S03.E02: Bed Bugs And Beyond

A few quick thoughts:

-Gotta say, I am so glad they did not drag out the whole Piper ratting out Alex story. Can't say I really feel any pity for Alex considering she screwed over Piper twice now; I believe this is what is called evening the score. Could have done without the sex scene. Seriously, WTF? End the dysfunction!

-I don't like Aleida and her scheming but considering this baby's alternative is Cesar's crazy ass, there really aren't too many options on the table.

-Litchfield is "closing" in two months. Yeah, sure. I believe ya show. Sucks for Caputo though; dude is trying.

-Can we please get rid of Healy? Asshole.

-Oh yeah, Bennet's story.....................I don't really have much to add from what we saw.

I guess the lesson here is that there are worse things than bed bugs: Cesar.  Ho boy that was awful. Plus the kid is right: microwaved french fries suck.

After the deflated premiere, I felt this ep back on track with the OISNB quirky tone. The bug back story was more entertaining than the mother's day one - which I felt was presented too flat.

Same goes for the dialogue, that in this ep, contained a good handful of really funny and sharp lines.

"Two sadist, one gay" - Btw. Who else thinks that Pornstash's mother (aka Mama-stash) would  make a good job at raising the kid, like she would read to him/her a lot of Jules Verne?

(reference: the actress played in Back to the Future III)

And last but not least, kudos to the actresses, who didn't get paper-scrubs, for showing that women come in all shapes.

Next!

My thoughts exactly. Stakes are kind of low when you know there are 11 episodes left this season (unless the entire season takes place in two months). Caputo is great though. Serious improvement on Fig.

Color me a bit confused. Can someone please clarify Bennet's connection to Cesar, and to Lucy ( who he passed a birthday present to) ?

Cesar is Aleida's (Daya's mom's) baby daddy/drug dealer/the probable reason why both ladies are serving time. Lucy is Daya's little sister.

Ah, got it. Thanks so much for the reminder, Mya Stone!

So Bennet threw that crib away? Does it mean he doesn't want the baby raised in that house? Because I totally agree with him. Pornstache's mum seems to be a good person, but since she isn't actually related to the baby, they should give him to a good family. Anyway, that relationship is a boring mess. Another boring mess? Alex and Piper. Piper might be the worst, but I like her scenes with Red or the other women. Or Healy. But her relationship with Alex is too dysfunctional to me.

Ugh, Healy. Ugh.

I loved Bennett's dancing in the flashback.  He's fearless.

I was laughing at that scene. It was such an early 20s military dude thing to do, film a shirtless dance to Hollaback Girl.

I like Bennett, and don't exactly dislike Daya, but I can't blame him at all for wanting to get away from the situation after meeting Cesar.

No freaking way is the jail closing. It seems like a silly plot line for unnecessary drama, kind of like Piper being almost transferred last season.

Cesar gave him the crib because Bennett was planning to raise the baby by himself until Daya got out of prison. (Cesar suggested he get another girlfriend to help him.) So Bennett leaving the crib showed, I believe, that he no longer plans to try to raise the baby.

Makes me wonder if he is going to call off the engagement as well -- can you imagine marrying into a family with someone like Cesar ?  Regardless if the gun wasn't loaded, he pulled a gun and pointed at a kid because he wouldn't eat shitty microwave fries.  Who knows what Cesar would do if that kid ever talked back to him ?

So, flashback Bennet was basically Asher from How to Get Away with Murder. I know he and Daya have a very problematic relationship in terms of power and authority, but I think they're adorable together. It's not going to end well, but I loved the gum wrapper proposal.

I can't stand Daya's mother. She is seriously the worst.

I freaked out when Cesar pulled a gun on Emiliano. I feel so bad for all the kids in that house. I want to go save them all, but then I remind myself they're fictional.

And then there were Piper and Alex. Ugh. I love Red even more now for continuously calling Piper out on her shit.

I can see Bennett freaking out about being given the lucky crib after seeing how Daiya's siblings are treated.  The crib has to feel cursed.  Even though I'm totally over this storyline, I like how the first episode set up the themes for the rest of the season.

Pornstache's mom seems nice, but that would be a messed up situation even if the kid was his.

I have not watched beyond this episode, so I'm just speculating. I took it as he couldn't say no to the crazy man with the gun so he took the "lucky" crib, but didn't want anything out of that cursed house so he ditched it ASAP. I don't think it reflected on his want to raise the baby, though I have no clue how they're going to manage that.

I think that after meeting Daya's family, he wants out-he doesn't want to raise the baby, and he doesn't want himself or the baby to be locked in with her family in any way. Or maybe I am projecting because I would flee overseas permanently if I had to spend time with Aleida or Cesar for five minutes, let alone be related to them. They are just rancid.

I hope that Bennett tells Aleida about what Cesar has been up to.

That last fight scene turning into hot sex was just total BS.

My least favorite characters: Aleida, Big Boo and...Crazy Eyes. There, I said it. She was barely in this episode and she annoyed me. I am being really negative but I actually love love love this show.

So far I'm enjoying S4, but I agree that they are reaching for well-worn buttons with both the Alex/Piper hate fucking and Crazy Eyes. I think that character may have run out of runway.

What I liked about this episode is that you saw more Matt McGorry and less of the schmoopy Bennett/Daya stuff. HTGAWM showed that he can act in dramatic and funny scenes. If he left this show for that one I don't blame him. It's like John Bennett literally upgraded because he's a rich law student banging Paris Gellar now, and Viola Davis magically gave him his leg back.

Daya's mother is the worst. She and Bennet are delusional but mom is terrible.

I feel like Gloria is a way better mother figure for Daya.

Cesar would spill about the baby being Bennett if that were the case. There is no happy ending, for anyone in this situation.

I hope the Bennett/Daya baby drama gets wrapped up soon, because this episode exhausted my interest in the topic... and then some.

I know it's early still, but so far this season feels scattered and unfocused. The only plot I'm really interested in is the heroin. I'm not enthused about the "oh no the prison might close!" plot because that's clearly not going to happen. Or if it does, all the characters will be transferred elsewhere together. Once again, "big" plots like that are boring because the stakes are actually lower than more personal plots like "Piper accidentally steals a screwdriver." Remember all the fun that resulted from a moment of distraction? Man, I'm really missing season one.

Considering Bennet has never been my favorite character, I really liked this episode.   Seeing him in the army all fresh and new and after getting advise from Cesar. he is now a broken man trying to do the right think by his child.   Honestly I would find the show far more fascinating if they do give up the child then if they keep it.    I don't think I have ever like Bennet as much as I liked him in this episode.

I rather enjoyed the conversation between Red and Piper.  Red always gives the best advice.S

So what I got is that the prison is closing and all the inmates with minimal time have been release and everyone with more time will be relocated.  But most of the guards will be fired...well except for Caputo who actually has gained a bit of a rep.

The Bennet/Daya baby drama is my least favorite part of the show.  I hope that thread gets wrapped up soon but honestly the "happiest" ending I can come up with is for the baby to die.  How bleak is that?

I like that Black Cindy and Tastee are protecting Crazy Eyes from coming unglued with anyone disrespecting Vee.

How hard would it be for John to take the baby and raise it in secret as a single father until Daya got out of jail? I feel like they're making it overdramatic with Cesar and pornstache Mom being the only options.

Thank goodness Alex found out early. I did not need that dragged out all season.

My assumption is that CPS has to sign off on who takes custody of the baby; and in that case I think it would look very very suspicious, so I don't think it would be that easy. But I could be wrong about that.

The Bennett/Asher thing was exactly what I was thinking during that scene. Asher would love to take his shirt off and prance around to Gwen Stefani, but on HTGAWM it would be part of a former frat thing (like when he was by himself at the bonefire)

I enjoyed the episode a lot, but I agree that the idea of Litchfield closing seems unlikely and therefore not exciting.

Did anyone get a gross "women in prison 'B' movie" vibe from Alex and Piper's hatesex? I kept thinking one of them had to be dreaming because of the horrible porn music they played in the background. They've had hot sex many times, but THAT was not even lukewarm.

Can Piper get parole already? #SOoverher

Yeah, I've found Alex/Piper scenes hot int he past but I agree that was not. I just didn't buy either of them as either very angry or very turned on.

Hands down the worst sex scene of the show thus far between any two characters. I was watching a porn of Georgia Jones and her female roommate the other day. The two girls in that one "hate" each other and hurl insults and even some slapping and pushing. But of course pretty soon they are all over each other and clothes are coming off. That's great for a porno. But then I saw nearly the same exact scene happen between Alex and Piper on a serious drama show. Appallingly bad.

As terrible as Daya's mother is, having Pornstache's mother raise the baby is the lesser of all the evils. Putting their kid in Cesar's care would be terrible and Daya doesn't want to put her kid in foster care for three years. Although I understand Aleida's valid concern about the person who raised Pornstache raising her grandchild, that kid will be better off not having a gun pointed at his head for not eating microwaved french fries. Bennett and Daya tend to live in this dream world where they fantasize about how great things will be in the future so it's good that Bennett realized he needs to do what is best for his child (which means keeping that kid out of Cesar's household).

I don't think there's any way Bennett can raise the baby. CPS will try to put the baby with a relative, and if there are none suitable, they'd put him/her into foster care. Why would they consider Bennett as an option? And if he admits he's the father, he goes to jail.

Link to comment

My theory is that the idea was that they would get the baby placed with Cesar and he would be the official guardian.  However, Bennett would come and take the baby home and do the actual raising.

The scene was a big part of the promo for this season, so I would think the producers would agree.

I haven't seen any promos at all other than still pictures so I was completely unspoiled for that scene. I'm glad I was because I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if I had seen it before.  Seeing it the first time completely in context - especially after they had given her a hard time about her lack of showering - made it much better.

The Bennett backstory really showed his character. Comes in and acts all badass - but when the crap hit the fan he only covered his own butt and let someone else take the grenade.

I wish Gloria was Daya's mom - she is far more maternal, and actually cares about Daya - unlike her money grubbing can't be bothered with children mom.

I really like Bennett. I am sad he just disappeared. I know he got scared, but it is still his child. He should at least try to provide for it. He knows he could do a lot better than Daya's family. I hope he comes back and mans up.

And don't even get me started about Daya's mom. Her mother reminds me of my mother sadly. She leaches off the weak, and doesn't genuinely care about her children, just the benefits they provide. She needs a whack!

Are you my sister?!?!

I never thought Bennett was man enough to stick around - and I never got the feeling that he loves Daya.  Not to mention whatever he did feel for her seemed to evaporate when Spanish harlem started blackmailing him, starting with Daya and the prenatal pills.

Maybe his visit with Cesar clued him into what kind of screwed up life the baby will have, and he will ride in and save the day at birth - but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks for filling that in for me.  Since the flashback didn't actually show how that grenade scene ended I kind of thought we'd see another part at some point and maybe Bennett lost his leg kicking it out from under the other GI.  But I think you have the right interpretation.

It showed one of the other guy throwing himself on the grenade while Bennett jumped the other way - I wanna say it was the little skinny guy-

at 44:29 the guy throws the grenade in.  Someone yells "Bennett kick it out".  Bennett freezes panics and jumps the other way to safety -  but Hero guy jumps on it.
