How do they drop so many viewers???

I'm really starting to think Average Joe finds the show as basic as some of us do as well.

I'd like to think the rise in LoT was people tuning in for the Ray centric ep 😍

Hope it was For Ray and not the Forced "Natari" ship which Klemmer acts like is not forced and says Epic romance started by a sexually charged(GAG) tie straightening. Hope Nora kicks some Ass to get her Ray Back

They've lost something like 390,000 viewers since the last episode before the hiatus. The last time I saw a drop that big was in Season 4 after Olicity broke up. Now, I know the CW doesn't care but consistently dropping viewers for 3 weeks straight? That's not a good trend.

Don't the writers get paid regardless?

Good thing Beth locked her deal in before it tanked like the Titanic.

Seems like there is no onus on them to perform as they get paid anyway without needing to deliver so they keep writing trash.

This viewer's answer is eventually, probably.  But I currently have 2 eps sitting on my dvr with no urge to watch them (or really, fastforward through them, because honestly it'll take me about 10 minutes to watch the stuff I care about, if that).

Yes and no.

The writers get paid the base episode fee regardless of how many people watch. In Arrow's case, most of the writers are also co-producers and paid some form of production fee or salary.

However, any later earnings - residuals - are based on post views. For Arrow, this would include any North American syndication for any broadcast episode (in this particular case "broadcast" means both actual broadcast TV that you watch with an antenna and cable); international syndication (typically series bundled on a pro-rata basis), DVD/Blu-ray sales (same), streaming (per episode) and any other post views.

(For instance, if a fan/media convention remembers that they are supposed to get permission from the studio before screening an episode/film at a con and in most cases pay the studio for public broadcast.* In practice I can't think of a single convention that has bothered to do this, but I continue to live in hope.)

So post-view revenue is directly tied to sales/viewers. If viewers don't watch an episode later, the writers won't get that revenue.

*For the full episode/film. Playing clips at a con is perfectly fine and covered under fair use.

The show is rubbish so I can imagine people not bothering to tune in.

I would rather watch Rachel Ray than Dinah and Rene. Felicity clips I see on youtube. I was a HUGE fan of the show.

I can imagine average Joe tuning out and never looking back.

Is there a lone figure for just the +7 bit? I want to know if it's live ratings bringing down the Live + 7 figure or both.

Hehe the most interesting thing about this show now is it's falling ratings!

Not totally sure if this is what you mean, but the gains underneath the bolded number is the difference between the Live+7 and the Live+SD.  If you go back and click on the Monday ratings links, you can see that for each of the weeks.  If you’re interested, I might post a list later today when I get a few minutes.

It wasn't really common belief that Arrow would come back in January, they announced Arrow would return in October on Tuesdays after Flash back at Upfronts. Depending on when the crossover is this year, they might have Arrow have 2 episodes in 2020 since it's airing a week later. Like, if the crossover is in the first week of December that would be 609 of Flash while Arrow is only on 808.

The crossover probably is the first week of December. Airing the last two Arrow episodes in the Spring is a possibility, but I think it would be weird just to come back for two episodes. I think they could also air the last two back to back the second week in December.

I guess it all depends on what happens in the crossover and if/how Oliver fits into an Arrow only wrap up after "dying" in COIE. One might be okay, two is pushing it, unless they are going to be launching a spin off with it.

I can see them writing and marketing it as a two-hour event, or 'movie'. Or maybe the retrospective that was mentioned at the upfronts is part of the ten episodes (so really only nine episodes of story, etc.).

I'm pretty sure it was 10 episodes plus the retrospective since SA mentioned 10 episodes way before that was a thing (and I have a suspicion that he'll be trying to get out of that retrospective since he doesn't like interviews).

Plus they can't air the last 2 episodes in December if there's still the second half of the crossover in January, also confirmed at Upfronts. Unless if Arrow just ends like crossover-809-810 but then SA is still in the 2 crossover episodes in January.

After reading some stuff online in which conclusions were drawn based on apples-and-oranges comparisons, I felt compelled to do this season-by-season ratings comparison (all numbers are from TV Series Finale)...

Season 1:
Arrow S1 ratings averaged 1.05 demo and 3.21M viewers.
The Flash S1 ratings averaged 1.44 demo and 3.84M viewers.
(On CBS) Supergirl's S1 ratings averaged 1.68 demo and 7.684M viewers.
DC's Legends of Tomorrow S1 ratings averaged 0.80 demo and 2.167M viewers.
Black Lightning's S1 ratings averaged 0.56 demo and 1.732M viewers.

Season 2:
Arrow S2 ratings averaged 0.91 demo and 2.62M viewers.
The Flash S2 ratings averaged 1.37 demo and 3.532M viewers.
(Moved to The CW) Supergirl's S2 ratings averaged 0.73 demo and 2.356M viewers.
DC's Legends of Tomorrow S2 ratings averaged 0.64 demo and 1.810M viewers.
Black Lightning's S2 ratings averaged 0.30 demo and 0.963M viewers.

Season 3:
Arrow S3 ratings averaged 1.01 demo and 2.76M viewers.
The Flash S3 ratings averaged 1.06 demo and 2.840M viewers.
Supergirl's S3 ratings averaged 0.51 demo and 1.835M viewers.
DC's Legends of Tomorrow S3 ratings averaged 0.48 demo and 1.505M viewers.

Season 4:
Arrow S4 ratings averaged 0.94 demo and 2.489M viewers.
The Flash S4 ratings averaged 0.80 demo and 2.214M viewers.
Supergirl's S4 ratings averaged 0.35 demo and 1.207M viewers.
DC's Legends of Tomorrow S4 ratings averaged 0.29 demo and 0.948M viewers.

Season 5:
Arrow S5 ratings averaged 0.62 demo and 1.755M viewers.
The Flash S5 ratings averaged 0.61 demo and 1.701M viewers.

Season 6:
Arrow S6 ratings averaged 0.43 demo and 1.267M viewers.

Season 7:
Arrow S7 ratings averaged 0.34 demo and 1.086M viewers.

You can draw your own conclusions.

Very interesting. Season 2 the Flash did better than Arrow (the season often considered the best one).  In season 3 they were roughly equal. But in seasons 4 and 5, Arrow did marginally better than the Flash.

NOT what I had been led to believe. Although since they were in different years, superhero fatigue may be setting in.

If anything those comparisons actually makes Arrow looks worse than The Flash.

TV Ratings have been dropping sharply every year all accross the board since 2016, wether it be the Networks (ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, CW) or the Cable channels.

On top of that, The CW keeps losing affiliates every single year.

Arrow S4 & S5 ran respectively :

 - S4 from October 2015 to May 2016                                                                   - S5 : from October 2016 to May 2017

The Flash S4 & S5 ran respectively:

  - S4 from October 2017 to May 2018                                                                    - S5 : from October 2018 to May 2019

And yet The Flash still manages to get similar ratings to Arrows with a 2 year gap for each season.

Just take all the above factors in consideration and let that sink in.

The Flash is an A-list superhero in the DC pantheon and well known even by the non-comics reading general public. When Arrow premiered, GA was, at best, B-/C+ list. Not to mention that Flash is written to draw in a younger, family-friendly audience and has kept its 8PM Tuesday time spot for its entire run, unlike Arrow, which was moved around 3 times in 2 seasons.  The Flash should be doing better than Arrow.

I simply wanted to point out that Arrow's decline in ratings over seven seasons is not that unusual for an aging show, and that the other Arrowverse shows' ratings are also declining similarly as they age.

Arrow rejoins The Flash for its final season, and it will be interesting to see if the longest-running DC series on The CW gets any kind of bump for its last run. Recent history suggests final-season lifts aren't much of a thing anymore, but the short run leading up to the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover may help it a bit.

Today we’re continuing our series of deep dives on major networks with a look at The CW. We examined recent advertising and viewership trends from the network (Jan. 1 through May 31, bypassing the summer lull) using data from iSpot.tv, the always-on TV ad measurement and attribution company, and Inscape, the TV data company with glass-level insights from a panel of more than 11 million smart TVs. Also below: the new fall series from The CW that are showing lots of viewer interest online according to video measurement company Tubular Labs.

We looked at viewer trends across some of The CW’s major shows using insights from Inscape, including show crossover and season-over-season crossover.

First, a look at the percentage of crossover among five of its series: The Flash, Supernatural, Supergirl, Arrow and Roswell, New Mexico. A note about methodology: You have to do more than just flip past a station with your remote to count as a “crossover viewer” in Inscape’s system. For the data below, the minimum viewing threshold is 10 minutes.

The Flash was on the high end of crossover for multiple other shows: 45% of Supergirl viewers, 44% of Roswell, New Mexico viewers and 42% of Arrow fans tuned into it. On the flip side, people watching Supernatural were less likely in general to watch the other four shows, with the lowest crossover being 8.9% for Supergirl.

Two of the shows, Supernatural and Arrow, will be ending after this season. We took a look at audience loyalty with a season-over-season crossover analysis for each.

For Arrow, 26% of the fans who tuned into season six (Oct. 12, 2017 through May 17, 2018) came back for season seven; 30% of people who watched season seven (Oct. 15, 2018 through May 13, 2019) had also watched season six.
