When a dead body is found in the woods, Mulder and Scully are called in to investigate whether it was an animal attack, a serial killer or just maybe a strange creature as described by eyewitnesses. Twenty minutes in I'm not liking the writing on this one at all.  Where's the brooding darkness?  What happened to the cynical sarcasm?  Stop this unfunny sitcom, please.

 

Well, okay, now that it's over, but you could have warned me it would be better in the end.  Still, this run needs more grounding before going satirical.

This reminds me of the Jose Chung episode. Did anyone else catch the headstones when Mulder was talking to the WereMonster? There was one for Kim Manners, who used to work on the original show, and another that said "For Jack Hardy", who worked on one of the movies.

The pervy motel manager checking out Mulder.

"This is how I like my Mulder." "So you believe me?" "No! You're batcrap crazy!"

Every person in town ingesting some type of mood-altering substance.

The overwrought musical cues.

Gillian Anderson saying, "Guys don't send me pictures of their junk anymore." 

I don't remember much after that, I may have passed out.

 

Immediate Top 5 episode.

Anytime you start off with Tyler Labine huffing paint, you know you're in for a good one.

 

I don't know the actors from anything else, just that he and the redhead huffing paint are the same actors who played stoner kids during the series' original run -- in Quagmire ("Dude, you made me drop my toad") and War of The Coprophages ("Something tells me it's more than my mind you guys are interested in expanding").

I loved it too, it was just so funny.  I liked the way all the tropes were inverted, and the fact that the guy (Murray from FLight of the Concords?) was so in character that he slurped his soda like a lizard.  I don't know why, but the Peeping Tom set-up just was so over the top it was perfect.  Also perfect - the really cheesy monster make up.

I floved this episode. I alwayd enjoyed the wacky episodes but, this was extra special. We had a role reversal with Scully being the believer and Mulder being the skeptic who so desperately wanted to believe. I loved how Scully reverted to form as soon as Mulder did.

One thing that confused me, I didn't understand Scully's comment about being immortal.

I think I would have liked it better without the transgender forced lines & the Scully porn. Just stupid. But the transformation story was brilliant. And the poor human didn't even get a chance to tell his side Lol.

Was the hotel clerk drinking rubbing alcohol?!

Poor GA is going to get some x-rated tweets after this.

I've been bursting for a week to be able to talk about this episode with more than one person.

 

"This is how I like my Mulder."

"So you're agreeing with me?"

"No, you're bat crap crazy."

 

I was getting annoyed that we were spending so much Scullyless time with Mulder and the Were-Monster at the graveyard, and then was about to get myself all into a lather that Mulder was going to have to burst in and save her, when ... Scully has saved herself, apprehended the killer, and helped herself to the dog. 

 

God, I love this episode.  All the callbacks to prior episodes, and all the great commentary on the human condition.

Another thing, I think part of the problem is that this is a different world thanks (or, no thanks) to the Internet. Plus, Mulder needs to figure out if he's coming or going, retired or not.

Plus, other than her breasts, was Scully even in this episode?

I can't decide if it was awful or brilliant..

Objectively, I'm not sure, but whatever it was, I had fun and enjoyed it lots. DD was very good in that one-sided hotel conversation with Scully.

And I missed last week's episode and haven't yet caught up, but did we know that Mulder's ringtone is the X-Files theme? Ha!

I liked that Scully took care of business at animal control, but I would have liked to have seen how that happened. I'm not sure the 2 seconds of suspense as we followed Mulder from the graveyard was worth it. On the other hand, this episode was almost entirely from Mulder's POV, really.

Loved it! But now I know what it would be like if Dr. Seuss had written an episode of The X-Files.

 

I choose to believe that Tyler Labine was playing the very same stoner as in "The War of the Coprophages" (an episode directed by Kim Manners, as it happens).

 

I also laughed at the return of another well-known guest star: the red Speedo.

 

Was the motel manager really drinking rubbing alcohol? Yikes.

 

One thing that confused me, I didn't understand Scully's comment about being immortal.

 

It may be a reference to the episode "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," written by Carter and Darin Morgan, wherein Mulder and Scully encounter a man claiming a psychic gift for foretelling others' deaths. One of his predictions appears to be that Mulder will die as a result of autoerotic asphyxiation; at another point in the story, when Scully asks him to tell her how she will die, he only answers "You don't."

I love the Stoners. Glad to see them back.

 

Yes, Scully might be immortal. 

 

The immortal photographer ( Geoffrey Lewis) gave her his life essence in one of the episodes "Tithonis."

To me Scully felt off in this episode..She didn't seem like Scully.  The best comedy episodes were ones that felt like an X-File but had humor. Sadly, this seemed like Benny Hill with a bit of Tao.

 

And someone please tell the writers that gay and transgender jokes are not edgy anymore. I feel like I'm back in 2012 when I hear that.

 

I found parts of it great but a lot was way too camp. Wish I loved it as much as most of you did.

A funny episode. I like funny episodes.

A story too crazy for even Mulder. I thought this day would never come.

I laughted at almost everything. Gus story was hilarious "I don't want to wake up and go to work tomorrow".

I loved when the animal control guy tried to tell his story and he got shut down,

And there was that episode where the day kept replaying until she (and Mulder) survived because it was fated to happen.

 

Does Scully think she's immortal? I doubt it. As for myself? I want to believe.

Callback to rarely-drinking Mulder - check

Monsters who initally seem evil bad Monsters, but are really misunderstood victims  - check

Darin Morgan's underlying commentary on humanity that I agree with - check!

Proof that Scully is indeed sexy and does have sex though CC tried to bury this - most assured CHECK!

Callback to Scully being immortal - check!

Skeezy motel with strange creepy happenings in it - check

Queequag 2.0 - check!

This was fantastic! Loved how they turned the monster trope on it's head, and all the references to past episodes. It looked like the name of the motel had "Motor Lodge" in it and I was hoping for the Sam Houston Motor Lodge. Scully needs to keep the dog, she seemed to adore Queequeg back in the day.

 

There were so many great things, from Mulder's ringtone to the motel clerk drinking the rubbing alcohol, to Gillian's delivery of the "guys don't send me pictures of their junk anymore" line. Also, Mulder's eyes in the fox head, the red speedo, and the monster makeup. I grinned like a loon through the whole thing. It looked like everyone was having a blast.

 

Also, I kind of felt bad for the real bad guy....I wanted to hear his confession! =)

 

And poor Guy! Who ever wants to wake up tomorrow and go to work? Being a human is the worst!

 

One thing that confused me, I didn't understand Scully's comment about being immortal.

 

There's been references to that before, in a few episodes. One is Clyde Bruckman (Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose), who can see how people will die, tells her she won't. The ouroboros tattoo she gets in Never Again that symbolizes immortality. Then there's the crime scene photographer Alfred Fellig from Tithonus who "takes her place" and dies instead of her when she gets shot. Oh, and the fact that when she and Mulder were stuck in that time loop with the bank blowing up in Monday, I remember getting the idea that part of what was wrong with the bank blowing up was her inability to die.

I will say that the actor playing Guy Mann(love it-especially for a lizard) was fantastic, especially with Mulder. I guess Scully doesn't even need to pay the animal shelter-when you're FBI you can just take your pick!

 

Did like Mulder's line about you expect the owner of a motel like this to be a peeping Tom-Psycho shout out-and the birds on the wall were also a shout out to the movie.

 

And I did like that the motel owner was perving on Mulder-with his red speedos on(LOL) instead of Scully-mirroring the twist of the were-lizard. And all the townspeople were addicted to something-hotel owner to alcohol and transgender female to crack. 

 

Feel a bit sorry for Daggoo-if he's like Scully's other pets, he has about a 6 month life span!

Full disclosure: I wasn't an X-Phile way back when.  Though for nostalgia sake, I am watching this. First episode? Eh.  Way too much exposition.  Second one?  The parts I saw I liked but since i forgot to PVR it I'll need to go revist this.

 

This?  I loved greatly.  While I don't know a lot about the inside jokes, even I knew the red speedos mean something and yowza...we got one hell of a shot.  But it was Mulder's long rambling and Scully just nodded along saying "Yeah, that's the guy I know." that sold me. 

 

That and Mulder's "DAGGOO?!"

Mulder tells Guy "We're the same" and Mr. Were-Monster calls Mulder "Fox-Man"? Nice.

 

I'm counting Guy's baffled declaration that the tie was "just waiting to strangle you" as another reference to "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose."

Too bad it wasn't with Mulder! So that is NOT a check on my end. Exception being the 'that's my Mulder' line and the fact that she's supposed to be wearing his shirt. Nope we can't go there with those two. Others sure. No thanks XF, that kind of stuff isn't so funny to me anymore. When they weren't involved sure, but after they've been together for a long time, had a kid... no. I hope things get made up for in Babylon. I'd love to see a nice surprise there between M & S  >:). Something unpredictable. And yes I know that the XF isn't about that... just so tired of the predictable nature of it.

Ah, thanks. So a nice bit of whiplash then from zany back to depressing. 

 

That reminds me of another scene I liked tonight-where the psychiatrist told Guy to walk in the cemetery to see how much worse it could be.  I do think the scene with the psychiatrist could have been filmed differently. I honestly had no idea who he was or why Mulder was there until he mentioned the medication. It seems that a lot must be on the cutting room floor for these episodes.

I giggled through most of this episode.  When it was over, I turned to the cats and said, "It's already half over."  I love *any* Darin Morgan episode.

 

ETA: In the original series, they drove Ford Tauruses all the time.  The show has a long history of using Fords.  I do remember the excuse that the Taurus was the #1 rental car at the time, so, of course, whenever they went out of town & had to rent, it was a Taurus.

 

I noticed this took place in Oregon.  I'm sort of leaning toward this is what Grimm *should* be, instead of that stupid soap opera they're handing us last & this season.  I'd like to see Nick come up against LizardMan.

Forgot to mention that I loved all the Mulder and Scully interaction in this one. It was playful and light and fun, like a breath of fresh air. The "bat crap crazy", and the "this is how I like my Mulder" were so perfectly affectionate and lovely. It cracked me up that Mulder was all skeptical.

 

Very important question, though....when he was throwing the pencils at the I Want To Believe poster, did she say something along the lines of "hey, what are you doing to my poster?" I remember that he kicked and ripped one in the basement office while he was (ridiculously) accusing Skinner of not being on his side. So, could the current poster be Scully's?

 

Also...token lesbian here to weigh in on the whole gay and/or trans jokes thing. Maybe it's just me, but as long as I can tell that the jokes aren't being made from a nasty place, they make me laugh. Within the LGBT community (or at least my experience in it) there's a lot of poking fun at stereotypes and using them to describe ourselves. Humor pretty much reigns about that sort of thing. I'm not trans, but I have friends who are, and I know none of them would have been bothered by the content of X-Files tonight. They'd crack up. But then, I think that's because the intent obviously wasn't nasty. But to each their own! =)

 

On the bit of Scully porn....I can't help it, I ate it up. I think that's the shameless fangirl in me, though.

RE: the transgender comment complaints.

Darin Morgan eps are always about the human condition. I believe that the transgender repartee herein was spot-on. The whole episode was about being something that you're not. As Rhys Darby's "were-man" character discovered, waking up one day to discover that you are not who you are *supposed* to be, and to want so badly to be what you are "supposed" to be, at all costs.

C'mon guys, give the writers *some* credit- they are smart and funny and revered for a reason.

Loved the epitaph on Kim Manners' tombstone, "Let's kick it in the ass."

 

How did I miss the reference to Scully being immortal? Where was it? 

 

Whoever played the lizard man was excellent. 

 

I'm one of those people that didn't love Jose Chung. But I liked this, although not as much as Clyde Bruckman.  And again Scully gets a dog at the end, so they have that in common.
