Jughead: Because how often do we get to name a thread Jughead?

JUGHEAD JONES | A hearing-impaired actor is being sought to play Jughead as an “emo-heartthrob.” The lanky lad is Archie’s former best friend, seeing as the two still are smarting from a rift that took place between them. Angry, but with a philosophical bent, Jughead “refuses to take the olive branch being proffered by Archie, the hurt goes that deep.”

He'd be more plausible if he did something while sitting around.

Like, when he was just randomly sitting on the steps when Archie approached him, I was like "Why isn't he smoking?"

Then I remembered that texting is the new smoking. So, OK, fine. Why isn't he texting?

Sixteen year old kids do not just sit there, patiently, waiting to say one sentence and then move on.

The actor is not very good. It's such a poor decision to give him the voice over duties, because everything is so flat and lifeless. I remember TWoP's recaps of Band of Brothers, and their criticism of Eion Bailey's voice over work in The Last Patrol, and all of the same problems arise here.

Apart from that, the character just seems silly as well. I'm sure there are plenty of aloof, superior, smug asshole kids who think they're so much better than their classmates because they read Faulkner or Melville, but generally they're not going to also be part of the cool kids group with the hot girls and the town star.

And I'll say it again, give him a real human name if you want me to consider him a real human. 'Jughead' is a name for a cartoon character.

Yeah, but then you wouldn't get to hear "Juggie" every other future episode!!!

Sarcasm aside, I've accepted that they won't change the names of these characters because of comics, so we're stuck with Jughead (I mean, they could give him a normal name, but then why would he be called Jughead then?).

If only they could have stuck with his sexuality. Him being asexual would have been a fun challenge for the network to try out, and I think it could have been successful. Plus, being asexual doesn't mean that he would be single forever.

I like the actor. I've been a fan of Cole Sprouse for well over a decade now. I've seen his work and he's gotten a lot better. I mean, he's not fantastic by any means, but he's decent for The CW. He's a lot more interesting than every other single guy on this show, at least. He's brought out the best in Archie and he got a great scene with Betty. I look forward to him interacting with other characters, to see if he makes them interesting.

In fairness, Jughead wasn't always friends with the hot girls and the town star. He was friends with his buddy Archie, who got worked over by the puberty bat, and Archie's next-door neighbor. That's a pretty realistic process. Furthermore, at the beginning of this story he's seemingly estranged from Archie due to the Grundy fiasco, and he gets picked on by the actual cool kids (and honestly, he kind of does fit the media's profile of the person who shoots up a school). It seems like he is just a part of a group of 4 now instead of a group of 3, and he seems acutely aware that he's the odd man out in that group anyway.

On an unrelated note, I had to grin at the mention of burgers. The bottomless appetite of Jughead Jones is one of the few things I remember from my sister's Archie comics.

A few Jughead observations:

  • In the original comics (and maybe other incarnations) Jughead's eyes were always closed. Looking back on that, I assumed it meant he smoked pot or something similar.
  • Jughead has always reminded me of Maynard G. Krebs from The Dobie Gilles Show.
  • Jughead's hat on this show bugs me because it's knit, and I always assumed it was made by cutting up a felt hat with a brim like the kind my businessman father wore to work in the 50s and 60s.

OMG yes! And wow, The Dobie Gilles Show. I used to love that show!

Now I'm imagining Maynard, Jughead and Shaggy hanging out in the back of the Mystery Machine smokin' a doobie and reciting terrible beatnik poetry that Archie will overhear and set to music, because he was in Miss Grundy Porn's VW Bug in the next parking spot at makeout point. lol

Someone should definitely write this fanfic.

No surprise, really, 'cause by all reports, that's who Jughead was based on.

That's what his original hat was in the comics, because that was the style at the time. (No word on onions hanging off of the belt, though.)  The knit cap is no doubt the show's way of keeping the hat design while making it something that modern teenagers might actually wear.

Did you mean to say that Maynard was based on Jughead? Wikipedia says that

Plus, that's the order in which I remember seeing them. ;-)

I just might be one of the few that will say that Cole Sprouse is doing a pretty good job as Jughead, especially with what the show is so far giving him. He is basically the Narrator of the show with a few other things thrown in. Not really much to develop your character on so far. He certainly is not the best actor on the show as I feel that goes to Lili Reinhart who I feel has done a wonderful job every week as Betty Cooper.

I find Cole Sprouse great in the role and he's easily my favorite character. It's weird that he's so unpopular in the forums, but in each episode thread there's no shortage of fangirling over him.

Jughead is my favorite after Betty, which is probably why I love their scene's together. Both because of the actor, Cole is doing great with a difficult task, being the pretentious narrator is no easy job, and because of the storyline. I can't wait to find out more about Juggie, why he was living in the theater, why he doesn't want to be with his dad but seems to have an okay relationship with him. He's just a very interesting character for me.

I'm not sure he has such a solid relationship with FP---and I strongly suspect Juggie's daddy issues stem from him being big on the ethical thing and consequently not liking his dad being the leader of a biker gang.

And he's definitely not unpopular if you go by social media and all the teenage fangirls hangouts like Tumblr. IMO, I think Cole is just fine in the role. This is a CW show that falls in the vein of your typical average teenage show. In other words, I didn't come in expecting some award winning levels of acting.

I take the show for what it is and for what it is, I think Cole does just fine. I'm never bored by his scenes, which I cannot say the same for most of Archie's scenes, I think he and Skeet worked really well together in the last episode, so I found all the angst between he and his dad believable and I like his chemistry with Betty.

I'm not sure he's going to be the next big thing (probably not), but hell, he looks good, he's articulate, and he's already been through the Disney Grinder so he knows what to look out for. (The CW doesn't seem to have the reputation for wayward stars or backstage drama like the WB did, though.) I'm glad Cole's trying to make the leap to adult roles. I wasn't that big of a fan of the Suite Life but I'm enjoying him here.

He kind of nails the pretentious teenager pretty well. It does seem like the show is slowly increasing his storyline and showtime.

I'm not even sure that what he wants----he seems perfectly content as is, has other interests and originally had planned to never return to acting. I thought the Suite Life was stupid, but, again, really enjoy him here.

As for increasing his role, precisely-----with Bughead essentially now moving towards being the show's primary arc and breakout couple. And it works.

It honestly does feel like he got the offer and thought, "Hell, why not?" He's done with college and he might as well see if this goes anywhere. It's a good choice- it doesn't require heavy lifting acting-wise, and it allows him to mature a little bit beyond Disney. And honestly, with his babyface, he's not really going to get offered adult roles.

His brother is apparently pursuing life as a restaurant entrepreneur.

Jughead is one of my favorite characters on the show. The chemistry between Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart(Betty) is to me the best on the screen and sometimes carries an episode. As the show moves forward and they continue not only to develop his character but the others as well I hope the chemistry between he and the other actors will improve.

I love fangirls, lol. So apparently, in an interview about his photography (in case anyone doesn't know, Cole is fully into photography and has a separate Instagram just for his work and he just got done shooting Kendall Jenner for some British magazine), Cole basically said that it's really his passion and he doesn't have the same love for acting that he does photography.

And then he said that if his photography becomes more pressing in terms of him getting to do things like a professional magazine shoot and stuff, he'd be fine to leave acting and devote all his time to it. This of course has sent the fangirls into a tizzy on social media because they will just "die" (their words) if Cole leaves Riverdale and he can't because there is no show without Jughead and just a slew of hyperbole and mass hysteria. It's hilarious.

Im watching this for the first time on Netflix and its curious that Jughead wears and "S" and his father is in the South Side Serpants. I know Jughead wears the letter in the comics but it is curious.

A forshadowing to whats to come for Jughead? Or just another comic call-back...I have finished the series, so it'll be interesting what Season Two will hold.

It's kind of funny that he's getting to be a teen idol twice. (Although really, he was more of a tween idol.)

I feel like the Powers That Be expected him to be pretty popular going into the show given that 'he was the biggest name of the kids, but probably not THIS popular.

That's What I'm worried about as well. The guy's pretty popular with the younger audience (ok ok,  mostly female audience) and there's bound to be a backlash... The guy has a lot of star power and with the storyline he's been getting... its no wonder people are falling for him and the character... lol... ?

I'm just worried with all this unexpected popularity that either true Archie or bArchie fans will stop watching the show or that the actor will just quit bc of the sudden extra attention...  or even worse, they'll make jughead even more ooc than he already is or give him even shittier storylines... eugh.

As for the fans well, if they're pissed off about bughead then they must be really pissed off at all the other changes the show has done so far ...

Isn't he too old already to be a teen idol? I'm probably out of the loop  now either way lol...

I don't think it's that big of a deal yet. I'd say the biggest concern might be his leaving because Cole has already shown that acting isn't really a huge priority to him, much like his brother. They enjoy it but I wonder if the fact that they were thrust into it literally as babies, just kind of made them a little weary of it. That said, he may rediscover his love for it again, having been away for years before taking the role of Jughead.

As for the Archie and Betty/Archie shippers, every popular teen show deals with shippers who are disappointed because the writers can't please everyone. They eventually get over it. For every Archie and Betty/Archie fan pissed at the popularity of Betty/Jughead and Jughead himself, there are others who love Jughead and the pairing with Betty. So it evens out.

Cole is only 24, so no, not that old. Also, I may be wrong but I don't think being a teen idol means the actor themselves have to be a teen and more that they develop a huge teen girl fanbase. Johnny Depp was a teen idol when he did 21 Jump Street and he was already in his late 20's at that point, same with when Leonardo Dicaprio became a massive teen idol after Titanic and I think he was 23/24 at the time.

I just binged the first season.  Despite my deep unhappiness with the politically-correct characters (Josie had to CLAW her way into the local music scene because she's black.  REALLY?), I have to report I really freakin' enjoyed this show.

The best line of the whole season belonged to Juggy when he said it was weird that he was wore that stupid hat all the time. lol

BTW, what do you call that hat?  My whole life I've been wondering about it because he and Goober Pyle on Andy Griffith always wore it.  I just can't figure it out. Can someone help me out?

Jughead realizing that he's being treated like a member of the Serpents whether he wants to or not was a neat moment.

I'm guessing they don't want to cast Jughead's foster parents yet, which is why he's staying in the trailer yet maintaining the ruse that he's in Southdale?

That moment with the other serpents was a disheartening a bit, he won't be able to get away that easily....

And the "agreement" with his foster parents, perfect way to introduce the Spellmans once they cast.the parts...

Exactly!  In the past a lot of teen idols had to hide the fact that they were older than their characters and the fact that they were dating or even married.  With the internet and social media the teen idol craze is more tempered.

I was fooling around on the computer and just found out that Jughead is played by Cole Sprouse.  He looks so different.  My son is in college now but we would all watch The Suite Life, any Disney show, all the time.  I am just glad that Cole was the smarter, more sensitive, of the brothers.

I am so agreeing you with this! Of all of the beefs I have against this show THIS is probably the biggest one!

He's just trying to get through his miserable life and he's surviving  as good as he can but still they manage to send all types of shit just to make him suffer some more... I mean come on, kick him while he's lying down already...

Nah, it just pisses me off. Yeah, it might make good storylines, good drama, good tv, but it is exhausting...  It might also be because I can somewhat-vaguely relate to the character that I just get uber pissed when he just gets kicked around again...

That's also why i'm so pro-bughead, Betty is one of the few good things in his life, imperfect in their own ways but managing to get the essence of eachother.... Eugh, damn you stupid teen show....

Can't believe i'm getting upset writing this lol (eye roll)

I feel you. I hate how invested I am I. This but it just really feels like this season the show hates this character. And possibly the Bughead pairing. For some reason I have this odd thinking that they didn’t think Bughead would get so popular and I don’t think they wanted Cole/Jughead to be more of a leading character than Kj/ Archie  but it’s what happened.

I don’t know. I’m so over the show right now. I’m skipping next week which makes me sad but I thought the Christmas episode would be fun but then they ruined Bughead again and decided to make FP drink again and say really awful things to Jughead. Like what he said last night was awful.

Awww, sounds like you finally made your decision!!! Its a bit of a shame since you've been such a fan and have made great comments... Don't give up just yet! Just stop watching it now and watch it in one go once the season's done, maybe the show will redeem itself, who knows...

Yeah, I'm way over-invested in tthis god awful teeny drama show.... Haven't been tis invested in ships since Veornica/Logan in Veronica Mars or even Felicity  (team Ben all the way) for that matter but bahhh.... I WISH I could just stop watching it and see it in one go during the summer but I couldn't even if I wanted to, well, maybe if they go Barchie (and its just fluff) and Jug goes super-evil-Serpent I might lose interest but i'm not giving up yet...

As adorable and as talented as Cole is (if you ignore the overacting), they totally should have casted someone else for the role of Jughead, someone less known like the rest of the kids. He's leading the show, he is the most popular (I gather?), Kj/ARchie don't have nothing on him and its a bit of a shame since it is a show about Archie... I think he's quite redundant really... but hey, just my op.
