My older son has a "picture smile" and now so do his three children, my grands.  It is a challenge to get them to give me a real smile for the camera.  The youngest grand went through a stage where he would not smile for any camera.  I have lots of pictures of him not smiling and I told my daughter in law I would cherish those as the period when he didn't smile.  I hope it was a real smile on Axel only because it would be something he chose to do.

I’m a pediatric nurse....that left leg to foot never looked all that functional. These days they are thinking long term for function and adaptive ability. In my career I’ve seen a stronger move towards amputation as a corrective step.

thank you for your input.  Madison did say they spent a year learning and talking to doctors, etc.  I don't think this decision came about just like that.  And I would imagine very hard for parents to make.

But thanks to Evie, I now know what FATCO is. If Evie's surgeries help others, I understand.

True, but posting info and links on social media is one thing, but if they actually film that angel having or just after having surgeries I am not on board for that. She has a rough road to get through and her parents shouldn't put her on display through these tough times. A photo here and there, fine, but don't put her on display for TV $$$.

Preach, Gram.  None of these nimrods seem to think about the long term effects that all of this stuff on SM will have down the road.  It's all for the almighty dollar - they had better put aside a healthy dose for therapy once those kids read what has been posted about them.

Poor Axel comes across like some surly little brat in pictures and text.  And imagine the mileage his school chums will get bullying him as that "freaky kid with apraxia".  Which, by the way, I take with a grain of salt.  I think it's a "poor Maddie" sympathy grab.

I rarely spoke until the age of 3 and when I did I spoke in complete sentences.  I was listening & filing everything away for later.

Other than the can of cabbage Janelle fed him, I've only seen Axlebrush eat and smear on the floor candy bars and junkfood.  Perhaps that has something to do with any disconnections between his brain and mouth.

I think there’s a very fine line between raising awareness/decreasing stigma and violating your child’s privacy- especially when you’re on a reality show. I don’t think Maddie has crossed that line yet, but it’s possible with what I think @Gramto6 was getting at.

Evie is super young right now, she cannot consent to any of this (the social media exposure I mean) and her medical privacy has been compromised. Not in a private support group for parents, or anonymously but with her face, full name, date of birth and entire family history along with it.

If Evie decides she doesn’t want to be the face of FATCO I would her hope her parents respect that, but the cat is out of the bag.

It’s not Evie’s job to educate us about FATCO (unless she decides she wants to), people with non typical bodies have a enough to deal with in our society with ableism and “inspiration porn”. They don’t owe us an explication of their medical conditions (I am not insinuating you said that I’m just pointing it out).

I have to cut Maddie some slack.  My sister dealt with an ADD/ADHD child.  She jokes that it aged her 20+ years, but she was being serious.   It was a daily struggle to get him to take his meds.  A constant battle with school over his behavior.  He got help for a while but it didn't do much for him.  He only went to counseling because he was made to.  As a grown man he still has issues, but is better.  I think she shows her love for him in her posts even when he gives her a hard time.

That has to be a continuing nightmare.  But did she post all of her troubles on social media for the world to see or comment on?  How is that helpful other than to garner sympathy. It certainly doesn't help the kid at all.

If you teach kids to behave and respect others, and model good behaviour rather than letting them do whatever they want for 3 years, there is rarely any need to frighten them with a thundering dad voice.

I wonder if Maddie thinks she’s showing the gritty realities of motherhood? Like a reaction against the happy-happy-always-sunshiney life some people post on social media. But she’s taken it too far and showcased her children poorly, as too do the people on the other side of the spectrum. I do like how she’s more positive about them lately (that dad voice yelling one notwithstanding 🙄). You can give people a peek into the not-so-pretty realties of your life without throwing your kids under the proverbial bus.

Her kids sure have polar opposite personalities.  Nothing wrong with that at all, as long as she doesn't continually try to get Axel to be as happy as Evie.

Or follow in her fathers footsteps of rewarding Evie's personality with love and attention and (possibly without even realizing it...) punishing Axel's personality by withholding love and attention.

Oh, that picture gives me the shivers.....get off your phone and get under that structure in case his foot falls through.

At least his smile looks genuine.

I am absolutely astounded that this is a public park.  No thought regarding the safety of kids using this apparatus, just look at how closely it's located within the fall line of the barbs atop the chain link fence and right below that, what appears to be concrete blocks.  Nothing but a scattering of fallen leaves to cushion a fall and most concerning is that the equipment isn't bolted into the ground.  If 3 hefty kids were on one side, the whole thing could topple over.

More than 75 years ago when I was a kid, we had limited equipment, swings on chains, supported by galvanized metal poles at least 3" in diameter, wood and metal teeter totters, monkey bars...all set in concrete for support, with only the ground to land on.  We also had wading pools that I think were only drained weekly, with a splash of chlorine added periodically throughout the day.

That was then.  Today when I take my great-grands to the local park, there is a splash pad with fresh, circulating water, no chance of swallowing a mouthful of urine contaminated water.  There is also about 10 other pieces of equipment for climbing, sliding, swinging and zip-lining, all secured in the ground properly, with at least 12" of sawdust shavings below.

Maybe North Carolina is attempting to raise a generation of hardy kids, but where I live, the standards of safety on this equipment would not be satisfactory even in your own backyard.

While it is certainly not evident there is the faint possiblity that the area is filled with rubber mulch.  That's what is used under playground equipment in my area.  It doesn't degrade and washes clean when it rains.  It's sometimes hard to distinguish from regular mulch.

Looking at that reminds me of those inflatable jumping house things that are apt to blow up in the air if they aren't anchored.  A couple of years ago, a local teen was critically injured when that very thing happened.  Jeez Maddie, use your head.  That thing is all kinds of dangerous.

Is this information anywhere else?  I don't have Instagram.

You should be able to just click on the link. It’s a public account.

Basically she talks about what stage Evie is at. She’s had the arm cast removed, the leg cast will be removed sometime this week. She’ll be fitted for a shrinker, followed by a prosthetic. She’ll be evaluated, and get a new prosthetic as she grows.

There’s more but that’s basically what she talked about. She came across as being well informed, I have to say.

We have a neighbor directly across the street from us and their driveway lines up perfectly with ours, they don't have a garage or carport so the husband put up one of the metal framed carport with canvas stretched over it... It was just sitting there, no anchoring at all.

They were out of town and we had a wind storm, their contraption lifted off the ground the canvas acted like a giant sail, it started toppling over and over like a giant spider... It moved down their driveway, across the street and down our driveway then veered left and was heading straight for our living room window... Hubby ran outside and grabbed one of the legs but it nearly lifted him off the ground because the wind hitting the canvas sail was too powerful.. A neighbor saw this happening and ran over to help hubby but even the two of them couldn't hold it back and they were both being tossed around, hubby yelled to me to get a big butcher knife, he was able to cut a couple of the ties that secured the canvas to the metal frame and the beast was brought down and subdued... It lay there rocking back and forth with each new gust of wind.. Hubby and the neighbor managed to drag the whole monstrosity back across the road and up their driveway and left it where it used to sit. (I actually recorded the whole thing on my iPhone but forgot to save it before I got rid of that phone, I should have uploaded it to YouTube or something because you had to see it to believe it) 😲

The thing that Axel is climbing on looks similar other than there's no canvas, it gives me the creeps because it looks very high for a small child to climb on... If he fell off he could easily break bones... I think in this case Maddie should have put her foot down and told Axel not to climb up that high... You can't just let little kids do whatever they want but I suspect that Maddie didn't feel like dealing with another Axel tantrum and meltdown.

Maddie did a Q&A in her stories. Here’s one:

D4BAA850-48C4-4DD5-B87C-477164A9C1CF.jpeg

I don't believe it.  The answer is too vague, and she has never posted any evidence of her taking classes or even having interest in doing so.  She completed either one semester or one year of college some 5-6 years ago, maybe.  So her completed coursework would have been in general education requirements, pre-major, if her credits could even transfer to this unidentified school where she's majoring in some subject.

Maddie forgot that COVID has required colleges to refine how they deliver coursework and that her infant daughter has serious health issues.  Both are significant, ongoing challenges with major impacts on time and money.  Finally, she forgot that she declared that she wanted to go to law school to be the first polygamist justice of the US Supreme Court.  Wouldn't that desire resonate more, as RBG lies in state?

Maddie's just like her father and her Strong Women sister-wife mothers.

Back when she was in Vegas shilling LLR, she said she was going to night school to get her midwife or nursing degree.

Maddie sorely lacks follow-through.

Back when the family were gearing up to have polygamy decriminalized is around the same time Maddie had aspirations to become a Lawyer, Judge, then on to the Supreme Court.  All to win "Brownie" points and be the family champion.

When she was pregnant with Axel, was when she expressed interest in becoming a Midwife or Doula, probably because pregnancy and delivery consumed her every thought at that time.  I was quite surprised that she didn't intend to become a bridal consultant after seeing the way she organized her own wedding with military precision.

Many young people switch horses in midstream as they delve into what they originally thought would be their chosen vocation, but Maddie doesn't seem able to get her horse further than ankle deep in the stream yet.

JMO and I could be wrong but I'll be surprised if Maddie does anything further with her education.

She's gotten quite a few comments since she dropped everything married Caleb and started having kids rather than being a supreme court justice *eyeroll*... give me a break....  I think she's just saying that to keep people from commenting.... Maddie is like Janelle a lot of talk and no action.

I don't think she has any idea how much work it will be to wrangle her kids who both have health issues and go back to school while her husband is working out of town most the time.

I agree, and I think that her comment reflects sibling rivalry, especially with Mykelti.  All her group of siblings, except for Mykelti, has gotten their college degrees.  Logan and Mariah are finishing graduate degrees.  Also, the siblings closest to Maddie's age are married or in committed relationships.  (Notice that there's no competition going on in the career sector.)  The only distinction that Maddie owned was being the one who has produced grandchildren for Kody.  But, now Mykelti's pregnant.  So, Maddie has to keep up by claiming that she's enrolled in some educational program that awards degrees.

Others can speak better on the Maddie-Mykelti wedding rivalry, but I think that the two of them are in direct competition with each other.

Of course there’s nothing wrong with being a SAHM, but these days most women that choose to do that have some sort of education or skill to bring in income if they had to. Since Maddie got married so young, and started having kids so young, you’d think she would consider getting some training or education sooner rather than later.

Yes I understand she has two small children, one with health issues but if she wanted to she could be doing something to further her education. I don’t think she is.

Maddie has a Facebook site, Lace and Lemons where she sells clothing and accessories.  I don't think it's an MLM, it seems to be overstock from manufacturers.  She was quite active in the beginning, then nothing for June or July.  She had a spurt of activity in August, posting 20 times, then nothing at all so far in September.  At the end of August, one potential customer asked if she had an "app" yet and Maddie responded "not yet, it's in the works though".

Possibly, she doesn't have to maintain inventory for L & L, it may be drop-shipped directly from the manufacturer or clearing house when she gets an order from a fan, but if not, I can just imagine the crowded conditions of a sea of polyester as she still may have unsold LLRoe stock.

It seems to me that she is just spinning her wheels trying to capitalize on her "fame" from the show, by engaging in these online marketing ventures.  I don't know how many credits toward a degree she accumulated in the brief time she did attend university, but she may have been better off building credits online toward an eventual goal (if she does have a goal in mind).

It's that pesky "M" thingk.  Meri, Mariah, Maddie, and Mykelti are all annoying to me, in different ways.

For the record, my first initial is M, but...I'm not a BrownClown, so it doesn't count! 😛

The Brown family is overly laid back when it comes to the safety of children. I remember the kids climbing boulders with Robyn running after hers and squawking about danger. Janelle was laughing and hand waving any concerns.

There’s a lot about Kody, a ranch kid, that reminds me of farmers. I had a friend with four boys. She was a farmer’s daughter and her husband was a farmer for a time. They had a zip line in the yard and her nephew fell and broke his arm.  Privately, she thought he was a bit of a weakling. Now this woman is a very compassionate nurse, but they’re raised more to stand back and let the kids be kids - bruises and broken bones are a part of life.

I’m a worrier by nature. I’m afraid I was more a helicopter mom to the cousin I raised.
