The Cast In Other Roles: Boo!

One of the best things about AHS is remembering how many other roles and what kind of roles the cast has played. For example, Jessica Lange won two Oscars for her roles in Tootsie and Frances while her "Coven" and "Freak Show" co-stars Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett won for Misery and was nominated for What's Love Got To Do With It, respectively. As for TV roles, Michael Chiklis is best remembered for his roles in The Commish and The Shield. Speaking of TV, "Murder House" stars Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton's TV shows include The Practice, Stalker, Hostages, Spin City, Friday Night Lights and Nashville. BTW, the "Boo!"  is because the show has "Horror" in the title and sometimes that means ghosts and ghosts say "Boo."

 

  Whether they're regulars or guest stars, lead or supporting, here's the place to talk about the AHS cast's other acting roles.

  Finn Wittrock, aka Dandy, was in All My Children and played a male prostitute in Masters Of Sex.

 

 Wes Bentley, aka Edward Mordrake, was in American Beauty and played Seneca Crane in The Hunger Games.

Re-watching Serenity, I have to say I love Sarah Paulson's five minutes or so of screen time. Powerful stuff.

Particularly the end when she is attacked by the reaver and is screaming in anguish. :(

  I adored 12 Years a Slave (like seriously even though it's hard to watch, the acting and just the beauty of the cinematography kind of make me want to watch it all the time.) Honestly, though, Paulson was not my favorite of the cast, but  I did like her take on the jealous and vindictive plantation mistress. 

 

Has anyone seen that film Broken Flowers with Bill Murray? I watched that solely because Jessica Lange and Francis Conroy were listed among the cast. But it was very slow and boring and both actresses were completely underused I felt.   While also a fairly small part, I really liked Francis as the Christmas-obsessed, hoarder grandma on United States of Tara. Admittedly, her freak-outs on Six Feet Under will always be my favorite, though.

Haha. I've never seen that movie, so my experience was completely the opposite, the first JL thing I ever saw was actually the Grey Gardens movie where she played the unkept, elderly mother. She did a really amazing job I thought of capturing the real Edie's mannerisms.

This isn't really an acting gig but Amazon Eve was on an episode of AMC's Freak Show earlier this year.  She was billed as the world's tallest model (not lady) and just seemed so charming and BEAUTIFUL!  It was never mentioned on the show that she was transgender-I didn't find out myself until I saw the youtube video of her & the other "freaks" for FX.

Both Emma Roberts and Evan Peters are in this fun little movie I found recently called Adult World. Awkward wannabe poet girl gets a job at a mom and pop porn store. So far it's pretty good. John Cusack and Cloris Leachman even show up. Fun stuff!

Lillian is played by Celia Weston who appeared as Jolene Hunnicutt in the 70s tv sitcom "Alice". That is how I always remember Celia. When she first appeared on this show, I yelled out "Jolene!"

Evan is Quicksilver in X-Men. I really liked him in the movie. I have seen Adult World as well. It as was funny to se Evan be just a regular normal guy loll.

Taissa Farmiga (Zoe in "Coven" and Violet in "Murder House") was in "The Bling Ring" directed by Sofia Coppola.

Connie Britton stars as a country music singer in "Nashville".

And AHS referenced the end of All That Jazz in Asylum on the shot where the Angel of death comes for Sister Jude, only this time Lange is receiving the kiss, not giving it.

I remember first noticing Jessica Lange in Tootsie, and thinking she was the worst actress ever.  It wasn't until I saw her in other things (King Kong nonwithstanding) that I realized she was fantastic; it was her "Julie" character that was so damn annoying. Feh.

Emma Roberts was also in We're the Millers. Kind of campy, but still entertaining. And for anyone who follows the Vanderpump Rules series, that's the movie Laura Leigh quit SUR to go star in....even though she had like 2 lines and was in it for all of 5 minutes.

Evan also had a small role in the film The Good Doctor. He played Orlando Bloom's stalker victim/love interest's teen brother. Additionally, he was one of Aaron Taylor-Johnson's dorky friends in Kick Ass. 

 

My favorite though is his "iconic" role in the teen movie Sleepover which appears to only be his second film credit ever. I remember watching that movie on TV a few years after its release, and it was totally dreadful even as far as teen fluff goes. That being said,  Evan was  lovably goofy as a rather Sixteen Candles-esque underwear drawer raiding, skateboarder dweeb. Probably wouldn't go so far as recommending the movie (though Sam Huntington is in it), but his big dance scene is at least  worth checking out on youtube, if you're into that sort of thing. :)

 

So I won't be solely picking on Evan's early career, I'll admit I mostly just remember Emma Roberts from that TV show she had on Nick, Unfabulous. Mostly harmless, but I'm still  completely annoyed by Addie's "song writing" attempts. It's unfair, since  Emma  has likely improved, but I it makes me hesitant as hell to see her  get on stage for a number.

   Evan played a trans person in a movie once. He looks really pretty as a girl. That might actually be a cool idea for him to play in the next season.

 

    With him in drag, you can really see his resemblance to Jessica Lange. That was good casting, having him play her son.

 

     As for Jessica Lange, she played this weird incestuous Southern Gothic mother obsessed with stealing her newborn grandson from daughter-in-law Gwyneth Paltrow in Hush.

 

     I thought her character there was probably the most like Constance.

Angela Bassett has starred in some big movies other than the Tina Turner one, including "Waiting to Exhale", "Malcolm X", "Vampire in Brooklyn", and my favorite "How Stella Got Her Groove Back".

One of Kathy Bates's most memorable roles for me was as Adam Sandler's mother who thinks football is evil in "The Waterboy".

Finn Wittrock is in Unbroken, the film about the late Louis Zamporini, former Olympian/WWII veteran and POW camp survivor, which was directed by Angelina Jolie and opens nationwide Christmas day.

Sarah Paulson is about to play Marcia Clark in American Crime Story for FX (and Ryan Murphy).  I'm not sure about the 'Cuba-Gooding-Jr.-as-O.J.-Simpson' casting choice, though.  It should be fun to see Sarah with the different Marcia Clark hairdos -- both short and pert, and curly/sassy!

One of Kathy Bates's most memorable roles for me was as Adam Sandler's mother who thinks football is evil in "The Waterboy".

LOVED her in that movie!  And let's not forget the "boat movie" Titanic.  She is such a talented actress.  I'm glad she's finding nice, meaty roles here on AHS.

He was great in Masters of Sex!  If anyone hasn't seen it, he was in Season 1, for a six (or so) episode arc, as the hustler that Beau Bridges' character has a relationship with.  The boy has the acting chops, for sure!  He also had a small role in The Normal Heart, and was very good.  Sad role, though.

 

He's totally, totally killing it this season as Dandy (no pun intended!

 

I had never seen Six Feet Under, but marathonned the whole series this past Spring.  Now Frances Conroy will always be kooky Ruth Fisher to me!

Angela Bassett is in Chi-Raq, the new Spike Lee movie, based on the classic Greek play Lysistrata, about the women of two rival gangs declaring a sex strike in order to make their men stop the violence in their community. The title is the nickname for Chicago, which has had more murders than Iraq did when it was occupied by the US Special Forces, hence "Chi-Raq."

 

 The movie's tagline: "No Peace, No Piece."

I'm unsure if anyone knows that but Taissa Farmiga, who I absolutely love and adore is in this new horror movie kind of like Friday the 13th, it looks like a blockbuster kind of movie. I'm really ashamed that Taissa hasn't been in every season, she's just so grundgy and i love it!

Wes Bentley was Ricky Fitts in American Beauty. He's grown up nicely. He also played a murderous psycho in the movie P2, as a parking garage security officer who kidnaps a Jodie Foster look-alike during the Holiday season.

Don't know if this counts as 'another role' or not, but...

Lady Gaga co-wrote and sang a song ("Till it Happens To You") on the soundtrack of the documentary, "The Hunting Ground", about sexual assault on college campuses and the ways in which schools cover this up. The song, as well as the film, got good reviews and Gaga and her co-writer, Diane Warren, may receive an Oscar nomination!

Connie Britton is starring in the new Bravo series Dirty John. Juno Temple and Julia Garner play her daughters, and Eric Bana plays the title character. It's based on a podcast which is based on a true story. Only two episodes have aired so far so you have time to catch up easily.
