archer1267 July 21, 2015 Share July 21, 2015 I didn't see a topic for this and thought I'd start one. Selenis Levya (Mendoza) is one of my favorites, and I loved seeing her pop up briefly in an episode of Girls (1st season, episode 4). She plays one of Hannah's co-workers, and decides to give Hannah a makeover in the ladies' room. This involves doing something to Hannah's eyebrows which makes her boyfriend say "what happened to your eyebrows? You look like a Mexican teenager." I know that Levya and lots of other OITNB actresses have been on Law & Order. Of course, Red was Captain Janeway…. 1 Link to comment
lovemytvshows July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 Full disclaimer: YMMV but IMO Laura Prepon is probably the obvious one with her former stint on That 70s Show (and I've mentioned previously that I found to be unfunny and slightly cringeworthy). I also caught a couple of episodes of October Road, a short-lived drama that she was on and I gotta say, her acting on OITNB is leaps and bounds over her acting on those two former shows. I've found that she's shown a lot more range of emotions on OITNB compared to the other two. I hear a lot of people saying she's a bad actress but if you compare her acting between OITNB and the others, it's a definite improvement. The way I saw it, you could pin quite a lot of the lesser performances on the writing and material that she was given on those shows, as compared to this one. Once again, your mileage might vary. DianeDobbler July 23, 2015 Share July 23, 2015 Prepon has definitely improved. When you look at Alex's eyes, she's there. She's not like these opaque or blank types. Same with her facial expressions - they're organic. Natasha Lyonne and Judy Greer are receiving good reviews for their movie "Addicted to Fresno." In this one Lyonne plays the stable sister and Greer is the mess. It appears/I am hoping this was why Lyonne wasn't around most of Season 3. 1 Link to comment

ElectricBoogaloo June 15, 2016 Share June 15, 2016 Danielle Brooks (Taystee) has been starring in the Broadway musical The Color Purple as Sofia (originally played by Oprah Winfrey in the movie version). She was nominated for a Tony Award in the Best Featured Actress in a Musical category. She lost to Renee Elise Goldsberry because Hamilton was unstoppable (the show had a record 16 nominations in 13 categories and ultimately won 11). Diane Guerrero (Maritza) has been playing Lina, the best friend of Jane the Virgin. She isn't in every episode but she's a supportive friend so it's nice when she's around. 2 Link to comment
kickedinthehead June 18, 2016 Share June 18, 2016 (edited) None of these are new, but in recent months, I've noticed a few cast members turn up in movies I've watched: Michelle Hurst (Miss Claudette) has a small role in that masterpiece "Airheads"; Dascha Polanco (Daya) appears in the 2013 film "Gimme Shelter" (playing -- wait for it -- a pregnant girl); and Kimiko Glenn (Soso) turns up in another obscure 2013 movie, "HairBrained" (as a character with the very important name of "Perky Girl", who acts very much like Season 2 Brook Soso). I've also seen Natasha Lyonne in several movies: she plays the typical "supportive friend" role in "Kate & Leopold" (kind of an odd role for her, though); she's also in the not-very-good films "4:44: Last Day on Earth" and "Girl Most Likely." And I haven't seen it in a long time, but my favorite movie with her in it is "Slums of Beverly Hills" (I'd love to see her co-star from that film, Kevin Corrigan, appear on OITNB!). Of course, Blair Brown has also been in a bunch of stuff -- for some reason, of her roles that I've seen, the first one coming to mind is some Lifetime-ish TV movie from the 90's called "Convictions." She went to prison in that movie, too, but as a visitor -- who bonded with her son's killer (Cameron Bancroft). I barely remember the movie, but I liked (and still like) both lead actors, and enjoyed seeing them together. ETA: Oh, yeah -- Maria Dizzia (Polly) has a one-scene role in "The Other Woman" (the Natalie Portman one, not the other movie with the same title). I remember watching it several months ago and feeling annoyed trying to figure out who she was, until I finally placed her. Oh, and Fischer is in the (very odd) video for the They Might Be Giants song "You're on Fire." Edited June 18, 2016 by kickedinthehead Link to comment
Arienne June 19, 2016 Share June 19, 2016 I haven't seen anyone mention it but I just have to........... The new red head female CO is Emily from the Haverty's Furniture commercials. Don't know her CO name but it drove me crazy until I figured it out! Link to comment
Princess Sparkle June 21, 2016 Share June 21, 2016 This isn't all that recent either BUT - Adrienne C Moore was in an episode of Law and Order: SVU this season and was fantastic. It was, legitmately, one of the best episodes I've seen in years and that was in no small part due to her performance. She made me burst into tears quite a few times, and that's something that I haven't experienced watching that show in quite some time. It was a complete 180 from Black Cindy, but my goodness, she was great. Link to comment
TV Diva Queen June 29, 2016 Share June 29, 2016 I was looking at some red carpet pics of the cast and JUST realized that pornstache is the guy who kidnapped Detective Olivia Benson. OMG how did I miss that. He acted the shit out of that SVU character, when I see him a rerun on the mothership (he was a fireman), I hate him all over again. I can't believe I didn't catch this. Princess Sparkle June 29, 2016 Share June 29, 2016 I feel like at least half the cast has been on SVU now that I think about it - Pablo Schreiber is probably the most memorable, but off the top of my head (SVU is my comfort show; I've seen every ep at least 3 times), I remember seeing Gloria, Aleida, Piper's brother, Leanne, Pennsutucky (Taryn Manning was GREAT in her episode), Nicky, and Miss Claudette. 1 Link to comment
Sdh June 29, 2016 Share June 29, 2016 I JUST saw Elizabeth Rodriquez (Aleida) doing a guest appearance on my guilty pleasure (or kind of pleasure) show, Devious Maids. What a contrast in show types! She also played someone that was pretty bitchy, though :) Link to comment
kieyra July 11, 2017 Share July 11, 2017 Netflix has a small series called Deep Water up, starring Yael Stone (Lorna) who gets to use her normal accent (it's set in Sydney, Australia). It looks like it aired in fall of last year. If you like the Nordic Noir style of crime show (steely thirty-something female detective with a sensible ponytail and a kid she's raising alone, plus a Dark Past), this will probably work for you. Not sure if it will be more than one season, but interestingly it's based on some real crimes: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Water_(TV_series) 2 Link to comment
tennisgurl July 11, 2017 Share July 11, 2017 So I was watching the new Spider-Man movie, and who should show up out of nowhere? Gloria, as one of Peter Parks teachers! I didn't recognize her at first, but I knew her voice was familiar, and then I was like "holy crap, Gloria"! It was really weird to see her out of prison clothes. I think Gloria probably did miss her calling as a tough but fair New York City high school teacher. Link to comment

It's strange to see Lorna without make-up and prison clothes. And acting rationally. :) 1 Link to comment

I keep waiting for a forum to magically appear here so I can talk about (episode five spoiler) Spoiler how poorly Annie and, uh, Quigley? handled the active-shooter situation ... but I'm too lazy to go and request a forum be created. :) (My only problem with Deep Water is that between endless rewatches of Happy Valley (LOVE IT SO MUCH), Broadchurch and now The Loch, my American ear is attuned to Northern England (? I think, in the case of Happy Valley) and Scottish accents and speech patterns, which feel a little similar to each other, and it's struggling to recalibrate to Aussie inflections.) It's times like this I really miss the message boards at the IMDb. I agree about what happened in episode 5. I was yelling at the TV. 1 hour ago, kieyra said: My only problem with Deep Water is that between endless rewatches of Happy Valley (LOVE IT SO MUCH), Broadchurch and now The Loch, my American ear is attuned to Northern England. I loved Broadchurch but I didn't care for Happy Valley. I checked it out because of James Norton (who was great on Grantchester) but I stopped watching Happy Valley after the first episode. I should have given it a couple more episodes. Everyone always raves about the show so I've been thinking for awhile now that I should give it another chance. As for the accents, I always watch these shows with CC. Even after years of watching shows from the UK, I still find myself having trouble understanding some of the words and phrases they use. 1 Link to comment
