"The Daily Show": Week of 7/27/15

That woman was hilarious though. They always have a problem with bathrooms!

There are open-minded people everywhere.

I don't understand people like that pastor. What a waste of energy to go through life being so afraid of people who are different from you. Live and let live, dude. No one's going to force you to go gay.

But clearly the guy was a huge raging asshole and idiot, because nobody is discriminating against him by making life easier for other people.

This. Not having everything be exactly the way you want it does not equal discrimination. I thought Jordan did a great job with that piece. He's one of my all-time favorite field correspondents.

Loved Doris Kearns Goodwin's unfiltered remarks about Citizens United.  I'm a huge LBJ fan so I already heard the Pants Tape, and I love that his enthusiasm for the White House taping system ultimately led to Nixon's downfall.

I appreciate Stewart's honesty about how his meetings with Obama were likely meant to influence Stewart's coverage, but were hardly the secretive and sinister dalliances the media is making them out to be.

I sincerely hope people like this continue to be mocked, because the real danger here is states passing "religious exemption" laws for that exact reason - allowing people like this to continue legally discriminating against gays. It's nice that this little town passed this non-discrimination law but watch Arkansas turn around and pass a broader law permitted religious exemptions from this ordinance.

It just galls me that certain religious types think they're being "discriminated against" because they can no longer discriminate against others!

That woman Jordan was interviewing would make a decent correspondent. Her reaction to the utter stupidity Jordan was spewing was perfection. ("Ice cream isn't...gender neutral?") As for that pastor, he can go sit on a sharp dick.

As insane as the "Jon Stewart Secret Meetings with Obama!!" thing is, I kind of like the fact that Obama wanted to talk to him about his cynicism. If I summoned him I'd want to talk about that too. Of course, those conversations might be part of the reason he decided to quit. I love the fact that he laid out his secret meeting with Roger Ailes and mentioned that Ailes said he would deny it if asked about it.

This show made me realize how much I miss hearing Stephen say "Apologies to Doris Kearns Goodwin."

What a delightful show last night, the first one this week which seemed worthy of second to last week status.

FartyPants, I don't know whether you need to travel to get to NYC, but I would recommend checking ticket availability on the website frequently, and particularly on the morning of each of next week's shows, if you can plan an attendance on short notice. I live in NY but have been out of town. I came in last weekend for a few days. I was desperate to go to a last taping, and there were actually tickets available Monday morning for that night's taping. Due to conflicts I was unable to grab them- such frustration. So, keep a close eye and good luck!

When Letterman and Colbert retired, there was a ton of stuff in the press around the time of their departures. Other than a few Huffington Post pieces, I have seen virtually nothing about Jon. Was it all done at the time he announced his retirement? There was a huge amount then. I am hoping for some more to soften the blow.

I'm not Stephen, but I said it at least three times during the show! And I bet I'm not alone in that.

"Ice cream isn't...gender neutral?"

No kidding, I flat out loved her.

Great show. I loved Jon's clear explanation of what his "secret" meetings with Obama were about. His saying, "Something is not a secret just because YOU don't know about it," is perfect. Roger Ailes as Death was perfect.

Jordan's segment was enjoyable too. When Jordan first started with the show, I wasn't all that taken with him, but he's done some pretty good stuff lately. And the woman in the segment was great. Who was she, btw? A legislator? In any case, she was smart and well-spoken. "For some reason conservative religious people are terribly hung up on bathrooms."

Doris Kearns Goodwin for the win!

I thought it was kind of adorable that Doris Kearns Goodwin was briefly afraid that Jon would "Roll-212" her to prove her statement wrong. She's always been a fascinating guest, and I wish it was an extended interview .

I mean ... the two examples Jon gave of his conversations with Obama were the VA and healthcare website, of which he was very critical. I don't like it when my boss summons me without warning and can't imagine what it would be like to criticize POTUS and then get that call. Yikes.

That was an entirely delightful episode and Jon seemed to have so much fun with the first "secret meetings with the president" segment, which really made me so happy to see.  I also loved the entire "they were logged, so they were secret in the sense that..." apparently no one at Fox News actually know what the word "secret" means.

I am somehow not in anyway surprised by this, but I got a good giggle out of such an open confirmation of it.

That woman was like balm for my soul.   Then Doris Kearns Goodwin's open affection for Jon just made it a feel good show all around.

In other news, including needing to pry the doors open of his close-mind, that pastor sincerely needs to rethink his hair product.

Is it weird that Jon keeps calling it "our last week" instead of "my last week?" The show isn't going anywhere.

I'm going to guess that it's because some staff  might be leaving as well? I know many aren't, but I'm sure some are besides Jon. But yeah, WE'RE STILL HERE!

Ah 2012: the year everyone thought the year was going to end, a time where some focus audiences were attached to the Twilight series, and the worst year of high school by academic standards. Ah, I was so foolish back then. But at the same time, it was the year I'd decided to become a frequent watcher of TDS as the Presidential election reached its peak starting with the party conventions. It was great Jonny-bun was taking down the RNC's potential platform of sticking to racier extremes against Trump's ego. As for the first Republican debate, I pity the other selected 9 who'll have to deal with Trump.

And Seth Rollins....yeah I didn't see that coming. Not him presenting the tributes, just him. At least he didn't strangle Jonny-bun. :)

Yeah, Jordan is fantastic.  As are Jessica and Hasan.

I was surprised to see Seth Rollins pop up, and I was just as shocked as him when Jon showed the sandals.  Although, Jon, he didn't break Cena's nose, he completely smurfed it up.  Seriously part of Cena's nose was under his eye.

I liked that Jon pointed out that the show is actually continuing without him after next week. JJA was going on like there wasn't going to be a show anymore. That's a little unfair to everyone else on the show.

I kind of love that Trump's popularity in the polls is evidence of what Republicans truly believe. I listened to my BIL and a friend of us say how Trump was misquoted re the Mexican rapists comment, but basically agreeing with Trump's opinion that Mexicans are the scum of the earth.

I very much enjoyed JJ Abrams. I did feel kind of bad for Trevor Noah, but I also agree that Jon's shoes will be hard to fill. I've often had problems with him, but he really is quite genius in his performance and in the direction he's taken the show.

Yes, she had that "I used to be disgusted but now I'm just amused." demeanor common to many civil servants who have spent years smiling and nodding at the lunatic fringe that lurks in every community.

Rachel Maddow showed a stunning poll of R voters which showed they overwhelmingly support 'candidates that agree with me' rather than 'candidates who can win.' And that (these days) means Trump. Which, if this holds (and I will take that bet!), we can look forward to Obama's third term.

"Jorn Smegma" is not the nicest name. Why no Stewbeef?!?  On the other hand, I giggled through all those Arby's tags.

That must drive the RNC absolutely nuts.

I wonder how similar it is for Dems, though given that the field is so small, there might not be a comparison.

Really. It's not like the gop establishment doesn't know that getting the non white vote is the key to winning nationally. How about cultivating leaders that won't just pander? Or realize that they "lost" on the ACA and marriage equality and move on. They haven't really captured an issue. Everything is "we don't like this we don't like that." Now it's defund Planned Parenthood.

And the "take something something back" meme. Non white voters don't want to hear that. Gay people don't. Super religious people do but they are a dwindling demo.

The Lindsay Graham mockage struck me as a bit unfair this time. Not that he's not mockable in general, but the clip they showed was of him saying something I think is quite reasonable: that he doesn't want to get media attention for his reaction to Trump, but for his own actual ideas for the job.

Nate Silver did an analysis of Trump's poll numbers that I found a little comforting (for those who are worried he'll win). It makes the case that while Trump does have followers, he has as many detractors, so his chances of actually winning are far lower than the numbers suggest. 20% may be high, but the remaining 80% will coalesce around someone else, not migrate to Trump, basically. This is one of the times it's actually a relief we have a winner-takes-all primary, and not a system with proportionate representation for losers.

I was expecting a different take on that. I thought it was going to be clips of Jon shilling products like baconnaise and the pancake wrapped sausages on a stick. Regardless of what one thinks of Arby's food, I give them big ups for how well they've handled Jon's barbs.

I'm ten seconds from starting an online petition demanding that JJ give Jon a cameo in Star Wars.

Yeah, the mockage didn't really seem warranted in this case, but I just adore Jon's Graham impression, so I decided to look the other way. :p

I don't doubt that Trump will lose. I've never thought he would even get the R nomination. Last time wasn't Herman Cain riding pretty high at the beginning?

I'm not watching the R debate live, but I'm curious how Trump will handle himself. As bombastic as usual?

Count me in also as one of those who were surprised to see Seth Rollins appear last night. I wold have hoped it was Ollie or Stephen. And why no shilling of baconnnaise and pancakes wrapped sausage on a stick? I know Arby's has a special place in Jon's heart (or is it his colon?), but come on now!

The Republicans have no one to blame for their predicament but themselves. When you pander to only one group of people for a long time, disregard everyone else, and double down on your bullshit, don't act surprised when the chickens come home to roost.

Too much fucking Mission Impossible for this the last few times we see Jon. That was pure bullshit.

I had never heard of JJ Abrams before and was bummed out by having the guest slot be taken up by what I expected would be another commercial for Mission Impossible. I ended up liking it very much. He seemed like a very nice guy and Jon enjoyed himself, unlike his meeting with Tom Cruise, during which he never stopped talking, presumably to limit the amount of words we all had to listen to from Cruise. I especially appreciated Abrams' comment about the "seismic hole" Jon will leave once he goes, and his appreciation for "the narrative you gave us to navigate the madness that is this world."

Yeah- Jon's Gone with the Wind impression of Graham was probably a cheap shot, but it is my favorite impression,

I loved the ice-cream has no gender woman as well.  She completely rocked.  There are very competent and professional government workers.  You rarely see them on tv, as it goes against script.

I did like the time they spent on Arbys.  The last bit they did on Arbys about a month ago had Jon holding up a boombox over his head declaring that Arbys was his OG.  So out of respect for his true love Jon needed to pay a proper tribute.

Great stories from Abrams re  Harrison Ford.  Ford and Abrams go way back as Abrams wrote the script for the early 90's Ford flick "Regarding Henry."  I remember a cover story that featured both Ford and Abrams from that time and they were jumping on a bed together.

I had no fear that the talk re Mission Impossible would be minimal with Abrams given how big a fan Jon Stu is of Star Wars.

Of course Trump will. He knows all the others will can't out-troll him, so they're going to try to gang up on him and make him look foolish. He's going to double down on the cray because he knows they can't come up the same bloviating rhetoric that he will. There's *10* people at a debate. There won't be a shred of substantive policy discussion. It's all going to be how they'll shoot the ACA dead between the eyes, and who do the gays think they are wanting *rights*?!, and foreigners? they're snorting drugs, sexing your daughters and taking your jobs.

Oh, and Iran has a nuclear weapon last week.

Am I the only Red Dwarf fan who laughed and laughed at Smegma (the origins of smeg are definitely the 1970's Battlestar Galatica's Frak which they kept for the reboot)? I may be assuming way too many cultural references for fake swear words that may just have been picked to be gross.

Considering the list of Jon's final guests, I might have to pretend that his Doris Kerns Goodwin show was his last.  I can live with that.  His explanation for the White House trips was awesome, Jordan's piece could not have been better (especially the end shot under the huge statue), and Doris was delightful as always.  I just don't care for Denis or Louis CK, and I think Jon is at his worst when he is interviewing his celebrity friends.  I love hearing him talk with intelligent people whose books he has read.  His passion shows up then.  With his friends, he just seems to be making inside jokes that aren't interesting to me.  I'll DVR the last day, but Doris might be my swan song.  Goodbye, Jon.  I will miss you!

There are a bunch of political common wisdom bits that seem to be reversing. It used to be that the Democrats' core voters were frustrated with their candidates trying hard not to be too controversial and pandering to "moderates" who didn't want minorities becoming too equal or for convicts to have a chance to have a non-criminal life once they get out (aka "soft on crime").

Looks fondly back on Ally McBeal for at least introducing the concept of gender-neutral bathrooms.  That would really solve so many problems (like women usually having to wait in a significantly long line at almost any large public venue).

Not sure why Fox News would worry about Stewart visiting Obama, since they belive Obama's a socialist, which Stewart is not.

Stewart could look younger than 53 too, if he dyed his hair.
