S07.E05: Gryzzlbox / S07.E06: Save JJ's

Recommended Posts

Gryzzlbox:

Hey, Craig goes to Dr. Richard Nygard now. So I guess that disproves the longstanding theory that he was a figment of Chris Traeger's imagination?

We have one of the kid's names! "Sonia," I assume named after Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor?

The Gryzzl people revised their data-mining agreement on the day Episode 7 came out KNOWING Ben would be too distracted to notice. Those bastards.

God, I don't know what I love more: The Perdples Court, or that the show kept reminding us that he's not a real judge. I also loved Leslie and Ben's approaches to the court: Leslie appeals to Perd by talking like Perd, while Ben talks like Roscoe to properly present his case.

Do NOT fuck with Ron's son.

Save J.J.'s:

Do NOT fuck with J.J.'s.

Treat Yo Self 2017!! In Beverly Hills! I'm not sure I'd want to eat sushi made from Paul Reiser's salmon, though.

"Josh Groban eating his own sushi?! That's the most baller thing I've ever seen!"

Jonathan Karate leading a band of child ninjas to Feinstein's office just to point out Leslie and Ron's rally? Freaking awesome. But my god, did he turn into the most evil character in the show in a matter of five minutes. So cartoonishly evil that it seems like Johnny Karate would be his perfect nemesis. Which made the TP at the end so satisfying.

Of course a craphole like Beachview Terrace was represented by Councilman Dexhart. Too busy with sex scandals to care about it.

"Was is Putin? Voldemort Putin? Of Russia? I'd love to take that guy down."

"I can't think of anything more noble to go to war over than bacon & eggs." You and me both, Ron.

So they got Gryzzl to clean up Beachview Terrace, donate the Sweetums land to National Parks, and J.J.'s is saved. So...what now? Will we find out where April's life is going to lead (I think she becomes the new Leslie)? Will Tom finally be happy? Will we find out what Leslie and Ben will do with the new land? Will we learn what the other two kid's names are? Only time will tell and I'm freaking excited about it.

I'm still laughing over Jaden Smith's shoes in Hitch 2: Son of a Hitch.

And Perd as a Judge? (Who is not a real judge.) I laughed every single time the text came up on screen.

He and his judge hammer (Gavel) had me almost in tears.

We now know the girl triplet is Sonia (I'm guessing that spelling because of Justice Sotomayor). No names for the boys yet, but given the number of SCOTUS jokes, wouldn't be surprised if one of the boys is Stephen.

I mentioned that earlier. And given Leslie's love for Biden, I'm hoping one of the boys is named Joe.

Hah, I read your post, somehow I missed that part. I'm secretly hoping for a Ben influenced pop culture name like Luke (Skywalker or Jean luc Picard).

I watched both episodes with a huge smile on my face.  I thought these two episodes were fantastic and I wasn't so hot for the first few of Season 7.  (Looked it up):  Amy Poehler directed "Gryzzlbox".  Joe Mande wrote "Save JJ's".  How can anyone not have the hugest grin watching Tom and Donna shop in Beverly Hills? All of my favourite romcoms smashed into my favourite sitcom for a montage with palm trees and the Hollywood sign.

I'm still laughing over Jaden Smith's shoes in Hitch 2: Son of a Hitch.

This was said a little too quickly for me -- so thank you for typing it out.  Genius, genius, genius, genius.

I think the show was practically at its best for these two episodes and I think Jorma and Billy Eichner (no fucking surprise there) have been great additions.

Loved the cameo by Dax Shepard.  He's great at comedy.

I loved when Leslie was doing some big speech about how J.J. built J.J.'s from the ground up and he interrupted and said "That's not true."

Hey, Craig goes to Dr. Richard Nygard now. So I guess that disproves the longstanding theory that he was a figment of Chris Traeger's imagination?

We met another Nygardian back in season 5, episode 18.  She was interviewing for a job in animal control despite an extreme fear of animals because Nygard wanted her to confront her fears.  Chris asked her to sign his cast.

He and his judge hammer (Gavel) had me almost in tears.

His "tap, tap, tap" when he realized it was missing was just the best thing. I laughed for about a minute.

I'm also going to really miss this show. When Leslie and Ron were patting each other awkwardly I got a little sad because they're my two favorite characters on TV right now and they're leaving!

Love, love, love this show. Now  Leslie has her park, she and Ron friends again, we know Ron and Diane are all good, Donna is almost married and Tom is  with a great girl, what will happen next? Getting April settled is about the last big thing. So in character than Ron didn't hate the Grizzl data mining until they went after his son, shooting down the robot was super.  And Ron tearing up the pix of John (middle name redacted) Swanson- gold. This season is really turning out to be a love letter  to longtime fans, and I am enjoying every minute of it.

I think it's being set up that April runs for Dexhart's city council seat. The show made such a big point of showing she moved to his district and reminded the audience that he's terrible.

The upcoming episode titles seem to lend credence to this theory.

Well, that tied everything up in a neat little bow.  It seems like they are racing through the plot this season.  Just like that a huge company decides to renovate an entire decrepit neighborhood and change its entire plans on a new headquarters?

I feel like they wanted to say something about Google and privacy, but that, too, just sort of went nowhere and ended in Perd's court.  Remember when we thought it was Ice Town all over again?  That drama took all of 3 minutes to unravel.

I think the show did make their statement through Ben's speech (although I'd argue that these services should require an opt-in rather than allow an opt-out). They pointed out that the services can be both helpful and creepy, and it should be up to the individual as to whether Grizzgle can mine a user's data.

And it was also a great character moment for Ben. He usually becomes a human train wreck any time he feels the shadow of Ice Town looming overhead. But he overcame it here and was composed and articulate. We've seen how capable he's become, but it was his moment to actually move past it himself.

"Star Wars - is that the one about the little boy who is a wizard?"

Love that each episode brings back something or someone from previous seasons.

They must have blown half the budget of the episode to rent and insure that Rolls Royce.

Facebook and privacy is what jumps out at me.  Facebook is always data mining what you "Like" and then giving you ad suggestions based on that, and everyone complains about the lack of privacy.  There are some things you have to make public if you join Facebook; there's no choice about those things.  And then of course a lot of people feel the 'need' to join Facebook because everyone and every business is on it.

Feinstein has shown to be evil before. In the episode where Ben and Andy were trying to raise funds he made some mention of his love of hunting and how he wanted to hunt the "ultimate target." Tom was fairly certain that Feinstein meant he was going to hunt Tom.

Like others, I certainly hope that Ben got his choice of at least one of the names. There are so many great possibilities.

I missed a couple of lines, like Jaden Smith being in Hitch 2: Son of a Hitch, so thank y'all for pointing it out.

I'm glad we got to see Craig again. I love when he's manic, but he (and Eichner) are also terrific when he's fairly serious.

The Perdples Court was outstanding. Everything that Perd said, as well as the chyrons repeatedly saying he was not a judge (kind of like The Wørd on The Colbert Report) was hilarious. "Tap tap tap."

That Leslie prepares a monthly photo album is so Leslie. Loved Ron sharing his photo. "Here's a picture of my son at a recent moment in his life."

It's kind of strange how many times Ron smiles now. I understand it, but it seemed like before he only smiled like that at Li'l Sebastian or while drunk on snake juice.

I loved listening to the guy from Gryzzl talk.

I was almost as happy as Donna and Tom when Treat Yo Self! happened. But elbow art? Uh, no.

I loved everything about Johnny/Jonathan Karate and his band of ninjas. TP'ing the office was great. Voldemort Putin. Hee.

Or that Lebron left Cleveland and went back to Miami (in under 2 years).

Elbow bedazzling ?   I guess it's the next logical step in the dazzling after Vajazzling. </snark>

Rosco from Gryzzl -- we are going to be throwing a concert with U2 and Beyonce, tickets already on your phone with seating organized by income and sexual history -- but that's the last time we data mine our customers.

The creepy guy that owns the pawn shop in Pawnee living in the floor hole of an abandoned building (which just adds to the creepiness).

Some of the future tech was funny -- Rosco slapping his Gryzzl pad to a mini-skateboard and it switching to skateboard mode. Dennis Feinstein was having virtual sex inside an episode of Magnum, P.I. on Gryzzl's version of an Oculus Rift VR headset.  And he also had Gryzzl Glass headset as well -- "upload it to my Gryzzl Glass left eye, I'm watching porn with my right eye".

Just about everything I had to say has been said, but I will add that there was a scene at JJ's Diner where a picture of IN Gov. Mike Pence was visible behind Leslie for a while. That was just painful for me because that guy is the worst. He doesn't have much of a shot, but he is running for president in 2016, and that would be bad news bears.

It super massively bugged me that it would not have occurred to Gryzzl that they might consider buying up cheap buildings in the decrepit part of town and gentrifying it themselves with the new campus. I mean, I get it put a bow on it and saved the day, but...how would they jump to "buy 90 mil" (later 125 mil) worth of land and build from scratch as the only possible option, especially if they had the army of lawyers and financial advisers they should have. Someone should've suggested that to them eons ago. Oh but then there'd be no plot.

I mean, these two episodes made me laugh, for sure I enjoyed them, but I don't like when plots require not only a major character but basically a whole fictional company to have not considered a very obvious option. Nope. Nothing is real unless Leslie thinks of it first.

theatremouse - I agree with everything you've said. Also I don't ever feel the need to invest in any of the characters' problems anymore because I know everything will come up roses for them anyway. Of course Leslie and Ron will make up, get the land and save JJ's diner. I never doubted any of it. I don't think it helps with two episodes airing every week so plot lines seem super rushed and over with before they've begun.

I found it odd both Parks and Cougar Town had jokes about adults not understanding strange young people lingo last night.

I was strangely proud of April handing out leaflets and drumming up more interest in the internship. And damn it if I didn't finally like Craig last night but everything he said was true - April has definitely been raised and shaped by having Leslie as her boss.

"Star Wars - is that the one about the little boy who is a wizard?"

It took me entirely too long to realize Ron was talking about Harry Potter, and I'm a fan of both!

Poor Ben is always going to be haunted by Ice Town!

Loved that younger version of April. "I wanted to be a scary mermaid who lures sailors to their deaths."

"Victor Garber, James Garner, Jennifer Garner."

I know Craig is annoying to some but I love how they're using him now!

I'm proud to say I can do 20 stomach crunches before complaining that my "tum tum" hurts!

I really would like to watch an entire episode of the Johnny Karate Show, or at least watch a "Very Special Episode" with "Jonathan Karate."

I really don't like how fancy the technology is all presented as being when we're just jumping two-ish years into the future. It seems like too much, and while I find the jokes from Five Minutes into the Future funny (still laughing about the Freeman/Woodley feud), they're not going to keep well... I guess it can just be taken as an alternate universe timeline. Still.

And I think once Leslie was auctioning her BFF Ann off, and this was the guy with the high bid!

I know I'm a bit jealous of Treat Yo'Self Day, Pawnee style. But man, that day must take the whole year to pay off the credit cards!

I think they're basing that plot on Apple's upcoming "spaceship" campus, an very ambitious project, and one that has its share of detractors and naysayers. Converting unused urban spaces is yesterday's fad. Building super-ultra-green and to very precise spec is where it's at (being a bit sarcastic with these last two statements, but the way).

While they may be a bit optimistic on the timelines, the technologies themselves aren't so far-fetched. Amazon Air, their drone delivery service, is in development right now. Glassless 3-D TVs have been demonstrated at CES for the last two or three years, and transparent OLED displays already exist. And of course Google Glass and Oculus Rift VR have been out for a while. The show's taken some liberties for how long it will take them to be widespread, sure, but I consider that totally fair in the name of satire, especially as they're making a point of how enmeshed into people's lives Gryzzl has become.

This is such an underrated show, I hate that it doesn't get more attention

It does such a great job with political satire and offering a fair, unbiased view of the two political extremes of our culture between Leslie and Ron.  At a time when there is such annimosity between red/blue and democrat/republican (yes I know ron is a libertarian, but close enough), its so refreshing to see a show portraying the two sides finding common ground and working together, being friends.  Leslie and Ron have become one of my favorite pairings on TV.  I may even like them better than Liz and Jack on 30 Rock. You can't question either ones integrity or principles even if you disagree with them.  These episodes just reinforce it once again.

This is truly one of the best political shows on TV, though its not recognized as such.

I really hate that they are rushing through this season. I want to be able to savor it and stretch it out.

Completely agree.  They are treating like its a bad series to burn through and get rid off/be done with, which is a shame.

I knew it!  Hitch 2 is going to be a Jaden Smith vehicle!  Will's need to make his kids stars can never be tamed!  Loved all the references in this one, like Bruce and Christina apparently being an item, a restaurant that serves seafood from actual celebrities (where Josh Groban totally orders his own food, because he's a baller!), and LeBron going back to Miami.  Only thing I missed was who was it that Lucy claimed threw shade at Jesse Eisenberg at the BAFTAs?

Loved seeing a few more famailer faces again like Joe, Feinstein, and, of course, Perd.  The Perdples Court was the best.  The disclaimer that kept popping up that he isn't actually a judge just killed me.  And him not knowing what a gavel was.  Oh, Perd.

"Johnathan Karate" and the ninja kids was the best.  Andy/Chris Pratt seemed to be having so much fun in all of those scenes.

Treat Yourself 2017 was fun, even though I figured it was going to end with Donna finally telling Tom to quick messing around, and just tell Lucy how he feels.  But, I do like how supportive their friendship is.  I do think Tom/Lucy be rekindled has been rushed and very obvious, but since I really do like Natalie Morales, I'm fine with it.

So, the Parks thing sure did get wrapped up into a nice bow.  I do agree there was some holes; why didn't Gryzzl look a rundown areas at first, instead of automatically pay $100 mil?; but it was nice seeing almost the entire team together again, and working for the same goal.  I'm glad Ron and Leslie are back to being on friendlier terms.  I guess the rest of this season is going to be about them building the park, unless other hurdles arise.

I still wish they would hurry up on this April stuff, but at least Craig saved it this time around.  Like the lists of things and name he kept saying in order to calm himself down.  Including both Victor Garber and Jennifer Garner!  Must have been a big Alias fan.

This season is only thirteen, right?  Can't believe we are already close to the halfway point.

Yeah, I think the old Ron would've never chuckled to himself for "Les Vegetables" (although that was pretty fantastic).

What was that?

I remember Nicki Minaj throwing shade at Jesse Eisenberg at the BAFTAs or some such; Tom was on the side that it's deserved and Lucy on the side that it wasn't.
