TV Characters That You Love… That You Would Hate In Real Life

So many of the "strong women" from 90's comedies make for great entertainment and are generally much more interesting than most women on today's sitcoms: Roseanne, Murphy Brown, and the above-mentioned Julia Sugarbaker. But I don't think I could put up with Roseanne's constant sarcasm, Murphy's self-absorption, or Julia's speeches.

I also thought of Edith from All in the Family. Sure, she was sweet as pie, kind as all get out, and often wiser than she was given credit for. But she was notorious for her endless stories. On the episode about her class reunion, when someone asked her what she'd been doing with herself since high school, she practically gave him a day by day rundown of thirty years!

If these characters were real women, and we somehow overcame the geographic differences to have monthly happy hours together, I'd love my life.

Julia and Murphy would be great pals, sure. But I think they would find Roseanne a “deplorable.” The reboot version of her, anyway. I can imagine conversations turning into two-against-one shouting matches.

Everybody except for Robert and Amy (and maybe the kids) from Everybody Loves  Raymond.

Joey, Phoebe, Ross, and Rachel from Friends. Monica would hate me.

Marsha and Greg from The Brady Bunch.

Roz from Frasier.

Ha, for me it'd be Frasier and Niles. Love them on the show, would go to them if I needed help and advice, all that good stuff. There is plenty to like about them.

But boy, if I worked at that cafe, or at a restaurant, or any place where I'd have to put up with their more snooty, picky sides... I very much sympathized with the waitress early on in the series who, in response to Frasier constantly nitpicking his coffee order and wondering why it was taking so long, said, "We've got a team of specialists working on it."

Apparently they're really good tippers, though, so there's that.

I have been rewatching My Name is Earl and while Joy is a terrible person and someone I would hate in real life. She is an awesome character. I love how confident she is and how while she is a total mean asshole person, a lot of her meanness is really funny. Plus the name Joy is perfect and hilarious for that character.

By the end of the series, I couldn't stand Julia on the show so I imagine real life would have gotten me there much faster.
