Leon Brown: So Here's Me

Leon is transgender and uses they/them pronouns. As defined in the GLAAD guidelines, they are a they, were a they, and will be a they unless they ever tell us something different.  Per those guidelines, referring to them as a woman or a girl or as she is not okay, regardless of any modifier placed before these words or the time period being discussed.  Referring to them by any name besides "Leon" or "Leo" is not appropriate, regardless of the time period being discussed. Intent matters and people may slip up. Let's strive to respect their identity.

Please review the guidelines of the site regarding the Hate Speech and Insensitive Language Policy, which includes guidelines from GLAAD for the LGBTQ+ community.

You know...this is the usual disconnected storyline that this show seems to specialize in.  On the show we see "coming soon....the big reveal" only to see what the big deal is through social media just a day later.

Yeah, I'd agree, with young people today coming out does not seem as big a deal as it was when I was growing up. Heck, I have family members my parents age who still have not come out. If she is, in fact, gay and coming out, more power to her. I actually think this group of parents will be supportive.  I hope so.

They have to be publicly supportive.  They are involved in a lawsuit calling for equal rights for themselves as polygamists.  RIghts of gays has been one of their arguments for the same for polygamists.

That doesn't mean they will support her behind closed doors.  The official Mormon stance is that homosexuality is a sin.  Since these morons take everything to the high drama extreme who knows what will happen.  Just as long as it doesn't make to the teevee screen they will bend their made up rules anyway that suits the situation.

Yes, I've thought this as well.  If it happens on camera (which I really doubt) they will have to be supportive, but that makes no guarantee once the cameras go home.  I have read that the LDS preaches "it's better to be dead than gay" to their young people and teen suicide rates are much higher in Mormon communities and universities than the national averages. The LDS church puts a whole lot of their members' tithing monies into fighting against gay rights.

So funny that the kids spoil TLCs plot line on twitter! Love it.

I am sure they are all fine with Mariah being gay.  They are a loving group and not very religious.  Christian's often choose what works for them in the Bible and dismiss what doesn't.

Mariah gets a salary from TLC, they all do which is one reason we don't see a lot of them!  The little ones probably have a trust and will get it at 18 as the older ones already have now.

I think they only have a trust if the parents set it up and I can't see the "adult" Browns doing that. The over-18 kids should be getting a separate check for any episodes they are in, which is why both Maddie and Mykelti sold their souls with the weddings.

And we know this how?

I doubt the minor children have a trust. No law protects children on reality shows.  MTV created trusts for the children of the Teen Mom franchise to avoid criticism - not because of any mandates.  Coogan Laws don't apply to reality productions and only a few states even have that protection.  A trust was required for the Gosslin children partly because episodes with scripted outlines were filmed in NY (Coogan Law) state and because the two parents fought for control of the money.

The Coogan law says studio has to set it up.  Child stars of the 20s were supporting their parents.  Reality kids are not protected under this.  It goes state by state and it is an issue.  So I was wrong.  The Brown kids may not get anything.  Off to do more googling on this.

I still think the browns are paid a lump sum to be distributed as to how they see fit.

I don't think the older kids collect a paycheck. They aren't employees of TLC; they're contractors.

IIRC, didn't they set up an LLC or a corporation when they signed on with TLC?  They are employees of the Kody-run corporation; he decides who gets paid what.

I officially hate them for getting all this comped travel while not paying any of their normal bills as well.

I know, I'm trying to pull together a trip to Ireland for the spring and I just can't make the $$$ work, even with Brexit.

Same here! Trying for a fall trip England/Ireland 2017. My plan is to do it with just a backpack.

Have you considered auditioning for Kody?  Maybe you can be wifey 5 and make the trip for free.  Insist on England for the honeymoon.

This is personal to me.  Hubs and I went to London in September.  It was expensive.  We are still recovering, and we have good jobs.

Flights, hotel, food etc.   No idea how Mariah can afford it other than TLC money.

I wish I had TLC money to pay for our trip.

I still don't think TLC had anything to do with it. My nieces and nephew, along with friends of mine, have traveled to both Ireland and the UK as well as France, Amsterdam, Italy and Spain on the cheap by getting good deals on flights (great deals after the Brexit vote), staying in hostels and cheap rooms found through Airbnb and mutual friends, buying Eurorail student passes and staying away from fancy restaurants and such.  Logan's girlfriend seems like a smart cookie so I bet she's been planning the budget, and the whole crew is sharing expenses.

The catfisher, in one of her alter egos, disclosed that Meri had discussed Mariah having a girlfriend and wanting to know how to bring up that she knew and was okay with it. I'm sure the CF tried to get it in texts, but Meri only spoke about it on the phone. I think that was part of the reason Mariah is so angry with Meri. She was being told by other people on Twitter that she was being scammed, and Mariah says she also told her that. Yet Meri ignored all of it and shared personal family information with the psycho. We know that the CF is a liar, so it could be that she created a lie based on Mariah's social media accounts, but it also seems clear that Meri was disclosing info to her.

Mariah has always taken things personally. It's her personality and will probably improve as she gets older and gets more life experiences. Whether or not it is disclosed on the show depends on how they can manipulate it for a new season. I think it is a safe bet that it is something boring, since so many people suspect it is her coming out, and the Browns will snicker to themselves about how they tricked their audience. They have no respect for their viewers.

Omg, that puts so much into perspective. I'd be enraged too.

I'm also not really seeing why posting harmless Tumblr erotic pictures (sorry, I'm sex positive and a millennial so maybe I don't get the problem?) is morally equivalent to cheating...You can post things like that, hell, even be in porn yourself, and be upset that your mom cheated on your dad. They aren't at all related. Cheating is not morally the same as being openly sexual.

Also, I grew up religious and was really strict like Mariah. My views changed. A lot. That's not hypocritical, it's growing up. The only people at fault there were the ones putting it on TV.

I don't get the problem with the gender roles discussion? Maybe she was asking them how they differ in Ireland from the U.S. I would if I had the chance, that's super interesting.

Gender role discussions are great --- when you aren't binge drinking on vacation.  It is just as obnoxious as the women attacking Steve Martin for calling Carrie Fisher beautiful.

I didn't see anything about "binge drinking" except that she was in a pub and in a separate tweet saying she's taken a lot of snaps of beer in Ireland, both of which seem very normal...

NIAAA defines binge drinking as 4 drinks (for women).  Girl was drunk and "educating" people.  It's obnoxious.

Where did she say she was educating instead of discussing, or how much she was drinking?! The drinking post was completely separate and not even at the same time... and who knows if the people she was chatting with were sober or not either? Everybody makes jokes like that on vacation (about drinking). She says she was having a discussion with FRIENDS. I don't see how one gets educating strangers drunkenly from that...But my friends and I constantly talk about gender politics and joke about how frequently we discuss it. Idk. Seems like a total NBD to me.

I don't know, I guess I just don't get it. Seems like a big stretch to me. Plenty to snark on without getting grossed out because she drank in Ireland and talked to her friends. Lol.

My point was about Ireland = beer. It's a stereotype. So, her gender role stereotype conversation was great, to her, but then she went ahead and used a stereoype. It bugged me.

I get the irony and hypocracy. Maybe one day Marian will, too. She's come a long way considering her personality and upbringing. As long as she tips well, tourist trap bartenders will just nod and smile.

There IS a lot of great beer in Ireland, though. And a lot of pubs! And I still don't get why it's obnoxious to talk to your own friends about gender politics? I don't love her, I just really feel like I'm missing something, lol.

Maybe I know too many college kids. Her Twitter feed is tame, feminist, progressive, and way less obnoxious than most of theirs, with the same focus on Harry Potter. Mariah seems like any other young 20 something figuring her shit out to me. Maddie and Mykelti with their uber-young marriages and false promises to work and go to school bug me a hell of a lot more. At least this girl has a job and an education. Logan seems cool and hardworking too, though he posts a lot of braggy shirtless photos of himself. *Shrug*

For a normal college kid, Meriah is pretty yawn inducing. For a Utah Mormon kid, she's alarmingly bold. I'm glad she's speaking her mind, even if a lot of it is her way of rebelling against her insane family.

Her world pretty much fell apart over the past few years, and she's dealing better than expected.

i used to loathe her, but have some sympathy for her now.

Confirmed.

If you're a lesbian and never get a husband, do you get sent to your dad's planet?

If you're never married to a man, your father or grandfather can call you into heaven (if they are priesthood holders AKA Good Mormons), but you'll never get your own plant. You'll be his servant daughter for eternity. Better than being someone else's servant or just plain heaven, I guess.
