I'm currently watching The Killing, now that it's complete, and starting to realize I have a definite thing for emotionally closed-off female protagonists (you could always recommend me more of them! I probably know them already, but there's always a chance). I'm also starting to suspect that had Emma not given Henry up (and were Once not as idealistic). she'd end up as bad a mother as Linden (read: awful).

It's an OK show, actually, and probably worth watching if you like moderately depressing crime stories with a somewhat unconventional female protagonist and a very well-developed male/female partnership.

Thanks, y'all! I'm trying to keep calm. Easier said than done! The scheduler said they had been scheduling callbacks a week out, so at least I got an appointment for day after tomorrow.

In other news, I gave into societal pressure and got a tumblr account. I haven't done much in the way of formatting it, and I don't know how much I'll use it, but I'm oraclecat on there.

Thank you, I plan to! A previously unemployed friend just got a job offer today, too, after ages of looking, so we're going to really celebrate.

Hooray! I was thinking about you yesterday, so it's good to get good news.

 

Tumblr scares me, but my work is going to require interacting with teenagers starting next year, so I may be forced to take the plunge. I have no idea what I'd do with it. I already have a blog. Words are more my thing. I don't think in pictures and gifs.

On another subject, I booked my flights for my holiday in Ireland! I'll go on the West Coast (so not near Colin!). I'm so excited that I've already made the clothes list and I'm going in November!!!

The Burren isn't in my program. I should go to Galway, Aran islands, Connemara and Donegal.

Should because I'm waiting for answers from tours companies, as I won't rent a car, so I should do plenty of day excursions. It's also a way to be with people, as I travel alone.

I did it a couple of weekends ago, when I was in Bath and I met interesting people :)

I did that sort of thing on my last trip to England. I was visiting friends, but they had to work during the week, so they lent me their London Walks membership card and I just went on a bunch of day excursions. Everything was arranged, but it wasn't like a big tour bus thing and was a small group, so we all got to know each other. I even ran into some of the same people on multiple excursions (I guess we had the same taste), so there were familiar faces.

 

Though there are times when I travel alone that I really like being alone so I can be lost in my own little world while I explore stuff. I still encounter people and can pause for human interaction, but I can still set my own schedule and do what I want to do and take as much or as little time as I need. If I can get there on my own and it's a place I really want to explore, I'll go by myself.

I prefer traveling alone -- except for the cost of not splitting hotel rooms, etc.! I like being able to stay however long or not I want to at a place without worrying about whether my companion is bored or aching to stay longer. I can change my mind about what I want to do on a whim. I backpacked around Europe on my own in college, and I like the independence.

 

I actually went on a bus tour for the first time when I visited Ireland, and I discovered that tour groups are definitely not for me. We kept having to leave some interesting place to keep on schedule when I really wanted to stay longer. It was convenient to have all the logistics taken care of, and I didn't have to drive on the opposite side of the road, but the lack of freedom bothered me a lot.

The London Walks tours are a good compromise in that they give you guides who really know stuff and who are entertaining enough to add value (a lot are actors or writers, including some who've written books on their subjects, while the actors are really entertaining) and sometimes get access to things the public wouldn't normally get into (that's how we got to tour Canterbury Cathedral while the choir was rehearsing and the cathedral was otherwise deserted), but it's not a motorcoach kind of thing. They use public transportation like trains to sites outside the city, so they're pretty much on the same schedule you'd be on by yourself, and it's about exploring that one destination in-depth rather than drive up, say you've seen it, then rush on to the next place. They did have some chartered transportation between the train station and the site waiting for us when it wasn't walkable, which meant I got to see some things I otherwise might not have without having to drive. You also don't have to book in advance. You show up at the designated meeting place at the designated time, look for the person holding a sign, and sign up and pay. I think they have similar operations in other cities.

 

Generally I go it alone, but these are good for either specialized knowledge or specialized access, and I can decide at the last minute if it's something I want to do or if I just want to wander on my own. I hate driving in the best of conditions, even to go to the grocery store in my neighborhood, so unless I do a tour type thing, I'm limited to things I can get to by public transportation or walking (fortunately, my idea of walking distance is pretty extreme as long as the conditions are reasonably good).

It's not an organized coach tour, which I tend to avoid. It's day tours, with small coaches. I tried those two weeks ago and decided that they weren't not bad. I'm going on my own and only making a couple of day excursions in Connemara and Donegal, because I don't want to rent a car, especially in autumn. Even if it would probably be easier to drive on the other side of the road in autumn, when there are less turists, than during the summer!

 

I went just to Egypt with an organized tour and I think I wouldn't have gone without it, too complicated to organize and, actually, too expensive (boat, visits, hotels, etc).

 

I'm a good organizer, so when I go on holiday with someone, I'm the one tgaking care of most of the logistic and deciding the most. Even if, once I/we decided the general direction, I/we go with the mood of the moment, whether to stay in a place one or more nights. It also depends on the time: two weeks in Victoria, Australia, weren't enough to see everything and we had to choose. Same thing in New Zealand, 4 weeks were not enough and we decided to see just the northern part of the Southern Island, stopping where and when we wanted.

My sister came over for lunch yesterday, and I had just gotten up to "New York City Serenade" in my DVD rewatch. When I told her I was at the Chris Gorham episode, we decided to watch it together. She hasn't watched Once since season 1, so I gave her enough background to get her through the episode and then we got to it.

 

She was giggling when Walsh mentioned Henry (because Chris Gorham's characters' names in both Ugly Betty and Harper's Island were Henry) and she giggled even harder when I reminded her that Henry's last name is Mills (because that was Abby's last name in Harper's Island). When she saw how much Henry had grown up, she felt old. ("Oh my God, his voice is even changing! This is not okay!") She mentioned she loves guys with really dark hair and really light eyes (aka Hook). And then when they did the Walsh reveal, she literally gasped.

 

Basically, I spent the entire 42 minutes exceedingly amused. :)

In my defense, it was straight on the map.

 

Back in my PR days I was escorting some clients on a press tour where we'd met with some reporters and industry analysts in Silicon Valley, then moved on to San Francisco. There was some kind of traffic/construction tie-up, and one of the people we met with in San Jose suggested taking a different route to San Francisco that might have less traffic and that would be more scenic. But that also meant that our turn-by-turn instructions to get where we were going no longer worked. I was navigating off the map the rental car company had given us and figured out the most direct route across San Francisco to get there. Unfortunately, the route that looked most direct on the map included Lombard Street, which is apparently the most crooked (and rather steep) street in America. I'd never been there, so I had no idea, and neither had the marketing guy, who was driving. The company president was from India, so he had no idea. The map didn't indicate this. So suddenly, there we were at the top of this steep hill with this very twisty street, in a huge car. We made it, but tourists were taking photos of us the whole way and the marketing guy was white-knuckling the steering wheel. The company president was in the back seat, talking on his cell phone the entire time, and I'm not sure he even knew what was happening. Our rallying cry for the rest of the trip (which also included Denver) became "It was straight on the map!"

 

Anyway, it's a pretty nifty street. If you're not driving. I don't have a lot of other suggestions because we just went from meeting to meeting and didn't get to do anything touristy, though we did walk to most of the meetings and it's an interesting city to wander.

As a huge U2 fan, I've been totally giddy about them pulling a Beyonce and releasing their new album on Apple for FREE! Seriously, even if you're a casual fan or haven't listened to them for awhile, this album is awesome. Although to be a fair, I am a U2 nerd who met her husband at a U2 concert so I may be biased.

I just received a text from my next door neighbor informing me that they've hired a studly billy goat and asking for my prayers that he's successful in knocking up their goats quickly. Sometimes I wonder about my life.

I laughed and laughed at this. My kids think I am weird - nothing new there.....

Question - how is the internet your end of the world? Here in Oz, our internet is always slow so I am not really seeing any real difference between normal speed and the "internet slow" day that I've been reading about......

I'm going to miss Santino Fontana's voice as Hans once the Frozen arc starts. That was the only reason I didn't completely hate the character. If he weren't so wrong for the part physically, I'd have wanted him to be cast for this.

I've been to SF a few times. The trolleys are cliche but they are so much fun to ride and are actually useful for getting around certain parts of the city. I love going to art museums and the Cartoon Art Museum and the Legion of Honor are among my favorites. We took a boat tour of the bay and that was cool because you could see the old base that Mythbusters use.

Holy crap, Crimson! Are you in college or something? ;-) I remember going out of town for work and vacation for a long weekend and drank a beer or two pretty much very night. When I told my sister I didn't feel week, she asked me when the last time was that I drank like that. Oh yea, college. You may have inspired me to buy a bottle of Boone's but now it'll take all weekend for me to finish.

About 20 years removed from college.  We had one of our bigger Mardi Gras society meetings last night, displaying the year's float costumes to the members.  As a board member, I have certain social obligations, so I went to the pre-party and had shots with the costume models (they pretty much need to be drunk to wear the things around 250 other women), had somebody bringing me margaritas while I did my boardly duties at the meeting, and then went out for the post party (more shots).

 

And I was at my desk perky and energetic at 7:30 this morning.

Boy, we need to rethink our convention committee meetings to include shots and margaritas. I might be less hostile with more alcohol. I bring knitting instead. I figure that way I have both distraction and weapons, if necessary. I don't deal well with disorganized people, and I really can't stand people who feel the need to present their entire to-do list to the entire group as a way of making themselves sound busier and more important when most of us don't need to know most of that information. Though I can't be too mellow because the radiating sense of hostility at the general herding cats environment is what keeps me out of being ever named con chair. Or, as I like to remind people, after the first few executions, the people who aren't on board will flee and the rest will be easier to work with.

 

And wouldn't you know, our local con, where I'm both a staff member and a programming participant guest, is next weekend, which will delay my viewing of the season premiere, as we'll be busy with teardown while it's on. Unless maybe I can find a way to suddenly have to take one of the guests of honor to the airport that afternoon, since I live close to the airport and it would be silly for me to head back to the hotel afterward.

We have an open bar at our society meetings.  Our Board meetings is where the real work is done for the most part, and we just report to the Society and promote dances and functions.  The entire parade/ball/event is a year round business/social group, and it takes about $375,000 in revenue to put on a parade and ball and pay for various events and to pay our mortgage.  That's not counting what each individual purchases to throw, though some of the $375k is merchandising and custom throws.

Knitting in meetings? I love it! Seriously, those needles can become quite useful for other things when needed. Although knitting and drinking isn't always the best mix. There have definitely been a few times when I looked at what I had done after two glasses of wine and have no idea what was going on.

It's a really bad idea to mix knitting and drinking when you're knitting lace.

 

But I do find the knitting calming when people are being annoying around me. That's why I love it when they show Granny knitting during their brainstorming sessions on how to beat the latest threat. You just know she's doing that so she won't be tempted to whip out the crossbow and shoot someone for being an idiot.

I wonder what the "Frozen" flavors are -- ice and snow are pretty flavor-less!  But really, the Frozen stuff is ramping up all over the place now for holiday sales.  The kids haven't moved on to something new yet.

 

Anna's chocolate bonbon and Sven's carrot flavors?

 

I expect to see a herd of little Elsas and Annas on Halloween.
