A's fans were still able to make their fury at the Astros known when the teams played in Oakland last night. They may not be physically allowed in the stadium, so they did the next best thing:

I read that Houck said he was "bummed" that he would missing a start. Hmmm, if only there was something he could have done to make sure he could play in every park.

I am so glad the Yankees won these two games at home! Going out on the note of Friday's game would have just been awful for all involved. Instead, they proved that they weren't going to back down, the crowd rallied behind them and they made it happen. It seems too much to hope for that Kluber will be off again on Wednesday, but I have faith this offense might be able to stay hot and challenge him. If the Yankees can get the CC that pitched in Game 2 (maybe settled down even earlier this time!), things have a good chance of being ok. It's anybody's game! 

I'm annoyed the Dbacks didn't even get a win, it would have been nice to see the Dodgers squirm a bit. I really hope the Nats pull off a win today because I want another Game 5 AND I would prefer they move on, but the Cubs probably have a better shot at eliminating the Dodgers, so I guess I'm ok with whichever happens. 

Oh, one more thing! I am SO psyched about how present and loud and into it the crowds at Yankee Stadium have been so far this postseason! In 2012, I went to an ALCS game there vs. the Tigers. The Yankees hadn't had a good series and were on the brink of elimination and I was able to get in for super cheap, and the crowd was dead. It was like a funeral taking place! This team, this group of guys, is so fun and full of energy that even when they come home with a tall task ahead of them, the crowd is able to stay in it and help them along and it's fantastic. The Stadium has been louder this week than  maybe ever before and I love it. I hope the Yankees get a chance to play there again this year so much!

One would have to assume that the Yanks would have won every day after winning that one that got away. Predetermined outcomes don't always happen. Winning on Friday doesn't guarantee we win the next 2. I didn't think game 5 would come, tbh.

I’ve read the stories and heard analysis and I STILL don’t understand the deal with Strasburg.  And somehow Dusty Baker is getting sucked in to the fallout?

Wow.  John Farrell is out.  Was this season WS or bust for Boston?

Farrell should have been fired last year and Torey Lovullo should have been given the job as he was already in house. Now Torey is in Arizona and DD has to find a new manager. So many mistakes made in Boston the past few years.

I want to be annoyed with all the shenanigans around will he/won't he, Strasburg starting before the game, but like Maddon said yesterday, "you can't cry about it, you've just got to go out and win against whoever is pitching" or something like that.  And the Cubs most decidedly did not do that today. Either they fix that tomorrow night or this frustrating season ends in DC.

Yeah, they really should have cut bait with Farrell last year.

That said, while I agree that firing Farrell is the right move, it's definitely not going to magically solve all Boston's problems.

Hah, well, you could probably ask 30 different Red Sox fans that question and get 30 different answers. ;) For me, what it comes down to is that Farrell just never seemed to be able to inspire the team to play up to their capabilities on a consistent basis, or in the biggest moments. Despite winning back to back AL East titles, the Sox have looked way too flat at too many crucial moments over the last two years. When Farrell had to take a leave for cancer treatments a couple years ago and Torey Lovullo (who was then bench coach) stepped up as interim manager, the team just seemed so much more into, and mentally in, the games. They responded to Lovullo noticeably better. So I guess I would say that I don't think Farrell was a bad manager, per se, but he just didn't end up connecting with the team or being the right fit in the way everyone hoped.

That said, I'm not sure I would have ranked Farrell in the top 3 of Boston's problems this season. Payoll+several bad contracts are going to haunt this team for the next half a decade or so; the star players have to nut up and play better when it counts (yeah, Farrell can't get them going, but at some point the players have to take accountability); and the clubhouse character problems are going to remain as long as several players are on the Sox. That's actually why I just couldn't get too upset when they were bounced this year...I mean, I expected it because the 'Stros are a much better team, but also, this year's Sox were just pretty dang unlikeable imo.

Congrats mojoween.  Time and time again, I forget the ever important lesson taught to us by Felix Unger about what happens when one ASS-U-MEs something. I assumed the Yankees were done, I was wrong.  Enjoy tonight, best of luck going forward.  I'm also happy that Joe Girardi's time with the Yankees, which well may end after this year, doesn't end on something awful like the blown challenge....you never want to see something like that.

I'm with you.  I was at the game tonight and, once again, Yankee fans proved themselves the most obnoxious in baseball.  Several in my section had to be escorted from the premises by the gendarmes when they wouldn't stop behaving like jerks. A kid, about 10 or so, accompanied by 3 adult men, all in Yankee gear, did nothing but taunt and gloat, all sprinkled liberally with profanity. This went on for the last 4 innings. Really inexcusably awful behavior.  If Yankee fans wonder why everyone else roots against them, they should take a look in the mirror.

That being said, the Indians played sloppy, terrible baseball the last couple games and nobody gets away with that in the playoffs.

Haha. As an Orioles fan, never. If the Red Sox and Yankees played, I would pretend that game didn't exist because there is just too much hate to go around. Congrats to your team, though. Poor Indians- win streak and 100 win season down the drain like that. Should have taken care of things in NY.

One of the things that strikes me about postseason play is the lack of fielding plays. All the pitchers concentrate on striking out batters, so they get these long at bats and wear themselves out. Then if anyone hits something, the fielders have been tense for hours, and they're ineffective. Look at all the errors made by otherwise good fielding teams! 

Lesson to pitchers: let your team work behind you!

Oh, yeah: go yanks!

Re: John Farrell, my big regret is that I never got to meet him.  He was on the AAA Maine Guides when he was coming up with Cleveland, and I have an old T-shirt from those days that I wanted to get in a photo with him.

Also: GD Yankees.

This Yankee team is just really easy to root for. I know chemistry is bred from a winning environment but they really seem to be clicking and obviously enjoy each other. They remind me of the 2012 Giants in that way, and in their resiliency (that team also fought back from down 2-0 in the NLDS). This game even had an AB that reminded me of one late in that Game 5 (Romo vs. Bruce, Allen vs. Gardner). Houston is a tall order but pretty much everyone on this team has shown up already this postseason, and the few that have struggled have been picked up by the others around them. I know a lot of fans find it easy to hate the Yankees and their fans, I'm used to that, but this has got to be one of the most likeable Yankee teams in awhile. I'm excited for them.

And I'm just so happy for Joe Girardi. Man, was he eating himself up about Game 2. I felt awful for him that it was the narrative that would not die and I'm relieved for him that his 25 guys were able to make it moot. Rarely do you see a manager with his heart on his sleeve as much as Joe's was since Friday and I'm glad he can really put that behind him. 

I do feel awful for Cleveland and their fans though. Had the Yankees not advanced, I would have been rooting for them onward. They had a fantastic season and made their 162 a real fun journey for their fans. It's why these five-game postseason series can be such a gut punch. The Yankees are good, and the Yankees played better, and the Yankees deserve whole-heartedly to advance, but the Indians are also great and young and talented. I think they will get it done sooner than later.

I agree especially about how Lovullo connected with guys when he took over for Farrell. Farrell came back and the team went right back to underachieving.

I have a rule that applies to all sports:  if I know the name of a sports team owner and it isn't my team, chances are extremely high that the owner is a jerk and I therefore hate the team.  As long as the Steinbrenners are involved, I will dislike the Yankees.

Now rooting for the Astros, as I grew up near Houston and rooted for them all during the Biggio years.  Craig is still the standard by which I measure all major leaguers, and I still haven't quite forgiven the HOF for making him wait until the third ballot.

My husband and I didn’t know each other in our teens, when I was a Mets fan.  I found out during our courting that he liked the Reds and A’s while growing up and haaaaaaaaaaated the Yankees and everything they stood for.

We married in 96 and I had been out of paying much attention to sports at the time.  I oozed my way back in around 2000 and am now as rabid about football, basketball and baseball as a bitten weasel but he watches if it’s on, he doesn’t seek it out.

The other night, I was in another room and I heard him swearing at the ump and when I looked, the Yankees were at bat.  I did it!  I indoctrinated him!

Got to admit I did not think the Yanks could pull out a game 5 vs Kluber. I thought there was no way he could be less than perfect for 2 consecutive starts but happily, he proved me wrong. Has there been any talk in Cleveland that perhaps he may be fatigued or hurt?

I'm not so much rooting against Houston as I am rooting for my team, of course. If Houston does win, they will be the team I root for in the WS. 

I hope Dodgers get eliminated to eliminate the West coast (sorry west coasters).

DiDi Gregorius is my guy. Period. MVP for the team. 

Tanaka starts Game 1, Seve Game 2. Sabathia Game 3. Likely Sonny Gray in 4th

I still forget they are in the AL.  I guess now it'll be ingrained in me now that it's the AL Championship Series. When they played during the season I thought it was inter league. Wish they had moved Brewers back instead of 'Stros because as it is I've pretty much forgotten Milwaukee exists. I'm old school...Yanks, BoSox, Indians, Brewers, Orioles and Blue Jays.

A friend of mine likes to quote the Official Rules of Major League Baseball - 

1.00 – OBJECTIVES OF THE GAME

1.01 (1.01) Baseball is a game between two teams of nine players each, under direction of a manager, played on an enclosed field in accordance with these rules, under jurisdiction of one or more umpires. 

 

He then points out that the AL is playing an interesting game, but it clearly isn't baseball.
