Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

The Politics Policy is still in effect. A participants social media is NOT an invitation to discuss their political view points. Consider if discussion of certain social media posts will cause you to violate the politics policy BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

What insurance is Jill talking about? If it's Medicaid (probably), braces are covered only in extreme circumstances. Samuel looks fine as is, and even Phillip's teeth are not extreme, although braces would make sense for him. Jill just decided to spend money on Samuel for some reason. Maybe he'll get featured in advertising materials for the Smile Direct company and Jill will get some money back.

Whatever went on in that head of hers, Jill obviously needed to buy a giant clock for herself more than she needed to spend the stimulus money on health services for her children.

Samuel is the darker brother? My guess is Jill decided to spend money on his perfectly fine teeth because he's the best-looking of the Rod males (it's a very low bar, I know), and maybe he's now the golden child that Kiefer Tim was before his fall from grace.

I think that you’re exactly right.  She knows that Samuel is probably going to be the first of the Rod male offspring to find a mate because of his good looks.

So yeah...on the topic of Janessa's third birthday at Chuck E Cheese...this always was a "thing that makes me go HMMMMMM".

Isn't the whole premise of Chuck E Cheese basically gambling, but geared towards kids?   Hear me out.  So you convert real money into chips/tokens in order to "play" a game.  You test your skill/luck at said game and you could POSSIBLY win tickets, which can then be converted to overly priced prizes.  If you hit big, you win big.  Sounds a little like Vegas Jr. to  me.  So some of the games are guaranteed payouts, such as the games geared towards younger players.  Others, not.  You pump money into these games and it's the same areas of the brain that are responding as when someone gambles.

So if gambling is such a heinous sin, why is this form of gambling acceptable to the Rods?  For people who take the Bible so dang literally, this is kind of a no-brainer, I would think?  But I guess as long as you bring ONE person at the Skee Ball to Jee-sauce, all sins are forgiven.

My friend once called it “The Mechanical Rat Child Casino”  😂

I’m assuming they don’t see it as gambling, or they don’t care. “Rules for thee, but not for me” and all that.

I think Janessa is in the high chair for hours. It’s a good device to keep her in place. She is so scrawny she still fits in there.

No more breast milk no more nourishment. She is not looking well. Skinny, hunched over, looks ill.

Welcome to the hell house aka the Rod barn.

Next time the cops are trying to get a killer to confess, I suggest they use that.  Was that Phillip singing? Wow!  That takes the definition of 'tone deaf' to an entirely different level.  I guess it does take a certain type of talent to sing every single note off-key.

In other news, Josie and Kelton did a Q & A on her Instagram stories while waiting for their appointment at the OBGYN.  They did not wait for their wedding to kiss.  They were masked so you couldn't really see their expressions but they did not seem to be guilty about it.

I was just coming here to mention this. I feel like probably way more of the Bates kids did not wait until their wedding kiss. I believe Zach and Whitney admitted it before, and I seriously doubt Nate & Lawson are waiting with their current girlfriends, especially as they don't seem to be following the chaperone rule. Hey, good for all of them! I can't imagine waiting until my wedding to kiss someone...or other things, but I am a heathen, so not shocking.

I'm curious if any of the daughters need glasses. I can't imagine Jill would want to have girls in glasses unless they needed them to get a driver's license.

I could only manage minutes thirteen through sixteen of Phillip's sermon, skipping as much of the singing as possible. He's talking about having had a burden to be a missionary in Africa. Then he saw something in a pamphlet about "the hungry people." He thought "hungry" was a country [as in the Italy people or the America people, I suppose], so eventually he looked on a globe. There it was in the middle of Europe but spelled with an "a." He asked God why he wasn't supposed to minister to the black people, and God told him that the words in the pamphlet were a way to lead him to God's real choice for him--Hungary.

It sounds as if he's gung ho on saving the desperate, heathen Hungary people now and will need donations. It appears his real burden is to lead a life just like his parents'.

He needs decent meals way more than he needs anything done to his teeth.

One thing really bothers me about the rods, is when they show pictures of their meager holiday meals they look even more pathetic if you take into account the fact that they are feeding the bottomless pits that are known as teenaged boys. My son is still at that stage, and when I was a kid my teenaged brothers would eat cereal by the mixing bowls full. The amount of food teenaged boys can put away is unreal.   My mom always cooked huge meals so my brothers would leave enough for the rest of us, and I do the same when feeding my son and his friends.  I'm not saying that the boys deserve any more food than those poor starving girls, it's just one more example of Jillrod's cluelessness.

I know what you mean. My husband has three teenage nephews and I count each of them as four people when I'm planning recipes for holiday dinners. The Rodlet boys must be constantly starving.

The predominant religion in Hungary is Catholicism, somewhere between 50-60% of people living there claim to be Catholic.  As we know, Catholics are not real Christians and they must be saved and worship the real Jesus.  That is why God wants Phillip to go there.  Contrast with the black people who are NOT 50-60% Catholic.  Of course, Jesus wants Phillip to save the Catholics first.

You'd think she'd get a clue from the amount David apparently eats.

But I kwym.I don't have any brothers, but when my cousin from Fl came to stay with us,he would eat a whole mixing bowl full of mashed potatoes every day for dinner. My mom told him if he would go dig them from the garden, she would fix them. He'd never had food fresh from a garden,so that was a real treat. She fixed one bowl just for him,and one for everyone else.LOL

OMG!!  There are no words for that screeching.  It's far worse than any of you let on.  Who is singing the higher part?  Truly horrendous.

It’s Timmy who’s leading the singing, not Phillip.  Jill is singing the soprano (high) part.

ETA:  I don’t who the two soloists are, but they should never, ever be made to do anymore solos.  Jill really is a HORRIBLE person.  She had to know how awful that sounded during practice before she made them sing it in public.

At what point do the adults in that congregation start going to the Pastor and complaining about being preached at by a child? It always seems to be a Rodrigues boy or the Rodrigues husband "guest preaching" and that would really annoy me as a member of that church. Seriously, I'd roll my eyes and go take a bathroom break if that kid (or one like him) had the arrogance to assume he belonged on the pulpit.

But the thing is.....she refuses to acknowledge that they are anything but good. That's why she does the high descants, because she thinks they (and especially her) are so good that they have to show off.

There was actually a weird part of me which enjoyed listening to this. Hear me out...Many years ago (about 45) when I was in high school, an equally quirky-minded friend and I discovered an album in the town library of Victorian Songs, which was a sort of ode to the times by an operatic baritone (Benjamin Luxon) along with a pretty renowned tenor whose name escapes me at the moment, and Andre Previn on the piano. This album was a huge part of my life back then, leading to the only fan letter I'd ever written, which I got a nice, hand-written response to, leading me to be able to find the piano music to the album, which I played and sang for my own enjoyment for years, and to actually meeting Mr Luxon at Tanglewood when he was there doing a concert  of American folk songs with Bill Crofut (another amazing piece of work). Anyway, point being, that these rather potentially unsophisticated harmonies on both ends of that spectrum could be works of the utmost comfort, and I could well understand how they could be perceived as a sort of ultimate spiritual trigger for folks with a more limited musical palate whose only exposure to them was was in the context of whatever their particular family was capable of. There's something about hearing a family singing in harmony, even if it's pretty wonky, that just warms my heart in the context of families just sort of doing that for the pleasure of it, and I'd pretty much kill to have a family who actually had any interest in doing the same thing. No one in my family wants anything to do with it, except for my younger son who is a bit of a karaoke star in his neck of the woods, but won't think of singing with me.

To a point, I'm sure that is true. But it's also true, no matter how  tempting is to deny it, that there is a modicum of talent in Jill's voice outside of that inability to keep it out of the spotlight which heightens all the flaws. And I have no doubt that she really, actually does love the act of singing. I love singing as well, but realize my limitations. And that's where Jill fails, but it doesn't mean that I don't still feel a twinge of identification with her. And, so, just as my kids don't necessarily want to sing with me, it doesn't mean that at least some of them don't love the act of singing enough to engage in it with her. Singers do love to sing together, even if their circumstances mean that it's not going to be show quality...

I can't say this is true for all Chuck E Cheeses, but the one near me gave out four tickets per play for every game no matter how good or bad you played.  So the tokens were basically turned into tickets and you could figure out exactly how much you were overcharged for that clock radio that required 500 tickets and those Dum-dums that required 10.

I just realized that my male cousins have the same clotting issue and unfortunately, only found out about it when one cousin had an aneurysm and his other brother, who didn't get tested, wound up dying at the age of 51 from a cerebral aneurysm.  The Bates girls are playing dangerous games with their health just to reproduce for Jesus.  They really need to stop the baby trains.

Yes,and this is bound to be so boring for them.It doesn't appear there are really any age appropriate programs they would enjoy there.None for teens and young ppl, either.

Some churches really need to up their game on this,if they want to keep families interested in attending.I know there are complaints about some churches being more like a rock concert these days, but they're doing what they can to keep the younger folks interested.Jmo

I feel sorry that Samuel (and Phillip, who got no braces) had to go on camera and "perform" in exchange for a teeth straightening set. He looks so uncomfortable standing in the dining room and showing his teeth on command while Jill drones on and on and on. I realize she is trying to get referrals to help pay for the retainers, but it pisses me off that she bought that stupid clock she couldn't afford and didn't need instead of spending on things to benefit her children.

Jill is always about Jill. The money is for her.

She reminds me of my mom,who hated spending money on me.And there were only 2 of us kids. She would even wince at having to give me lunch money for school.

But I doubt the Rod kids even get lunch? I suspect in a lot of these fundy families, they sleep late, then just have brunch and dinner to save money, cooking time and dishes/plates/cups

The baby trains will never stop until they have to. And even then, they still try.  There seems to be a certain glory in this belief system associated with the idea of martyrdom via childbirth. If they are told that they need to chill out on having more kids for their own health and safety, they would rather die trying to have more than to give it a rest.

Her selfie taking in a Church no less is just so odd. I'd never ever entertain that particular notion. It's so disrespectful and WHY is no one telling her that?? It can't be that they matter to the congregation, they've no money or anything to offer.

Singing in harmony I love too, but this was giving me tinnitus. Since sharing is caring, I did not want you lot to miss out on the lovely harmonies;-)
