Flipoid:

a.  Welcome!

b. "I knew the FJ answer because I used to read a bunch of romances in which a good portion of the story took place in the Netherlands." - were those Betty Neels Harlequin romances?

I didn't think Matt was all that bad but contestants have to be pretty odd before I even notice.  I thought Alan was more annoying.

Did not get FJ, despite also having read those romances.  I came up with the Anne Frank museum.

The Rijksmuseum has a lot of Rembrandt's work plus a lot of Dutch artists who aren't Van Gogh. I've been to Amsterdam a few times and it's kind of like their National Gallery. But if you haven't been to Europe or aren't particularly into art museums, then it's probably not common knowledge like the Louvre or the Hermitage.

I thought fondly of the hour I spent worshipping in front of The Night Watch in the spring of 1995.  The Rijksmuseum was the whole reason I went to Amsterdam.  (Yes, I know, I know.)

Matt and his robot bitch face can leave now.  Yes, at least they've been clearing the board since he arrived, but although I didn't mind him at first but he pissed me off with the whole "smack my fist into the other palm" DD celebration; that had to be planned because it really didn't look spontaneous at all.  Okay, he's not Talia the Turd or Dancing Jennifer, but he's so freaking humorless.

I once went to Chicago just to see A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.  Great art is always worth a trip:-)   I knew the answer but I don't think I would have been close enough in my spelling for it to be a right answer.

The number of just stupid answers last night was painful to watch.

OK, I have to admit, for FJ I hesitantly guessed The Hague. I wasn't sure if it was a museum or the seat of government. I'm a dum-dum.

That pissed me off too. However, I don't think it was planned. His demeanor just makes it look that way.

For some reason Matt reminds me of Kenny "that's gold, Jerry, GOLD" Banya

Good one!

He reminds me of the oldest Goldberg son, Barry, for some reason.

That other guy last night though, don't remember his name, but could he move that buzzer back and forth any faster? I was getting seasick.

I think if it wasn't for the starting in the middle/board hopping, I could get used to Matt. He seems to have dialed down the intensity a bit, and anyone who can shut Alex up works for me.

That's on my list.  I once drove all the way across Puerto Rico, from San Juan to Ponce, to see "Flaming June."

As an FYI, the major art museum in The Hague is the Mauritshuis (which I know because I want to go someday because that's where The Girl With a Pearl Earring is).

Really?  I thought he calmed down quite a bit.  I don't mind him anymore.  He is smart and he's there to play.  I don't like runaway games but you can't fault him for that.  I wish Alex would stop trying to get him to smile.

I thought Matt's story about proofreading a friend of the court brief filed in the SCOTUS was amusing and showed a sense of humor not seen before. this was the first time I saw him and he didn't seem as intense as described here.

.  I wish Alex would stop trying to get him to smile.

He might as well stop trying. Because M. can't smile; he can only grimace. And smirk. And fist pump. And generally appear to "not be having any fun unless I win at all costs." The most unpleasant contestant I've even seen on the program. But then, I always have preferred the more-pleasant people. On any show! In life!

PS: Gotta watch the buzzer-waving, over-dancing and drumsticks, of course!

My personal pet peeve is people who say, "Smile! Ah, give me a SMILE!" I want to smack them and tell them I'm not their monkey put on this earth to please them. So leave me the eff alone.

And generally appear to "not be having any fun unless I win at all costs."

I'd look the same as Matt because I wouldn't be having any fun if I were on Jeopardy and being out buzzed by everyone, then answer questions incorrectly if I ever did win the buzzer race. You guys would all make fun of me here for my non-smiling loser face. And I'll take a fist pump and quick category requests any day over, "Ah, I'll take Last Category On The Board, Please, for 200 dollars, please, Alex ..." Or "Turd Ferguson." Or dancing during intros.

Me, I'm all for Matt and am rooting for him to be on for the next several weeks, playing those runaway games I love. I like you, Matt. Don't pay any attention to this tough room.

Matt looks like the silent film villain who gets to close down the orphanage.  All he needs is a mustache to twirl!

Matt is quickly becoming my personal hero. He is there to dominate, and be kind of a dork. And he is doing a spectacular job of both.

When the woman today answered "evergreen" in the "'C' In Science" category, I totally facepalmed. My Jeopardy! pet peeve is when people don't pay attention to the constraints of the category.

Matt's biggest runaway yet! I thought Dennis might beat him based on the first few minutes, but he never seemed to recover from missing that DD Jesus question.

The only TS that surprised me today was Maria Montessori. Whenever you hear "Italian" and "education" in the same clue, she's the one.

Tough FJ, I thought. I remembered U Thant, because I was so fascinated by his name as a kid--who else has a one-letter first name?--but forgot where he was from.

I'm not a fist pumper but the genuine smile Matt had after doing it warmed my cold, dark heart. He's won me over. I'm expecting a plague of frogs any minute now.

Love and Rockets gets a Jeopardy question but it's a TS. Damn.

Matt looked like the epitome of evil when he grimaced at the end. I'm trying to like him because he's so darned smart, but the creepiness factor is just too thick.

I was surprised by the TS - Amazon, baby pandas and coniferous.

Let's not even go there with FJ...

I was really surprised he bet $10,000 in FJ.  He had 30,000 for Pete's sake.  That seemed a little greedy to me.  Maybe he was trying to beat some kind of daily record.  Does anyone know what the record is for a single day's winnings?

I know Roger Craig got something close to $75,000 in one show. Not sure if that's the record but it's up there.

ETA: Roger does hold the record but it was $77,000.

I was sad about that as well. Plus, they failed to mention that it was/is also a comic book!  I was surprised at the FJ wager as well. I think he just got ahead of himself? He really was on a roll. I'm enjoying Matt. No wasted time and no wasted guessing!

It did amuse me that Alex was trying to get Matt to sound all altruistic and Matt was like "you know what? I might just blow some of this cash on frivolity."

LOL! The most uncomfortable dinner party ever! And after dinner: rapid fire charades!

I said Myanmar! Holy shit.

Sorry, I was on Matt's side but not after the "boom." I can handle a fist pump, but noise sounds like gloating. Especially since he didn't know coniferous. Settle down, kid.

Same here, minus the apology. Since we're all entitled to our opinions and come here to share them, I won't apologize for liking or disliking a contestant, nor will I expect any of you to.

I really liked that band sports team name category. I wasn't sure what it was going to be, but once they got into it, I thought it was great. Sports and music are strong categories for me (despite my lack of knowledge about The Band) so I ran this one. I though this missing letter category had potential but was way too easy.

Anyone else completely relieved to see a New York Times category that wasn't all video clues featuring its writers? I hate video clues read by other people, so I was thrilled these were read by Alex.

I cringed when I saw that category and was so relieved it wasn't the writers asking the questions.

It was an insta-get for me, but I grew up literally in the shadow of the United Nations. It was hard to miss things like Dag Hammarskjold Plaza and U Thant Island in the East River. I said Burma, because I've never heard it called Myanmar when referencing him.

Trivia: His name was actually "Thant" -- just Thant. "U" means "Mr."

Thanks to M. Darcy and her post about The Girl with the Pearl Earring, I got the Vermeer question.

I noticed that Alex didn't even bother pointing out the category when the woman gave "evergreen" in C in Science.  Usually he does.

Re FJ, I was pretty sure it was Burma (or Myanmar) but not absolutely positive.

Or would it be that ironic smirk on your dog avatar?  If you've ever wondered why I show up as a visitor on your profile every day, it's because I have to look at him and laugh -- again and again.

I'm getting into Matt.  Yes, he's obnoxious but I think Alex hates him and that's always fun.

You think Alex hates him? I haven't really thought about that or noticed anything. I know Alex called him impressive, which he is.

Maybe if I watch through the lens of Alex hating him I'll enjoy his run a little more!

And now I've decided that Matt's voice is kinda whiny.  I'm just impossible to please.

So you mean there is no Carson Thant?

Or would it be that ironic smirk on your dog avatar?

Judy, you totally just cracked me up. I chose that avatar photo because of the dog's smirk, I find it hilarious but no one else seems to notice. I've used that photo in other places, including dog publications, and you are the first to comment. I award you 10 daily double wins! Thanks for my morning laugh and a much-needed cheer up. BTW, when I took the photo I did not notice he was smirking at me until I put it on the computer. And, there it was.

ETA: I almost forgot to say, Matt's three-fingered introduction also made me laugh. For a minute I thought he was doing the Vulcan live-long-and-prosper sign. It would have irritated me if I didn't like him. I guess that's how human nature works. Would love to see Matt against Alex Jacob, another of my favorites.

Matt's obviously smart, and he does keep the game moving, which I like.  But the fist pumps and the "boom" (HK/Macau wasn't that hard of a question anyway--certainly not boom-worthy) and all that really turn me off.  I don't like showboating in any arena, and it seems especially inappropriate in a quasi-intellectual one.

Then again, he's a Jeopardy champion, and I'm not...

None of the young pups knew the Partridge Family clue.  I was an early teen when they were popular.  Sigh.  Break out the prune juice and fiber bars!

Someone should tell El Smirko that it's okay to be happy for a correct answer but fist pumping shows a self-aggrandizing ass who happens to be quick with the buzzer.   I used to play trivia with an ex-friend who bragged to neighboring tables when we won.  Her exaggerated squeals of glee and constant high fives made an outing with friends sheer torture.  For Pete's sake, the grand prize was  a $20.00 certificate at a Mexican restaurant, not the Publishers' Clearing House annuity!  There are sore losers and then there are sore winners.

I was sorry that neither Ezgi nor Greg were able to derail the MAtt Juggernaut.  Matt's habit of talking over Alex is just rude.   As far as I'm concerned, the only thing I like about Matt (aside from the fact that he really does know a lot) is that he actually claps for other contestants on the rare occaisions when they get a DD.

Sorry, but I'm just not going to watch until there is a new champ.  I didn't mind watching Ken J. or my beloved Julia win night after night becuase they had personality and charm.  Watching Matt just isn't fun.

I'm so happy they started with the NFL category. And Tom Brady was the lowest valued question.

But I really really wanted one of the Mannings to be a question because Matt kept giving only the last name. And Greg did too with Flacco.

I thought Greg was going to have a shot but alas it was not to be.

I am still loving Matt! I actually love that he talks over Alex. Alex is never saying anything interesting, he is just trying to add more to the answer to show how smart he is (i.e. how good he is at being fed information via earpiece or something).

Starting to become more and more convinced that Matt has a photographic memory and has spent many hours looking at Wikipedia. No other way he could know everything like that.

I think Alex forgot too. There was a long pause before she was ruled incorrect, and it seemed like he was looking to the judges to determine. Really, because of the category, it shouldn't have required intervention from the judges.

I definitely had the same thought about Matt having a photographic memory. He has such a wide knowledge base.

Apparently that doesn't extend to TV, though. Granted, most (if not all) of those shows were before my time, but even I knew Charmed!!
