Yes, but you can only speak for yourself and the experience you have had watching the show. The friends I know who watch the show and I guess the boards, or Facebook or whatever have already shared some choice comments, and I found a few without even looking. I totally get that they had one or two Latina leads, but you know in America when people start talking about diversity on television, for whatever reason they are typically talking Black people. I also mentioned Asian and Hispanic, and they would more than likely go with a certain physical type of Hispanic.

I don't watch the show, but I am confident that you are correct about the racial tension... but then again, why would there be racial tension when there are no, or very few black contestants that are eliminated early? I am also sure that the girls don't have tension because they don't see those contestants as serious competition, and the minority girls themselves probably don't either, they are using it as some exposure as a stepping stone to something else. I also think there was something in the news one year on the Bachelorette? where one of the male contestants did say something racial to the black contestant...but someone else would have to verify that.

As I think about it, I see them going with a Black female Bachelorette before I do a male Bachelor. You are correct, it becomes complicated when you are casting for the show because either the people are not sincere and are just trying to be on tv, or you are searching for a large pool of people who are willing to date a minority and have that play out on television. That is a toss up though, as they risk offending Caucasian males who don't want to see a Black man with "their" women, Black women who feel like a "good black man is going to another Caucasian girl, etc. I think they would think a Black Bachelorette would be less threatening to the wider audience, but black men are more inclined to date outside of their race than black women. It is a difficult situation, and I am curious to see what UnReal does on their show.

I see your point about the ratio of the contestants as well. Who knows? Personally I think the idea of dating a man (or woman) that is dating several people at the same time and having that play out on television frightening, so props to any of them that have the courage to expose themselves that way.

Although I would like to say "people are just people," based upon the history of television and the media, I know that if Jubilee or anyone that comes after her turns out to be crazy, etc. that is going to be looked at through a different lens than the other Caucasian contestants that have done the same or worse. People don't have to agree with me, but I know it is true. I don't know where Ben is from, but i would think you are more likely to find a man willing to date another race that has grown up in a city around diversity than a small town person.

With that being said, I am in a mixed race relationship, my husband is from a small town in Indiana, and his family couldn't have been more amazing about it . We, however, did not live there or meet there and I often wonder if the experience would have been the same if we had. I've always believed our issues are more regionally, etc. based than racial..he is a product of divorce, my parents have been together for 40 years...differences like that. I love country music, he detests it. He will listen to rap, and I tolerate it on a limited basis.

It will be interesting to see what happens if this contestant does go far. I hope you have a fun time watching this season, and as with many shows, I will be reading the boards to keep up with what is happening.

Possibly since Ben is relatively young, the women on the show seem to skew younger than the usual crop.  Perhaps that's why we're seeing so few with real careers?  I hereby am guessing that Ben will choose someone with a college degree.  He seems serious-minded (business degree), pretty intelligent, and conservative.  Just my prediction.  I believe he wants someone he can relate to and who has shared some of the same experiences.  His parents were so compatible and similar, I'm thinking he sees them as a blueprint for a happy marriage.

I feel like I need to rewatch (no chance in hell) because I thought there were so many beautiful women. Like each intro I was taken aback how pretty they all are.

I like Ben so far, though he is a hair bland. When they showed the "this season" cuts there were a few times I thought he looked just smoking hot. I have high hopes he will be a good lead.

Speaking of pretty, I think Becca is gorgeous. Just beautiful. And there is something about her I really like.

What the hell am I doing with all this positive feedback? I did watch it sober via DVR which was a first for me and I realized time moves quicker when I've got my Bachelor buzz going. I'll get lit for next viewing and do this right and hopefully be back to my snarky self.

So, Samantha is a classic example of vocal fry, am I right? Or does she just have a naturally raspy, laryngitis-sounding voice?

I didn't remember her, but I watched episode 2 tonight.  Samantha has a husky voice, but it's not vocal fry.  It doesn't have enough of a guttural edge to it, like a vibration at the end of words.

In my household, we refer to them as "combatants," regardless of gender.

Funny you should mention that. I went to the ABC site to look up the cast and some are identified as "character" instead of contestant. I have to wonder if some intern uploaded the original storyboard notes to the site by accident.

I'm a bit late, I just watched it the other day. My thoughts so far:

Ben: Love him. He's dull but adorable. I like his voice, I like his body type, and I think if he grew a bit of facial hair he'd look even better. I'm not a big fan of the baby face, but I really like him. And that says a lot, because I have liked NONE of the Bachelors so far.

Lauren B: I liked her as soon as I saw her intro, she's small and cute and seems like a regular pretty girl. Let's see if she has substance, if she does she'll be a favorite of mine.

Amanda: Her kids are adorable, and I liked her a lot. The voice is annoying, but she is pretty and seems like a very loving person.

Mandi: I try to stay away from judging people based on their looks, but I do not think she is pretty. The more makeup she puts on, the older she looks. I feel like all the contestants this season look like people from seasons before. Maybe they all saw the same plastic surgeon and picked from a list of only 4 nose choices.

Twins: They're cute! I like how they're kind of in the background watching at this point. I think they're going to be part of some drama sometime soon, but they are smart to stay back right now but not disappear completely. Their intro made them seem like they're going to be ditzy and dumb, but I like them.

Laura: Redhead. I miss her! I liked her! The only thing I didn't like was Red Velvet, it sounded pornographic, like another poster said. I thought the navy blue gown was beautiful on her and I have no idea why he didn't choose her. Maybe she didn't speak up enough to be remembered?

Lace: I don't think she's pretty and I don't like her. But I want her to stay because I love the drama. She's not even intimidating because she is going to sabotage her chances by herself anyway.

Jubilee: I liked her at first. I think she's pretty and I love her body. She seems goal oriented and I hope Ben wants a woman who wants to achieve success, and not just sit there in an apron while Ben goes and makes the money. I want Ben and whoever he picks to be equals. I think it would be interesting to see their relationship develop.

Olivia: Love her. Go get what you want girl. I don't care that her mouth is big, I don't care that she looks froggy sometimes, I think she's great and I love a girl with confidence. I can see her and Ben together, at least now- I'm not sure what to expect from her for the rest of the season.
