I think the reason Trump is slowly going crazy, as Joe alludes to with his stories of Trump staff calling him concerned about his behavior, is that he knows the investigations are going to get into his business dealings as much as they are into Flynn et al colluding with the Russians.  Slowly we are going to find out that the Russians do have shit on him, that in exchange for the loans, he has been laundering money thru the casinos and other real estate deals for Russians.

Here's hoping that when J & M come back they focus more on these types of issues.

Which leads me to suspect that there are quite a few more stories, on both sides.

I agree!!  I think the truth lies somewhere in between Trumps tweet and their story.  Joe denies everything but why were they anywhere near Maralago to begin with?  Mika said she went there to possibly get an interview with him which she did not get.   She also admitted to having her chin done.

This situation is a result of their cozying up to Trump for ratings during the campaign and then trying to get the scoop from his inner circle so they could be "first to report".   Joe says Trump is obsessed with the show but it seems like he is obsessed with the fact that Trump may be watching.   He even looks into the camera and talks to Trump at times.   Their hostility has gotten so personal lately it's uncomfortable to watch.  Trump can't quit them but they can't quit him either.

Joe is a famewhore and he will no doubt enjoy their temporary elevated "celebrity" status from all of this.   Mika doesn't mind it either because she thinks Joe is a rockstar and had to make the point that TMZ iss following her around.

Donny was on fire, wasn't he? So was Elise! Those two would be an efficient team if they decided to prowl alleys and such (or Camp David). I'd LMAO while they were chasing his ass over hill and through dale.

This national nightmare has to end. Joe and Mika sat on some big info for a long time. Wondering if they ever would have shared, without the tweets.

Mika & Joe should have disclosed the lunch at the White House sooner.

At some point the show has to get back to discussing policies.

mika  did not disclose her chin tweak when the shows aired

I'm so confused. (Damn you, Paxil!) We don't know what they didn't roll over for?

The story about Roger Ailes rescuing Mika from having her affair with Joe published in the NY Post just after Ailes death. No one could figure out why Mika was not as critical of Ailes as other cable news hosts.

Ailes saved Mika.

I don't think she's under any obligation to tell us she had any work done.   She only brought it up this morning to clear up the bloody face/face lift remark.  Maybe she mentioned it to Melania or something when they were at Mar A Lago over NYE, and that's how Trump knew about it.  It sounds like she was telling friends, etc. because she was so pleased with how it turned out.

And I did love Mika basically saying ' I just lost my dad, my mom had 2 heart attacks, and my daughter recently lost a close friend. Do you think I'm worried about you? Bitch, please' to Trump.

Agreed, this was my favorite part.

Willie did a great job during the first hour. I loved when he drily said, "I expect we have a lot of new viewers today..."

When they were talking about how Trump clearly has some issues with women, it occurred to me that it is amazing that he made it through the general election without making such comments about Hillary Clinton.

And when they showed the Huckabee Sanders footage of her whole-wheat defending this shit, forgive me but I thought, lady, if you didn't work for Trump can you imagine what he would say about *your* physical appearance? (Who knows, maybe he even does say stuff behind her back.)

ETA: Joe has responded to Trump's response on his Twitter and it sounds like Joe saved the receipts. Ooh boy.

I love Willie. He is professional, calm, and eloquent. The show is always better when he is at the helm.

Donny was really letting Trump have it. It was a little over the top, but I agreed with him and enjoyed the outrage since I feel the same way. The others tried to calm him down, and I understood their point, but I appreciated his honesty.

I didn't see last half of the show. Did anyone call out the disgrace aka FLOTUS? God it pains me to refer to her as that. Yuck.

Also, lordy Harold Ford plays on my last nerve. Dump him.

All in all I think Joe and Mika did a fine job and prove they will hold their ground, not back down.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/how-joe-scarborough-and-mika-brzezinski-kept-their-relationship-secret-so-long

Here's a Daily Beast article that has the story Mika had Ailes stop in the Post. (I misspoke above saying it was going to be on Fox). This is about the engagement but at the bottom brings up the Post story.

This was  almost four years ago, if it's true that Joe gave them the story about Baldwin being cancelled if they didn't run the story about Joe & Mika.

What is the deal with women being pals with Ailes?  Even Rachel has admitted she asked him to critique her on air style when her show started, and has said she regrets that all the bad stuff came out about him.

I find that hard to swallow. Hey I know you sexually harass every woman that comes within 20 feet of you, but could you give me some tips on how I'm doing?  How about, you are gross and I'd rather suck than ask you for advice.

I hope Trump keeps pushing it and we get some delicious receipts this weekend.

Also why is he now publicly admitting he has control over that tabloid ? I really believe he could be baited into inadvertently admitting to colluding with Russia/obstruction/whatever if triggered by someone he has a  vendetta with.

The idea that the President of the United States spends time feuding with hosts of a morning show is mind boggling.

I generally don't like calling people out for their physical appearance but when Donny spat out, Donald Trump is physically repulsive, I cheered a little.

When they played the clip of Nicolle telling the  women in the Trump administrstion to speak out or resign, and everyone agreed that would never happened, it bummed me out because it is true. And I think part of it is that some women may not want to do it because they themselves don't want to be called ugly or have dispersions cast on their appearance. But you know what? People like Trump use "ugly" as their go-to insult for women....even beautiful ones. It means nothing except "I hate you." They evilly know how society has driven in our heads that physical beauty is a paramount attribute so they know it pushes buttons. Read any message board on Tom Brady - and you will find some jerks living in their mom's basement calling Gisele Bundchen ugly.

I cannot believe that fucking idiot Trump replied to Joe and Mika's blackmail story of Trump, White House staff, and The Enquirer trying to force Morning Joe to stop being mean.  His Tweet is a Presidential document, and in it he affirms that he did not attempt blackmail.  If this was Obama or Clinton, there would be a Congressional investigation and an independent counsel, and Fox News and the right wing world would be volcanically erupting in outrage to prove the Tweet a lie and impeach.
I hope every question to the South Korean PM today is about whether or not he respects women, and as a world leader would he start a spat with a morning zoo TV show.   I hope they ask him, "Do you respect Donald Trump?  Why?"  If Trump wants war with the media, give it to him.

Because it is wholly irrelevant. The point of the revelation today is that it is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES threatening/blackmailing two cable news hosts in retaliation for unfavorable coverage. If it's true, it's beyond the pale.

That is entirely different from someone asking for a personal favor from a media executive at a rival network.

I agree with all of this. The only thing I like to add is that what he did is not just idiotic, today or whenever that whole thing started. It's a criminal offense. Blackmail. And because he is not just a normal person but the president and tried to use it as a way to silence political opponents who happen to be members of the press.....

Something tells me that neither of the hosts will have a relaxing vacation. The AG whose jurisdiction includes NYC must have already or will for sure contact them.

One thing that did bother me about Mika's response today was that she repeatedly said that Trump was easily "played". That didn't seem like the right terminology to me. According to definition, that's like pretending to be someone's friend, and then turning on them, making them look foolish, or being lied to and taking advantage of. That doesn't seem to fit the situation. I can see the word "goaded" being used, which she also said, but not "played". Does anyone else agree? Am I being too picky?

Look at this, one of those people is Kushner. I assume this is a White House "damage control" leak. Skipped through it, basically it says Joe S. and Kushner were talking, Joe S. complained to Kushner about NE and Kushner said go talk to Trump. Then goes on to denying the whole WH harassment thing. I wonder to what purpose if there are text receipts apparently also seen by MSNBC execs.

I didn't realize Mika's mom had had two heart attacks since Dr. Z died. That's rough.

Anyway, it looks like Mika has a lot of defenders in the media and in the government. I thought Nicolle's reaction was very elegant and heartfelt.

Donnie just called Trump a pig and said he is a hypocrite because he criticizes women for their appearance while being repulsive to look at himself.

I can't believe a president has brought our country to this level of discourse. Sad!

I'm "young" enough to remember all the lamentations in the media and elsewhere about President Clinton bringing the country to such a trashy level.  "How will we explain to the kids about the real definition of sex?"  Some even said that the Starr Report read like a piece of low-rent pornography with its references to cigars and such.

I have to say that Meek-a has impressed me with how she has handled this situation.  Now, if only she would take such a stand when her fiance is belittling her on national TV...

No, not too picky.  She also made the comment that she knew the minute she made the comment about his small hands that he would be triggered.  Mika and Joe are not innocent in any of this as I think they seee it as a game.    I just heard a 3 minute montage of Mika's nasty comments toward Trump and when they string it all together, she's been pretty vicious.   None of it was constructive policy commentary, just a bunch of name calling.   Not condoning his tweeting back at her.  Just saw an article that calls all three of them out for acting like children and that about sums up how I feel.

This could explain the real reason Joe and Meek-a jumped off the Jared-Kushner-is-Great bandwagon.

It has long fascinated me that the alt-White House has been leaking like a poorly constructed sieve to Joe and anyone else in media who will listen.  Yet, none of those people working there have the guts to stand up to their fuhrer, tell him to fuck off and/or get the fuck out of there.  That's why it's difficult to feel any sympathy or empathy for anyone working there.  As has been pointed out repeatedly by Joe and others on the panel--those people chose to work there and knew what they were signing up for.

One thing is for sure.  When Drumpf & Co. finally get out of there, the people's House will need to be fumigated, smudged, and prayed over.  It's as if they have the Midas touch in reverse.  Every thing that man, his family and hangers-on touch turns to absolute shit.

Wow, this story is suddenly getting bigger. Phone records of who called who may not prove much, but if Joe has incriminating texts from White House staff, that is entirely different. The NBC guy seemed to back this up with 'contemporaneous texts' tweet (even though I am not too sure what that word means).

Also, it was Joe and Mika who brought up the Enquirer story today, and in doing so they had to know that this would dredge up a negative story about them that had previously come and gone with little notice. They must have been willing to face the negative personal consequences in order to bring this to light, and I doubt they would have not done this unless their side of the story was the accurate one.

What makes me doubt the WH version (besides the texts) is the fact that this was after the engagement. At that point NE and all the other gossip tabloids have written about the supposed affair ad nauseam for years I remember several pieces in 2016/2017 who implied she had cheated or both have, they were already out in the public as a couple officially. What did they have to fear ?

My mom has stopped watching Morning Joe, but was disappointed she missed Donny's rant, so I transcribed it for her. Here it is, in case anyone missed it. I included Elise Jordan's response to the story, too, because I thought she was good. There was a lot of cross talk going on at a couple of points, so I'm sure I don't have everything verbatim.

Quote

Willie Geist: Donny, you’ve been critical of a guy you’ve known for a long time -- Donald Trump and now Pr*sident Trump.

Donny Deutsch: Yeah.

Willie Geist: Were you surprised by what you saw, yesterday?

Donny Deutsch: No. First of all, you know, he picked the wrong school yard to come into, I have to tell you this. You know, I’m not an employee of NBC, so I can -- I’m gonna go thug here, okay. I’m sorry, because Mika’s a friend of ours. She’s a good woman. She’s a great mom, and he’s a pig. He’s a vulgar pig.

And I find what’s ironic about -- you know, Michelle Obama says, “When they go high, we go -- uh -- when they go low we go...” [gestures to indicate going high]. Uh, when he goes low, I’m going low. You guys will take the high road. I’m going to take the low road.

He’s physically disgusting to look at. I mean, that’s what I find ironic about the way he always starts to go after other people’s physical attributes.

So, beyond the fact that he’s obviously not well, and Joe and Mika have a great column out. He’s clearly -- forget obviously, obvious misogynism [sic], the obvious vulgarity, the obvious stupidity -- he’s not mentally okay.

And -- this is a man with the nuclear codes. We have to start paying attention to it. And? He’s disgusting to look at. I know -- everyone’s going to say, “Donny...”

Katy Kay: I think that’s irrelevant.

Willie Geist: But I don’t...

Donny Deutsch: No, no.

Elise Jordan: [Unintelligible] On so many levels...

Donny Deutsch: No, no. Let me tell you why that’s not irrelevant. Because enough is enough. Enough is enough with this disgusting, vulgar man. And to talk about women that way? And the irony is that -- I can’t -- you’re -- you’re -- you physically look like you do? Beyond the stupidity of it -- you’re a pig. You are -- you are a -- you are a bully, and you are doing disgusting things to this country.

Willie Geist: But Donny, doesn’t it again lower -- again...

Donny Deutsch: Yes. I’m...

Willie Geist: The discourse -- to say...

Donny Deutsch: Yes. For me yes...

Willie Geist: ...What you said about his physical physical appearance?

Donny Deutsch: You know what? It absolutely does. And maybe it’s time that we all stop tippy-toeing. I am taking the low ground, here. You know what? He goes after a woman that way -- he goes after a friend that way. He is a vulgar human being. He’s vulgar to look at. He’s disgusting -- the way he behaves himself as the Pr*sident. And I’m sorry. I probably won’t be on this show again. But...sorry.

Willie Geist: Put the shades back on. [That was an allusion to a sight gag at the top of the show; when Geist introduced him, Deutsch was wearing sunglasses and cracked that he'd just had some work done and was a little sensitive about it.]  Elise, your reaction?

Elise Jordan: I was just absolutely horrified. It’s surprising, because not very much about Donald Trump surprises me anymore, given his complete lack of character, integrity, and his utter unseemliness -- occupying the Oval Office. But to launch an attack like that on a woman, just because you don’t like what she’s saying about you -- and there’s something about smart, strong, substantive women, that really gets under Donald Trump’s skin.

And to just make up this complete, strange lie -- which is quite creative, because I sit by Mika a couple of days a week, and if she’s gotten work, I want to know who the plastic surgeon is, because there was no sign whatsoever, and give me his number.

Willie Geist: Well, that was one of the factual inaccuracies in his tweet, but I’m going to let Mika entirely address that in just a few minutes....

Another point is that this is not an accusation that Joe just threw out mid-conversation. It was first mentioned in the Washington Post article that Joe and Mika wrote together, so they would have discussed the impact of bringing this to light before writing about it. I am sure that if there was no truth to it, they would have decided it would not be worth dealing with the consequences.

Rush Limbaugh disclosed today that Trump told him about Mika & Joe's weird behavior at Mar A Largo at New Years . They called Trump demanding to hang out for 3 days.

I don't exactly think of Limbaugh and Trump as arbiters of truth (I put Hannity into this category too).

Who knows what the truth of the New Years events are, but the photographic evidence seems to back up Joe Mika more than Trump.

Regarding the National Enquirer story, we will not know for sure about that either, unless Joe really does have incriminating texts and he releases them/

I always wonder what precipitated all of this man's emotional problems with women.  Did/does he have serious Mommy issues?  Was he scorned by a teen-age love interest at a crucial age? (Maybe because of little "hands").  Was he intimidated by his first wife (who I've read was smart and spunky.  Don't know if that's true).

I thought the lovebirds handled the whole sordid mess pretty well this morning.  Mika sure got hefty praise heaped upon her by all the panelists, so either they were toeing the party line or she's a lot more formidable than she lets on.  Which is ironic for someone who constantly touts women's worth.

Well I see Comeys testimony taught Trump and Rush about contemporaneous accounts being valid talking point/evidence

Mika and Joe are no angels and they have probably done a few dirty tricks in their time to favor their careers. However, given their jobs, calling Trump and getting an invite to Mar a Lago to get an interview is not a bad thing. There is a long history of journalists and presidents being friends. And in this case they were friends before the run for Pres. what if any of your friends ran for and won the Presidency?  I know I'd think I had an in. Might even give him friendly interviews on my blog. Until he started acting crazy and harming the country. Then I'd call him out strongly on that and be angry and sad about my friend.

We've said plenty about Mika and Joe over the years but this whole situation is crazy. I think moreso cuz Trump is batshit not M and J.

Sorry, still irrelevant. Not saying this is good or even ethical behavior. But Trump is president of the United States, Ailes was not, he was a private citizen. They cover Trump as part of their jobs. They didn't cover Ailes.

And who knows, maybe MSNBC did reprimand her.

And when they showed the Huckabee Sanders footage of her whole-wheat defending this shit, forgive me but I thought, lady, if you didn't work for Trump can you imagine what he would say about *your* physical appearance? (Who knows, maybe he even does say stuff behind her back.)

It occurred to me that Melissa McCarthy could play Sarah Huckabee Sanders *and* Sean Spicer equally well. on SNL. I'd sure love to see that.

Trump is preoccupied with a feud with minor media personalities instead of more important policy issues.

He lets the likes of Bannon, McConnell and Tyan set the policies and agenda.

of all the apologists for Trump, the "religious" women bug me the most. Huckabee is just like her father, the bible is all except for his friends, they can do what ever they want and he won't criticize them.

I don't watch Morning Joe all the time they have so many things they talk about that are so not important and are spoken of as truth, not allegations no matter how ridiculous they are.. well, anyway, I have watched the last few weeks, to see how Joe is almost turning reasonable from some of his former positions.  I thought when they were talking about the national inquirer they were talking about his intern in Florida, the affair is pretty much out there for a long long time now. No shock there. Do I know who is telling the truth, factually no, but there is the over all ignorance of the tweet, the whole trump doing more damage to himself aspect.  I understand why Mika and Joe did not go on vacation the other day, they are media stars, if they went away yesterday, they would have lost some publicity ground. Have to soak up the limelight while you  can. Anyway, I was talking to someone today about how most talk shows have to show "both sides"  when sometimes there is only one side - do they have people on to defend Stalin and his gulags or talk about the brilliance of Kim Jung Il? No, But sometimes something is jsut wrong and you should not make anyone defend it. I believe this tweet was one of them. And I liked that the show did not have the great Trump defenders, as a requisite, at least not in the sections I saw.

It's not irrelevant. Mika was distraught & was crying when she spoke to Rogers Ailes in order to cover up for her affair with Joe. She offered the Baldwin cancellation scoop to placate the NY Post reporter.

Its not ethical to disclose her employers tv scheduling changes in exchange to protect her 0wn affair with Joe.

MSNBC should have reprimanded her

Mika should have proudly disclosed her affair on the show! She could have bragged to other women that sleeping with your co host is the best way to succeed in Cable TV:)

This has nothing to do with Roger Ailes and a story he may or may not have wanted to run.

Once again: This is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES engaging in sleazy, petty, blackmail in exchange for favorable coverage.

Until he actually delivers the goods, I'm putting Joe's claim of having texts and emails on the shelf next to "Comey had better hope there are no tapes!"

If it had not been for the fact that Joe said he passed the texts on to MSNBC execs, and one of the NSNBC execs seemed to back him up on twitter, I would have agreed with this.

Exactly.  I know Daily Beast had it in their article, but where did they get it? Have Joe & Mika confirmed this?  The article says "sources familiar with the situation".    Was it someone at MSNBC?  A friend?   And the story they traded was Alec Baldwin's show being cancelled?  Wow, that's about as shocking as Greta Van Susteren being cancelled.  Who didn't see that coming down Fifth Avenue and who even cared?    That's not exactly earth shattering gossip.

Also, sordid, not sordid, care, not care Joe & Mika are private citizens and we can judge them and snark away, but what they did was between them, their families, spouses etc.  I'm not saying it's right or that they don't drive me crazy, but if it comes down to what they did, vs. what Trump has pulled to intimidate them, I'm siding with Joe & Mika.  This time.

Trump forgets that he's not in Manhattan anymore. DC plays with live ammo.

Does he really think that Joe wouldn't keep track of all the stuff the WH was doing re this Enquirer thing? And wouldn't talk to NBC lawyers?  You aren't dealing with tabloid reporters and bimbos Donald. This is the big time. And you are not cut out for it.

Heh heh, maybe: "One eye is looking at me and one eye is looking for me." Or: "She flaps her left arm while she lies." (Seriously, that arm gets me, every time.)

Trump was not President in 2013

We're talking about two different stories.

The one in 2013 where Mika allegedly called Ailes and Joe gave the gossip reporter at the Post a tip about Alec Baldwin, and the recent one  in the Enquirer, that was just happening in the last couple months.

We're all talking about the recent one, in which the WH was involved, not the 2013 one.

That makes it even worse. Joe and Mika have accused the President of blackmail, a crime. They claim to have evidence to back up their claim. They can either forward that evidence to the appropriate law enforcement authority, present it to the public or sit on it and ride the accusation to ratings increases.

My guess is option three.

Extortion is a crime.
Using a business connections to squeeze people is being an asshole.  "Be nice or I'll gossip" isn't criminal, per se.  They accused him of nothing, by the way.
How is it cynical that they kept a private matter private, until they decided not to?  You could also look at the same situation, and see two people trying to maintain dignity, and, at the same time, gather leverage against a powerful opponent.

MSNBC had a legal expert on who said that if Trump did demand they call and apologize to kill the NE story, it could break federal law and be considered extortion.   Joe tweeting that he has the receipts--who knows, Joe and Mika save America?    They were talking about it being possible that Mueller could expand his investigation to include extortion as well as obstruction of justice.
