Blindspot Series Finale Video: Is the New FBI Boss Really Firing the Team?

Case in point: our exclusive sneak peek at the NBC drama’s series finale (Thursday, 9/8c), in which Arla — who was tapped to temporarily replace the dearly departed Matthew Weitz — dismisses Weller, Zapata, Patterson and Rich Dotcom from their roles at the FBI, even as Ivy Sands remains a threat.

“You’ve all been through a lot, but so has the bureau,” Arla bluntly tells the team. “This office has had its fill of tumult and aspersions. We need a reset — a new director, a new beginning.” (“Which, for us, means an ending,” Rich is quick to counter.)

It isn’t all bad news for the team: According to Arla, they’re all getting immunity deals and won’t have to pay legal consequences for the events of the past few months. But that’s not exactly enough to soften the blow of what Arla says next.

Blindspot wraps up its five-season run on Thursday with a series finale that also happens to be its landmark 100th episode. Titled "Iunne Ennui," the series' final hour picks up immediately after Jane (Jaimie Alexander) has been injected with ZIP once again, the threat of her losing her memory rearing its ugly head.

But, as ET's exclusive sneak clip of the opening scene from the series finale reveals, the team can breathe a sigh of relief -- for now, at least. Jane, they learn, is still Jane after they give her a powerful antidote to counteract the effects of ZIP. Whew.

"Do you remember who we are?" Patterson asks nervously.

"Of course I do," Jane says exasperated, before asking the team to fill her in on what led her to getting zipped once more. Her reaction to finding out that the drug is in her system again says it all. "Wait, how do I remember?"

"Since we've been hunting these things, we've been working on a pretty powerful antidote just in case this happened to one of us," Patterson shares. "We dosed about an hour ago. I guess it worked."

Though Ivy Sands (Julee Cerda) is still on the run, Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) and company assure Jane they've retrieved all of her bombs. But something tells us, things are about to get a whole lot messier. Watch ET's exclusive sneak peek above.

"I think a lot of people were worried from the previous episode that Jane would not have her memory this episode. We get that right out of the way," creator Martin Gero exclusively tells ET of the series finale opener. "What's also really beautiful about that sequence is seeing everybody and remembering it for the first time. We cut to some of the first times we've seen the characters; some of it is from their screen tests even, footage that has never aired that we found and pieced together."

"That's an early idea of what's going to happen [in the final episode]," he says. "It's going to be a lot about the present, a lot of the past and hopefully, an eye to the future."

Blindspot boss previews the team’s final mission

Madeline Burke (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) may be gone, but the team has to wrap up one last loose end: Ivy Sands (Julee Cerda). If it was surprising to see Madeline, the bane of the team's existence this season, die in that showdown on the plane, then that was intentional. The unexpected ending is par for the course for the twist-filled series, but it also allows the final episode to be all about the team. "We wanted to give Madeline this proper space and pay tribute to that character in a way that we wouldn't have had time for in the finale," creator Martin Gero explains.

"We wanted to give the maximum amount of space to focus on the team and our characters that had been there for five years," he adds.

Stopping Ivy won't be the only pressing matter, at least for Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander), who was exposed to ZIP at the end of last week's episode. "You'll see immediately what that choice allowed us to do," Gero says, "We wanted Jane to be Jane, but we wanted there to be a tenuous hold on reality, let's put it that, that would help us tell a story that is a final and proper conclusion."

"This is an hour that is very aware that is the last hour in many ways," Gero teases. First off, this will be the team's final mission together with the FBI. "They're about to scatter in the wind on the show as well as in real life," he adds.

Fortunately for longtime Blindspot fans, this final adventure is a love letter to the team's journey. "There's a real reverence for this final time together in a way that is going to be super satisfying," says Gero. "We have some really fun guest stars coming back one more time to say goodbye to the show."

"We hope it will be a deeply satisfying conclusive to your 99 hours with us," he adds.
