Small Talk: The Polygamous Cul-de-Sac

Message added by Scarlett45

I  understand the fear, concern, heartbreak, and stress in this current situation. I ask that we please remember the politics policy. Keep politics, political references, and political figures (past and present) out of the discussion.

Stay safe and healthy.

When I had mine tattooed the first time, my technician said that she would not do eyebrows that she couldn't be proud of, no matter what a customer asked for.  For example, some of her clients wanted heavy tadpole or sperm-shaped eyebrows.  My technician would refuse to do them, and advised potential customers to go elsewhere if that's what they were looking for.

If you Google "bad eyebrows," you'll see things that help you realize that the Brownbrows aren't all that bad in the overall scheme of things.

Thanks Sofa Sloth, this is exactly what I needed when I started this thread!  I think the microblading is for me, now I’ve only to find a talented technician.  Funny that you should include that picture of Meri in your explanation - it is the reason I have always been so hesitant to do this.  If I came out looking like that picture and it was permanent, I’d off myself!  Can you imagine?

Honestly, my eye brows are just rubbish.  Not much to work with at all.  I use a pencil now and my daughter tells me they are hopelessly out of style, so if I want to not look like my grandmother, I need to get with the new tech!

I used to get my brows waxed once in a while.  The micro blading I'll be looking into, as my brows have gotten thinner over time.  Thanks Sofa, for the info.

You’re so welcome. Make sure you do due diligence with your research and go over before and after photos of the technician with a fine tooth comb. Talk to others who’ve had nice results and get recommendations. Remember that it’s art and you will get what you pay for, so look for someone in demand and not too cheap.

Before you commit to tattooing also, you can try a professional shape and tint to see if you like the look. You be surprised (even if you have little to work with) what a good beauty therapist can achieve with a shape and tint. Tinting can very temporarily (3-7 days) give a stain to the skin and give you a good indication of how you may feel with more fuller brows.

Well, I feel quite. um, backwards. I have never done anything to my eyebrows in my whole life except tweeze a few errant hairs.  I had no idea there was an entire industry devoted to them.

Haha the way of our image obsessed world nowadays Kohola. There’s a beauty specialist for everything 😊

There’s  absolutely nothing wrong with you never having touched your brows, if they’ve never bothered you or you’re not inclined! That’s a good thing, they likely look great as they are and you don’t need too. If you did decide to try something, try a tint and shape first.

Oh that’s great! It sounds like you had a very good reputable technician which most are, but you do get what you pay for. I see poor jobs walking around occasionally, but I notice more in the form of technical execution, not shape (that’s often the clients own fault with at home make up and tweezing). Eyebrows need to fit your face and colouring and compliment their natural shape.  It’s art and it needs someone with a delicate hand, finesse, skill, professionalism and the ability to say ‘NO that wouldn’t be flattering for you, here’s why...’ when someone requests the sperm shape or other unnatural looks.

Obviously customer satisfaction is important, but those brows are going to be walking around town with people discussing them and they have your name on them! Let’s just say, I would die if my name was professionally linked to Meri’s brows (or any of the Brown’s brows for that matter!)

@Sofa Sloth - question - I have lost the ends of my brows from thyroid issues and the rest of them are white, like my hair under the color.  I color them along with my hair - what are my options?  Thanks!!

Microblading is perfect for those with thyroid problems, when brow tails can fall out and get sparse. Microblading will create those little hair strokes on the tails giving you back your full brows. I probably recommend to continue to tint your brows and get Microblading (to match with the color you tint) on the tails and blended gently through the brows.  If it’s done correctly you won’t even know it’s not your real brows. Find a good technician and have a chat in person.

Just FYI when on thyroid medications you may need touch ups a little more frequently. Sometimes color fades a little more quickly with those with hypothyroidism.

Good luck and keep us updated if you go ahead 😊

If they were smart they would keep something under wraps since the whole Move to Flagstaff story line was way old news (due to social media) before the episodes aired.  You have to wonder if that caused poor ratings.  Who cares about something that's 6 months old and has been splashed all over the internet?

This is my complaint about both Sister Wives and Counting On; by the time the new shows air, they're 6-12 months out of date (or more). These shows can't be that hard to write, film, and edit. I don't see why they can't shoot for 8 weeks, and by the time they're done have the first show ready to air. There isn't a one of these famewhores who wouldn't put off moves, jobs, remodels, or marriages until it could be filmed. Babies are a little harder, but they've got 9 months to schedule them in, too.

Exactly. With social media we know all about the "surprises" they keep trying to pawn off as exciting stuff.

We knew all about the Flagstaff move right down to the houses they rented way before the last season hit the airwaves.  Were we supposed to pretend this was all new news?  Big fat fail.

Soap Dirt just posted an article to say that activity has been spotted on Coyote Pass (sorry this COL doesn't know how to link).  Apparently there are several U-Haul trucks parked on the land.

Speculation is that it may:  - (a) be storage for Robyn's furniture now that she is displaced from her rental  (b) production crew has equipment there to film as some of the rental properties can't be used to film (can't imagine what they would possibly film on that raw patch of dirt)  or (c) the guess that amused me the most, may be getting ready to film the Pudge and Sludge nuptials, perfect for a wedding venue, with angels singink and all.

Most people get married at a place that has some meaning for them.  So Pudge and Sludge will probably be getting married at a coffee shop with free wifi in Chicago.  Next to a yoga studio.

well, that sounds like it is meaningful for Pudge.  Not so sure about Sludge who may just be going along for the tv exposure.  I think the relationship is good, but she doesn't seem all that comfortable in the public eye.

Seems like the only thing that we know for sure is that no buildings permits have been issued as of the date of the article.  I wonder if they will pretend to build or at least sound like they are ready to build?   I am at the point of being an occasional watcher;  I mostly keep up thanks to you, my dear peeps.

Choice (a) makes me LOL.  While it's very amusing to imagine that the trucks contain Robyn's furniture and knick-knacks due to her being displaced, ain't no way that woman is homeless.  Queen B would have Kody by the hair weave if she had to go from Mansion to U-Haul.  But that said, I really, REALLY need to know where she, Kody, and the Prince and Princess are living at the moment.

Why would it be "cheaper" to rent a bunch of UHaul trucks to store your crap in than say, a public storage space or two?

I'm guessing they're still in the rental homes, even though they've sold. With all the watchful neighbors and their smartphones, if there was any moving activity, we'd know about it by now.

Lovely article.  😉

Pudge & Sludge could get married standing over the mxnhole cover in front of the plumbing stack in that white-washed basement where Pudge was doing yoga. If they both wear all white, they'll be nearly invisible except for their hair & eyebrows.

Instead of throwing rice, the guests can shower them with plague infested dirt 😂

Wondering what the COLs think about this situation:

Some kids in my family attend a charter school and IMO the parents have gone off the deep end. The kids are in 6th grade, 5th grade, 2nd grade and one is in kindergarten.

The parents wanted the two oldest to be in a memorizing contest for 8th graders and they were allowed to participate. They learned to recite the Preamble to the Constitition, the Gettysburg Address and the names of the US presidents in order.

You can tell by the rushed delivery and lack of inflection that they don't comprehend the meaning of the Preamble and the Address. Because the parents asked for my input I said how about asking them to translate or define, in their own words, what they are reciting? Blank looks. Where is Gettysberg and why was Lincoln speaking there? Crickets. How about having them choose which president they admire most and explain why? Blank looks. I pretty quickly took the hint that what they were after was compliments, and only compliments.

I  gathered my courage and dug in my heels and said "Parrots recite and children learn. Are you raising parrots or children?" You coulda heard a pin drop and the temperature dropped about ten degrees.

These parents also get up at 5:30 every morning to correct last night's homework before it gets turned in. (They proudly brought this up, I am not a mindreader and could not have known this on my own). I said "But they turn in their original homework, right? Not the corrected, perfect, A+ version?" Blank looks. I said "Homework tells a teacher about a student's progress and comprehension and study habits. Turning in corrected homework skews the picture the teacher sees." Crickets.

IMO, these parents act like they are competing in the Perfect Child/Perfect Parent Olympics and actual learning be damned. I think nagging and insisting that the 8th grade contest be opened up to 5th and 6th graders falls under demanding special treatment for MY special kid. Or am I all wrong here?

PS: To round out the picture, yes, they are religious fanatics.

Good for you!  Those poor kids won't be able to be successful as adults without some critical thinking skills.  Who recites facts for a living?

Which, sadly, says a lot.  Which is why spewing out bible quotes as justifications for atrocities is persistent with that kind.  They can say the words but have no clue about the true meaning.

Sounds like the type of parents who view their kids as extensions of themselves, and all they really care about is bragging rights. I can’t stand people who treat parenting as a competitive event.

I agree with you 100%.  My daughter took it upon herself to learn more about things she had in school.  Or when we went on our first real vacation.  We went to Colorado and the Pikes Peak area, also RMNP.  She learned about it's history and the people who settled it and the geology of the region.  I wasn't sympathetic when she would forget or just not do her homework.  Once or twice I would run something to her that she forgot.  As I worked nights that got old quick.  I finally decided I would no longer do that and told her so.  Before taking her to school I would ask before walking out the door, " you sure you have everything you need?".

I think that is why we have so many people having meltdowns and an inability to cope with setbacks and disappointments in life.

Spot on evaluation-you are definitely not wrong here!

When I was in 5th grade, brother and sister in 8th, my parents were both retired.  We went to a small, rural, public school.  My Dad decided that we would go on a Bicentennial road trip in a van and travel trailer from September 1976-February 1977.  Effectively taking us out of school, the school only wanted us to do the assignments other kids were doing while sitting in class so we took the books with us.

Not good enough for my father.

I was in charge of taking pictures of importance with the Kodak 110 cartridge camera that would augment our written and oral reports once we got back.  We had to write in a journal every day, where we went, what we saw, etc.  We went from California to Maine, down to Florida and back to California again.  When we got back, we each had to hand in a written report as well as construct and deliver an oral presentation to the class.  The theme was the celebration of America’s Bicentennial.

I can’t begin to imagine what school is like, especially homeschool or small charter school for a 5th grader today...even worse when their parents don’t give two shits about learning.

I have no problems with memory work as part of the class.  I would never push my child to be in a memory contest, however.  In 8th grade we took US history and had to memorize the three things you mentioned plus the Declaration of Independence, the names of the states and the capital cities (both for map placement and also in order of admission).  When I took Am Lit in high school we had to memorize those same three plus a bunch of quotes from the founding fathers which we also had to memorize for the US history course we took at the same time.  I would hope that the person who teaches US history to your young relatives will provide appropriate assignments that help them understand.   I am just so irritated now at the younger people who have no grasp at all about US history and government.   And there seem to be a lot of adults who skipped history and civics classes as well.

During pre-history, under The Matriarchy, important things like lineage and assets were traced via the maternal line.

It could never be said with certainty who sired an infant but births were, if not public affairs, at least heavily witnessed and the identities of mothers were rarely in doubt.

The cause and effect of the sire's role was not obvious in the earliest days. It took a long time for realization to set in that a birth today is linked to an act 9 months ago. Obviously, females were the ones who first realized the link between the two acts.

It's also thought that females invented agriculture and pharmacology, and that females were the earliest humans to stand on two limbs and walk and run - because it allowed them to migrate and flee while holding infants and small children with their other two limbs.

Females were seen as wondrous, magical creatures who bled every month without obvious trauma or injury and then stopped bleeding without obvious intervention. And they were the ones who carried new lives inside their bodies.

Crones were seen as being especially wise and mystical because they no longer bled and their bodies retained the essential fluids of life.

Those were the days, my friends, we thought they'd never end.

And then here and there, over time, males realized that they could overpower females without consequence or penalty. Male-centric religions arose and replaced The Matruarchy with aggression and lust for wealth under the guise of "We are doing this for your benefit. We are men of god, after all, we can be trusted."

I think we know how that ended ...

I am currently reading a book called "The Polygamous Wives' Writing Club: From the Diaries of Pioneer Mormon Women."  I'm only a couple of chapters in but having watched Sister Wives, the book is very interesting reading.  First, I've seen numerous mentions of cities I know from SW, such as St. George, Nauvoo, Lehi and Parowan.  The second/third wives write about how difficult their transitions were into already established families.  There's even a Robyn equivalent named Ruth, who put herself firmly in the path of the man she wanted to marry, despite him already having a very pregnant wife at home, and that wife's less-than-chipper reaction to Ruth suddenly moving in.  Sound familiar? 🙂

The message is very clear - polygamy is never easy on the women, but they see the jealousy as a failing in themselves.  Meanwhile, the men scamper off on missions and come home with another wife in tow  It's a religion that favors men 100% and women 0%.  I highy recommend the book.

I’ve seen the names LeBaron and Jessop in the reports about the women and children ambushed in Mexico. Many articles are calling them Mormon, but with those names connected, I was guessing FLDS or similar sect. Awful no matter what, though.

I just posted some info in Christine's thread. Definitely polygamists, a new branch formed from FLDS members. Alma LeBaron left Utah in 1924 because of problems practicing polygamy. The family settled in Mexico. His son Ervil was the one who ordered the killing of Rulon Allred, as well as other family and non-family members. Ervil had 13 wives and a bajillion kids. Ervil was extradited to the US and found guilty of murder. Died in prison in 1981 but had ordered more murders while in prison. It is estimated 25 more people were killed on those orders. Christine is directly related to Ervil LeBaron and Rulon Allred.

According to family members in Utah and here in AZ, many of the remaining  Mexico members had been considering returning to the States due to the increasing violence. Ironic considering the family's murderous background.

I’ll admit, my first thought when I saw the names involved was more along the lines of Big Love than violence in Mexico being to blame, that warring polygamist sects had something to do with it. I definitely watch too much TV.

OK, well, they can just quit (or not start) with making it religious persecution. It is exceedingly tragic, yes, but they live in Mexico because of the laws in the US against polygamy. Even tho the majority of cartel victims are not mormon they will use this as religious propaganda. They are experts at running back and forth across the border while bleeding the beast. They use an address in the US to qualify for AFDC including cash grants, Medicaid and food stamps. (I realize that those terms are outdated but I'm a COL).

One of the victims was 43-years-old. Being that close in age I wonder how well (and if) she and Christine knew each other.

Quote

“We are a community of US citizens that live and operate between Mexico and the United States we are under attack as we speak by the cartels in Mexico…we need this to be shared and the whole world to witness the atrocious inhumane and barbaric acts that were committed against us today,” the page reads.

Joel LeBaron's daughter, Ruth Warriner, wrote a memoir called The Sound of Gravel about living in Mexico while collecting benefits in the US. High rates of birth defects and mentally impaired children, living in filth, eating rotten food, and just plain stupidity that actually killed children. Gah! It's a story that is repelling yet compelling. And nothing has changed today.

Wow, in the book I'm reading that I mentioned above (The Polygamous Wives' Writing Club), it mentions the families fleeing to Mexico way back around 1890.  Color me naive but I am learning a lot from this book and the majority of it falls neatly within the categories of the women on SW.  And Kodork, too, apparently comes from a long line of narcissistic jerky men who liked to desert their current wives for the next flavor of the month that came down the lane.

I know I'm WAY late to the eyebrow convo, but question for you @Sofa Sloth since you're extremely knowledgeable about all things brows.  Can microblading give you an arch if you don't have one?  My brows are growing out (as you see in the inner corner), and I get them professionally waxed once a month and she's leaving that area for future growth.  Ignore my hair, I'm at work, my office is in the middle of a warehouse so I have to put a hair net on each time I leave my office so my bangs get all funky during work (the rest is pulled up in a ponytail for convenience).  But if you notice, there's no arch.  And I want one!  Think microblading would achieve that?

So if I were you, I’d ask your waxer or beauty therapist to create more of an arch. You have plenty of brows and a natural arch point and this should be simple for a professional to achieve. She is not giving you a nice shape based on this photo. I’ve attached a photo showing all the areas in red a waxer could be attending too, in order to create an arch  5D96E0AD-3733-4813-83C0-6D1D1DA781C9.jpeg.d4769d59c4c88c12fe2910a250e83426.jpeg

Microblading will help you create this also, so definitely something to try. You need more brows in glabella area (the middle - which you mentioned you were trying to grow in?) If they don’t grow in there for whatever reason I would recommend you get microblading, your brow point should start in line with your nose if you hold a thin pencil up from your nostril. Also microblading can help you achieve better definition on top of your natural brow and arch where it’s slightly sparse. 1A31075C-E5DB-42D8-9839-5317AB02554B.thumb.jpeg.7735658e840cfa5c819aba74ba784c12.jpeg

I’ve attached my scribbly pictures so you can see what I mean here, (sorry they are dreadful as I’m just using my fat finger to doctor the picture on my phone to hopefully try and show you what could be done 😆)

Good luck! Keep us posted.

You are the best!  I kept looking at that area on the top of the arch and wondered why she didn't use that to create an arch.  I figured she knew what she was doing (I did tell her I want an arch) so didn't question it much, but now I think I' going to look for someone else.  I get it done at European Wax Center.  Now I know my suspicions were right.  And your scribbles are on point!  😆  Also think I'm going to research estheticians in my area for microblading.  Thank you again for all your help!

@AZChristian it was great to meet you and your husband and we should have taken a picture! What a waste of all the time I've spent practicing my Mariah squinty face!

OMG, what a great idea!  Between the squinty face and your woke white sneakers, it would have been hysterical.  I could come back over, wear something REALLY tight and polyester with a kid-sized jean jacket, and I could be Meri!!!!

Mr. AZC is much cuter than Kody, though . . .
