S03.E06: A Puppet Walks Into a Bar

Recommended Posts

D'Elia's puppet looked like Charlie Manson.

It really did.

Who is that creepy-looking blonde-haired kid that seems to be in every intro sequence, this time standing beside Chris D'Elia ?

There were some really good lines in this episode (most of them Funches related).

Shelley (to puppet Shelley): "Do you want to get high ?"

Puppet Shelley nods enthusiastically

Shelley (to puppet Shelley): "You and I are going to be best friends."

Candice: "Oh, he's such a cutie. I haven't seen him this excited since NBC said they were doing a live musical version of 'The Wiz'. Did you guys hear that they still haven't cast the part of the Cowardly Lion ?"

Shelley: "Huh.  All black cast, someone that needs live TV experience, I wonder who they could get ?"

Shelley (turns to the camera): "Call Me !!"

Leslie: "Why are you guys all hiding behind the bar ?"

Brent: "We were .. naughty .. playing spin the bottle.  Oh look, I got Shelley."

(Brent kisses Shelley on the mouth)

Shelley: "I did not expect tongue."

Leslie: "Candice, do you want to go do something ?"

Candice: "Like what ?"

Leslie: "Literally anything else."

Danny (to Candice): "What about roll around in poopie ? You would never .. you wouldn't want to do that."

Candice: "I would do that."

Shelley: "Enough. Enough.  I am not going to watch two grown men lick each other out of spite.  Not again."

Justin: "I trust you Danny.  I know that you trust me. In fact, I'm going to do a trust fall, just to prove it."

Shelley: "Oh I'm going to get my camera out for this."

Danny: "I want you to 100% per cent know that I am not going to catch you."

Justin: "I know ya better than you think Danny. Can't wait to be in your arms."

Danny: "Uh, you're not going to be in my arms. This is really dumb.  This is going to hurt more than when your Netflix special comes out and nobody watches it."

Justin: "Well, I highly doubt that."

Danny: "Let's see."

Justin: "No, no. My heart tells me you are going to catch me."

Danny: "Your heart's dumb."

Justin: "My heart is not dumb. My heart is never wrong."

Danny: "Yippee. First time it's going to be wrong. Go Ahead."

Justin: "For Friendship !!"

(Justin falls backwards onto the floor)

Justin (yells in pain): "Oh god !!"

Shelley: "For Instagram".

Finally watched the West Coast show -- and there were some brutally funny lines.

Like when Justin broke out the box full of puppets, and Danny agrees to help with Leslie's proposal.

Danny: "Oh, Awesome."
Justin: "You know.  If these two puppets ever had a sitcom together, and it got cancelled, this one would be fine because he's kind of fresh on the scene but this one's career would be over because he'd have two failed sitcoms."
Danny: "At least he wouldn't live in a dirty apartment in the valley."

Wow !!

Dr. Drew Pinsky was holding the title placecard in the west coast show.

Leslie: "Why are you guys all hiding behind the bar ?"
Brent: "Because we were being naughty playing spin the bottle.  Oh look, I got Shelley."
(Brent kisses Shelley on the mouth)
Shelley: "Why is your penis out ?"

After Danny tells his story about his first kiss with his cousin Amy, and gets water tossed on him by Leslie and Candice when they stormed out of the apartment, and he shakes off the excess water.
Danny: "Just as wet as my cousin Amy was."
Justin: "Hey, hey, that's not a brag."
Danny: "Whatever dude, when ya got it, ya got it you know what I mean."

After Shelley breaks up Danny and Justin during the tongue fight, and Shelley accidentally knocks Justin to the floor.
Shelley: "I've been working out."

Justin: "I don't believe you. You wanna know why Danny ? 'Cause you trust me and I trust you.  I trust you so much I'm doing a trust fall."
Shelley: "Oh I'm going to videotape this."
Danny: "Ok. Listen, listen. I want you to 100% per cent know that I'm definitely not going to catch you. Ok."
Justin: "I don't hear negativity, all I hear is friendship."
Danny: "Ok, well, you're definitely going to fall, so ... this is"
Justin: "My heart says I'm not."
Danny: "Ok, well this is going to hurt much more than when your Netflix special comes out and nobody watches it."
Justin: "I won't lie to you that will hurt when it comes out on Dec. 1st. but ... I'm not going to feel pain because I'm going to fall into your arms 'cause this is for friendship."
(Justin falls backwards onto the floor)
Justin (yells in pain): "Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww !!"
Shelley: "This is for Instagram".

Did they find out between the East Coast and West Coast live shows that they had been canceled what with the crack by Justin about the puppets being on a canceled show ?  Because D'Elia and Morin were ad-libbing like crazy on the West Coast show, and they had to cut the final scene short (the lead up to the puppet group hug) because they were running long.

ETA: Per Ron Funches' Twitter feed, apparently one of Chris D'Elia's jokes almost got them canceled. I'm trying to figure out which one.

The clapping kid is one of Bill Lawrence's sons.  I think it was the 2nd episode this season at the end as they panned to the band he was half looking at the camera and clapping.  I don't think it was planned so now it seems they keep using him in the opening.  Its kind of getting old at this point though.

I watched the West Coast right after the East coast on hulu, it was great to see the differences.  Bill Lawrnece tweeted between the shows that they were going over stuff for the West coast.  So it looks like they do some tweaks, some jokes changed that might have worked.  One thing I noticed in the East you could see the mattress for the trust fall.  In the West there was no mattress and I think he fell on the ground for real.  Also in the East theey had the Netlfix joke and I think that prompted the cancelled joke with the puppets (Chris D'Elia's previous sitcom Whitney got cancelled, that was the joke, they have referenced it before).  But there was more adlibbing and breaking on the West which I thought was the funnier of the two.  I bet it was the cousin joke that almost got them cancelled, it crossed the risque line IMO.

I really like the meta digs at the cast.

I can't imagine they would have him fall backwards for real without padding there. He could do serious damage to his head or spine, and more cynically, the show could lose a lot of money. Maybe they just hid the mattress better or used something smaller.

I liked that there was something that felt more like a plot this week. It felt like a little bit of a cop out though to have Leslie end the relationship. Less external entanglements, more time to spend at the bar. Then again, I don't think Mike is really an actor. He's a host (and married to the actress who plays Leslie).

I liked the puppets. Very much disliked glasses guy taking the Leslie puppet and then everyone talking about the puppets like they were real people. If the puppets were real people, it started to feel very rape-y and tone deaf. But I know, they're puppets. It just felt more icky and less funny as it went on.

The ad hoc jokes in the West Coast one were far funnier.  Actually, I think out of the whole season the West Coast version has probably been funnier every time other than the first episode.

Yeah, that one moment almost ruined the whole West Coast feed for me.

Agreed.  They just seemed to be a lot looser in the West Cost shows.
