'Chippendales Drama ‘Immigrant’ Starring Kumail Nanjiani Takes Off At Hulu'

Quote

Kumail Nanjiani is to star in and exec produce a drama limited series about the origin story of stripper troupe Chippendales.

The Silicon Valley star, who wrote The Big Sick with his wife Emily V. Gordon, has teamed up with Pam & Tommy creator Robert Siegel on Immigrant for Hulu.

The streamer has given the eight-episode project a straight-to-series order. It is the true story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee, an Indian American entrepreneur who started the Chippendales. Nanjiani will play Banerjee.

The series will detail the insane, darkly comedic, crime-ridden story behind the unique male revue that became a cultural phenomenon.

Interesting.

I just saw the trailer for The Big Leap. This got a lot of buzz? The trailer feels unwieldy, both for the size of the cast and the reality show premise.

It looks like maybe the reality show is just the vehicle for the premise of “life is about coming back from a punch,” but, yeah, that is what reality shows are about, but I’ll probably give it a try.

Oh wow. Back in April, I posted about an upcoming World of Darkness show. Now there's word of an Exalted show! The Exalted RPG is by the same people who do the World of Darkness, White Wolf. However, it's higher concept, a full-on fantasy world occupied by people with all kinds of odd looks and powers. Very tricky to do live-action. Considering how heavily it was inspired by anime, anime would probably be the best way to do it.

I'm interested. Somewhat skeptical. But I'm still going to follow development.

Another CW show in development...

‘Girls on the Bus,’ From Greg Berlanti and Julie Plec, Moves From Netflix to The CW (Exclusive)
BY LESLEY GOLDBERG     SEPTEMBER 1, 2021

Two years after the adaptation of New York Times journalist Amy Chozick’s novel Chasing Hillary landed at Netflix following a multiple-outlet bidding war, the drama inspired by a chapter of the novel has landed at The CW.

Currently back in the development stage, The Girls on the Bus chronicles four female journalists who follow every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates, finding friendship, love and a scandal that could take down not just the presidency but our entire democracy along the way. Sources caution that the potential series is not about Hillary Clinton or the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) and Chozick remain attached to pen the script, which is now being recalibrated for The CW audience. Greg Berlanti and his Berlanti Productions partner Sarah Schechter and head of television David Madden will all exec produce. The project hails from Warner Bros. TV, where Berlanti is under a massive $400 million overall TV deal. Plec, who moved her overall deal to Universal TV after a long tenure at WBTV, has a carve out for Girls on the Bus via her My So-Called Company banner.

Sources say Netflix quietly dropped Girls on the Bus last year after landing the project following a fierce bidding war. The drama, which had a production commitment and was beginning to cast at when the pandemic hit, was ultimately dropped as part of the streamer’s regime change from Cindy Holland (who bought it) to Bela Bajaria (who dropped it). Sources note that the political backdrop of the series was part of the reason Netflix ultimately bailed on the project. (Netflix did not return THR‘s request for comment.)

I question whether there's an audience for this. Bridgerton, for example, was an escape from the plethora of our world's ills. This is not that. But maybe it can be something else? A better version of reality?

"Retooling it for the CW audience" worries me. Is it going to be about crushes and sexcapades on the bus? They tried The Republic of Sarah this season and just cancelled it. I am not sure I trust them to handle this, either. But I don't think the brand is overly dour, so my fear is actually that it will be overly silly. Maybe one of the candidates will be a superhero.

Could be an interesting take; 'David & Georgia Tennant To Headline Jekyll & Hyde Thriller Drama ‘Hide’ In Works At Peacock'

Quote

Former Doctor Who star David Tennant is set to headline Hide, a drama series in development at Peacock. Tennant is attached to star and executive produce alongside his wife, actor Georgia Tennant. The project is written/executive produced by WGA Award-nominated showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters (Agent Carter) and directed/executive produced by Emmy-, BAFTA- and DGA-nominated director Julie Anne Robinson.

In Hide, a Jekyll & Hyde tale by way of a conspiracy thriller, a disgraced journalist (David Tennant) stumbles upon a story that could resurrect his career. But he quickly learns he’s seen something he shouldn’t have, and is now the target of unknown adversaries who will do anything to silence him. On the run as people around him go missing or die, a serious accident has an extraordinary side effect, and he realizes there are monsters in the world – and he may be one of them.

Robinson executive produces via her CannyLads, and Fazekas and Butters through their Fazakas & Butters. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where CannyLads is based, is the studio.

Tom Welling & Brendan Fraser’s ‘Professionals’ Heads To The CW
By Peter White    September 14, 2021
https://deadline.com/2021/09/brendan-fraser-tom-welling-professionals-the-cw-1234833113/

Quote

The CW is continuing its interest in international series. The youth-skewing network has acquired Professionals, a loose remake of the Christian Slater-fronted action movie Soldiers of Fortune for Scandinavian SVOD service Viaplay.

The series, which was first revealed by Deadline in 2019, stars Smallville’s Welling as Vincent Corbo, a top-tier security operative, who is paid to protect the interests of rich and powerful clients by any means necessary – legal or not.

After a next-gen medical satellite explodes on launch, Corbo is hired by the rocket’s designer – billionaire futurist Peter Swann, played by Fraser, who suspects sabotage. Complicating Corbo’s new gig is his former paramour and now Swann’s fiancée, medical visionary Dr. Grace Davila, played by Wonder Woman’s Elena Anaya, who is racing to help stave off a global catastrophe. As Corbo and his team of veteran security professionals investigate the rocket disaster, they expose a lethal conspiracy of Swann’s corporate rivals, corrupt government officials, and a shadowy crime syndicate – all working to destroy Swann and take control of his tech empire. Worse, Corbo must also contend with a rogue Europol agent, played by Inglourious Basterds’ Ken Duken, who is hellbent on busting him for past sins.

The CW acquired the ten-part series from Rainmaker Content.

The series was created by Jeff Most, who has produced features including The Crow and The Specialist, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Face/Off producer and writer Michael Colleary, who are co-showrunners and exec producers.

Gotham Knights Series in Development at The CW, Based on DC Comics
By Matt Webb Mitovich / December 13 2021
https://tvline.com/2021/12/13/gotham-knights-series-development-the-cw/

Quote

The CW has put into development Gotham Knights, a live-action superhero series based on the DC comics.

The premise: In the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, the TV series finds his rebellious adopted son* forging an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies, when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. Now branded the city’s most wanted criminals, this “renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names — but in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been.”

However, the logline tells us, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next MLB team generation of saviors known as… the Gotham Knights.

(*The character of Bruce’s adopted son has not been specified.)

Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux (both of Batwoman and Gotham) will serve as writers and executive producers on the project, while Natalie Abrams (Batwoman) is a writer/co-EP. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden will also serve as EPs.

Despite the aforementioned creatives’ shared pedigree and the setting, Gotham Knights is not a spinoff of The CW’s Batwoman, nor is it based on the Warner Bros. Games video game series of the same name. Got that, everyone?

James Gunn revealed he’s involved with another TV project for DC after Peacemaker. During an exclusive interview with Collider's own Steven Weintraub, Gunn confirmed that he’ll keep working with DC. However, the director didn’t reveal if the upcoming project is another spinoff of The Suicide Squad.

When asked if he was involved with another project for DC, Gunn tried to retain the mystery about his future productions. In Gunn’s words: “You know, we're stepping forward. It keeps happening. We'll see what's happening, and I'll know what's happening very shortly. I dealt with it last night and this morning.” However, once asked directly if this secret project would be for TV or film, Gunn gave a direct reply: “It's TV. There you go.”

‘Quantum Leap’ Reboot Set At NBC With Pilot Order

Quote

Quantum Leap’s long-rumored return has taken a big leap toward becoming a reality. NBC has given a pilot order to a reboot of the beloved 1990s sci-fi series, which starred Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell.

Written and executive produced by La Brea co-showrunners Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt and executive produced by Blindspot creator Martin Gero as well as Quantum Leap creator/EP Don Bellisario and EP/co-narrator Deborah Pratt, the follow-up series is set in present time. It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett (Bakula) stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.

Bakula is not attached to reprise his role or produce the new Quantum Leap but is aware of the reboot and has had conversations about potentially getting involved. Bakula’s co-lead on the original series, Dean Stockwell, died in November at age 85.

A live-action Dungeons & Dragons DungeonTV show! Spearheaded by Rawson Thuber, who wrote and directed Red Notice, a Netflix movie starring the Rock, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. Because that went so well, he's suddenly popular despite also writing and directing the Die Hard knockoff Skyscraper.

Anyway, we don't know if he's writing, directing, showrunning, or just some nebulous executive producer role.

In other news, there's still the D&D movie on the horizon. I remain curious but skeptical about both of these.

The CW orders pilots for Supernatural and Walker prequels, Gotham Knights
By Sydney Bucksbaum   February 03, 2022
https://ew.com/tv/the-cw-orders-pilots-supernatural-walker-prequels-gotham-knights/

Quote

The CW has officially ordered pilots for the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters — about Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean's (Jensen Ackles) parents John and Mary — as well as Walker prequel series Walker: Independence and DC series Gotham Knights, EW has learned. Additionally, the network has ordered six additional scripts for its Zorro reimagining, with a decision to be made about that series at a later date.

The Supernatural prequel series comes from executive producers Robbie Thompson, Ackles (who will also reprise his role of Dean to narrate), and Danneel Ackles, and will follow John and Mary Winchester before they became parents to Sam and Dean. The Winchesters is a one-hour drama that tells the epic love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world. No word yet on who will take over the iconic roles from Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith, who played John and Mary over the course Supernatural's entire run, along with Matt Cohen and Amy Gumenick who played younger versions in flashbacks.
*  *  *
Walker's prequel series Walker: Independence is a one-hour drama set in the late 1800s. From executive producers Seamus Fahey, Anna Fricke, Padalecki, Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, and Laura Terry, the origin story follows Abby Walker, an affluent Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West. On her quest for revenge, Abby crosses paths with Hoyt Rawlins, a lovable rogue in search of purpose. Abby and Hoyt's journey takes them to Independence, Texas, where they encounter diverse, eclectic residents running from their own troubled pasts and chasing their dreams. The newfound family will struggle with the changing world around them, while becoming agents of change themselves in a town where nothing is what it seems.

New DC series Gotham Knights is a one-hour drama based on the popular DC comics of the same name. The series will revolve around Batman characters, but it is not a spin-off of Batwoman, which is currently airing its third season. It is also not based on the upcoming Gotham Knights video game (slated for a 2022 release). From executive producers Chade Fiveash, James Stoteraux, Danny Cannon, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden, and co-executive producer Natalie Abrams, comes a new kind of Batman story: In the wake of Bruce Wayne's murder, his rebellious adopted son forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman's enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. And as the city's most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it's ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors known as the Gotham Knights.

As for Zorro, the one-hour drama (which is not the same as Wilmer Valderrama's upcoming Disney+ series) comes from executive producers Sean Tretta, Robert Rodriguez, Rebecca Rodriguez, Ben Silverman, Rodney Ferrell, Howard T. Owens, Geoff Clark, Eric Bromberg, John Gertz, and Jay Weisleder. If ordered to pilot/series, the show will follow a young Latinx woman seeking vengeance for her father's murder as she joins a secret society and adopts the outlaw persona of Zorro.

Another new series on the horizon doesn’t even have a title, just a code name: Grammar Rodeo, a reference to an episode of The Simpsons in which Bart and his schoolmates steal a car and run away for a week, using a phony educational event as an alibi. The show takes place during the post–Return of the Jedi reconstruction that follows the fall of the Empire, the same as The Mandalorian, but its plot remains a secret. It’s created and executive-produced by director Jon Watts and writer Chris Ford, who made Spider-Man: Homecoming for Marvel. A casting notice has called for four children, around 11 to 12 years old. Inside Lucasfilm, the show is being described as a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.

‘Speed Racer’ Live-Action TV Series From J.J. Abrams in the Works at Apple

Quote

A live-action scripted TV series based on the beloved manga and animated show is in the works at Apple, with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot set to exec produce the project.

Sources say Hiram Martinez (Snowpiercer, Get Shorty) is set to co-write the project and serve as showrunner as his “exciting take” on the source material is said to have impressed Apple, Bad Robot and Warners. Ron Fitzgerald (who works with Abrams on HBO’s Westworld), is the other co-writer and showrunner. Abrams and his Bad Robot banner are set to exec produce.

Sources say the live-action TV series has been in the works for years and stems from Abrams and Bad Robot’s overall deal with Warner Bros. TV. The show landed at Apple some time ago and has been in the process of meeting and hiring its co-writers in recent months as sources note the development process has been excruciatingly slow.

In development. A show based on The Wicker Man, from Andy Serkis' production company. Will he actually play the wicker man? :)

Anyway, if this goes through, I hope it's based on the original rather than the sequel or the remake. Neither of which I've seen, but by all accounts they aren't very good. I really should rewatch the original again.

"We love Nova. We are in really early development on Nova," Winderbaum told ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview available now on the Phase Zero channel. Rumors have long swirled about the character, each taking new shape with their claims of which format Nova's Marvel Cinematic Universe debut would take shape as. Winderbaum, overseeing the titles which go to Disney+, seems to be aiming for a series.

"We have a new system behind-the-scenes at Marvel Studios," Winderbaum said. "We're more like a traditional studio now. We're developing more than we actually will produce. There are plans to develop Nova. I love Nova, too. I love Rich Rider, too. I hope it gets to the screen. The world is always chaos. There's always things. You gotta conjure these things to make them happen but I would love to see a Nova show, one day."
