S02.E01: London Calling

Recommended Posts

I wish they wouldn't Bravoize this show and focus on petty drama and squabbles. I watch this show for the real estate porn. I'm also a sucker for a British accent. Caroline S and Annabelle could read cereal boxes and I would be riveted.

Juliet is dreadful, as is her ridiculous, albeit ridiculously expensive, wardrobe. If England decides to stop being our ally and declares war with the U.S., it will be because we inflicted her upon them. I'm so sorry, UK.

Oh no we have done worse to the Brits...... Celebrity Big Brother, Farrah Abrams and Jenna Jamison. I'm so embarrassed by them.

If Juliet wanted a home Thanksgiving she could have cooked the whole damn thing for her family at her home! How's that for celebrating your birthday??? She exhausted me tonight. So self-centered. Enjoy the fact that you have a meal/ party to go to on your birthday.

Sounds like Marissa has a tradition of hosting Thanksgiving and she already had made plans. She was accommodating Juliet with the cake, etc. Then Juliet had to drag in Caroline and somehow got Caroline to host the dinner???!!! Ack.

So far I like Julie and Marissa the most.

Is there another Caroline joining the show?

I was confused with the whole Thanksgiving/birthday thing, and when Juliet and Caroline were having one conversation, Juliet makes a comment like "I always envisioned Thanksgiving/my birthday dinner in a typical suburban house (BIG dramatic pause).....like YOURS".  She basically was asking/shaming Caroline into hosting a dinner party for a holiday that she doesn't even celebrate!!  And enough with the "But it's my birthday AND Thanksgiving"....you're a grown women - accept the fact that your annual birthday (unless a milestone) doesn't have to be as important as a major American holiday!

I also wonder if Juliet is living in a new home that she may be slightly embarrassed about.  I believe she mentioned that her husband took a new job and they moved to new "digs", so maybe their new home is smaller than their previous one, in a less desirable area, without a fancy address?

Marissa also annoys me, and Caroline was correct in her assessment of Marissa thinking she is "Martha fucking Stewart".  Does anyone think that ANY of these women, especially Caroline, would wear a monogramed turkey butt hat during dinner?  THAT was ridiculous, and bringing those hats to the cocktail party was just a dig at Caroline, because her dinner will be upstaging Marissa's, in Marissa's eyes.

I'm glad this show is back, just because I love the fact that most of the women, especially Caroline, are just sooo completely elitist and snobbish - unapologetically. In fact, just the opposite - they seem to embrace their status and attitudes!     :-)

I think Marissa kind of looks like a mess all-over. She exudes frumpiness in wardrobe and styling even as she's interpersonally OCD. She, Jules, and Juliet were aesthetic trainwrecks at the Mapperton getaway back in the day with the "scullery maid" outfit, etc. . . Although there was considerably less manufactured conflict on this program last season relative to the banshee-like free-for-alls and physical brawls that have come to define the Housewives franchise, I don't think that ThanksgivingGate represented too stark of a tonal departure. Weren't multiple episodes devoted to games of telephone and petty squabbling in year one pertaining to Caprice and Caroline's ire over who had worse manners and the details of Cap's baby shower? . . . I was initially ambivalent about Julie - in her first appearances, she seemed transparently eager for camera time and almost starry-eyed over the attention; she also had horribly dehydrated and limp hair last summer. I also sense a possible propensity for unnecessary histrionics per the preview footage of her hyperventilating over Caroline's bitchiness. But, compared to her cast mates, she does telegraph as the most unpretentious - appreciate that she doesn't outsource her family responsibilities and is actually hands-on with respect to such a large brood of children.

The storyline about Caroline's business being so flooded with orders is foreshadowing - the business eventually has to be sold due to pressure from her creditors!  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2962380/SEBASTIAN-SHAKESPEARE-Andrew-s-ex-hits-slopes-firm-hits-buffers.html

I'm confused. I thought Marissa was having Thanksgiving in the restaurant; then Juliet said she preferred Thanksgiving at home and that it was also her birthday. THEN Marissa said, "I'll make you a birthday cake," but she said it in such a nasty way I would have told her to fuck off. Marissa didn't want to do anything for Juliet, she wanted to have Thanksgiving HER way. I don't like Marissa for some reason.

Marissa said she makes the food at home and they eat at her restaurant since it can accommodate more people. I can see where Juliet was coming from. One of my best things about Thanksgiving is the ambience and the smells. Even though the food would be homemade, serving at a restaurant kind of detracts from it. However, either go or rescind the invitation, no need to make a big deal about it.

Does anyone know the name and singer/group of the song in the Ladies of London ad? I'm desperate for it for the treadmill!

London Bridge by Fergie

If Marissa's thing is annual, does this shit storm happen annually too? Why was this year such a big deal for Juliet?

Because they weren't filming at Thanksgiving last year so it's the first time Juliet has been invited? That whole thing was such bs on Juliet's part. As if the invite hadn't specified where they were to arrive?

I'm curious about the Viscount now...scurrying to Google...

Aw, that's too bad. She mentioned a new business called The Wedding Shop and based on the website, it's a wedding registry site. I guess she likes working in the gift business.

I don't hate Caroline, but I would like her so much more if she would drop some of her pretensions. It's like, you're on a reality TV show, lady. You spent a lot of time last season palling around with a D-list underwear model. You can drop the holier-than-thou, "British society is so closed off" act. I don't think Queen Elizabeth is coming round to yours for tea.

I know what you mean. For me, it's kind of endearing that Caroline acts haughty at times, but obviously hangs out with a few low-rent people.  ;-)

It's just now dawning on me that we have a Julie and a Juliet.

It's hilarious when two women are snarling at each other yet sneak in a quivery-voiced "I love you and I wanted to do this for you...."

I can't take the aristocratic pretense too seriously when all of these folks are on an American reality TV show, undoubtedly with hands held out for that Bravo paycheck, as well as any marketing opportunities. I wonder if all of them are hurting for money. Caroline's business failed, Juliet alluded to downsizing, and the viscount's ancestral digs cost buckets of money to maintain.

ETA: Juliet and Marissa are confusing "I really, really want something" with "things that are really important."

I just can't with people who have the "look at MEEEEE" mentality about their birthday.  Juliet didn't bother me much in the first season but with this one episode I found her insufferable.

Oh, and Caroline S?  Time to get your ego in check as alluding to your younger self as being "hot" is not only untrue it's laughable.  You're attractive but nothing to write home about.

Seems to me this show is going to suffer from the typical reality sophomore slump when the participants are now very aware of the cameras and do whatever it takes to remain relevant and play a role.

I don't believe in curses, but, boy, oh, boy; when I think about what some of the Bravo women have experienced, after appearing on these shows... So many divorces, Caroline's business, Noelle's fiancé. I hadn't read anything about Noelle's fiancé until I read it here yesterday. Quite sad and shocking.

Not sure if this has been commented on already, but Caroline said to Marissa - I may be blonder and skinnier.  Did anyone else catch that?  It was when Marissa and Juliet were arguing in her foyer.

Also, when Luke was doing her makeup prior to her cocktail party.  HOLY MOLY!  That was CAKED on.  My pores were crying.

I am torn on Julie.  I follow her on instagram and she seems so vastly different on the show.  I like that she does it all herself though.  Very refreshing especially compared to Caroline.

I thought she was saying it to Marissa. Super rude. Also stupid because Marissa's hair looks a whole lot better than Caroline's sometimes-straw-colored (what was up with that wretched lighting?) mess with needlessly obvious roots. (Are they both dirty blond naturally? Looks that way to me.)

That cocktail party looked so boring. Why were they are just standing around in a cluster in a room with no furniture? Need some more furniture to fill up that 12,000 sq. ft. house, I guess.

I really liked Caroline last season, but maybe I'm just tired of her schtick by now... I don't actually find it comical when someone outsources all parenting activities to the point of sending the nanny to her daughter's recital, or whatever it was. What does she even do all day at this point? Just orders others around, I assume. Oh well, I still find her more entertaining than the rest of them.

OK, wait a minute.  I knew something was up when Duck-face was trying so hard to shove this phony-baloney crap at us that her biz is doing so well & she's such a fab business-lady.  Idk, something smelled stinky to me.  Wasn't buying it.  So is Duck-face the British Bethenny?  Well, apparently not.

So this from the DM piece gave me a wicked giggle-

"Prince Andrew’s rumoured old flame Caroline Stanbury makes light of the fact her staff keep a dartboard in the office with her face on it, but no doubt it has been getting plenty of use this week."

What the what?  Um, Duck-face's staff throws darts at pics of her duck-face mug?  Oh my!  Just what is she doing to them which motivates them to do that?  Hmmmmm.

And from the other piece-

"Luxury home and interiors web site Amara has acquired rival site Gift Library which collapsed several weeks ago.

Gift-Library.com, which employed around 60 staff, hit the buffers when creditors called in administrators after bills were left unpaid.

The site’s owner and founder Caroline Stanbury was on holiday skiing with friends including Chloe Green, the daughter of Topshop clothing magnate Sir Philip Green, as the firm floundered."

OK then, volumes spoken about who Duck-face is, eh?  And no, she sure ain't the British Bethenny.  No, no, no.  Oh, if she's gonna be shoveling that crap at us all season long, this is gonna get real good!

Wow, Juliet is seriously riding a nerve.

That is Juliet's shtick, isn't it?  Whenever she's on cam, I ALWAYS expect her to start bawling & jump up & down, & stamp her feet, like a 4 year old throwing a tantrum would do.  Juliet is never anything other than shrill & annoying & yet I don't hate her.  Not sure why.

Annabelle?  Ugh, less Annabelle is a good thing.  I do like the woman's style & I'm glad for her that she's doing so much better since her accident, but man, she is depressing as fuck, aint she?  Seems like the only facial expressions she's capable of are sneers or frowns.  Yeesh, the woman is not exactly oozing fun.

I appreciated the contrast between Julie, who damn near burned herself making hot chocolate for her kids, and Caroline, who looks like she can't even be bothered to pencil her kids into her schedule. I like her, but I hope she's not as absent as she appears.

I liked Julie's kids but is the hair color of her twins natural?  If they were older I would have assumed their hair was dyed but they seem young for that.  Something about the blond color looked too yellow.

Almost all of the blonde people on the show last night seemed to have oddly yellow hair to me. Maybe it's something to do with the lighting?

I thought her hair looked really weird as well during the hot chocolate scene.  But now I remember when they were outside her hair was like a white blonde so the lighting in their house must be really funky and makes them all look like they have yellow hair.

I don't understand how this Thanksgiving think hasn't been an issue prior to filming?  Were Juliet and Marissa not friends for previous Thanksgivings?

I get Juliet's side but at the same time you can't tell someone to change their plans that they do EVER year AFTER they've already invited 30+ people.

That sort of Thanksgiving wouldnt be my idea of a good time either but I wouldn't expect them to cater to me.

Maybe Juliet's husband was going to be away for work and that's why she was having a fit?

You're giving her way too much credit.  She doesn't need much (or any) excuse to throw a fit -- especially when the cams are around.  Now, is she playing this tantrum-throwing crapola for the cams or is she actually this way?  Seems to me that's who she is at her core.  Must be draining to fret & throw tantrums over such stupid trivial stuff every 2 seconds.  Doesn't seem to bother her.  I kinda would like to see Annabelle squash her like a bug (again) when Juliet is throwing her next predictable 800 fits/tantrums.  All Annabelle really has to do is shoot Juliet one of her steely frowns or sneers & that'll do it nicely.

I don't get these childish (Imo) feelings for Thanksgiving from people who beelined to another country to try to be "fancy" lol. But then I think most American holidays have become ridiculous and way too materialistic. And nothing seems to,cause more family strife than Thanksgiving anyway, where to have, who brings what, whose stuffing will be chosen, pies best, etc...ugh. I would rather fill a plate and eat in my room to be honest. Julia or Juliette, whoever, was acting like an idiot. But I really don't like Marissa, she is way too much of a wanna be and tries way too hard. Seems like she will agree with almost anything if a British person says it.

Yes, it can come off as a bit disingenuous.  My sister lives in London and acts all kinds of sad and teary when we send photos of our family at Thanksgiving, 4th of July, etc.  It's super annoying.  We're not crying when she's sending us pictures of her in Scotland/France/Germany/Spain, even if we're jealous of her experiences.  I mean, shut up, you live in fucking London.

Not trying to be argumentative but this is exactly why I DON'T get Juliet's side.  She's been invited to a seemingly established event - either accept or decline with thanks.  I have a friend who lived away for several years, and she would always cook a Thanksgiving dinner and invite her Russian friends, and I would assume the guest list remained relatively stable with a few newbies or people dropped each year.  If I showed up, I would expect to be told that "this is what we do for Thanksgiving, and I'll get you a birthday cake as well."  (Yes, it's my birthday too :)

I actually just discovered this show last week, when my DVR recorded a BH First Look, which turned out to be LVP shilling this show.  So I taped all of the last-season reruns and watched them, then checked out the forum here, to be ready for season 2.  Juliet has been my least favorite from the first.  The more I watch her the pointier her face seems to get.  And Annabelle - ugh.  But I love the scenery and houses etc.  I was in London with a group in July and we had a guide who pointed out where the nice areas were and how much homes/rent cost.  I wish I had seen this show before going! And Julie kind of reminds me of the Marisa that was on RHBH for one season - no matter how much money/titles/etc. those girls have, they have a "trailer park" aura that I can't not see.  But she seems like a nice lady (unlike BH's Marisa) and she certainly brings it with the country estate!  I think this might be my new favorite show!  (Until Survivor starts, of course :)

Hilarious princelina! I love my Bravo shows but nothing trumps Survivor for me too.

It's just now dawning on me that we have a Julie and a Juliet.

I know, I feel the same, but in my case it's because Julie made zero impression on me last year. I do remember thinking she lucked out marrying into that estate but today when I saw she had four kids I was totally confused. Did she have four kids last year? Or did she buy them for the show?  I'm sorry to hear her husband is ill.

As for annoying Juliet, I can see her emotional point of view, but she's fighting a lost cause if she wants to replicate that afternoon football on the tv, turkey cooking in the oven smell, fall leaves on the ground, sitting around like a beached whale afterwards Thanksgiving feel in London.  And, if Thanksgiving is just a regular work day in London where is Juliet going to be all day anyway since Caroline HAS to work  (its in her blood you know!). Wouldn't it just be better for Juliet to cook a turkey in her own home and make memories for herself and kids there?

I know, I know, BUT if they show tons of gorg British house porn, I'm still gonna be in.  This Thanksgiving stuff is white noise I can mute.

There is no argument that can make me turn off these British backdrops. I don't care how insipid it gets.  So it seems as if Juliet had to downgrade her home too? Why can't these Bravo stars keep their money?  There should be a clause that if you move into a smaller house you are off the show as I am watching to see a lifestyle I don't have access to in my own life.  A lifestyle like that cold-hearted Caroline shows us. I would never want to be friends with Caroline but she is a great cast member.  "My toast please!"

I guess I am the oddball, I just can't stand adults fussing over their own birthdays or holidays, like children. You are meant to create your own traditions, Imo ,when you grow up and marry, and if they are that vital to your well-being, stick to them and turn down invitations that don't mesh with your needs. You don't accept and then whine and pout. Good grief. Grow the F up. Juliet has really annoyed me from the start, she is obnoxious.

I don't see why Marissa didn't just say, "I'm happy for you to come to my party, but if you would prefer to do things more in line with your own traditions, we can just go out for birthday drinks the next day." I think that might have shut Juliet up and saved us from another season of party drama!

I truly just do not see anything that's right about Juliet's perspective.  She wants to have a traditional Thanksgiving, her way- but since she doesn't cook and doesn't want to have it at her house she needs someone else to facilitate it and do it exactly how she wants it?  I don't think so.  If you want to have a special holiday and do it with your traditions, then host one.

Well, you've taken the sensible perspective, which most of us would do in real life.  BUT this is Housewives/Bravo territory, so you kinda have to go along with the logic that always seems to follow there -- which usually includes fighting over stupid trivial nonsense and/or promoting whatever dumb shit you wanna promote.  Here, we've gotten both shoved at us.

This is Juliet's shtick -- to find something/anything to whine & cry & throw a tantrum over &  generally act like a misbehaved child.  Guess she found it with this bullshit about Thanksgiving.  And I'm giving a side-eye to Marissa.  I think she would have "normally" just shrugged this nonsense quickly off.  BUT she probably wanted to promote the food in her restaurant, which would certainly have been featured, even if the Thanksgiving gathering was in her house.

Now, I have been abroad during Thanksgiving & I must admit I missed the family celebration & the food, but sheesh, not at all the way Juliet is whining about it.  As usual, she's acting like she's five years old, instead of an adult woman.  To me, it's so OTT, if I encountered someone who actually did whine this way, I'd assume she has major mental health issues -- or she's just a major PITA.  But I guess this is a given for anyone inhabiting Bravo/Housewives land, eh?

Except that it was clearly stated in the grocery store outing that Marissa is cooking the main meal at her house herself.  And Julie is making pies.  That's why they were all meeting at the grocery store...to shop for the dinner.  The reason why it's held at Bumpkin instead of in Marissa's home is because they're able to use the private dining room.  The dinner has gotten larger over the years and they no longer have enough room in their home to host it there.  I see nothing wrong with them utilizing their own restaurant's private dining room.

I don't really care a great deal for Marissa, there's just something about her that rubs me the wrong way, but I have to side with her on this "issue".  She has created this tradition for her family and friends and it seems as though all the ladies were invited to be a part of it and accepted.  If Juliet had such a problem with it not being a "traditional" Thanksgiving dinner, then she should have declined the invite from the get-go.  Instead she accepts it, agrees to meet with the women to shop for the meal and decides then to throw a big stink about it being done "Marissa's way".  Yeah Juliet, because it's her friggin' Thanksgiving dinner that she was gracious enough to invite you to!!!  Honestly, if I was Marissa, I'd be pissed too.

Oh and Caroline?  They weren't fighting over you as you like to think.  They were arguing over the manner in which the second Thanksgiving dinner at your house came to be.  Which Juliet lied about to Marissa.  Caroline did not just offer up her house for it.  Juliet asked her to host it.

So yeah, I'm completely Team Marissa.  Juliet bugs me to no end and would be exhausting to be around.

Oh, so Marissa offered to have the Thanksgiving thing at her restaurant?  Well, seems even more like a way to promote the place on cam, right?  Doesn't bother me.  And what's the big deal whether she has it there or at home?  The restaurant looks really nice.  Once again, Juliet's whining makes no sense & she's throwing a tantrum over ridiculous nonsense.  And yeah, she's not just childish & annoying, but she was very cagey, two-faced & cunning in this situation.

According to Marissa's TH, they've been hosting their Thanksgiving dinner at their restaurant for the last few years because the guest list got so big.  And yeah, I see no problem with them hosting their dinner in their restaurant.  If it's not intimate enough for you Juliet, don't go!  Simple as that.  Such a ridiculous thing to make a fight out of.

During her tantrum at Caroline's, Juliet literally demands to know why Marissa had the temerity to maintain the tradition of inviting all of her non-cast mate friends to the dinner at Bumpkin. So I think her laments about the personal significance of the holiday were just a pretext; she was pissed that that event was not primarily a birthday party for her and an actual Thanksgiving fete secondarily. Thus her determination to make the gathering about her regardless by pitching her hissy fits. I have to assume fourth wall considerations factored in here because I don't understand how Marissa - who is irritating but by all apparent evidence doesn't suffer from a mental health disorder - could remain friends with Juliet if she behaved this way all of the time. She's like the Vicki Gunvalson of London by way of Chicago.

Pretty sure Vicki's from Chicago, originally, so there's that.

Well, Idk, Juliet doesn't squeal & screech -- well, at least not to the deafening pitch Vicks does.  And no mention of family vans from her, so . . .

Btw, er, Bumpkin?  WTF is up with that name?

I didn't get the feeling Marissa was trying to show off her restaurant, because it's already heavily featured regardless, plus I don't think this show is a big deal in London, so it wouldn't add much value. She was pretty up front about it from the beginning--they aren't eating Bumpkin food, she's cooking at home and simply using her restaurants private dining room. Even if Juliet's point had value, the way she handled it and continued making it an issue was immature and took away from the issue at hand. I couldn't have any sympathy for her the way she was acting. I didn't like her last season, but I don't recall it being a major issue. This year she seems completely out of place and like she's going to be a nightmare to deal with.

Wow, what is it with how crazy yellow Caroline's hair looks?  Is it the lighting?  And Marissa's color looks so washed out, frumpy & ugh.  What's going on with the hair on these women?  I thought London gals were supposed to have awesome hair.  Not seeing it in this bunch.  Ew.

Hey, Caroline gave me a giggle when she was reminiscing about her party days when she says she was hot -- OK, maybe in her mind she was hot.  Ah, but we don't have Caprice around anymore to brag about the men she thinks are still jerking off to her pics, er, when she was supposedly hot -- a billion years ago.  Oh, how it made me howl when Caprice said that.  This stuff from Caroline merely gave me a slight giggle.  Eh, at least duck-face Caroline seems more self-aware than deluded ridiculous Caprice.  Caroline did say in a TH that she knows people think she's a cold fish.  Er, maybe for good reason?  Ya think?

Even when you live in a cool place, it can still be hard when you see all the family together celebrating the holidays. You miss the family and the shared experience.

But I still think Juliet was OTT about the holiday and her BIRTHDAY!! Lol

True, but speaking as a person who lived abroad for several years through out Asia, one's ex-pat circle of friends become one's surrogate family and the group(s) gets together to share common holidays from their home countries.  One does not lack.  Back in the day I can think of two countries I lived in where having an oven was almost non-existent (in addition to being a true luxury item!) and we still figured out ways to bake turkey, pies, rolls, ham, etc.   Its not the end of the world.  I mean ...

If Juliet chose not to be a drama queen she could have done her family Thanksgiving celebration in her own home the weekend before (or after) Thanksgiving and gone to Marissa's shindig the day it was held at Bumpkin.  Do both.  Celebrate twice and have an amazing time,  Life is short.  And um, Juliet?  I know you're creating drama for a storyline on a television show, but God forbid, if your tantruming is real, re evaluate.  If who's going to host Thanksgiving is the most bone-crushing obstacle in your orbit then you've got a pretty good GD life going on.  There are millions running around with no food, no clothing, no money, no jobs, and zero options during the holiday season.

Better yet,  simmer the fuck down, take your kids over to the local homeless shelter in your area and show your children a day of true service and selflessness.  This alone would do more for them than any Thanksgiving meal cooked at home while vegging out, comatose, in front of a sports game ever could.  Volunteer serving meals to those in need.

There you go.  I've just given you the REAL MEANING OF THANKSGIVING.  Now you can pass that shit on to UK Caroline who said she didn't even know what the hell Thanksgiving was.  When Caroline asked you to explain the point behind the Thanksgiving holiday, the insufferable, self-centered, stupid-assed explanation you spit out literally made my eyes roll into the back of my head.

Jesus Christo.  No wonder everyone hates Americans.

Both of my parents are naturalized Americans, Thanksgiving is hugely important to them and my siblings. I tend to find that first and second generation Americans believe Thanksgiving is more important than Americans whose families have been in the US longer. I think it's because Thanksgiving feels a lot like an old fashioned traditional ethnic celebration - just food and family. I'd like to believe that Juliet only made a stink Beverly they were filming and that most years she'd just stay home. Juliet's insistance that Caroline have another Thanksgiving at her house is bullshit.

That cracked me up! My auto correct always changed because to Beverly too, I ended up turning auto correct off.
