S21: Before The Episode

Shannen Doherty did the show in season 10. She's easily forgotten because she and Mark were the first eliminated couple that season.

Wow, totally blocked that out.

The last season I really watched was the Meryl/Charlie/James Maslow season.  The past few seasons I would just watch the performances on youtube (mainly Alfonso's performances).

I'm hoping for some good celebrities to entice me into watching.

Lindsey Stirling might be an interesting choice. She definitely has internet cred...plus dancing is an integral part of her performance persona.

It's unlikely that DWTS could get Ronda Rousey from UFC at this point (not impossible though) so I'd take a flier on Paige Van Zant. She's got all the hype at the moment, but working a fall or spring season around her training/fight schedule could be an issue.

How much of ringer would Sutton Foster be? Or heck, Hillary Duff from her show Younger...

As for some guys, Brad Paisley could be a riot. He'd probably be the one country star of his ilk that would be up for it (especially if you added his wife to the cast as well) Scott Van Pelt (an ESPN personality) would be funny but a partnering challenge due to his height, or maybe David Lambert the younger actor who plays Brandon on ABC Family's Meet the Fosters in lieu of a Disney person this season...

Ayesha Curry - Stephen Curry's wife (reigning NBA MVP - who's battling Lebron James in the finals right now).  I know she does Youtube videos of her recipes.  I think she's gonna have their 2nd child sometime soon, so it would be a good way for her to get back into shape after the baby.  Plus, I'm all for any appearances by their 2 year old daughter Riley who is super adorable.

There were rumors that Sutton was Derek's original partner that dropped out at the last minute before they signed Nastia. In terms of how much of a ringer, like all ringer discussions, I'd say it depends on who they'd put her with, and if you (royal you) are a fan of theirs or not. ;)

Link to comment

I wasn't aware of those rumors kitcloudkicker.

They would have been a juggernaut. I generally don't mind ringers one way or the other. Without ringers we wouldn't have been able to enjoy the skills of Zendaya, all the ice skaters, Riker etc.

I like the Ayesha Curry call too, very current/topical. I'm a huge sports tv guy (hence my previous Scott Van Pelt reference)....so another on-air personality who is currently on the NBA Finals coverage and could work would be Sage Steel. Another person from way back in the time machine (who completely disappeared) would be Jonathan Taylor Thomas from Home Improvement. He would be an amazing get for DWTS. Or maybe Scott Michael Foster from Greek, and Chasing Life (both ABC Family properties)....

I can't see any UFC contenders, let alone the champ, doing this. Maybe when they are retired. It doesn't fit as well with their brand to do this over pursuing movies.

At this point, I can see them pursuing Riley. They could do a mini-dancers special on a results show night and have her as the featured toddler. Lol

anonymiss, we've had two UFC representatives so far (Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture). Both were either completely retired already, or they had one foot out the door and one foot already into acting roles. UFC is still a niche (growing for sure) sport and the stars aren't household names across the country. I think a savy fighter would jump at the opportunity to get his or her name out there on such a mainstream platform. Plus DWTS is still an athletic endevour at its core which is why we've had so many athletes from such a wide range of disciplines. We suffered through a season of Evander Holyfield and Floyd Mayweather Jr. too...

And for Women's UFC, I think the same holds true to an even higher degree. Rousey's already done SI Swimsuit, acted in the Fast and Furious movie....Gina Carano before her was the glamorous fighter who crossed over into some action movies. Van Zant could be the heir apparent or simply a flash in the pan. It's too early to tell, but if DWTS was going to go back to the UFC well for a third time....she'd be high up on their list of targets. Somebody from a different sport but a similar profile would be Anastasia Ashley, the professional surfer and model.

On a scale of 1 to the apocalypse, how earth shattering would Sasha Grey or Belle Knox/Miriam Weeks (the Duke University porn star) in the DWTS ballroom be? Would it break the internet in 2015?

Isn't that what I just posted? ;) i.e., If they are retired, then maybe. You named the Champ and a contender so it's gonna be awhile, if at all. It doesn't fit their brand as well (not saying not at all) as action roles so it's what they'd resort to after those stop.

I don't think we've had any baseball players right?  I was thinking Johnny Damon might be someone who would be up for this.  I think he just did celebrity apprentice.

Carli Lloyd, maybe. She scored the hat trick, and she's more in line with the more "girly" female athletes they've had. I don't know how else to put it even though I know it sounds bad.

I agree. Before the WWC I would've said Alex Morgan or Sydney LeRoux because of their larger visibility thanks to social media/instagram/part-time modeling careers. But I think Lloyd's performance in the final might give her the edge if DWTS comes calling...which I'm almost certain they will...

This show has disappointed me so much lately that pre-season speculation has become my favorite part of thewhole thing.

Going back a few pages, I'm on board with getting someone from Dawson's Creek. It's one of those nostalgic shows that hasn't been tapped into yet. Plus I think they just started airing repeats on ABC Family, so there's a connection. Would LOVE to see James Van Der Beek. I've really enjoyed seeing him loosen up in the years since the show ended and now having what seems to be a good sense of humor about himself. I think he would be fantastic on DWTS. I'd also love to see Josh Jackson, but I have a feeling he wouldn't be interested.

I don't know what their filming schedule is like, but it wouldn't surprise me to see someone from Girl Meets World filling the requisite Disney role at some point. I think I've said this before, but rather than one of the kids (a bit too young yet), I'd love to see Ben Savage or Danielle Fishel.

I know I DON'T want to see any more "inspirational" contestants who can't actually dance. As a person with a disability, at first I thought it was great that they were giving people like Noah a shot, but after awhile it just became uncomfortable to watch the fawning and CAI's tears and the lack of progress.

I could see DWTS making a run for the One Direction guy that left the band, Zayn I think. He'd bring in a massive fan base and has some dance experience.

The only one I really see from Girl Meets World would be Sabrina Carpenter, but she would be a Willow Shields redux. Similar personalities, styles, etc. I do think they'll ask her one day, but in a few seasons. Danielle Fishel by all accounts already had chances to join and turned them down. I see Debby Ryan as this year's Disney Kid. She's older and she'll be coming off a tour with Fifth Harmony.

I also think we'll see someone from the new Fuller House reboot if there's a break in filming. They have the relationship with Candace and the show will want the publicity boost. Maybe the actress that plays Kimmy Gibbler or Lori Laughlin?

I think we might see Amy Schumer to this season, but I'm hoping she thinks she's too good for that. She's guested on the Bachelorette, she is having a huge summer movie, she should be in between filming on her CC show.

Then just for giggles, I hope we get Jon Stewart. He's certainly not doing anything in the fall.

Someone who could legitimately be in play might be Avril Lavigne. She's recently made the talk show rounds this summer talking about her battle w/ lyme disease. She's also not so far removed (like a decade) from when she still was a viable "pop star", and I could see her seeing DWTS as a way to provide the visibility that could re-spark her career. She's so tiny though, they might have to consider bringing Sasha back to partner her....she can't be more than an inch or two taller than Snooki was.

If Saylii's right, Lori Loughlin has been one of my dream gets for the cast. But, I'm sure in the tradition of Bristol or Sadie....they'd probably offer it to Candace first, to stir up the religious angle and the Christian voting bloc.

For the requisite comedian spot, Jim Gaffigan could fit the bill. He's got a brand new sitcom on TV Land, and I could easily see him end up having a similar appeal to Bill Engvall.

I apparently managed to block that viewing experience out entirely. My bad.

I still feel like they will attempt to stoke the religious, family values voting bloc. Have to think a little more critically on who that might be now...

If only one of those Duggars would dance! (Tongue planted firmly in cheek).

If only they were allowed to dance!  Yes, even as adults, their dad still tells them what to do/not to do. And they believe dancing is shaking around body parts unnecessarily. They're also extremely modest. Not Bristol/Sadie/Candace modest, but blurring out knees modest.

So if only they believed in dancing and costumes... (My tongue is now planted firmly in cheek).

Hey, with the Duggars needing a new way to remain relevant (I mean, a way to "minister"), you never know what they might do. Hard times calling for desperate measures & all. LOL Realistically though, the closest we'd probably ever get would be cousin Amy, but she's even less relevant than the rest of them at this point.

I can see someone from Fuller House doing it and I'd be on board with any of them. But if I were to submit my wish... Stamos DID just get out of rehab and the show would probably love to exploit that in addition to promoting the new show. ;-) Lori or Andrea (Kimmy) would be lovely, too.

How about a news person? I've wished for Anderson Cooper for years, and I remain surprised that Robin Roberts hasn't done it because she seems to be friendly with Maks and Val, I think.

If they were going to go with another person with a differing ability, maybe Bethany Hamilton? I know we just had Noah, but Bethany has had more time to adjust, seems like a happy and confident girl, and obviously as a surfer she's very athletic and has good balance. She recently had a baby, and I think she's also religious, but I get the impression that she's not as extreme in her promotion of it as some. I also think her situation doesn't carry with it the baggage (for lack of a better term) that Noah's story did. In other words, I think people would respect her and her story, but not necessarily feel compelled to vote for her beyond her performance. That's what we need if they decide to go with that type of contestant again.

As I'm going through my Twitter list looking for ideas, I just came across our beloved Tristan. Sigh. Wish there was a chance he'd come back to DWTS.

She's been getting a lot of attention lately for dating Quarterback Russel Wilson, whom I've seen mentioned on "Wish List" boards before, but I'm curious if they've ever considered Ciara. I'd say she's no different than having Nicole S. or Mya in terms of popularity and former dance training. Just throwing it out there because I've never thought of her before but once I did think of her I was like, why did I never think of her?

Yes, oh yes for James Vanderbeek! I'd also like to see Vernon Davis, from the SF 49ers. He was on "Whose Line is it Anyway?" a month or so ago and he threw himself into it. Great attitude, very likeable, killer smile (OK, so he'll have to wait for a spring season...). Just for grins, I'd like to see a gender bending duo of RuPaul and Lea DeLaria (comedian, "Orange is the New Black") . Also I think Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring, "Breaking Bad") would do well -- he looks like he'd be very graceful on the dance floor. I also second Jim Gaffigan and Carli Lloyd. Bethany Hamilton and her hubby were adorable on "The Amazing Race." I'd love to see her on "Dancing with the Stars."

So....we are roughly 3 weeks away from the September 2nd cast reveal. A few of the names that are showing up on a number of cast rumor articles (so take this with an ocean of salt) include Caitlyn Jenner (although the vast majority of her mentions state that a S21 appearance is unlikely), Kaitlyn the Bachelorette, Shay Mitchell of PLL, Jamie Chung, Ricky Schroeder, an unnamed former MLB star, and even the actress who plays Flo the Progressive lady has shown up in a couple of these stories over the last couple of days...

Not a comprehensive list at all...feel free to add on when necessary..

And as I'm writing this, stupid DwtS new theme-y song 'Shut Up and Dance With Me' comes on... Oh welcome back.

Personally I'm not even sure why this whole Pro reveal became a thing. Other than maybe one person, it's the same Pros we already know. What's exciting about finding out that Val, Derek, Mark, Witney, Peta, etc. will be back?

I think the Pro reveal has become a "thing" because it seems the first thing fans want to know is "is my favorite pro returning".  That seems IMO to be a bigger concern for fans than who the stars are-many of which are kinda unknown by many anyways.   Yes, there is a lot of gossiping about stars too.  From the show's standpoint, revealing the pros earlier allows the pros to get on twitter and start ramping up the excitement.

Well, I like Karina so if we can't have Kym, I'm glad she's back. I still never managed to warm up to Allison so I was hoping she'd be out but it sounds like she's back. Doesn't seem like too much shake-up on the female side unless Peta, Emma, or Sharna are out.

.

I'm wondering about Peta - I heard she was nursing a foot or ankle injury.

James Van Der Beek would be pretty awesome. As much as I disliked him back in the Dawson's Creek years, he has sort of endeared himself to me now. It's a shame that this could not retroactive the awesomeness that was The B in Apartment 23 though. As for the Fuller House cast, it isn't a longshot that they might ask someone, the goal and dream is of course Stamos but I doubt he would say yes, LL is a good bet of maybe a possibility.

I'm not really sure if there's anyone I can think of. Last seasons Spring season was kind of..blah.  I liked all the dancing. But by the end of the season, even weeks before, I had a feeling I knew Rumor would win, not that she didn't deserve it but I knew it would probably be her or Riker because they were the best two. It just kind of was. I feel like the casts are always a hit or miss with me.

I don't care much about the Pros. I don't really have a favorite.

Link to comment

Did anyone watch? I didn't but jumped on Twitter to see. It doesn't sound like all the pros were revealed? I don't understand why they bother. I know they need to work out the final details with celebs and pairings but if you can't announce everyone, just hold off until the actual cast reveal. Or announce one pro/day on social media in the two weeks leading up to the cast reveal. Hyping it on GMA and not having a full foster is a bit lame and just looks like another chance for TPTB to pimp Val and Derek, to be honest.

The part I bolded is a great idea IMO.

Link to comment

Karina, Sharna, Peta, Witney and Allison on the female side. Val, Derek, Mark and Artem on the male side. Apparently there will be more pros revealed later. Probably still finishing contract negotiations with celebs. I get that they might have felt that news were starting to leak in earnest (mostly Karina?) and they needed to make an announcement about the stuff that's already decided. But wouldn't a press release have been enough? That GMA bit was underwhelming.

Link to comment

It just seems like there has been a lot of changes/revisions/additions/subtractions going on leading up to this season...and is still going on... with the judges and pro's. I wouldn't be surprised if nothing is truly ever finalized until it is announced live on air. It may have always been like this...but it's becoming increasingly apparent to me how they put together the show.

Derek AGAIN? *eyeroll*  Whom do I have to blow at ABC to get him put into a time out for a season or five?

I believe he's still under contract. I remember him saying that last season. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong though...maybe 1 more season or something like that.  Generally speaking I think all the pro's ain't going nowhere until their contracts are finished. Sometimes I feel bad for the pro's because those contracts are no joke.

He said one more year before S20, if I recall correctly, so this would be his last season on that contract. That's also why Kym was back last season, to honor her contract since she hadn't been on since S16. It seems that the longer standing pros have way different contracts than the newer ones.

Link to comment

So, no real big surprise from the Pros then. I probably could have written that list down myself without even watching it today. The only one up in the air may have been Peta but that's due to her injury.

ETA: I kind of wish the contracts weren't so locked in as I think the show should cycle in new pros every two seasons. I think the pros are becoming just as famous or more than the "Stars" they dance with and I personally think thats a problem. Thats when a new pro comes in, they don't have much of a chance against a pro like Derek or Mark. Thats just my feeling.

I think it's more problematic on the male side, but I don't know how to address it. I understand why the pros are coming back every season, it's steady income and exposure. There's also always a risk that you get passed by other dancers if you decide to sit out one season. And, unpopular opinion on my side: I totally get why Derek, Mark, Val and Tony have been on for so long. And why they would be hard to replace. They each bring something very specific when it comes to skill set, performance and "type". The show is also in its 21st season. Let's face it, they can't really attract great celebs anymore. So they're probably mostly happy that the pros are recognizable as well, even though that might have detrimental aspects.

I think Derek was relaying the info on his remaining contract time differently on different interviews.  I recall at the end of last season he told one interviewer "1 season" and another interviewer "1 year". (I don't think he was being misleading, just, like the rest of us sometimes mix up this season/this year.)  Sorry, I don't remember which interviews.

I think once the pros complete their initial multi-year contract, when they re-sign they've got a little more bargaining power and the number of seasons/years can vary.  I think the longer-standing pros are needed by the show not only for season-to-season continuity for the viewers but also to help train the newbies on how the show works, how to put on a show, how to deal w/celebs, how to deal w/interviews and sudden fame, etc.  I do believe there's a grooming process that happens for new pros and I doubt TPTB provide any of that - I think it's the veteran pros working with the new pros/troupe.  It may be different now, especially with new pros coming from SYTYCD, but years ago I don't think the pros even had their own managers when they signed on.

The Bachelors are more likely than the Bachelorettes, though if TPTB want drama (or people to tune in thinking there'll be some), they will pick Kaitlyn. And then ask Nick to be in the audience every night.
