Why didn't Steve get new girlfriend Lynn to help Nahele? (I am sure I spelled that wrong.) Maybe next episode? I predict Steve will somehow end up as his guardian and will have to save him from Gabriel. Because everything leads back to Gabriel.

I wasn't buying slutty coed being attracted to Danny. Chin? Absolutely. Steve? Sure. But Danny? Nah, not seeing it at all. He looks like an average, suburban, 40-year-old father.

While I didn't appreciate the gore of seeing a half-eaten body in this episode I was enjoying pork chops at the time so I guess that's fair.

I always like it when this show switches roles up so I loved seeing Danno as a professor. It's interesting that his demeanor as a cop translates well to the classroom.

There was not twenty pounds of weed in that bag. Weed is bulky. Twenty pounds would have been falling out of that ceiling panel like tribbles on Captain Kirk's head.

Props to this show for having a plot in which a character sits around waiting for a pig to shit a bullet. And Jerry seemed to enjoy himself for what that is worth.

A little of Danno's nephew goes a long way but I think he was put to good use here.

OK, dozed off by the end... Whodunnit?

I'll probably have more to say tomorrow/later, but for now...

I think Jerry appreciated that shitty (pun mostly intended) job, of watching for the pig who swallowed the bullet to give it up, even though it was a pretty crappy (again, pun mostly intended) job for someone to get stuck with, because he's 1 of those souls who likes to feel needed. Especially when it's by a group of people he likely considers the adult equivalent of "the cool kids" in his high school days.

I agree that Eric was put to good use here--but it helped that the character still can pass for "normal" college age. And I appreciate the fact they went back in continuity & remembered that when they created the character, 1 of the last things he said in the ep in which he was introduced (the "vote on the killer" ep from, like, S3 I think) was that he decided (after helping his Uncle D & Steve solve the case) he wanted to work in a crime lab.

I mean, if we're not gonna get anymore scenes involving Brian Yang's Charlie Fong character as the go-to crime lab tech for the team (which it's starting to seem like--he hasn't been on since S3 or S4), they might as well have made something out of Eric's apparently "throwaway" line about working in a crime lab & had him end up working at the HPD crime lab so he could help the team, as preposterous as his ending up in the HPD lab may be, even with his HPD connections through his Uncle D.

That way they're utilizing an already-created character instead of adding a new 1. I know that adding a new recurring character (except maybe Danny's son Charlie, since he's only 3 or 4 & is kinda cute) irks a lot of viewers (& posters) to no end these days.

I don't really find the character of Eric that annoying--though I did in his first ep when he was such a goofball that he sent Gracie that "topless with a mohawk" pic of Danny (real-life pic of Scott) that was supposedly in a calendar involving Newark/NJ cops. I'm guessing he just sent it to everyone in Danny's online address book & that's how he sent it to Gracie.

But I do love when he says something Kono takes offense to as a woman, or for whatever other reason, & Kono asks Danny if she can smack Eric for it. He did it this ep & in at least 1 more, if not in every ep he's been in.

I guess Kono asks permission, instead of just hauling off & hitting Eric, 'cause she & Danny are friends, pretty much (non-blood) ohana, & she doesn't wanna offend Danny by smacking a *real* relative of his without his knowledge/permission.

And this is why pigs are treyf.

Didn't we have a discussion back around season 2 (which would have been on TWOP) that none of them could go undercover anymore because they've been on television for press conferences, several have been in jail and were covered extensively in the local news, they've been interviewed, etc. Did the showrunners just forget? Also not wild that Danny had a storyline that separated him from the rest of the crew for most of the episode. Does Scott Caan no longer get along his castmates?

We had the now-obligatory mention of how much of a criminal mastermind Gabriel must be. They're making him out like the second coming of Machiavelli and it's just ridiculous.

I liked this episode a lot more than that crappy 'first date from hell' one.   But I too wondered about the plausibility of anyone on the task force being able to blend in without being recognized by this late stage in the game, especially on a campus where they've gone before to question suspects and witnesses in other crimes.

I loved that he was reading Charlotte's Web.

I agree, co-ed was just coming on to Danny for good grades.  I liked that Eric, at the end of the undercover gig, was going to tell the girl  the truth about himself. Danny was great as the prof - maybe that's what he should have been, instead of a cop.

Overall it was a good episode with one cohesive plot that they all worked on.

Wonder why the family court judge would allow Nahele's father custody when the boy himself was so strongly against it.  I guess the father wanted custody to find out how much Nahele remembered about the murder.

Kono seemed awfully chipper for someone whose husband was in deep pigshit.

Anyhow, those are my random thoughts on the episode.

I guess the girl needed an education for upper class escorting that is a career goal because coming on that hard to a first day interim professor for the last one who just got murdered was just more 5-0 weirdness

Very likely...

The show needs new characters every once in a while so the big bad of the season will have someone to kidnap.  I'm not keeping a strict list, but it seems like every member of 5-0 has been abducted at least once already.

Who is the random blonde girl Chin is working with? Do we really need another cast member? The cast is getting so bloated. Is she going to turn into some bad person? When she was working on her surface pro she looked suspicious. Kono really did look like it was another day while Adam is a murderer. I thought Danno was rocking his glasses as a teacher and I wanted the slutty student to find out he was a cop.

She is an Inspector, their detective rank, with the San Francisco police sent to study 5-0 should San Francisco start their own task force. Over the years from injury and personal reasons 5-0 has been a hard job on its cast. I don't know if Grace Park will take more leave or they just have a specific story arc for the Inspector beyond a possible love interest for Lieutenant Kelly.

Actually SFPD Inspector Abby Dunn (Julie Benz's character) was introduced as the head of a Five-0 like task force *already operating* in connection with the SFPD.

She's apparently in Hawaii to observe Five-0 & see if she can learn anything from them that they're not yet doing in SF & possibly should be.

In Ep 608, after Steve swears her in as a temporary Five-0 member (since she's a cop she might as well be able to offer an extra hand on a case, if they need it, instead of just tagging along doing nothing), she's talking with the team & mentions that Inspectors Stone & Keller (a reference to the SFPD Inspector characters played by the late Karl Malden & Michael Douglas in ABC's 1970's cop show The Streets of San Francisco) were enjoying the immunity they got from being on the task force in San Francisco. So, yeah, SF's version of Five-0 is *already running* when we meet Abby, & Abby's in charge of it.

I haven't heard anything about Grace Park--or anyone else in the cast who's part of the Five-0 team--taking more time off for anything than they already get in their contracts (like Scott gets to do 5 less eps, per season, than Alex so he can spend time with his LA-based family & he can work on his other interests in the business, not have to spend as much time in Hawaii since he prefers LA, & he can do whatever else).

Just because they've brought in a new woman character &--temporarily--put her on the team, it doesn't necessarily mean she's a replacement for the existing woman on the team; she could be replacing 1 of the guys... *If* anyone's being replaced. And so far it doesn't look like that's happening--I think the entire existing team has been in the 2 episodes with Abby.

I also haven't heard any specific details of the Abby character's storyline besides she's a possible new love interest for Chin.

Every time they introduce a new female character, I roll my eyes.   The producers must believe if you insert romance, more female fans will watch.  And if you insert over-sexualized young women in revealing clothes, more male fans will watch.  But really, all you need to do to keep fans interested in the show is tell a better story.

I agree, altho I've long forgotten why Steve is even in his life.  Nahele stole Steve's car....? vaguely? So where has Nahele been living this whole time? Well, at least the dad is going back to jail now (assuming they caught him and that's not the hiatus cliffhanger.)

The pigsty murder victim was gruesome, even for 5-0. Blecch.  Watched every scene of that through my fingers.

I think my favorite part was when JulieBenz and Chin are talking after he opened her car door. She makes (what I thought was) a very obvious play for him a la "chivalry isn't dead..." and as he shut her door he completely gave her an epic eyeroll. So even if they do end up in bed together, he at least knows her game.

What ever happened to Lindsay Price from the prison? Other than her being arrested on Castle this week, of course.

I thought the littlest Lawrence was great. And I enjoyed that Danno told him he was proud of him at the end.

Kono + Adam????????? wtf

I was also wondering where Nahele has been living all this time. And shouldn't he have had some kind of representation sitting with him in court? A guardian ad litem or social worker? I thought he was at least seventeen when he was caught stealing Steve's car. I can't see any court forcing an almost 18-year-old to live with an estranged father.

I predict Nahele's father will meet up with one of Gabriel's peeps in prison and they will conspire to inflict more mayhem.

Danny's son Charlie, since he's only 3 or 4 & is kinda cute

Danny has a son?  When did that happen?  I'm a casual watcher but I don't remember seeing any episodes where Danny has another child.  They didn't have his brief affair with his ex-wife while she was married to her 2nd husband result in a child, did they?

Yes, they did.  But Rachel said he was Stan's son until little Charlie needed a bone marrow transplant and then she had to admit that Danny was the father.

Yes, they did. But Rachel said he was Stan's son until little Charlie needed a bone marrow transplant and then she had to admit that Danny was the father.

Rachel actually told Danny it was his baby--& she was sure of that--when she initially found out she was pregnant. (S1 Finale)

Then, after he stayed behind in Hawaii to help get Steve out of the jam he was put in after being framed by Wo Fat for Governor Jameson's murder, & to help get Kono out of the mess caused (apparently also by Wo Fat) when she was suspended from Five-0 & HPD & accused of stealing the money from the HPD Asset Forfeiture Locker (taken to ransom Chin from a bomb collar he'd had placed around his neck at midseason of S1, then set afire & destroyed by Victor Hesse upon delivery), instead of getting on the redeye to Newark with pregnant Rachel & their daughter Grace, Rachel suddenly told Danny (apparently from New Jersey, where Rachel & Gracie apparently stayed for awhile once they arrived) that she was wrong--the baby was actually from her current marriage to Stan, the wealthy real estate developer. (Beginning of S2)

Rachel maintained that lie--disappointing Danny, who was apparently excited by the new baby--all the way through his birth. And, she called Danny to be her "birth coach" when she went into labor "early" (for Stan's baby, but probably not for Danny's) & Stan was on a business trip to Beijing. I think it was supposed to be Rachel's way of having Danny there for their second child's birth without having to admit she'd lied that Stan was the baby's father. Twisting the knife in deeper, Rachel gave the baby the middle name "William"... Which isn't that far off from Danny's last name, Williams". There were about 9 million other hints in this ep that the baby actually was Danny's, if you paid enough attention to things in that ep & before to catch them all. (a little past midseason of S2)

Then we get to the S5 finale. Rachel calls Danny & has him meet her at a park, where she's conveniently watching her/their son, Charlie (Charles William Edwards), play on the monkey bars. When he arrives, they make a little small talk about Charlie being on the monkey bars & Danny--at least--being scared when Gracie would play on them at the same age. After that, Rachel drops the paternity bomb on Danny, telling him Charlie has a (real-life, not something made up for the plot) disease called HLH (the name's really long & complicated). Rachel explains it, & that the best chance for a cure is a bone marrow transplant of a certain type of match. She further explains that she, Gracie, & Stan were tested as potential donors, but none of them matched. Then it dawns on Danny why she's telling him this, & he gets very angry about her lie & missing out on the first 3 years of their son's life. As angry as he is at Rachel (who claims she lied so, if something happened to Danny in the line of duty both of her kids wouldn't lose their father) he agrees to be tested & asks what she can tell him about that. That's basically where the scene ended. Danny was, of course, found (offscreen) to be (enough of) a match & he donated the marrow to Charlie (again, offscreen) in the October 16th ep; they went Trick or Treating together (this time onscreen), in the hospital's Pediatric Ward, in the October 30th ep.

Also not wild that Danny had a storyline that separated him from the rest of the crew for most of the episode. Does Scott Caan no longer get along his castmates?

Yeah, I've been wondering about this too.  I know that his contract says that he appears in five fewer episodes, but it seems to me that more and more for the episodes he's actually in, he's not a part of the main story and Danny just sort of does a flyby appearance at the beginning or end of the episode.  Or--like this latest episode or in the Amber episodes--Danny gets a separate storyline and doesn't really interact with the rest of the team.  I wonder if they're arranging the scripts and the filming schedule so Scott does a whole bunch of his scenes, covering his appearances in several episodes, then he scurries back to his beloved CA.

I didn't mind the coed horndogging on Professor!Danny, I don't think it is inconceivable that she'd be attracted to him, a lot of girls have daddy complexes, and he does have that perfect ass that the wardrobe department tailors to perfection.  But...yeah...that character struck me as trying to manipulate or sleep her way into a better grade.

Which...I thought it was strange that Detective!Danny didn't have her investigated as the potential killer.  She was coming on very strong, and Danny was following up on smaller nuances from other students, so it seemed strange that her behavior didn't ping his radar.  Or, Danny has been written as a very confident and somewhat egotistical man who cares for his appearance and considers himself quite handsome, so having a young coed come on to him was just as he expected.  I was also waiting for the "Ew, she's only five years older than my daughter!" squik-out moment from him, and we didn't get that either.

I want my McDanno back.  I want bromance and carguments.

Yeah, it really made Rachel look bad. I wonder if her marriage to Stan survived.

They haven't specifically mentioned anything about that, either way, so far. But I don't believe actor Mark Deklin, who's played Stan in 2 episodes--

S1 when Rachel & Grace were in a carjacking intended for Stan (& other things meant for Stan, over some tapes he made of meetings about his building projects/permits with a corrupt Housing Commissioner, also happened to Rachel & Grace because the Housing Commissioner's goons did their stuff when Stan was on his way back from an overseas business meeting... As usual) while Five-0 searched for a missing Federal Witness in the Hawaiian jungle, whom they had to get to court to testify by 5PM that day.

S2--When Danny's vengeful ex-Training Officer from the Newark PD, whom Danny helped imprison as a dirty cop, kidnapped Grace after he was released & then ordered Danny to "put 3 bullets in him (Stan), center mass" in order to save Gracie's life, or so he said. After Stan got to the local park Stan was to meet him at, Danny explained the situation to Stan & he agreed to be shot because it was supposed to save Grace, whom he loved like she was his own kid. Danny instead shot Stan once in a shoulder & put the other 2 bullets into the ground nearby.

--is booked for any other episodes of H50 (at the moment). Mark Deklin (Stan) has recently been Tweeting about filming what appears to be a supporting or recurring role in Jennifer Lopez's new cop show, Shades of Blue--which is supposed to start airing soon on either CBS or NBC (I forget which), though.

So I have the feeling that perhaps Stan & Rachel's marriage is (finally) in the process of going kaput, perhaps helped along by the revelation--to Stan, at least--that Charlie, whom he's raised as his kid for over 3 years, is really Danny's kid as much as Gracie is.

Rachel, however, has alluded to Danny to there being problems in her marriage to Stan as far back as her (the character's) first appearance in S1 Ep 10 (Heihei). But I also have the feeling that if the Rachel & Stan characters are divorcing, it'll take place offscreen--unless they can create an ep plot something about it will fit into easily--& we probably have physically seen the last of Mark Deklin/Stan Edwards in an H50 episode.

Can someone fill me in on the history of Nahele and his dad and what the point of that scene at the end was? Did they know the dad had murdered someone (by the way, what idiot does that with an 8-10 year old in the car? I have an almost 7 year old and I am confident she would know exactly what was going on there. Even my 5 year old would) before that scene at the end?

Otherwise: Professor Danny was awesome. Someone should mention to him that office hours are conducted with the door open so that he doesn't get arrested for sexual harassment. Jerry can go away at any time. I never ever need to see pigs eating a corpse again. I really didn't buy the perp, I was expecting a misdirect to it ending up being his roommate. The list of minor recurring characters in this show, like Joey Lawrence's brother, is so long that they should really start episodes with a list of characters and who they are and why we care about them.

Hawaii Five-O has officially jumped the pig.

Why did I have to see pigs devouring a corpse? Along with repeated views of the multilated body. This was supposed to be a fun show with beautiful scenery. Now it deals in degradation. I expect to see that if I am watching Deadwood but even they weren't as graphic with the pigs.

Jack Lord must be spinning in his grave. I am out. I will never watch this again.

Except for whatever was in this episode, I don't think they've ever really said what the deal is with Nahele & his father. It appears the Dad was in prison for who knows how long, but apparently for something other than the murder we saw him commit, with a younger Nahele in the "getaway" car reading a comic book while the deed was taking place.

And since Nahele was caught by Steve after stealing/stripping John McGarrett's vintage Mercury Marquis, it appears Nahele was left to his own devices, whether he was homeless or had relatives, friends' parents, guardians, or a foster family who just didn't care to/couldn't supervise him, or whatever else.

At least until he crossed paths with Steve, who put him back on the straight & narrow by connecting him with positive influences & better ways to spend his time than following in his Dad's footsteps & pursuing a life of crime. And Steve reinforced that by telling Nahele he *wouldn't* sign or file the complaint he drew up against him for car theft with HPD; it would stay locked in his desk drawer, unsigned, if he showed up at Steve's to help him restore the Marquis... again... until that was finished, & he followed other conditions Steve set for him (stuff like staying in school, keeping the job Steve got him at Kamekona's Shrimp Truck, staying out of other legal trouble, etc.).

Seeing as Nahele was all "But I DON'T wanna live with my Dad!" after the Family Court Judge ruled he had to, I think Nahele probably called HPD, if not Five-0 (somehow disguising his voice, so it wouldn't be recognized, if he called the latter), & told them he knew about a murder, who committed it, perhaps how long ago, & where the remains could be found. And Five-0 went & apparently found the remains, just where Nahele probably said they'd be. And I think Nahele did it so his father would (probably/likely) go back to prison, this time for life, & Nahele wouldn't have to live with his father anymore, like the Judge ordered. I don't think Five-0 knew Nahele's father committed a murder until they were led to the remains (& probably told who was responsible at the same time--I thought it was said/implied in the last scene that they were gonna arrest Nahele's Dad for it or they were looking for him in connection with it).

By the way, the Family Court Judge in Nahele's case was played by the same actress/was the same character who awarded Danny Joint Custody of Grace, including not being allowed to be taken off-island by Rachel without Danny's permission, in an S4 ep, after Rachel filed for a Custody Modification in the S3 Finale asking to take Grace to Las Vegas to live with Rachel, Stan, & then-baby Charlie, because they needed to move for Stan's work.

They do start the eps with A) A list of the lead actors (who play the main characters), in the main title sequence & B) A list of the recurring actors appearing in the episode & the actors whose characters are (at that point) specific to just the episode involved, at the beginning of each ep, after the main title sequence & the first commercial break air.

It's up to the individual viewer, in my opinion (especially if they're regular/frequent viewers), to remember which actors play which recurring characters & how they're connected to the team. I've been watching since the premiere--haven't missed an episode yet--& I have no trouble keeping the recurring characters & their connections to the team straight.

Thanks for the overview, that was helpful! I've watched every episode but I find myself having a hard time keeping track of characters like Eric, Amber/Melissa (I know the story on that one, but I wouldn't recognize her on a new ep without "Previously on" or Googling her/the actress), the sort that only show up occasionally. It's my problem, not the show's.

Didn't the scene of Steve in the car in the garage with Nahele end with Steve saying he knew there was something N was not telling him, and it immediately segued to N's memory of the murder?  I assumed he did tell Steve about it right then and that the memory was our version of his narration (rather than him having to call 5-0 or tip them off in some other way).

I am so tired of people smirking about Jerry behind his back.  Chin Ho, as his old schoolmate, and really the one who's kindest to him when he's not smirking, okay, I get that.  But Blondie from SF can just wipe that condescending grin right off her face.  Jerry's worth a million of her.

Too bad Russo was about to 'fess up to Tiffany (Stephanie?) about him not being a student.  They maybe could have used him undercover in future.

Also sorry the smartass pickpocket guy was killed.  I kind of liked him and hoped to see him again.

I guess I just like smartasses (Russo and pickpocket) and hopelessly romantic and idealist conspiracy theorists.

There was a line where Steve said something about being annoyed by Danny and it struck me.  Danny complains about Steve all the time, and Steve often implies he's frustrated by some of Danny's traits, but I don't think he usually says that out loud!

I didn't notice it last time, but yep, Abby has Catherine-baby-voice too.  Now it's going to annoy me till she's gone.

Abby:  Nobody has ever opened the car door for me before.  I learned about chivalry from my dad.  I thought it was dead.

Okay, maybe dad was chivalrous, but apparently he never opened the door for his daughter before!

I am tired of the attitude some of them have about Jerry as well. They don't smirk and snark as much about the shrimp guy (whose name I can't spell).

As for car doors and chivalry - I may have had a door or two opened for me (usually on first dates, it goes downhill after that), but mostly I just want to open and close it myself. And I would never wait for that old time chivalry, where you sit until the guy gets out of the car and walks around and opens the door. I'm way too impatient for that BS.
