3.4 in the demo. On a down night all around.

And it's still outpacing all non-cable & non-sports television shows, by a healthy margin, especially once Live +3 and Live +7 numbers are factored in.

Last night got a 2.5, which means This is Us on NBC beat it this week (2.8) and Big Bang in its 10th season has been beating it pretty much all year. Of course, it will get renewed but it seems to be burning out fast.

Given the usual wonky holiday ratings, the show residing on a struggling network, the ongoing recent scheduling issues, normal network tv erosion patterns and being paired against a buzzy live musical last night; it's still doing remarkably well.

Realistically, it was never going to repeat it's meteoric rise, but no show that has anywhere near similar success ever does. It's still FOX's crown jewel and will remain so for at least 3-4 more seasons.

Also, shows don't compete across networks, but within each network.  So you have to compare Empire's 2.5 to Pitch or Lucifer.

So what? FOX is not going to dump the top-rated drama on broadcast TV. “Empire” is a lock to return next season.

The show’s gravity-defying first season had the effect of setting the bar so high that it would likely never reach it again. What “Empire” has done since then is just act like a normal network drama, falling year to year but staying within a fairly narrow range week to week. That’s what shows do.

Is “Empire” the world-beating network savior it was two years ago? No. But it’s still arguably the most important piece of FOX’s lineup at the moment, and no way the network lets that go.
