This Ryan storyline is not fun for me to watch.  Something about the whole thing has rubbed me the wrong way since he started seeing patients as Kevin, and though I like the vets on screen....  I can't actually watch it.

I don't care if Lucky never comes back--even if played by JJ.

I don't see the need for the character when he will just end up losing to Jason, Franco, and Sonny.

Same thing with Jax?  What exactly is Jax doing here?  Going to be brought on to be with Nunina?  He certainly won't harm Carson too much.

I like Oscar, I DO care that he's dying in an unnecessary way that is just more angst heaped on my favorite family, the Quartermaines, who I do feel he's a part of. No, I don't think it's trying to be Stone and Robin, because the relationships and the characters so so completely different.  It's way closer to what Dillon and Georgie were during the monkey virus arc.  That couple, btw, I infinitely prefer to Stone and Robin anyway.  GQ 4 life!!

I DON'T care about the Ryan story, was tired of watching it a while ago.  I'm glad it exists and that other people enjoy and watch it because it involves an under served group of characters and actors, but I skip it.

I haven't watched this show in ages, but I do lurk sometimes and I see the outrage online about Oscar and the whole Edward/Lila thing.

So, I have a few most likely unpopular opinions. First off, Robin and Stone weren't all that. Robin has always had the personality of sawdust, and Kim Mc has never, ever impressed me as an actress. Stone would have been far more interesting paired with someone else.

People are mocking any comparisons of Robin/Stone and Joss/Oscar. Saying that Oscar is a newbie, but...he was a character for almost two  years...which was about the same amount of time Stone was. Maybe the writing was better back then, but that's the only real significant difference. Oscar may not be as well liked as Stone, and  Drew being Jason's twin is a rewrite, but rewrites/long lost children happen all the time on soaps. Like it or not, Drew is Alan's son, and Oscar is Drew's son, which makes Oscar a member of a legacy family. Something that Stone never was, BTW. In fact, the only blood tie I remember Stone having, was Jagger-a character who wasn't on the canvas for most of Stone's run.  And his sister Gina, who was on for two seconds.

I don't really think the problem is Oscar is a newbie-because time wise, he's really not one anymore. It's also not that he didn't have ties. It's just that if the writing is as bad or worse than it was when I watched last a couple of years ago-the writing is so disjointed. Characters are kept in bubbles until they are needed for things like this. Relationships are not developed. I cried like a baby when Stone died, but it was because relationships were established between Stone and other characters that I loved. I cared about THOSE people-so I cared about Stone. I wept for Kevin and Lucy, for Ned and Lois, and yes, even for Sonny. So if the show didn't take the time to build that between Oscar and other people-that's the fault of the writers-not the fault of the character or the actor.

And now that I've watched, I think the kid did fine and the shows leading up to his death were fine. There are some sad, bitter people on the internet who mock a child dying. Some people just live to complain and aren't happy with anything.

But the people mocking him were glad with something. That was the point.

Also, he's fictional. Would you be sad if they killed off Sonny and Carly's baby?

Yes, I'd be sad over it. It's the death of a baby. Fictional or not. The fact that his or  her parents are sociopaths is not the child's fault. It's a tragedy, of course it's sad.

Yeah, but it would eventually become a SORASed character taking away screentime from others.

I don't think anyone here is frothing themselves into an ecstasy that Oscar died of a brain tumor . . . but I think the show is better off with out him. I would rather they had sent him off to boarding school but FV didn't call me and ask me.

I was just annoyed that it took them so long to kill him off. 😇  And I hope we don't have to hear about him for much longer.  And I actually like Drew and I like Kim, but the Death of Oscar was just not a thing that was appealing to watch and not because it made me sad.

For real.  Also, it was a dumb storyline to begin with, what with Kim hiding it from Oscar for years (?) and him having zero symptoms until the last couple months.

Or that Kim apparently had him see a bunch of doctors and specialists over the years and Oscar never suspected that something was wrong with him or ask what was wrong with him.

I'll just say I disagree with this part and leave at it that. I don't want to say the wrong thing and make you mad at me/confuse you. 😉

(Of course, I realize you may just specifically mean scripted shows, not game shows/talk shows/news shows like The Price is Right or Meet the Press, which actually HAVE lasted this long or longer. And I think a scripted show CAN last this long and be perfectly fine--I mean, there are British soaps that have lasted this long and they seem yo be doing okay. I don't think it HAS to be a waste. That's part of makes daytime soaps so special to me! But again, I think I have the UO now, and I don't want to cause any more trouble than I already have, so I'll stop here. 🙂 )

...Okay, I didn't wind up leaving it at that. My apologies. But I do realize I'm probably alone on this so NOW I'll stop, for real this time.

I believe the hype is that Kim Mc was trusted with/expected to perform material that was difficult at a young age, and is admired that at a young age she stood up for herself when TPTB at GH pressured her to do stuff she was not comfortable doing, e.g. kiss a much older boy when she was middle school age. As an adult, she stands up for the young actors/entertainers (via her blog) by sharing her memories. When she resisted doing what they wanted, TPTB at GH threw Genie's work experience and age in her face to say being sexy when you're young is no big deal. After that, she was in danger of losing her job because the show wanted an older-looking/sexier Robin.

It's up for debate how talented or not Kim Mc is as an actress, but I definitely think she and JJ (Lucky) were much better actors as children/tweens than most of the kid actors on the show in the last five-10 years or so. The only non-teen minor actor I think is great right now is the boy who plays Jake.

@UYI I think we can handle whatever controversial opinions you've got. ; )

I'll say this right off the bat: I am probably one of the very last people who should weigh in on whether or not GH should finally be cancelled. Truth be told, I didn't watch the show regularly for anywhere NEAR as many years as many of you have (although I do frequently hop around YouTube and watch various eras/stories of the show depending on my mood), and it's been quite awhile since I even watched the current show on a less than semi-regular basis, and yes, I will admit, on the rare occasion that I DO hear of something that is currently a story on the show, I really don't feel much desire to watch again. However, I probably do have the UO of not thinking the show should be cancelled without at least some effort to save it through major changes behind the scenes/among the cast if needed--and yes, if the embarrassment of being the first network to get rid of all of its soaps is worth it for ABC (NBC doing it was considered its destiny for decades; ABC, the network that had arguably the biggest place in larger pop culture in terms of their soaps' popularity? The jokes would write themselves.). Of course, the urgency to do this/whether it should have been done long ago is probably very subjective.

And I definitely don't think a TV show should absolutely be cancelled after a certain time period, soaps or otherwise. Look at Law & Order: SVU--this year is its 20th anniversary. How cool is that? And as TV history/trivia nerd (I know, lame, lol), I LOVE seeing how long shows have lasted and indulging in all its history and milestones. Seeing those evolutions is just so cool to me. And it DOES make me wonder about the daytime soaps that were cancelled even several decades before, and what could have been done to save them.

But I think I've gone past UO territory and into general TV nerd observations at this point. I just wanted to expand on and clarify a few things I spoke about before. I just hope I made SOME amount of sense. 🙂

I did leave out that I always preferred the Mothership. Still think SVU's longevity is cool, but I have always been a bit baffled at just. how. BIG. it became, to the point that the original show got eclipsed in terms of popularity.

So yeah, I feel you there.

I just felt bad that I confused you the other day about my Robert and Anna post, and I know you and most of the other posters are a LOT more snarky and cynical here than I am (especially when it comes to whether or not the show should be cancelled), and I worry that my optimism can be very annoying and that I would be better liked if I became more pissed off more often. At the very least it would be more amusing for you guys to see me like that. lol In any case, I always try to be nice and respectful to everyone and be a person you guys would like to know in real life. I hope I come across that way. 🙂

Also, I was curious if by saying that TV shows shouldn't last 56 years the way GH has, if you meant daytime soaps, or just any TV show in general, scripted or otherwise. Because I definitely don't think that has to be true, even for soaps. But of course, mileage varies.

Anyway:

I'm genuinely baffled that so few Jax & Skye fans seem to exist. I've always liked them and wish they could be revisited for real at some point (by contrast, I've never been as interested in Jax & Alexis as most people seem to be...I mean, I wouldn't be OPPOSED to them, per se, I'm just not as upset that they never became a real couple...there, I said it! 😛 )

Are we really that snarky and cynical? There are a few people who are pretty harsh but most people here usually talk about SOME thing they like, one or another.

As for the British soaps, they write characters off when the story calls for it. If GH did that I might be less inclined to thinking GH should be cancelled.

It sucks, but the public at large does not care which network is the first to have no soaps. Having a soap is more embarrassing than not. When I mentioned GH to offliners the most frequent response i get is "that wasn't off the air ages ago?"

I assume this means you saw the Lucy/Laura and Curtis, and Lucy/Lulu/Laura scenes today.  Yes, Lucy is definitely into the Carly-esque OTT inappropriate entitlement behavior realm.  To me, the difference is Lucy only (not that it makes it okay) behaves this way about Kevin and maybe Scott in the past. Carly has been acting this way for decades toward the wives/love interests, baby mamas and previous lovers of Tony, Jason, Sonny, and Jax.

It depends on the topic, I guess. There are definitely some where I tread more carefully, heh. But yes, I do see plenty of times where you guys are squeeing over something you like, too. 🙂

Here's a UO:

Despite everything that happened between them, I still largely prefer Frisco & Felicia to Mac & Felicia. I will never deny the stability that Mac brought to Felicia's life, but there's something about F&F that still tugs at me. (I bet this opinion is more popular outside of this forum--in fact, given how strong the community of 80's GH YouTube posters/uploaders is, I feel pretty confident in saying that.)

And see for me when I say "hype", I mean that as a GH viewer I always felt pressured to like Robin or any of the Scorpios. And I was never really given a reason I could believe in. I don't find any of them particularly interesting-though Robert and Mac both were semi cool for maybe the first year or two ? IDK.  That's what I mean by hype. Like I was supposed to like Lucky just because he was Luke and Laura's son, as another example.

I don't work that way. Every character is stand alone for me, and has to prove their worth individually. I mean, I love the Qs as a family unit, but you better believe there are some as individual characters, that I just don't care about. And some (Jason and his spawn) that I don't consider Qs at all, blood or not.

I think it's also because the very word "hype" automatically triggers a gag reflex in me. I will go anti hype as I can, unless I am honestly genuinely interested in a character or a story all on it's own merits. And that's any form of story telling or media, not just GH. Hyping something up will make me avoid it like the plague and may make me hate it before I even watch it or read it. It just does, IDK why. Probably because rarely do things and people live up to the hype, I guess.

I am not an acting expert. For those who like KMc and think she's great, that's your right. But I do judge by the little things. If I've taped a show, do I pause and rewind a scene multiple times because the actor's moments in the scene are just that good ? I've never done that with KMc, ever, unless I had to rewind to hear something Robin said because of the already stated mumbling. I've done it with Jane Elliot, with Christian Bale, with Zachary Levi, with Tom Hiddleston, with Anne Hathaway, with Judy Garland, with Claudette Colbert, with Vincent D'onofrio, with Clark Gable, with many actors over the years. It's not even necessarily about talent-it's about the ability to wring some kind of emotion out of that scene-and it's about making me believe there's more going on there that what is written on the page. THAT for me is acting.

I don't get that with KMc. But in fairness, I can count on both hands the number of GH actors I've ever gotten that from. I've even gotten it from Genie Francis, and I don't particularly like Laura, so it's also not about being a fan of the character. I've gotten it from Maurice Benard and I can't really stand Sonny.

Eden McCoy. She's a current young actress, and her scenes during Oscar's last week, I did rewind. She runs rings around anything I've ever seen KMc do. And that's not going back to a Robin/Stone thing and the comparisons of the story. It just means I think Eden is a much stronger, natural  actress than Kim is.

Personal take. *shrug*

Not only do I not particularly like Lucy, I hated how she was shoe horned in to the Qs storylines to the point of marrying Alan.  Even Alan, who had a fling with Susan Moore, should have had better taste than that. Then again, Lucy/Susan Moore are sort of peas in  a pod, or at least, on the same row of the vegetable garden.

But that red wedding dress was HEE larious. One of the funniest moments on this show, ever. And wasn't it Tracy's fault ? SCORE. Tracy just didn't expect Lucy to wear it(and I admired her for having the guts to do it).

I've been all over the map with Lucy. Take into account I have no record of her earlier years when probably all of the good stuff was going on. I did see her scenes for BJ's death. But in the more recent maybe past decade or so, I've gone from liking her, to feeling sorry for her, from loving her, to being annoyed by her, to being pissed off at her. She will never out hate Carly for me, but I really can't stand her slut shaming. It's so gross.

I don't think so. Lucy meant to wear a white dress, but was delivered a red dress by mistake. Tracy certainly didn't mind snarking on it during the ceremony, though. The best part of the wedding is her sarcastic remarks ("I hope she chokes on it"--I think that was about the wedding ring--and it may very well have been a nod to Victor Jerome, who choked to death on a locket he had made for her the year before, where he declared his love for Lucy--Alan helped her cover up his death.).

The best part for me is how Lucy kept hitting Alan in the head with her big hat--SD was clearly trying not to laugh.

And all the talk about the Q's leads me to an eternal UO: I love Billy Warlock's AJ just as much as Sean Kanan's.

Yeah, hurting someone who did nothing to deserve it takes all the love out of me for these "meant to be" couples.

As an example.... OK, this vaguely goes against my Carly hate, but I didn't totally hate her with Franco at first.  And, though I do like Franco more than most, I admit he did some heinous shit.  HOWEVER, Carly cheating with Sonny is disgusting.  And then her getting pissed off because he called her on her shit during their wedding, and has forever after acted as the injured party makes me vomit.

Jax, at least, seemed to feel badly for fucking Skye over, though Brenda never did, and enforced how much I hated her.  Jax and Brenda could never recover from that, for me.  Not to mention the way she acted about Sonny during their relationships.  She sucks.

I hope that when Sonny is finally murdered, he's burned alive in his ugly ass mansion and Carly and Brenda are trapped in there with him.

UNLESS... Jason and Carly finally have an affair... I might be willing to watch that.
