so maybe it's just this show, but she needs makeup. Maybe they are trying to make her look nefarious. Her face just fades out into a wash. Creepy.

While I want to like this show, I can't say that I do.

I am not finding any of the characters at all likeable, except maybe the guy who was jailed for the crime and I don't really like him, just dislike him less than the others.

While I get that his false confession got the search for Adam abandoned, this guy spent years in jail for something he probably didn't do, that they pretty much framed him for, so for the family to be unsympathetic at all to him seems wrong to me.

Too many of the guys look alike so I can't keep track of who is who.

Yeah, the whole DNA thing would have made sense years ago, but now, just get the test done by a reputable lab and be done with it.

They mentioned that he was previously arrested for indecent exposure.  That could just mean that he was arrested for peeing in public.  It's been implied that he's a pedophile but I don't think there's actually any proof of this.  And I think he is by far the most sympathetic character on the show.

This was the first episode where I sympathized a little with the mom.  I think the sister is a cold bitch.

This episode was a toughie for me because I've tried to stay committed to the show and this one was all over the place.

- Too much back and forth in time.  It's not necessary to identify that it's 10 years ago if preteen sister (can't remember her name) is in the scene.  That's evident.

- Thought Andrew McCarthy with the puppies was WAYYYYYY over the top.  It was honestly repugnant.

- Listening to Claire ramble on the 20/20 show clone, I thought she committed career suicide, but no...she's the darling of the internet.  Whatev.

- Clue to show...Bridey is not all that hot.  Stop having every male fall at her feet. And what was with that outfit?  Looked like she was on her way to Funkeytown.

- Show of hands....how many of you knew...absolutely KNEW...that Adam was going to pull something out of some secret hiding place in the Chamber of Horrors?

At this point, there's so many unappealing characters that it's hard to say who is good.  Really liked Hank until this episode.  The father being involved with the cop after all this time is ridiculous.  He did a great job taking out the trash last night...that's about how interesting he is to me.  I can't put my finger on why, but I just don't think Joan Allen is the right actress for this role.  Every time she's on camera it's like a wet dishcloth slapped me in the face.  The female cop is truly awful, awfully written and the actress is just not making her believable for me.  Would love for the reporter to wind up dead...hate the character and do NOT want to see her hook up with the alcoholic son.  Probably the best character IMO is the daughter.  She has a very different look...not pretty, not ugly, but you can't take your eyes off her.  I'm marginally rooting for the older son, Danny, but him running to the reporter's house to give her a story dropped him in my view by several notches.  When he found out she was a reporter, he should have dunked her head under the water for a few minutes.

Mostly because we hear John mention that Hank was arrested for exposure or whatever (I assumed it was drunk peeing or something inane), and then Hank sorta ups the creep factor after the reveal.  I get being super creepy after begin in prison for the better part of 10 years as a convicted child-killer.  But he was super creepy back in the day too.

And frankly, the super creepy neighbor when I was growing up had all the parents talking about him.  And us kids might have spoken to him outside, but no way were we allowed to or comfortable with entering his home/thinking him of a friend.

One thing that stood out for me this episode (alright, several things):

1. Yes, the dad and daughter framed Hank by putting that bottle in his house, but hasn't the detective lady been saying all this time that Hank confessed? That's why they stopped looking for Adam, because Hank confessed to killing him? How did Hank get the payout from the state when he confessed to murder (even if he didn't do it) in the first place?

2. It really doesn't matter if pockmarked dude had that truck crushed, there are still going to be records that he owned it. And it will probably look even more suspicious to the cops that he had it destroyed.

3. Are all of the kids still living at home? I get Adam, but are the grown daughter and son still living with mom and dad?

4. Do the writers expect us to believe that detective lady never once listened to the anonymous 911 call that let her into Hank's house?

From the recap:

I can't stand a pretty-boy cast in the role of an all-day layabout alcoholic. If he's been drinking every day for a decade, he should look a lot worse, not cruising the bars leading with his chiseled nose and his frat swoop.

Bwah! And yet he remains the main reason why I'm still watching this show, sadly.

3. Are all of the kids still living at home? I get Adam, but are the grown daughter and son still living with mom and dad?

I think Danny had been living somewhere else but moved back home recently because there was a line in the pilot about having him "back." I assume the daughter still lives there because she is essentially her mother's personal assistant.

I agree the scene where they got the phone call in the middle of the night was either horribly written and directly or indicative of the characters actually knowing Adam's true fate. And I doubt both of them did.

I didn't catch what the connection was between the lab making the microchips and the family - do they own it or something? Wouldn't that come out in the campaign?

I just wrote about this in the episode 1 thread. The moles on the face of Adam as a child are on his left cheek. The adult Adam the moles are on his right cheek. It is making me crazy that no one in his family or police would notice. I thought maybe they were ignoring it as "close enough" for casting purposes and we wouldn't notice. Yet it was making me question Adam from the first episode and now with other evidence compiling, I am questioning if it is the same kid too.

I think that DNA and microchipping lab has millions and millions to make in state and federal contracts if The Governor wins, especially on a platform of tracking sex offenders with a GPS chip. I think they have motive to make everyone believe this is her son. They are involved. Not sure how much the Mom and Daughter know. To me, the mom does not seem as if she knows. She seems traumatized, yet eager to use it as a platform to move forward. Rationalization? Probably. But I don't think she is aware Adam is not Adam. The daughter... I don't know....

It's been implied that he's a pedophile but I don't think there's actually any proof of this.

Hank had child porn on his computer. That's what the detective used to get him to confess. She played "good cop" by telling him she understood this is just how he was born but that a jury would see that stuff and just be sure he was guilty and sentence him to death, so the best thing for him to do was confess. And the child porn was definitely his because when confronted with it, his big defense was that he'd never acted on it but just liked to watch. Personally I don't feel too bad for Hank. Yes, he may have been innocent of Adam's murder but again, the man engaged in child porn; a crime that alone WOULD have gotten him at least 10 years if caught.

I feel like many posters seem to have completely forgotten that scene, since I keep reading these "he was only convicted of indecent exposure which could have meant anything" comments. Again, no, he was engaging in child porn which definitely puts him on the path of pedophilia. Coupled with the fact that Adam was coming around to his house without Adam's family knowing and I don't buy Hank as some great victim. I do think Hank was likely grooming Adam before he disappeared. Personally my two theories are that Hank did kill Adam and the impostor kid is now there but he won't exactly say the kid is the impostor because that'll make the truth come out.

Or, as others believe, Adam was held along with the impostor kid by the creepy guy, he was killed or died at some point and the kid is taking over his life. My guess is they probably bonded being trapped in that place. Okay, I do have a third theory that creepy sister might have killed Adam and so she knows the kid is an impostor but won't say because again, she wouldn't want the truth to come out but I don't really buy that. Personally, I'm enjoying this show. I'm certainly enjoying way more than Quantico that I'd so looked forward to and checked out of after four episodes.

Obviously the police stopped looking for Adam once Hank confessed, but I wonder if anyone actually corroborated his confession. I am guessing no, which means they need to take a good hard look at their police procedures. I mean, they obviously never found Adam's body, so I wonder what Hank said he did with it or if they just took his word for it. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy (both police work and possibly the writing, depending on how everything shakes out).

I know, exactly. It was still registered with the state! It has a VIN number! (or just VIN, the N stands for number...)

Not only that, but why not ask the current employees of the company if they recall a guy with BAD POCKMARKS on his face? It' s a pretty distinguishing characteristic that wouldn't fade with time. I was also surprised when the detective jumped to that assumption, without verifying that's what the kid even meant by "holes in his face." Show him some pics on the Internet. Make sure he's thinking of pockmarks and not big pores, acne scars, birth defects, or some other deformity.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the pseudo-Adam turns out to be in on this with pockmark dude. Or pockmark dude turns out to be innocent, because why not? Seems the boy has a key to the hideout. Or something.

Do we know how much time Hank was supposed to serve? Because if he confessed they must have given him some kind of deal that was better than life in prison.

I forgot about the porn, but I do think having child pornography is a lesser crime than actually molesting a child. If I was a juror on a case where the defendant had child porn I wouldn't use that as a deciding factor. I think Hank's probably not the brightest person or didn't have a good lawyer advising him because confessing when the police didn't even have a body was probably a bad idea. Unless he actually did kill Adam and we are dealing with an impostor now.

Perhaps the mom & dad are so silent in bed after the phone call because they both know that dad is involved in the disappearance of Adam, and the daughter is aware of it - hence her hiding of the bottle in Hank's underwear drawer.  Maybe.

I don't see it as  lesser crime. People out there are violating children and putting it on the internet so that  he can get his jollies off and work up to doing it himself and maybe posting it online? It's just as bad IMO. They better hope that I'm not on their jury.

People who violate the children and post the porn are just as bad, yes, but, someone who just watches it isn't as bad as someone who physically assaults children. The physical contact is what makes it worse. Which is not to say they all aren't horrible, I'm just saying that if you are ranking crimes just watching porn is preferable to what else has been suggested.  However, someone being a sicko who likes looking at children isn't automatically a killer. People should be arrested for the crimes they commit.

The whole thing kind of falls apart when you think more about it.  They would want a detailed recitation of the crime as part of his confession, along with knowledge of where the body was (or at least where he disposed of it).  Even police under pressure to solve the crime would want to be able to verify his claims in some way, rather than just taking his word.

And I'm not even getting into the sheer goofiness of the FBI intuiting the affair between the dad and the cop simply based on one interaction between them that he saw.

I have been watching the show and actually like it a great deal. But, Adam was gone for 10 years! 10 years! And his homecoming really lacked the emotional meltdown that would have been real if this was not a scripted tv show.

I mean: you think your son is dead and he is back from the dead and a detective tells you to "shut it down" and you are able to do that? And the father doesn't even embrace his son who is back from the dead. In this episode they all sit there like a bunch of vacuous stiffs during that interview.

Also, what's with this Biotech thing? Is there a scheme to get the company listed on NASDAQ? And what's with Bridey and her mysterious character? And what's with the key? is it the key to where the real Adam is being held?

I hate them all, especially the baby-faced Eli Gold daughter.   I know the show would like us to believe in a family where the concentration of freshly-squeezed dysfunction is 100% but I just can't.

Moral of the story: dogs will love you no matter who you are.

Is it just me, or is the theme music a rip-off of the Daredevil theme on Netflix?   It's messing me up.

First episode, i got a bit of Brat Farrar vibe. i still have it.

Still, assuming Adam is really Adam, peeking at is sister is easily explained, he doesn't really feel her as a sister, having been away so long.

It's strange to watch this show in parallel with the british one, Thirteen.

Agreed about the sex offenders list. You can get on it for indecent exposure or for turning 18 before your significant other, or for taking a picture of your child that someone else thought was inappropriate. Those are not reasons to get your own private Big Brother tether.

But in any case, such a law would spend a lot of time in court if it were even passed.

I expect there will turn out to be a law enforcement connection.

Oh, and as for a main character directing, that's always seemed strange to me. After all the director's job is to stand outside the action and make sure everything's working together. how can you do that and be part of the action at the same time?

I may be filing in blanks to make this all make sense, but I thought Hank's previous conviction was an indecent exposure/public lewdness thing related to getting off in his car or something and that his porn was barely legal boys (not actual child porn) which the police used to emphasize how he would appear to the public and a jury. The police didn't actually have anything they could arrest him for, but they made him fully aware of how society would treat him if he were let loose.

I have an idea I don't think anyone has posted--it really IS Adam  AND he is in  with the kidnapper because he got turned, or got told over and over that your family deserted you, etc.

I continue to like the show and think it's fun to come up with various theories. I do think some scenes could have been written better. Random thoughts: I agree the scenes with the parents getting the call made no sense. Your son is missing, the cops call and say an arrest has been made. You would jump out of bed and ask "Is my son alive?" "Is my son dead", there would be a lot of emotion. This couple just went back to bed with zero emotion (they did show the mom staring off into space).

It's a bit hard to believe that a young girl like the daughter was at the time would think to plant evidence on a neighbor. She would more likely be distraught and clinging to her parents, not hatching plots.

It won't make any sense to me if the family somehow plotted to murder or kidnap their own child. They obviously have issues as all families do, but nothing will make me believe they wanted to randomly kill their own child/brother.

It did make sense to me that the brother went back to see the reporter. His feelings might have been hurt, but he really wants to know if Adam is his brother and strongly suspects he isn't.

The FBI guy immediately knowing the cop had an affair with the dad is just silly. I can never stand when people magically know things by looking at people.

I'm not sure what the show wants us to think about Hank. We see him be framed, now we see him and his happiness with the puppies. Is he a bad guy? Along the same lines, with a child missing, no way would the police just accept his confession without looking for a the body or looking more into the crime. Families would still want some closure. He also would be questioned again as to why he confessed, what does he know about the crime, etc.

The daughter is annoying and creepy and once again I'm irritated by always making the crazy person a Christian.

There's an implication here that Willa and Adam (or "Adam") are in cahoots pulling off this whole scam. But as the story progresses and virtually everyone becomes a suspect one way or another it's hard to know how many red herrings they're going to throw at us.

and that his porn was barely legal boys (not actual child porn)

Obviously said porn was not shown to us since this is network TV, nor were any specifics made about it. I don't think there was any ambiguity about the contents on the laptop though - it was child pornography, not something that might or might not be interpreted as such. This story isn't playing in nuance.

I stand corrected. I still don't get why Hank would confess to killing a child to avoid the public finding out about his porn collection, though. Every news clip about the kidnapping and alleged murder refer to him as a sex offender, so all he did was subject himself to a longer sentence than he would have served for the child pornography possession charges. It didn't help his reputation at all.

This part did not makes sense at all to me either.  .

And wasn't it 30 yrs? Which beats the death penalty or L w/o P if someone actually did it, but yikes...

Maine doesn't have the death penalty, so I guess he was trying to beat life in prison? But he's not super young, 30 years doesn't give him a lot of time (assuming prison decreases life expectancy).

Still, assuming Adam is really Adam, peeking at is sister is easily explained, he doesn't really feel her as a sister, having been away so long.

I thought it was weird that she appeared to be about to take a shower, but in the next scene it looks like she put back on the outfit she had been wearing before, along with makeup and heels to go and speak to Adam.

I was thinking that Hank felt like the evidence was such that he was going to be convicted regardless, so he chose to plead to the crime for a reduced sentence.
